CAUTION

n Replacing light bulbs

l Turn off the headlights. Do not attempt to replace the bulb immediately

after turning off the headlights. The bulbs become very hot and may cause burns.

l Do not touch the glass portion of the light bulb with bare hands. Hold the

bulb by the plastic or metal portion. If the bulb is scratched or dropped it may blow out or crack.

l Fully install light bulbs and any parts used to secure them. Failing to do so may result in heat damage, fire, or water entering the headlight unit. This may damage the headlights or cause condensation to build up on the lens. l Do not attempt to take apart or repair the low beam headlight bulbs, con-

nectors, power supply circuits, or related components. Doing so could result in electric shock and serious injury or death.

n Discharge headlights

l Contact your Toyota dealer before replacing discharge headlights (includ-

ing light bulbs).

l Do not touch the high-intensity discharge headlight’s high voltage socket

when the headlights are turned on. An extremely high voltage of 20000 V will be discharged and could result in serious injury or death by electric shock.

n To prevent damage or fire

Make sure bulbs are fully seated and locked.

NOTICE

n When installing the back door trim

To prevent damage, be careful not to pinch any of the wire harnesses or connectors with the back door trim.

5-1. Essential information Event data recorder

Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control certain aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist in driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance. Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is an event data recorder (EDR) that records data in a crash or a near car crash event.

In a crash or a near car crash event

The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In a crash or a near car crash event, this device may record some or all of the follow- ing information: l Engine speed l Whether the brake pedal was applied or not l Vehicle speed l To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed l Position of the transmission shift lever l Whether the driver and front passenger wore seat belts or not l Driver's seat position l SRS airbag deployment data l SRS airbag system diagnostic data l Front passenger's occupant classification The information above is intended to be used for the purpose of improving vehicle safety performance. Unlike general data recorders, the EDR does not record sound data such as conversation between passengers.

n Front passenger detection sensor and passenger seat belt reminder

If luggage is placed on the front passenger seat, the front passenger detection sensor may cause the warning light to flash, even if a passen- ger is not sitting in the seat. If a cushion is placed on the seat, the sensor may not detect a passen- ger, and the warning light may not operate properly.

n Changing the engine oil (U.S.A. only)

Make sure to reset the oil change system. (→P. 442) n When the tire pressure warning light comes on

Check the tire inflation pressure and adjust to the appropriate level. Pushing the tire pressure warning reset switch does not turn off the tire pressure warning light.

n The tire pressure warning light may turn on due to natural causes

The tire pressure warning light may turn on due to natural causes such as natural air leaks or tire inflation pressure changes caused by temper- ature. In this case, adjusting the tire inflation pressure will turn off the warning light (after several minutes).

n When a tire is replaced with a spare tire (vehicles without run-flat

tires) The compact spare tire is not equipped with the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. If a tire goes flat, the tire pressure warning light will not turn off even though the flat tire is replaced with the spare tire. Replace the spare tire with the repaired tire and adjust the proper tire inflation pressure. The tire pressure warning light will turn off after sev- eral minutes.

n If the tire pressure warning system is inoperative

The tire pressure warning system will be disabled in the following condi- tions: (When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)

If tires not equipped with tire pressure warning valves and transmit- ters are used. If the ID code on the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters is not registered in the tire pressure warning computer.

The tire pressure warning system may be disabled in the following condi- tions: (When the condition becomes normal, the system will work properly.)

If electronic devices or facilities using similar radio wave frequencies are nearby. If a radio set at similar frequencies is in use in the vehicle. If there is a lot of snow or ice on the vehicle, in particular around the wheels or wheel housings. If non-genuine Toyota wheels are used. (Even if you use Toyota wheels, the tire pressure warning system may not work properly with some types of tires.) If tire chains are used.

n If the tire pressure warning light comes on after blinking for 1

minute frequently If the tire pressure warning light comes on after blinking for 1 minute fre- quently when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position, have it checked by your Toyota dealer.

n Customization that can be configured at Toyota dealer

The vehicle speed linked seat belt reminder buzzer can be disabled. (Customizable features →P. 565) However, Toyota recommends that the seat belt reminder buzzer be operational to alert the driver and front passen- ger that the seat belts are not fastened.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

CAUTION

n If the tire pressure warning light comes on

Be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious injury. l Vehicles with run-flat tires:

• Decelerate to the lowest appropriate speed as soon as possible.

Do not drive over 55 mph (90 km/h).

• Check and adjust the tire inflation pressure immediately. • If the tire pressure warning light comes on even after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat tire. Have the tire replaced by the nearest Toyota dealer.

• Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deterio-

rate, you could lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.

l Vehicles with standard tires:

• Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the

tire inflation pressure immediately.

• If the tire pressure warning light comes on even after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat tire. Check the tires. If the tire is flat, change to the spare tire and have the flat tire repaired by the nearest Toyota dealer.

• Avoid abrupt maneuvering and braking. If the vehicle tires deterio-

rate, you could lose control of the steering wheel or the brakes.

n If a blowout or sudden air leakage should occur

The tire pressure warning system may not activate immediately.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

CAUTION

n Maintenance of the tires

Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label (tire and load information label). (If your vehicle has tires of a differ- ent size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label [tire and load information label], you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS-tire pressure warning system) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure warning light) when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure warning light) illumi- nates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under- inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle's handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) is not a sub- stitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver's responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure warning light).

SIENNA_U_45452U.book Page 514 Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:01 AM

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency

CAUTION

Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operat- ing properly. The TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunction indi- cator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure warning light). When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously illumi- nated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended. TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunctions may occur for a vari- ety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS (tire pres- sure warning system) malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alter- nate tires and wheels allow the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) to continue to function properly.

NOTICE

n Precaution when installing a different tire

When a tire of a different specification or maker is installed, the tire pres- sure warning system may not operate properly.

5-2. Steps to take in an emergency If you have a flat tire (vehicles with run-flat tires)

Take your vehicle to the nearest Toyota dealer or authorized tire dealer as soon as possible. n Run-flat tires (A “RFT” or “DSST” mark is molded on the

sidewall)

You can continue driving a vehicle with run-flat tires even if any tire goes flat.

It is able to run for a maxi- mum of 100 miles (160 km) at a speed below 55 mph (90
km/h) after the tire pressure warning light comes on. (→P. 507)

n In some condition (such as at high temperatures)

You cannot continue driving for up to 100 miles (160 km).

n If you cannot distinguish between the standard tires and run-flat

tires Consult your Toyota dealer.

n For the detailed information on run-flat tires

See the tire warranty book.

NOTICE

n When replacing the tires

When removing or fitting the wheels, tires or the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, contact your Toyota dealer as the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter may be damaged if not handled correctly. n To avoid damaging the tire pressure warning valves and transmit-

ters Do not use liquid sealants on flat tires.

CAUTION

n Replacing a flat tire

Observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of death or serious injury: l Remove the spare tire before jacking up the vehicle. If the spare tire is removed after jacking up the vehicle, the tire carrier and the spare tire may interfere with the jack and cause a serious accident. l Never use oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.

The oil or grease can cause the wheel nuts to loosen, causing a seri- ous accident. Remove any oil or grease on the wheel bolts or wheel nuts.

l Have the wheel nuts tightened with a torque wrench to 76 ft•lbf (103

N•m, 10.5 kgf•m) as soon as possible after changing wheels. Failure to follow these precautions could cause the nuts to loosen and the wheel may fall off, which could lead to an accident causing death or serious injury.

n When using the compact spare tire

l Remember that your compact spare tire is specifically designed for use with your vehicle. Do not use your compact spare tire on another vehicle.

l Do not use more than one compact spare tire simultaneously. l Replace the compact spare tire with a standard tire as soon as possi-

ble.

l Avoid sudden acceleration, deceleration and braking, as well as sharp

cornering.

n Speed limit when using the compact spare tire

Do not drive at speeds in excess of 50 mph (80 km/h) when a compact spare tire is installed on the vehicle. The compact spare tire is not designed for driving at high speeds. Failing to observe this precaution may lead to an accident causing death or seri- ous injury.
