In the following cases, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible: (cid:1) The SRS front airbags have been in-

flated.

(cid:1) The front of the vehicle (shaded in the illustration) was involved in an accident that was not severe enough to cause the SRS front airbags to inflate.

(cid:1) The pad section of the steering wheel, lower portion of driver’s side instrument panel or front passenger airbag cover (shaded in the illustration) is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.

—SRS side airbags and curtain shield airbags

The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys- tem) side airbags and curtain shield air- bags are designed to provide further protection for the driver, front passen- ger and rear outboard passengers in addition to the primary safety protec- tion provided by the seat belts.

the seat belts

In response to a severe side impact, the SRS side airbags and curtain shield air- bags work with to help reduce injury by inflating. The SRS side airbags help reduce injuries mainly to the driver’s or front passenger’s chest and the SRS curtain shield airbags help reduce injuries mainly to the driver’s, front pas- senger’s or rear outboard passenger’s head. The SRS side airbag on the passenger seat will not activate if there is no pas- senger sitting in the front passenger seat. However, the side airbag on the passen- ger seat may deploy if luggage is put in the seat, or the seat belt is buckled up, regardless of the presence of an occupant in the seat. (As for the front passenger occupant see “—Front passenger occupant classification system” on page 94 in this Section.) The SRS curtain shield airbags may acti- vate even when the side airbags are not activated. Always wear your seat belt properly.

CAUTION

(cid:1) The SRS side airbag and curtain shield airbag system is designed only as a supplement to the prima- ry protection of the driver, front passenger and rear outboard pas- senger seat belt systems. To ensure maximum protection in an accident, the driver and all passengers in the vehicle must wear their seat belts properly. Wearing a seat belt prop- erly during an accident reduces the chances of death or serious injury or being thrown out of the vehicle. instructions and precautions For concerning the seat belt system, see “Seat belts” on page 68 in this Section.

To ensure the system correctly detects an adult sitting in the front passenger seat, make sure the above do not occur. Make sure that the “AIRBAG ON” indicator light is seated in the front passenger seat. If the “AIRBAG OFF” indicator light is illumina- ted, ask the passenger to sit up straight, well back in the seat, and with the seat belt worn correctly. If the “AIRBAG OFF” indicator light still remains illuminated, ei- ther ask the passenger to move to the rear seat, or if that is not possible, move the front passenger seat fully rearward. The “AIRBAG ON” and “AIRBAG OFF” indicator lights will be illuminated ini- tially when the ignition switch is set at ON. After about 4 seconds, they will go off. After that, the front passenger oc- cupant classification system operates and judges which indicator light be illu- minated.

The “AIRBAG ON” and “AIRBAG OFF” indicator lights indicate the actuation of the front passenger airbag, side airbag on the front passenger seat and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioner. The “AIRBAG OFF” indicator light will be illuminated when the ignition switch is set at ON with the condition 2 in the table shown below. If the front passenger occupant classifica- tion system determines that a person of adult size sits in the front passenger seat but the “AIRBAG OFF” indicator light is illuminated, one of the following is likely to have occurred:

Re- fer to all the cautions in “SRS airbags” on page 79 and “Child restraint” described below.

restraint

system

child

Child restraint— —Child restraint precautions Toyota strongly urges the use of ap- propriate child restraint systems for children. The laws of all 50 states in the U.S.A. and Canada now require the use of a child restraint system. Your vehicle conforms to SAEJ1819. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. See “Seat belts” on page 68 in this Section for details.

CAUTION

(cid:1) For effective protection in automo- bile accidents and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrained, using a seat belt or child restraint system depending on the age and size of the child. Holding a child in your arms is not a substitute for a child restraint system. In an acci- dent, the child can be crushed against the windshield, or between you and the vehicle’s interior.

(cid:1) Do not put weight on the front pas- senger seat by putting your hands or feet on the front passenger seat seatback from the rear passenger seat.

(cid:1) Do not let a rear passenger lift the front passenger seat with their feet or press on the seatback with their legs.

(cid:1) Do not put objects under the front

passenger seat.

(cid:1) Child restraint systems installed on the rear seat should not contact the front seatbacks.

(cid:1) When it is unavoidable to install the forward−facing child restraint sys- tem on the front passenger seat, install the child restraint system on the the proper order. (As for the installation order, see “—Child restraint sys- tem” on page 100 in this Section.)

(cid:1) Toyota strongly urges use of a proper child restraint system which conforms to the size of the child, installed on the rear seat. Accord- ing to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. (cid:1) Never install a rear−facing child re- straint system on the front passen- ger seat even if the “AIRBAG OFF” indicator light is illuminated. In the event of an accident, the force of the rapid inflation of the front pas- senger airbag can cause death or serious if the rear−facing child restraint system is installed on front passenger seat.

(cid:1) Make sure you have complied with all installation instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer and that the system is properly se- cured. If it is not secured properly, it may cause death or serious injury to the child in the event of a sud- den stop or accident.

99

—Child restraint system A child restraint system for a small child or baby must itself be properly restrained on the seat with the lap por- tion of the lap/shoulder belt. You must carefully consult the manufacturer’s instructions which accompany the child restraint system. To provide proper restraint, use a child restraint system following the manufactur- er’s instructions about the appropriate age and size of the child for the child restraint system. Install the child restraint system correctly following the instructions provided by its manufacturer. General directions are also provided under the following instructions. The child restraint system should be installed on the rear seat. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. When not using the child restraint system, keep it secured with the seat belt or place it in the trunk or somewhere other than the passenger compartment. This will pre- vent the event of a sudden stop or accident.
