To remove: Support the sun shade pan- el with your hand while you unlock the sun shade by turning the knob counter- clockwise. To install: Hang the two hinges of the sun shade panel onto the hooks pro- vided. Then push up the sun shade panel while turning the knob counter- clockwise.

CAUTION

For safety, do not remove the sun shade while driving.

Seats While the vehicle is being driven, all ve- hicle occupants should have the seatback upright, sit well back in the seat and prop- erly wear the seat belts provided.

Front seats— —Seat adjustment precautions Adjust the driver’s seat so that the foot pedals, steering wheel and instrument panel controls are within easy reach of the driver.

To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, avoid reclining the seatback any more than needed. The seat belts provide maxi- mum protection in a frontal or rear collision when the driver and the pas- senger are sitting up straight and well back If you are reclined, the lap belt may slide past your hips and apply restraint forces directly to the abdomen. Therefore, in the event of a frontal collision, the risk of personal injury may increase with increasing recline of the seat- back.

Seat belts— —Seat belt precautions Toyota strongly urges that the driver and passengers in the vehicle be properly re- strained at all times with the seat belts provided. Failure to do so could increase the chance of injury and/or the severity of injury in accidents. Child. Use a child restraint system ap- propriate for the child until the child be- comes large enough to properly wear the vehicle’s seat belts. See “Child restraint” for details. NORMAL- CAB MODELS— If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. XTRA- CAB MODELS— If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. If a child must sit in the front seat, the seat belts should be worn properly. If an accident occurs and the seat belts are not worn properly, the force of the rapid infla- tion of the airbag may cause death or serious injury to the child.

Do not allow the child to stand up or kneel on either rear or front seats. An unrestrained child could suffer serious in- jury or death during emergency braking or a collision. If they need cleaning, use a mild soap solution or lukewarm water. Never use bleach, dye, or abrasive clean- ers—they may severely weaken the belts. (See “Cleaning the interior” in Section 5.)

(cid:1) Replace the belt assembly (includ- ing bolts) if it has been used in a severe impact. The entire assembly should be replaced even if damage is not obvious.

Adjust the seat as needed (front seats only) and sit up straight and well back in the seat. To fasten your belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the tab into the buckle. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. The seat belt length automatically adjusts to your size and the seat position. The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It also may lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend, and you can move around freely.

CAUTION

Always make sure the shoulder belt is positioned across the center of your shoulder. The belt should be kept away from your neck, but not falling off your shoulder. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of protection in an accident and cause severe injuries in a collision.

If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor. When a passenger’s shoulder belt is com- pletely extended and retracted even slightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This fea- ture is used to hold the child restraint system securely. (For details, see “Child restraint” in this section.) To free the belt again, fully retract the belt and then pull the belt out once more.

To release the belt, press the buckle- re- lease button.

The buckles can be fixed when not in use. When taking out the buckle from the hold- er, pull on the belt webbing to remove the buckle from the lower portion.

Please contact your local Toyota dealer so that the dealer can order the proper re- quired length for the extender. When using the seat belt extender, observe the following. Failure to fol- low these instructions could result in less effectiveness of the seat belt re- straint system in case of vehicle acci- dent, increasing the chance of per- sonal injury. (cid:1) Never use the seat belt extender if you can fasten the seat belt without it.

To connect the extender to the seat belt, insert the tab into the seat belt buckle so that the “PRESS” signs on the buckle- release buttons of the ex- tender and the seat belt are both facing outward as shown. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. When releasing the seat belt, press on the buckle- release button on the extender, not on the seat belt. This helps prevent damage to the vehicle interior and extend- er itself. When not and store in the vehicle for future use.

—Front seat belt pretensioners

The driver and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioners are designed to be activated in response to a severe fron- tal impact. When the airbag sensor detects the shock of a severe frontal impact, the front seat belt is quickly drawn back in by the re- tractor so that the belt snugly restrains the front seat occupants. The seat belt pretensioners are activated even with no passenger in the front seat. Collisions occurring at certain speeds and angles may cause the seat belt preten- sioners and SRS airbags not to operate all together.

This indicator comes on when the igni- tion key is turned to the “ACC” or “ON” position. It goes off after about 6 seconds. This means the front seat belt pretensioners are operating proper- ly. This warning the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sen- sors, seat belt pretensioner assemblies, warning interconnecting wiring and power sources. (For details, see “Service reminder indicators and warning buzzers” in Section 1- 5.)

When a seat belt pretensioner is acti- vated, an operating noise may be heard and a small amount of smoke- like gas may be released. This gas is harmless and does not indicate that a fire is occur- ring. Once the seat belt pretensioner has been activated, the seat belt retractor remains locked.

CAUTION

Do not modify, remove, strike or open the front seat belt pretensioner as- semblies, airbag sensor or surround- ing area or wiring. Doing any of these may cause sudden operation of the front seat belt pretensioners or disable the system, which could re- sult in death or serious personal inju- ry. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious inju- ries.

NOTICE

Do not perform any of the following changes without consulting your Toyota dealer. Such changes can interfere with proper operation of the seat belt pretensioners in some cases. (cid:1) Installation of electronic devices such as a mobile two-way radio, cassette tape player or compact disc player

SRS driver and front passenger airbags

The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys- tem) airbags are designed to provide further protection for occupants in the following seats in addition to the prima- ry safety protection provided by the seat belts. (cid:1) Models with separate front seats—The SRS airbags are designed to protect the driver and front passenger.

(cid:1) Models with bench

front seats—The SRS airbags are designed to protect the driver and right- front passenger. They are not designed to protect occu- pant in the center position.

In response to a severe frontal impact, the SRS airbags work together with the seat belts to help prevent or reduce injury by inflating. The SRS airbags help to re- duce injuries mainly to the driver’s or front passenger’s head or chest directly hitting the steering wheel or dashboard. When the passenger airbag manual on- off switch is in the “ON” position, the passenger air- bag is activated even with no passenger in the front seat. Be sure to wear your seat belt.

CAUTION

A driver or front passenger too close to the steering wheel or dashboard during airbag deployment can be killed or seriously injured. Toyota strongly recommends that: (cid:1) The driver sit as far back as pos- sible from the steering wheel while still maintaining control of the ve- hicle.

However, threshold velocity will be considerably higher if the vehicle strikes an object, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole, which can move or deform on impact, or if it is involved in an underride collision (e.g. a collision in which the nose of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under, the bed of a truck, etc.). It is possible that in some collisions at the lower zone of airbag sensor detection and activation the SRS airbags and seat belt pretensioners will not operate all together. For the safety of all occupants, always wear your seat belts.

The SRS airbags are not designed to inflate if the vehicle is involved in a side or rear collision, if it rolls over, or if it is involved in a low- speed frontal collision.

The SRS airbag system is designed to activate in response to a severe frontal impact within the shaded area between the arrows in the illustration. The SRS airbags will deploy if the severi- ty of the impact is above the designed threshold level, comparable to an approxi- mate 25 km/h (15 mph) collision when impacting straight into a fixed barrier that does not move or deform. If the severity of the impact is below the above threshold the SRS airbags may not deploy.

In a severe frontal impact, sensors detect deceleration and the system triggers the airbag inflators. Then a chemical reaction in the airbags with non- toxic gas to help restrain the forward motion of the occupants. When the airbags inflate, they produce a fairly loud noise and release some smoke and residue along with non- toxic gas. This does not indicate a fire. This gas is nor- mally harmless; however, for those who have delicate skin, it may cause a minor skin irritation. Be sure to wash off any residue as soon as possible to prevent any potential skin irritation. Deployment of the airbags happens in a fraction of a second, so the airbags must inflate with considerable force. While the system is designed to reduce serious inju- ries, it may also cause minor burns or abrasions and swelling. Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel hub, dashboard) may be hot for several minutes, but the airbags themselves will not be hot. The airbags are designed to inflate only once.

CAUTION

(cid:1) The SRS airbag system is designed only as a supplement to the prima- ry protection of the driver side and front passenger side seat belt sys- tems. The front seat occupants can be killed or seriously injured by an inflating airbag if they do not wear the available seat belts. During sud- den braking just before a collision, an unrestrained driver or front pas- senger can move forward into direct contact with or close proximity to the airbag which may then deploy during the collision. To ensure max- imum protection in an accident, the driver and all passengers in the ve- hicle must wear their seat belts. Wearing a seat belt during an acci- dent reduces the chances of death or serious injury or being thrown out of the vehicle. For instructions and precautions concerning the seat belt system, see “Seat belts” in this section.

(cid:1) Improperly seated and/or restrained infants and children can be killed or seriously injured by a deploying airbag. An infant or child who is too small to use a seat belt should be properly secured using a child restraint system. To change the steering wheel angle: Type A—Hold the steering wheel, pull up the lock release lever, tilt the steer- ing wheel to the desired angle and re- lease the lever. Type B—Hold the steering wheel, pull the lock release lever toward you, tilt the steering wheel to the desired angle and release the lever. When the steering wheel is in a low posi- tion, it will spring up as you release the lock release lever.

(cid:1) After adjusting the steering wheel, try moving it up and down to make sure it is locked in position.

Adjust the mirror so that you can just see the side of your vehicle in the mir- ror. Any object seen in a convex mirror will look smaller and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror.
