Remember that by reducing glare you also lose some rear view clarity.

Adjust the mirror so that you can just see the rear of your vehicle in the mir- ror. This mirror is equipped with auto anti− glare function. The function is designed to reduce glare from the headlights of the vehicle behind you during night driving. When the “POWER” switch is set at ON, the inside rear view mirror always turns on in the automatic function mode. The indicator illuminates to show you that the function is on.

Vanity mirrors

In automatic function mode, if the mirror detects light from the headlights of the the mirror surface vehicle behind you, darkens slightly the reflected light. To turn off and on the automatic function, push the “AUTO” switch. Adjust it before driving so that the rear view is in the best condition. When the inside air temperature is low, it may take a little longer for the mirror to darken the detection of headlights.

When the tail lights/headlights are turned on, the brightness of the instrument clus- ter will be reduced slightly unless the in- strument panel light control knob is turned fully clockwise. However, the brightness of the instrument cluster will not be reduced in daytime lights/headlights are even when turned on. Daytime Running Light (DRL) system The Daytime Running Light (DRL) system can make it easier for others to see the front of your vehicle during the day. The DRL system can be helpful in many differ- ent driving conditions, but they can be especially helpful in the short periods after dawn and before sunset. The DRL system will make your headlights come on at a reduced brightness when: D The “POWER” switch is set at ON with

D The light switch is in the “AUTO” posi- tion with the headlights off or position 1.


D The parking brake is released. To turn on the other exterior lights and instrument panel lights, twist the knob to position 1. High−Low beams—For high beams, turn the headlights on and push the lever away from you (position 1). Pull the lever to- ward you (position 2) for low beams. The headlight high beam light indicator (blue light) on the instrument panel will tell you that the high beams are on. Flashing the high beam headlights (position 3)—Pull the way back. The high beam headlights turn off when you release the lever. You can flash the high beam headlights even when the headlights are off.

TURN SIGNALS To signal a turn, push the headlight/ turn signal lever up or down to position 1. The “POWER” switch must be set at ON. The lever automatically returns after you make a turn, but you may have to return it by hand after you change lanes. To signal a lane change, move the lever up or down to the pressure point (position 2) and hold it. If the turn signal indicator lights (green lights) on the instrument panel flash faster than normal, a front or rear turn signal bulb is burned out. See “Replacing light bulbs” on page 373 in Section 7−3.

FRONT PERSONAL LIGHTS To turn on light, push the lens. To turn it off, push the lens once again.

REAR PERSONAL LIGHTS (vehicles with moon roof) To turn on the rear personal light, push the switch. To turn it off, push the switch once again. By gently adjusting the shade of the rear personal light, you can change the direc- tion of the light to suit your preference. When either of is opened, the light on that side turns on automatically. Closing the rear side doors will turn the lights off.

Illuminated entry system The the “POWER” switch light come on and remain on for about 15 seconds when you carry the registered key into the entry function actuation area. For further information of entry function actuation area, see “Smart key system” on page 32 in Sec- tion 1−2. If all the “POWER” switch is set at ACC or ON, the lights will fade out. If all the doors are locked, the lights will fade out. To prevent the 12 volt battery being dis- charged, all of the lights will automatically turn off when is turned off, and the door is left opened for about 20 minutes. When any of the doors are unlocked with wireless remote control function or me- chanical key, the lights will come on and remain on for about 15 seconds before fading out. When any of the doors are opened, the lights will come on and remain on for about 15 seconds before fading out.

Rotating the band on the lever lets you adjust the wiper time interval when the wiper lever is in the intermittent position (position 1). Twist to increase the time between sweeps, and downward to decrease it. To spray washer fluid, pull the lever toward you. If the windshield wipers are off, they will operate a couple of times after the washer sprays. For instructions on adding washer fluid, see “Adding washer fluid” on page 373 in Section 7−3. In freezing weather, warm the windshield with the defroster before using the washer. This will help prevent fluid from freezing on your windshield, which can block your vision.

When waxing your vehicle, make sure that the washer nozzles do not become blocked. If a nozzle becomes blocked, contact your Toyota dealer to have the vehicle serviced.

Rear window and outside rear view mirror defoggers


To defog or defrost the rear window, push the switch. The “POWER” switch must be set at ON. The thin heater wires on the inside of the rear window will quickly clear the sur- faces. An indicator light will illuminate to indicate the defogger is operating. Heater panels mirrors will also quickly clear faces. Push the switch once again to turn the defogger off.

The system will automatically shut off when the operation time has been com- pleted. The operation time is between 15
minutes and 1 hour depending on the am- bient temperature and vehicle speed.


CAUTION


Since the mirror surfaces can get hot do not touch them when the defogger switch is on.

The defoggers are not designed for drying rain water or for melting snow. If the outside rear view mirrors are heavi- ly coated with ice, use a spray de−icer before operating the switch.

Engine coolant temperature gauge


If the fuel tank is completely empty, the malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Fill the fuel tank immediately. The indicator lamp goes off after driving several times. If the indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

Fuel economy meter


When the needle is in the blue zone, the coolant temperature is cold. Heat may not be available while the coolant temperature is the blue zone. Your vehicle may overheat during severe operating conditions, such as: D Driving up a long hill on a hot day. D Reducing speed or stopping after high


speed driving.


D Idling for a long period with the air conditioning on in stop−and−go traffic.


NOTICE


z Do not remove the thermostat


in the engine cooling system as this may cause the engine to overheat. The thermostat is designed to con- trol the flow of coolant to keep the temperature of the engine within the specified operating range.


z Do not continue driving with an overheated engine. See “If your ve- hicle overheats” on page 317 in Section 4.

The distance the vehicle can travel with the remaining is calculated and displayed based on the quantity of re- maining fuel and past fuel consumption. The driving range display the approximate distance that you can drive until is different from the actual distance traveled. If the fuel gauge malfunctions, the mileage figure will not appear. When the vehicle is refueled, the driving range is recalculated. The actual driving range varies with driv- ing habits and road conditions. If fuel con- sumption is good, the driving range will be longer than indicated. If fuel consumption is poor, the driving range will be shorter than indicated. If the low fuel level warning light comes on, refuel the vehicle even if the display indicates that the vehicle can be driven further.

The outside temperature display cates the outside air temperature. The displayed ranges −40_C (−40_F) up to 50_C (122_F). If an abnormality exists in the connection of the outside air temperature sensor, “−−” or “E” will appear on the display. If “−−” or “E” appears on the display, contact your Toyota dealer. There may be a case that “−−” appears momentarily when the “POWER” switch is quickly set to ON. It is normal if it goes out soon.

If the vehicle speed rises above 20 km/h (12 mph) with the seat belt unfastened, the buzzer will sound for about 10 sec- onds.
