For your information
Main Owner’s Manual
Please note that this manual covers all models and all equipment, including options. Therefore, you may find some explanations for equipment not installed on your vehicle. All specifications provided in this manual are current at the time of printing. However, because of the Toyota policy of continual product improvement, we reserve the right to make changes at any time without notice. Depending on specifications, the vehicle shown in the illustrations may differ from your vehicle in terms of equipment.
Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine
Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction.
Accessories, spare parts and modification of your Toyota
A wide variety of non-genuine spare parts and accessories for Toyota vehicles are currently available on the market. You should know that these parts are not covered by Toyota warranty and that Toyota is not responsible for their performance, repair, or replacement, or for any damage they may cause to, or adverse effect they may have on, your Toyota vehicle. This vehicle should not be modified with non-genuine Toyota products. Modification with non-genuine Toyota products could affect its performance, safety or durability, and may even violate governmental regulations. In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from the modification may not be covered under warranty.
15
Installation of a mobile two-way radio system
The installation of a mobile two-way radio system in your vehicle could affect electronic systems such as: ●Multiport fuel injection system/sequential multiport fuel injection system ●Cruise control system ●Anti-lock brake system ●SRS airbag system ●Seat belt pretensioner system Be sure to check with your Toyota dealer for precautionary measures or spe- cial instructions regarding installation of a mobile two-way radio system.
Vehicle data recordings
Your Toyota is equipped with several sophisticated computers that will record data, such as: • Engine speed • Accelerator status • Brake status • Vehicle speed • Shift position (vehicles with an automatic transmission) The recorded data varies according to the vehicle grade level and options with which it is equipped. Furthermore, these computers do not record con- versations, sounds or pictures. ● Data usage Toyota may use the data recorded in these computers to diagnose malfunc- tions, conduct research and development, and improve quality. Toyota will not disclose the recorded data to a third party except: • With the consent of the vehicle owner or with the consent of the lessee if
•
the vehicle is leased In response to an official request by the police, a court of law or a govern- ment agency
• For use by Toyota in a lawsuit • For research purposes where the data is not tied to a specific vehicle or
vehicle owner
16
Event data recorder
This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). The main pur- pose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations, such as an air bag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in understanding how a vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related to vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as: • How various systems in your vehicle were operating; • Whether or not the driver and passenger safety belts were buckled/fas-
tened;
pedal; and,
• How far (if at all) the driver was depressing the accelerator and/or brake
• How fast the vehicle was traveling. These data can help provide a better understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur. NOTE: EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situ- ation occurs; no data are recorded by the EDR under normal driving condi- tions and no personal data (e.g., name, gender, age, and crash location) are recorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, could combine the EDR data with the type of personally identifying data routinely acquired during a crash investigation. To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required, and access to the vehicle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such as law enforcement, that have the special equipment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.
17
● Disclosure of the EDR data Toyota will not disclose the data recorded in an EDR to a third party except when: • An agreement from the vehicle’s owner (or the lessee for a leased vehicle)
•
is obtained In response to an official request by the police, a court of law or a govern- ment agency
• For use by Toyota in a lawsuit However, if necessary, Toyota may: • Use the data for research on vehicle safety performance • Disclose the data to a third party for research purposes without disclosing
information about the specific vehicle or vehicle owner
Scrapping of your Toyota
The SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner devices in your Toyota contain explosive chemicals. If the vehicle is scrapped with the airbags and seat belt pretensioners left as they are, this may cause an accident such as fire. Be sure to have the systems of the SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner removed and disposed of by a qualified service shop or by your Toyota dealer before you scrap your vehicle.
Perchlorate Material
Special handling may apply, See www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate. Your vehicle has components that may contain perchlorate. These compo- nents may include airbags, seat belt pretensioners, and wireless remote con- trol batteries.
18
CAUTION
■General precautions while driving
Driving under the influence: Never drive your vehicle when under the influ- ence of alcohol or drugs that have impaired your ability to operate your vehi- cle. Alcohol and certain drugs delay reaction time, impair judgment and reduce coordination, which could lead to an accident that could result in death or serious injury. Defensive driving: Always drive defensively. Anticipate mistakes that other drivers or pedestrians might make and be ready to avoid accidents. Driver distraction: Always give your full attention to driving. Anything that dis- tracts the driver, such as adjusting controls, talking on a cellular phone or reading can result in a collision with resulting death or serious injury to you, your occupants or others.
■General precaution regarding children’s safety
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle, and never allow children to have or use the key. Children may be able to start the vehicle or shift the vehicle into neutral. There is also a danger that children may injure themselves by playing with the cigarette lighter, the windows, or other features of the vehicle. In addi- tion, heat build-up or extremely cold temperatures inside the vehicle can be fatal to children.

■Operation signals
A buzzer sounds and the emergency flashers flash to indicate that the doors have been locked/unlocked. (Locked: Once; Unlocked: Twice)
■Conditions affecting operation
The smart key system uses weak radio waves. In the following situations, the communication between the electronic key and the vehicle may be affected, preventing the smart key system and wireless remote control from operating properly. (Ways of coping: →P. 452) ●When the electronic key battery is depleted ●Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio station, large dis- play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio waves or electri- cal noise
●When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone, cordless phone or other
wireless communication devices
●When the electronic key is in contact with, or is covered by the following
metallic objects • Cards to which aluminum foil is attached • Cigarette boxes that have aluminum foil inside • Metallic wallets or bags • Coins • Hand warmers made of metal • Media such as CDs and DVDs
●When multiple electronic keys are in the vicinity ●When carrying or using the electronic key together with the following
devices that emit radio waves • Another vehicle's electronic key or a wireless key that emits radio
waves
• Personal computers or personal digital assistants (PDAs) • Digital audio players • Portable game systems

■Battery-saving function
In the following circumstances, the entry function is disabled in order to pre- vent the vehicle and electronic key batteries from discharging. ●When the entry function has not been used for 2 weeks or more ●When the electronic key has been left within approximately 6 ft. (2 m) of
the vehicle for 10 minutes or more
The system will resume operation when... ●The vehicle is locked using the door handle lock switch. ●The vehicle is locked/unlocked using the wireless remote control func-
tion. (→P. 36)
●The vehicle is locked/unlocked using the mechanical key. (→P. 452)
30
1-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors and trunk
■Electronic key battery depletion
●The standard battery life is 1 to 2 years. ●The battery becomes depleted even if the electronic key is not used because the key always receives radio waves. If the smart key system or the wireless remote control function does not operate, or the detection area becomes smaller, the battery may be depleted. Replace the battery when necessary. (→P. 388)
●If the battery becomes low, an alarm will sound in the cabin when the
engine stops. (→P. 32)
●To avoid serious deterioration, do not leave the electronic key within 3 ft. (1 m) of the following electrical appliances that produce a magnetic field: • TVs • Personal computers • Recharging cellular phones or cordless phones • Table lamps
■To operate the system properly
Make sure to carry the electronic key when operating the system. Do not get the electronic key too close to the vehicle when operating the system from the outside of the vehicle. Depending on the position and holding condition of the electronic key, the key may not be detected correctly and the system may not operate properly. (The alarm may go off accidentally, or the door lock prevention may not func- tion.)
■Note for the smart key system
●Even when the electronic key is within the effective range (detection
areas), the system may not operate properly in the following cases. • The electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near the ground, or in a high place when the doors are locked or unlocked.
• The electronic key is near the ground or in a high place, or too close to
the rear bumper center when the trunk is unlocked.
• The electronic key is on the instrument panel, package tray, floor, or in the auxiliary box of the driver's side instrument panel or glove box when the engine is started or “ENGINE START STOP” switch modes are changed.
31
1-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors and trunk
●Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near the door pockets when exiting the vehicle. Depending on the radio wave reception conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the cabin and the door will become lockable from the outside, possibly trapping the electronic key inside the vehicle.
●As long as the electronic key is within the effective range, the doors may
be locked or unlocked by anyone.
●Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to
start the engine if the electronic key is near the window.
●The doors may unlock if a large amount of water splashes on the door handle, such as in the rain or in a car wash. (The doors will automatically be locked after approximately 60 seconds if the doors are not opened and closed.)
●Gripping the door handle when wearing a glove may not unlock the door. ●If the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors when the elec- tronic key is near the vehicle, there is a possibility that the door may not be unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote control to unlock the doors.)
●A sudden approach to the effective range or door handle may prevent the doors from being unlocked. In this case, return the door handle to the original position and check that the doors unlock before pulling the door handle again.
■When the vehicle is not driven for extended periods
To prevent theft of the vehicle, do not leave the electronic key within 6 ft. (2
m) of the vehicle.
■Security feature
If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.
■Alarms and warning indicators
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warning lights are used to reduce the chance of vehicle theft and accidents resulting from erro- neous operation. ●When any warning lights come on:
Take appropriate measures according to which warning light comes on. (→P. 424)

CAUTION
■Caution while driving
●Before driving the vehicle, make sure that the trunk lid is fully closed. If the trunk lid is not fully closed, it may open unexpectedly while driving, caus- ing an accident.
●Keep the trunk lid closed while driving.
If the trunk lid is left open, it may hit near-by objects while driving or lug- gage in the trunk may be unexpectedly thrown out, causing an accident. In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a seri- ous health hazard. Make sure to close the trunk lid before driving.
●Never let anyone sit in the trunk. In the event of sudden braking or a colli-
sion, they are susceptible to death or serious injury.
■When children are in the vehicle Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury. ●Do not allow children to enter the trunk.
If a child is accidentally locked in the trunk, they could overheat or suffo- cate.
●Do not allow a child to open or close the trunk lid.
Doing so may cause the trunk lid to operate unexpectedly, or cause the child’s hands, head, or neck to be caught by the closing trunk lid.
49
1-2. Opening, closing and locking the doors and trunk
CAUTION
■Using the trunk
Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resulting in seri- ous injury. ●Remove any heavy loads, such as snow and ice, from the trunk lid before opening it. Failure to do so may cause the trunk lid to suddenly shut again after it is opened.
●When opening or closing the trunk lid, thoroughly check to make sure the
surrounding area is safe.
●If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let them know that
the trunk is about to open or close.
●Use caution when opening or closing the trunk lid in windy weather as it
may move abruptly in strong wind.
●The trunk lid may suddenly shut if it is not opened fully. It is more difficult to open or close the trunk lid on an incline than on a level surface, so beware of the trunk lid unexpectedly opening or closing by itself. Make sure that the trunk lid is fully open and secure before using the trunk.
●When closing the trunk lid, take extra care to prevent your fingers etc. from being caught.
●When closing the trunk lid, make sure
to press it lightly on its outer surface.
●Do not attach any accessories other than genuine Toyota parts to the trunk lid. Such additional weight on the trunk lid may cause the lid to suddenly shut again after it is opened.

Seat belt pretensioners (front seats)
The pretensioner helps the seat belt to quickly restrain the occu- pant by retracting the seat belt when the vehicle is subjected to certain types of severe frontal collision.
The pretensioner may not acti- vate in the event of a minor frontal impact, a side impact or a rear impact.
60
1-3. Adjustable components (seats, mirrors, steering wheel)
■Emergency locking retractor (ELR)
The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It may also lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend so that you can move around fully.
■Automatic locking retractor (ALR)
When a passenger's shoulder belt is completely extended and then retracted even slightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This feature is used to hold the child restraint system (CRS) firmly. To free the belt again, fully retract the belt and then pull the belt out once more. (→P. 107)
■Pregnant women
Obtain medical advice and wear the seat belt in the proper way. (→P. 58) Women who are pregnant should position the lap belt as low as possible over the hips in the same manner as other occu- pants. Extend the shoulder belt com- pletely over the shoulder and position the belt across the chest. Avoid belt contact over the rounding of the abdominal area. If the seat belt is not worn properly, not only a pregnant woman, but also the fetus could suffer death or serious injury as a result of sudden braking or a collision.
■People suffering illness
Obtain medical advice and wear the seat belt in the proper way.

■Child seat belt usage
The seat belts of your vehicle were principally designed for persons of adult size. ●Use a child restraint system appropriate for the child, until the child becomes large enough to properly wear the vehicle's seat belt. (→P. 103) ●When the child becomes large enough to properly wear the vehicle's seat
belt, follow the instructions on P. 58 regarding seat belt usage. ■Replacing the belt after the pretensioner has been activated
If the vehicle is involved in multiple collisions, the pretensioner will activate for the first collision, but will not activate for the second or subsequent colli- sions.
