(cid:129) Do not take this vehicle through an automatic car wash while the com- pact spare tire is installed.

(cid:129) Do not use tire chains on the com- pact spare tire. Because of the smaller size, a tire chain will not fit properly. This could damage the vehicle and result in loss of the chain.

(cid:129) The compact spare tire should not be installed on the front axle if the vehicle must be driven in snow or on ice.

(cid:129) Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle because this tire has been designed especially for your vehicle.

(cid:129) The compact spare tire’s tread life is shorter than a regular tire. Inspect your compact spare tire regularly and replace worn com- pact spare tires with the same size and design, mounted on the same wheel.

(cid:129) The compact spare tire should not be used on any other wheels, nor should standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the compact spare wheel. If such use is attempted, damage to these items or other car compo- nents may occur.

(cid:129) Do not use more than one compact

spare tire at a time.

(cid:129) Do not tow a trailer while the com-

pact spare tire is installed.

TOWING Towing service

dolly

OMC045012

If emergency towing is necessary, we recommend having it done by an authorized Kia dealer or a commer- cial tow-truck service. Proper lifting and towing procedures are neces- sary to prevent damage to the vehi- cle. The use of wheel dollies or flatbed is recommended.

It is acceptable to tow the vehicle with the rear wheels on the ground (without dollies) and the front wheels off the ground. If any of the loaded wheels or sus- pension components are damaged or the vehicle is being towed with the front wheels on the ground, use a towing dolly under the front wheels. When being towed by a commercial tow truck and wheel dollies are not used, the front of the vehicle should always be lifted, not the rear.

WARNING - Side and curtain air bag

If your vehicle is equipped with side and curtain air bag, set the ignition switch to LOCK or ACC position when the vehicle is being towed. The side and cur- tain air bag may deploy when the ignition is ON, and the rollover sensor detects the situ- ation as a rollover.

What to do in an emergency

When towing your vehicle in an emergency without wheel dollies : 1.Set the ignition switch in the ACC

position.

2.Place the transaxle shift lever in N

(Neutral).

3.Release the parking brake.

CAUTION - Towing gear

position

Always place the transaxle shift lever in N (Neutral) when towing your vehicle.Failure to place the transaxle shift lever in N (Neutral) may cause internal damage to the transaxle.

(cid:129) Attach a towing strap to the towing

hook.

(cid:129) Using a portion of the vehicle other than the tow hooks for towing may damage the body of your vehicle. (cid:129) Use only a cable or chain specifi- cally intended for use in towing vehicles. Securely fasten the cable or chain to the towing hook provid- ed.

(cid:129) Before emergency towing, check that the hook is not broken or dam- aged.

(cid:129) Fasten the towing cable or chain

securely to the hook.

(cid:129) Do not jerk the hook. Apply it

steadily with even force.

(cid:129) To avoid damaging the hook, do not pull from the side or at a verti- cal angle. Always pull straight ahead.

If towing is necessary, we recom- mend you have it done by an authorized Kia dealer or a com- mercial tow truck service. If towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporarily towed using a cable or chain secured to the emergency tow- ing hook under the front (or rear) of the vehicle. Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle. A driver must be in the vehicle to steer it and operate the brakes. Towing in this manner may be done only on hard-surfaced roads for a short distance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, power train, steering and brakes must all be in good condition. (cid:129) Do not use the towing hooks to pull a vehicle out of mud, sand or other conditions from which the vehicle cannot be driven out under its own power.

(cid:129) Avoid towing a vehicle heavier than

the vehicle doing the towing.

(cid:129) The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other fre- quently.

What to do in an emergency

Emergency towing precautions (cid:129) Turn the ignition switch to ACC so

the steering wheel isn’t locked.

(cid:129) Place the transaxle shift lever in N

(Neutral).

(cid:129) Release the parking brake. (cid:129) Press the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will have reduced brake performance. (cid:129) More steering effort will be required because the power steer- ing system will be disabled.

(cid:129) If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake performance will be reduced. Stop often and let the brakes cool off.

30

If the car is being towed with all four wheels on the ground, it can be towed only from the front. Be sure that the transmission is in neutral. Be sure the steering is unlocked by plac- ing the ignition switch in the ACC position. A driver must be in the towed vehicle to operate the steering and brakes.

CAUTION - Automatic transaxle/ Dual Clutch Transaxle

(cid:129) To avoid serious damage to the Automatic transaxle/ Dual Clutch Transaxle, limit the vehicle speed to 15 km/h (10
mph) and drive less than 1.5
km (1 mile) when towing.

(cid:129) Before towing, check for an Automatic transaxle/ Dual Clutch Transaxle fluid leak under your vehicle. If the Automatic transaxle/ Dual Clutch Transaxle fluid is leak- ing, a flatbed equipment or towing dolly must be used.

Maintenance

NORMAL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE The following maintenance services must be performed to ensure good emission control and performance. Keep receipts for all vehicle emission services to protect your warranty. Where both mileage and time are shown, the frequency of service is determined by whichever occurs first. *1 : Fuel tank air filter is considered to be maintenance free but periodic inspection is recommended for this maintenance sched- ule depends on fuel quality. If there are some important safety matters like fuel flow restriction, surging, loss of power, hard starting problem etc, replace the fuel filter immediately regardless of maintenance schedule and consult an authorized Kia dealer for details.

Maintenance

EXPLANATION OF SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ITEMS Engine oil and filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more frequent oil and filter changes are required.

Fuel filter A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, damage the emission system and cause multiple issues such as hard starting. If an excessive amount of foreign matter accumulates in the fuel tank, the filter may require replacement more frequently. After installing a new filter, run the engine for several minutes, and check for leaks at the connections. Fuel filters should be installed by an authorized Kia dealer.

Fuel lines, fuel hoses and con- nections Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and connections for leakage and dam- age. Have an authorized Kia dealer replace any damaged or leaking parts immediately.

Vapor hose and fuel filler cap The vapor hose and fuel filler cap should be inspected at those inter- vals specified in the maintenance schedule. Make sure that a new vapor hose or fuel filler cap is cor- rectly replaced.

Drive belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil saturation and replace if necessary. Drive belts should be checked peri- odically for proper tension and adjusted as necessary.

26

Fuel filter (for gasoline) Kia gasoline vehicle is equipped a lifetime fuel filter that integrated with the fuel tank. Regular maintenance or replacement is not needed but depends on fuel quality. If there are some important safety matters like fuel flow restriction, surging, loss of power, hard starting problem etc, fuel filter inspection or replace is needed. The Inspected or replaced by an authorized Kia dealer.

Vacuum crankcase ventilation hoses Inspect the surface of hoses for evi- dence of heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessive swelling indicate deterio- ration. Particular attention should be paid to examine those hose surfaces nearest to high heat sources, such as the exhaust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in con- tact with any heat source, sharp edges or moving component which might cause heat damage or mechanical wear. Inspect all hose connections, such as clamps and couplings, to make sure they are secure, and that no leaks are pres- ent. Hoses should be replaced immediately if there is any evidence of deterioration or damage.

Maintenance

Air cleaner filter A Genuine Kia air cleaner filter is recommended when the filter is replaced.

Coolant The coolant should be changed at the intervals specified in the mainte- nance schedule.

Spark plugs Make sure to install new spark plugs of the correct heat range.

Cooling system Check cooling system components, such as radiator, coolant reservoir, hoses and connections for leakage and damage. Replace any damaged parts.

Manual transaxle fluid (if equipped) Inspect the manual transaxle fluid according to the maintenance sched- ule.

Valve clearance (if equipped) Inspect excessive valve noise and/or engine vibration and adjust if neces- sary. An authorized Kia dealer should perform the operation.

7 27

Brake hoses and lines Visually check for proper installation, chafing, cracks, deterioration and any leakage. Replace any deteriorat- ed or damaged parts immediately.

Brake/clutch fluid Check brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir. The level should be between “MIN” and “MAX” marks on the side of the reservoir. Use only hydraulic brake fluid conforming to DOT 3 or DOT 4 specification.

Parking brake Inspect the parking brake system including the parking brake pedal and cables.

Brake discs, pads, calipers and rotors Check the pads for excessive wear, discs for run out and wear, and calipers for fluid leakage.

Maintenance

Automatic transaxle fluid (if equipped) Automatic transaxle fluid should not be checked under normal usage conditions. But in severe conditions, the fluid should be changed at an authorized Kia dealer in accordance to the scheduled maintenance at the begin- ning of this chapter.

✽✽ NOTICE Automatic transaxle fluid color is basically red. As the vehicle is driven, the auto- matic transaxle fluid will begin to look darker. It is normal condition and you should not judge the need to replace the fluid based upon the changed color.

Exhaust pipe and muffler Visually inspect the exhaust pipes, muffler and hangers for cracks, dete- rioration, or damage. Start the engine and listen carefully for any exhaust gas leakage. Tighten con- nections or replace parts as neces- sary.

Suspension mounting bolts Check the suspension connections for looseness or damage. Retighten to the specified torque.

Dual clutch transmission Fluid Inspect the dual clutch transmission fluid according to the maintenance schedule.

Steering gear box, linkage & boots/lower arm ball joint With the vehicle stopped and engine off, check for excessive free-play in the steering wheel. Check the linkage for bends or dam- age. Check the dust boots and ball joints for deterioration, cracks, or damage. Replace any damaged parts.

Drive shafts and boots Check the drive shafts, boots and clamps for cracks, deterioration, or damage. Replace any damaged parts and, if necessary, repack the grease.

Maintenance

Air conditioning refrigerant Check the air conditioning lines and connections for leakage and dam- age.

Maintenance

ENGINE COOLANT The high-pressure cooling system has a reservoir filled with year-round antifreeze coolant. The reservoir is filled at the factory. Check the antifreeze protection and coolant level at least once a year, at the beginning of the winter season, and before traveling to a colder cli- mate.

WARNING - Cooling fan

The

Use caution when working near the blade of the cooling fan. electric motor (cooling fan) is controlled by engine coolant temperature, refrigerant pres- sure and vehicle speed. It may sometimes operate even when the engine is not running.

32

Recommended engine coolant (cid:129) When adding coolant, use only deionized water or soft water for your vehicle and never mix hard water in the coolant filled at the fac- tory. An improper coolant mixture can result in serious malfunction or engine damage.

(cid:129) The engine in your vehicle has alu- minum engine parts and must be protected by an ethylene-glycol with phosphate based coolant to prevent corrosion and freezing.

(cid:129) DO NOT USE alcohol or methanol coolant or mix them with the spec- ified coolant.

(cid:129) Do not use a solution that contains more than 60% antifreeze or less than 35% antifreeze, which would reduce the effectiveness of the solution.

Checking the coolant level

OYDEMC2055

Check the condition and connections of all cooling system hoses and heater hoses. Replace any swollen or deteriorated hoses. The coolant level should be filled between F (MAX) and L (MIN) marks on the side of the coolant reservoir when the engine is cool. If the coolant level is low, add enough specified coolant or distilled (deion- ized) water to provide protection against freezing and corrosion. Bring the level to F (MAX), but do not over- fill. If frequent coolant addition is required, see an authorized Kia deal- er for a cooling system inspection.
