STARTING THE ENGINE

WARNING - Proper

footwear

Always wear appropriate shoes when operating your vehicle. Unsuitable shoes (high heels, ski boots, sandals, etc.) may inter- fere with your ability to use the brake and accelerator pedals.

Starting the engine with an ignition key (if equipped) 1.Make sure the parking brake is

applied.

2.Manual Transaxle - Depress the clutch pedal fully and shift the transaxle into Neutral. Keep the clutch pedal and brake pedal depressed while turning the igni- tion switch to the start position. Automatic Transaxle - Place the transaxle shift lever in P (Park). Depress the brake pedal fully. You can also start the engine when the shift lever is in the N (Neutral) position.

3.Turn the ignition switch to START and hold it there until the engine starts (a maximum of 10 seconds), then release the key.

It should be started without depressing the accelerator. 4.Do not wait for the engine to warm up while the vehicle remains sta- tionary. Start driving at moderate engine speeds. (Steep accelerating and decelerating should be avoided.)

Driving your vehicle

If the engine stalls while the vehicle is in motion, do not attempt to move the shift lever to the P (Park) posi- tion. If traffic and road conditions per- mit, you may put the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position while the vehicle is still moving and turn the ignition switch to the START position in an attempt to restart the engine.

CAUTION - Starter

Do not engage the starter for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or fails to start, wait 5 to 10 seconds before re- engaging the starter. Improper use of the starter may damage it.

4.Press the ENGINE START/STOP button while depressing the brake pedal.

5.In extremely cold weather (below 0°F / -18°C) or after the vehicle has not been operated for several days, let the engine warm up without depressing the accelerator.

12

WARNING - Unintended vehicle movement

Never leave the smart key in the vehicle with children or vehicle occupants who are unfamiliar with the vehicle operation. Pushing the ENGINE START/ STOP button while the smart key is in the vehicle may result in unintended engine activation and/or unintended vehicle movement.

Whether the engine is cold or warm, it should be started without depress- ing the accelerator. (cid:129) Even if the smart key is in the vehi- cle, but is far away from you, the engine may not start.

MANUAL TRANSAXLE (IF EQUIPPED)

CAUTION - Downshifting

Do not downshift more than 2
gears or downshift the gear when the engine is running at high speed (5,000 RPM or high- er). Such a downshifting may damage the engine, clutch and the transaxle.

Manual transaxle operation The manual transaxle has 6 forward gears. This shift pattern is imprinted on the shift knob. The transaxle is fully syn- chronized in all forward gears so shifting to either a higher or a lower gear is easily accomplished. Depress the clutch pedal down fully while shifting, then release it slowly. If your vehicle is equipped with an ignition lock switch, the engine will not start when starting the engine without depressing the clutch pedal. The shift lever must be returned to the neutral position before shifting into R (Reverse). The button (1) located below the shift knob must be pulled upward while moving the shift lever to the R (Reverse) position. Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped before shifting into R (Reverse). Never operate the engine with the tachometer (rpm) in the red zone.

The shift lever can be moved without- pressing the button.

The button (1) should be pressed when moving the shift lever into reverse.

OYDDDR2101

14

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:15 PM Page 15

(cid:129) During cold weather, shifting may be difficult until the transaxle lubri- cant is warmed up. This is normal and not harmful to the transaxle. (cid:129) If you've come to a complete stop and it's hard to shift into 1st or R (Reverse), leave the shift lever at neutral position and release the clutch. Depress the clutch pedal and then shift into 1st or R (Reverse) gear position.

CAUTION - Premature

wear

Do not use the shift lever as a handrest during driving,as this can result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.

WARNING - Automatic transaxle

Before leaving the driver's seat, always make sure the shift lever is in the P (Park) position; then set the parking brake fully and shut the engine off. Do not use the P position in place of the parking brake. Always make sure the shift lever is latched in the P position and set the parking brake fully. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement can occur if these precautions are not followed.

Driving your vehicle

Using the clutch The clutch should be depressed all the way to the floor before shifting, then released slowly. The clutch pedal should always be fully released while driving. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving. This can cause unnecessary wear. Do not partially engage the clutch to hold the vehicle on an incline. This causes unnecessary wear. Use the foot brake or parking brake to hold the vehicle on an incline. Do not operate the clutch pedal rapidly and repeatedly.

Downshifting When you must slow down in heavy traffic or while driving up steep hills, downshift before the engine starts to labor. Downshifting reduces the chance of stalling and gives better acceleration when you need to increase your speed again. When the vehicle is traveling down steep hills, downshifting helps maintain safe speed and prolongs brake life.

5 15

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:15 PM Page 16

Driving your vehicle

Good driving practices (cid:129) Never take the vehicle out of gear and coast down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the vehicle in gear.

(cid:129) Don't "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal- function. Instead, when you are driving down a long hill, shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow down the vehicle.

(cid:129) Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-revving the engine, which can cause damage.

(cid:129) Slow down when you encounter cross winds. This gives you much better control of your vehicle.

(cid:129) Be sure the vehicle is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into R (Reverse). The transaxle can be damaged if you do not.

(cid:129) Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating or shifting gears. On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in vehicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the vehicle to go out of control.

(cid:129) Always buckle-up! In a collision, an unbelted occupant is significantly more likely to be seriously injured or killed than a properly belted occupant.

(cid:129) Never exceed posted speed limits.

WARNING - Vehicle handling

Avoid high speeds when cor- nering or turning. High speed cornering and turning increas- es the risk of vehicle rollover due to loss of vehicle control. Rollover accidents are extreme- ly violent and unpredictable.

WARNING - Automatic Transaxle

Before leaving the driver's seat, always make sure the shift lever is engaged in P (Park), set the parking brake fully and shut the engine off. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement may occur if these precautions are not followed.

CAUTION - Transaxle

To avoid damage to your transaxle,do not accelerate the engine in R (Reverse) or any for- ward gear position with the brakes on.The transaxle may be damaged if you shift into P (Park) while the vehicle is in motion.

When stopped on an upgrade, do not hold the vehicle with engine power. Use the service brake or the parking brake.

Transaxle ranges The indicator light in the instrument cluster displays the shift lever posi- tion when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

P (Park) Always come to a complete stop before shifting into P (Park). This position locks the transaxle and pre- vents the front wheels from rotating.

Shifting into P (Park) while the vehi- cle is in motion will cause the drive wheels to lock which will cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:15 PM Page 19

R (Reverse) Use this position to drive the vehicle backward.

CAUTION - Shifting

Always come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse);you may damage the transaxle if you shift into R (Reverse) while the vehicle is in motion, except when “Rocking the Vehicle” explained in this section.

D (Drive) This is the normal forward driving position. The transaxle will automati- cally shift through a 6-gear sequence, providing the best fuel economy and power.

For extra power when passing anoth- er vehicle or climbing grades, depress the accelerator fully, at which time the transaxle will auto- matically downshift to the next lower gear.

N (Neutral) The wheels and transaxle are not engaged. The vehicle will roll freely even on the slightest incline unless the parking brake or service brakes are applied.

If you pull the [+] and [-] paddle shifters at the same time, you can't shift the gear.

Shift lock system (if equipped) For your safety, the automatic transaxle has a shift lock system which prevents shifting the transaxle out of P (Park) unless the brake pedal is depressed. To shift the transaxle from P (Park) into R (Reverse): 1.Depress and hold the brake pedal. 2.Start the engine or turn the ignition

switch to the ON position.

3.Move the shift lever. If the brake pedal is repeatedly depressed and released with the shift lever in the P (Park) position, a chattering noise near the shift lever may be heard. This is a normal con- dition.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death: (cid:129) ALWAYS check the surround- ing areas near your vehicle for people, especially children, before shifting a vehicle into D (Drive) or R (Reverse).

(cid:129) Before leaving the driver’s seat, always make sure the shift lever is in the P (Park) position, then set the parking brake, and place the ignition switch in the LOCK/OFF posi- tion. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement can occur if these precautions are not followed.

(cid:129) Do not use engine braking (shifting from a high gear to lower gear) rapidly on slip- pery roads. The vehicle may slip causing an accident.

24

(cid:129) The Dual Clutch Transmission gives the driving feel of a manual transmission, yet provides the ease of a fully automatic transmis- sion. Unlike a traditional automatic transmission, the gear shifting can be felt (and heard) on the dual clutch transmission - Think of it as an automatically

shifting manual transmission.

- Shift into Drive range and get fully automatic shifting, similar to a con- ventional automatic transmission. (cid:129) Dual clutch transmission adopts dry-type dual clutch, which is dif- ferent from the torque converter of an automatic transmission, and shows better acceleration perform- ance during driving. But, initial launch from a stop might be little bit slower than with an Automatic Transmission.

(cid:129) The dry-type clutch transfers torque and provides a direct driving feeling which may feel different from a con- ventional automatic transmission with a torque converter. This may be more noticeable when starting from a stop or low vehicle speed.

(cid:129) When rapidly accelerating at low vehicle speed, engine could rev at higher rpm than with a comparable Automatic Transmission.

(cid:129) For smooth launch uphill, press down the accelerator pedal smoothly depending on the current conditions.

(cid:129) If you release your foot from the accelerator pedal at a low vehicle speed, you may feel strong engine brake, which is similar to a manual transmission.

(cid:129) When driving downhill, you may use Sports Mode and press the paddle shifters to downshift to a lower gear in order to control your speed without using the brake pedal excessively.

(cid:129) When you turn the engine on and off, you may hear clicking sounds as the system goes through a self test. This is a normal sound for the Dual Clutch Transmission.

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:16 PM Page 25

(cid:129) To hold the vehicle on a hill use the foot brake or the parking brake. If the vehicle is held by applying the accelerator pedal on a hill the clutch and transmission will be overheated resulting in damage. At this time, a warning message (“Steep grade! Press brake pedal”) will appear on the LCD display and you may feel a vibration.

(cid:129) If the clutch becomes overheated by excessive use of the clutch to hold on a hill, you may notice a shuddering feeling and a blinking display on the instrument cluster. When this occurs, the clutch is dis- abled until the clutch cools to nor- mal temperatures. If this occurs, pull over to a safe location, shift into P (Park) and apply the foot brake with the engine for a certain time until the warning on the LCD screen disappears.

(cid:129) If the LCD warning is active, the

foot brake must be applied.

(cid:129) Ignoring the warnings can lead to

damage to the transmission.

(cid:129) If the display continues to blink, for your safety, we recommend that you contact an authorized Kia dealer.

(cid:129) Under certain conditions such as repeated launch on steep grades, the clutch in the transmission could overheat. When the clutch is overheated, the safe protection mode engages. If the safe protection mode engages, the gear position indicator on the cluster blinks with a chime sound. At this time, a warning message (“Trans Hot! Park with engine on”), (“Trans Cooling. Remain parked for 00 min.”), (“Trans cooled. Resume driving”) will appear on the LCD display and driving may not be smooth. If you ignore this warning, the driv- ing condition may become worse. To return the normal driving condi- tion, stop the vehicle and apply the foot brake for a few minutes before driving off.

Driving your vehicle

(cid:129) Gear shifts may be more notice- able than a conventional automatic transmission. This is a normal characteristic of this type of dual clutch transmission.

(cid:129) An overheated Dual clutch trans- mission may change the gear shift- ing characteristics, and will illumi- nate a warning message on the LCD display if the kickdown mech- anism is excessively used.

(cid:129) Do not use the kickdown mecha- nism to return to normal driving. Also, temporarily stop the vehicle at a safe location, when the warn- ing message illuminates on the LCD display. the

first 1,000miles (1,500km), you may feel that the vehicle may not be smooth when accelerating at low speed. During this break-in period, the shift quali- ty and performance of your new vehicle is continuously optimized.

R (Reverse) Use this position to drive the vehicle backward.

CAUTION

Always come to a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse);you may damage the transmission if you shift into R (Reverse) while the vehicle is in motion.

N (Neutral) The wheels and transmission are not engaged. Use N (Neutral) if you need to restart a stalled engine, or if it is necessary to stop with the engine ON. Shift into P (Park) if you need to leave your vehicle for any reason. Always depress the brake pedal when you are shifting from N (Neutral) to another gear.

WARNING

Do not shift into gear unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal. Shifting into gear when the engine is running at high speed can cause the vehicle to move very rapidly. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit people or objects.

Shift lock system For your safety, the Dual clutch trans- mission has a shift lock system which prevents shifting the transaxle from P (Park) into R (Reverse) unless the brake pedal is depressed. To shift the transaxle from P (Park) into R (Reverse): 1. Depress and hold the brake pedal. 2. Start the engine or turn the ignition

switch to the ON position.

3. Move the shift lever. If the brake pedal is repeatedly depressed and released with the shift lever in the P (Park) position, a chat- tering noise & vibration near the shift lever may be heard. This is a normal condition.

WARNING

Always fully depress the brake pedal before and while shifting out of the P (Park) position into another position to avoid inad- vertent movement of the vehicle which could injure persons in or around the car.

30

1. Place the ignition switch in the

LOCK/OFF position.

2. Apply the parking brake. 3. Carefully remove the cap (1) cov- ering the shift-lock release access hole.

4. Insert a tool (e.g. flathead screw- driver) into the access hole and press down on the tool.

5. Move the shift lever. 6. Remove the tool from the shiftlock override access hole then install the cap.

7. We recommend that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Ignition key interlock system (if equipped) The ignition key cannot be removed unless the shift lever is in the P (Park) position.

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:16 PM Page 31

Good driving practices (cid:129) Never move the shift lever from P (Park) or N (Neutral) to any other position with the accelerator pedal depressed.

(cid:129) Never move the shift lever into P (Park) when the vehicle is in motion. (cid:129) Be sure the car is completely stopped before you attempt to shift into R (Reverse) or D (Drive).

(cid:129) Never take the car out of gear and coast down a hill. This may be extremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear when moving.

(cid:129) Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and mal- function. Instead, when you are driving down a long hill, slow down and shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car.

(cid:129) Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. Otherwise, the lower gear may not be engaged.

(cid:129) Always use the parking brake. Do not depend on placing the transaxle in P (Park) to keep the car from moving.

(cid:129) Exercise extreme caution when driving on a slippery surface. Be especially careful when braking, accelerating or shifting gears. On a slippery surface, an abrupt change in vehicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the vehicle to go out of control.

(cid:129) Optimum vehicle performance and economy is obtained by smoothly depressing and the accelerator pedal.

Driving your vehicle

BRAKE SYSTEM Power brakes Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes that adjust automatically through normal usage. In the event that the power-assisted brakes lose power because of a stalled engine or some other reason, you can still stop your vehicle by applying greater force to the brake pedal than you normally would. The stopping distance, however, will be longer. When the engine is not running, the reserve brake power is partially depleted each time the brake pedal is applied. Do not pump the brake pedal when the power assist has been interrupted. Pump the brake pedal only when necessary to maintain steering con- trol on slippery surfaces.

32

CAUTION - Brake pedal

Do not drive with your foot rest- ing on the brake pedal. This will create abnormally high brake temperatures which can cause excessive brake lining and pad wear.

WARNING - Steep hill

braking

Avoid continuous application of the brakes when descending a long or steep hill by shifting to a lower gear. Continuous brake application will cause the brakes to overheat and could result in a temporary loss of braking performance.

Wet brakes may impair the vehicle’s ability to safely slow down; the vehi- cle may also pull to one side when the brakes are applied. Applying the brakes lightly will indicate whether they have been affected in this way.

To dry the brakes, apply them lightly while maintaining a safe forward speed until brake performance returns to normal.

In the event of brake failure If service brakes fail to operate while the vehicle is in motion, you can make an emergency stop with the parking brake. The stopping dis- tance, however, will be much greater than normal.

WARNING - Parking brake Avoid applying the parking brake to stop the vehicle while it is moving except in an emer- gency situation. Applying the parking brake while the vehicle is moving at normal speeds can cause a sudden loss of control of the vehicle. If you must use the parking brake to stop the vehicle, use great caution in applying the brake.

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:16 PM Page 33

Disc brakes wear indicator When your brake pads are worn and new pads are required, you will hear a high-pitched warning sound from your front brakes or rear brakes (if equipped). You may hear this sound come and go or it may occur when- ever you depress the brake pedal. Please remember that some driving conditions or climates may cause a brake squeal when you first apply (or lightly apply) the brakes. This is nor- mal and does not indicate a problem with your brakes.

CAUTION - Replace brake

pads

Do not continue to drive with worn brake pads.Continuing to drive with worn brake pads can damage the braking system and result in costly brake repairs.

Always replace the front or rear brake pads as pairs.

use

(cid:129) Never allow a passenger to touch the parking brake. If the parking brake is released unintentionally, serious injury may occur.

(cid:129) All vehicles should always have the parking brake fully engaged when parking to avoid inadvertent movement of the vehicle which can injure occupants or pedestrians.

34

If at all possible, stop driving the vehicle immediately. If that is not pos- sible, use extreme caution while operating the vehicle and only con- tinue to drive the vehicle until you can reach a safe location or repair shop.

Check the brake warning light by turning the ignition switch ON (do not start the engine). This light will illumi- nate when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switch in the START or ON position. Before driving, be sure the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off. If the brake warning light remains on after the parking brake is released while the engine is running, there may be a malfunction in the brake system. Immediate attention is nec- essary.

Driving your vehicle

Anti-lock brake system (ABS) ABS (or ESC) will not prevent acci- dents due to improper or dangerous driving maneuvers. Even though vehicle control is improved during emergency braking, always maintain a safe distance between you and objects ahead. Vehicle speeds should always be reduced during extreme road conditions. The vehicle should be driven at reduced speeds in the following cir- cumstances: (cid:129) When driving on rough, gravel or

snow-covered roads

(cid:129) When driving with tire chains

installed

(cid:129) When driving on roads where the road surface is pitted or has differ- ent surface heights.

Driving in these conditions increases the stopping distance for your vehi- cle.

5 35

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:16 PM Page 36

Driving your vehicle

lock

The ABS continuously senses the speed of the wheels. If the wheels are going to lock, the ABS system repeatedly modulates the hydraulic brake pressure to the wheels. When you apply your brakes under conditions which may the wheels, you may hear a “tik-tik’’ sound from the brakes, or feel a cor- responding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and it means your ABS is active. In order to obtain the maximum ben- efit from your ABS in an emergency situation, do not attempt to modulate your brake pressure and do not try to pump your brakes. Press your brake pedal as hard as possible or as hard as the situation allows the ABS to control the force being delivered to the brakes.

✽✽ NOTICE A click sound may be heard in the engine compartment when the vehi- cle begins to move after the engine is started. These conditions are normal and indicate that the anti-lock brake system is functioning properly.

(cid:129) Even with the anti-lock brake sys- tem, your vehicle still requires suf- ficient stopping distance. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

(cid:129) Always slow down when cornering. The anti-lock brake system cannot prevent accidents resulting from excessive speeds.

(cid:129) On loose or uneven road surfaces, operation of the anti-lock brake system may result in a longer stop- ping distance than for vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system.

36

W-78
The ABS warning light will stay on for approximately 3 seconds after the ignition switch is ON. During that time, the ABS will go through self- diagnosis and the light will go off if everything is normal. If the light stays on, you may have a problem with your ABS but your regular brakes will work normally. Contact an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

YDM USA 5.QXP 5/1/2016 1:16 PM Page 37

(cid:129) When you drive on a road with poor traction, such as an icy road, and operated your brakes continu- ously, the ABS will be active con- tinuously and the ABS warning light may illuminate. Pull your vehi- cle over to a safe place and stop the engine.

(cid:129) Restart the engine.

If the ABS warning light is off, then your ABS is normal. Otherwise, you may have a problem with the ABS. Contact an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

✽✽ NOTICE When you jump start your vehicle because of a drained battery, the engine may not run as smoothly and the ABS warning light may turn on at the same time. This happens because of the low battery voltage. It does not mean your ABS has mal- functioned. • Do not pump your brakes! • Have the battery recharged before

driving the vehicle.

Electronic stability control (ESC)

OYDDDR2107
The Electronic Stability control (ESC) system is designed to stabi- lize the vehicle during cornering maneuvers. ESC checks where you are steering and where the vehicle is actually going. ESC applies the brakes on individual wheels and intervenes with the engine manage- ment system to stabilize the vehicle.

Driving your vehicle

Electronic stability control (ESC) will not prevent accidents. Excessive speed in turns, abrupt maneuvers and hydroplaning on wet surfaces can still result in serious accidents. Only a safe and attentive driver can prevent accidents by avoiding maneuvers that cause the vehicle to lose traction. Even with ESC installed, always follow all the normal precautions for driving - including driving at safe speeds for the condi- tions. The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is an electronic sys- tem designed to help the driver main- tain vehicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors includ- ing speed, road conditions and driv- er steering input can all affect whether ESC will be effective in pre- venting a loss of control. It is still your responsibility to drive and corner at reasonable speeds and to leave a sufficient margin of safety.

Hill-start assist control (HAC) Hill start Assist Control is a comfort function. The main intent is to pre- vent the vehicle from rolling back- wards while driving uphill on an inclined surface. HAC holds the brak- ing pressure builtup by driver during stopping procedure for 2 seconds after releasing brake pedal. During the pressure-hold period, the driver has enough time to press the accelerator pedal to drive off. The braking pressure is reduced as soon as the system detects the dri- ver’s intention to drive off.
