(k) Low Tire Pressure Warning Light This light warns that the tire pressure of one or more of your tires (including the spare low. The light comes on when the “POWER” switch is set at ON. It goes off when the “READY” light comes on. This indicates that the tire pressure warning system is functioning properly. If the warning light comes on, stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as pos- sible and check that the inflation pressure of all tires (including the spare tire) is as specified on the tire and loading informa- tion inflation pressure” on page 359 in Section 7−2.) If a buzzer sounds and the master warn- ing light comes on for 5 seconds when pressing the “POWER” switch, this indi- cates that the key is not in the vehicle. The message “KEY IS NOT DETECTED” will also appear on the multi−information display. If the brake pedal is depressed, the in- dicator light will turn green, regardless of which mode is selected. When the indicator is green, pressing the “POWER” switch once turns the hybrid system on. (For starting tips, see “How to start the hybrid system” on page 301

When is changed from ON (with the hybrid system turned off) to ACC, “DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL” will appear on the multi−information display. If the “POWER” switch blinks, this indicates a malfunction of the push start system. Turn off immediately and contact your Toyota dealer. Approximately five hours after the hybrid system is turned off, you may hear sound coming from underneath the trunk for sev- eral minutes. This is normal operation and does not indicate a malfunction. (See “Leak detection pump” on page ix.) It is not a malfunction if the needle on all meters and gauges move slightly when the “POWER” switch is set at ACC, ON or when the hybrid system is turned on.

NOTICE

Do not leave the “POWER” switch at ACC or ON with the hybrid system turned off. The 12 volt battery will discharge.

(b) Normal driving 1. Start the hybrid system as instructed in “How to start the hybrid system” on page 301 in Section 3. The transmis- sion must be in “P”.

2. With your foot holding down the brake

pedal, shift the selector lever to “D”.

CAUTION

Never put your foot on the accelera- tor pedal while shifting.

3. Release the parking brake and brake the accelerator pedal

pedal. Depress slowly for smooth starting.

CAUTION

Always keep your foot on the brake pedal while stopped with the hybrid system on. This prevents the vehicle from creeping.

NOTICE

Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake to hold the vehicle on an upgrade. Do not attempt to hold the vehicle using the accelerator ped- al, as this can cause the transmission to overheat.

(c) Using engine braking To use engine braking intentionally, shift the selector lever to the “B” position and take your foot off the accelerator pedal. During high speed driving you may feel that engine braking is less effective than that of conventional vehicle. Do not continue normal driving with the transmission long time. This may cause decreased fuel econo- my.

Be careful when using engine braking on a slippery surface. Abrupt shifting could cause the vehicle to spin or skid.

(d) Backing up 1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop. 2. With the brake pedal held down with your foot, shift the selector lever to the “R” position.

Never shift into reverse while the ve- hicle is moving.

(e) Parking 1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop. 2. With

the brake pedal pressed down, fully depress the parking brake pedal to apply the parking brake securely.

the brake pedal pressed down, shift the selector lever to the “P” posi- tion.

When turning the hybrid system off, put the transmission in the “P” position.

CAUTION

Never attempt to move the selector lever into “P” position under any cir- cumstances while the vehicle is mov- ing. Serious mechanical damage and loss of vehicle control may result.

Vehicle dynamics integrated management Vehicle dynamics integrated manage- ment (VDIM) is designed to control ve- hicle motion continuously using all pos- sible functions to stabilize the motion. It is important to keep the tires in good condition for the system to properly control vehicle motion. Refer to the in- formation tires on pages 359
through 367 in Section 7−2. The system has the functions listed below. Each function becomes operational when the vehicle speed exceeds the speeds as shown below. D Brake assist function

While the VDIM is using its various func- tions to stabilize vehicle motion, the slip indicator in the instrument cluster flashes and the buzzer sounds. Drive carefully when you are in situations where the indi- cator flashes. You may feel some vibra- tions from the underbody and you may feel some the steering wheel when the VDIM is using its various functions.

If “CHECK VSC SYSTEM” appears on the multi−information display, the trac- tion control and vehicle stability control functions may not operate properly. Al- though the brake system operates nor- mally without functions, drive carefully and have your vehicle checked by a Toyota dealer as soon as possible. For details, see “—Messages” on page 140 in Section 1−6.

BRAKE ASSIST FUNCTION The brake assist function is designed to assist with emergency braking. When the driver suddenly depresses the brake ped- al, the device treats it as emergency brak- ing and adds braking force. If you slam the brakes on or apply the brakes more firmly, more powerful braking will be applied.

CAUTION

The brake assist function is not de- signed to shorten braking distance. Always drive at a moderate speed and maintain a safe distance from the ve- hicle in front of you. Depending on road conditions, braking distance may be longer than that of a vehicle with- out the brake assist device. If tire chains are used, braking distance may become longer.

ANTI−LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FUNCTION The anti−lock brake system function is de- signed the wheels during sudden braking or when braking on slippery road conditions. This assists in providing directional stability and steering performance of the vehicle under these circumstances.

Effective way to press the ABS brake pedal: When is de- pressed and the anti−lock brake system function is in action, the slip indicator flashes. In this situation, to let the anti− lock brake system work for you, just hold the brake pedal down more firmly. Do not pump the brake in a panic stop. This will result in reduced braking per- formance.

Depressing the brake pedal on slippery road surfaces such as on a manhole cov- er, a steel plate at a construction site, joints in a bridge, etc. on a rainy day tends to activate the anti−lock brake sys- tem function.

When the anti−lock brake system function is activated, you may hear the anti−lock brake system function operating sound and the vibrations of the vehicle body and steering wheel. You may also hear the motor sound in the engine compartment even after the vehicle is stopped. Howev- er, it does not indicate any trouble.

CAUTION

The anti−lock brake system function is not designed to shorten braking distance. Always drive at a moderate speed and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. De- pending on road conditions, braking distance may be longer than that of a vehicle without the anti−lock brake system. If tire chains are used, brak- ing distance may become longer.

Compared with vehicles without an anti−lock brake device, your vehicle may require a longer stopping dis- tance in the following cases: D Driving on rough, gravel or snow−

covered roads.

D Driving with tire chains installed. D Driving over the steps such as the

joints on the road.

D Driving on roads where the road surface is pitted or has other differ- ences in surface height.

If tire grip performance exceeds its capability, or if hydroplaning occurs during high speed driving in the rain, the anti−lock brake system does not provide vehicle control.

TRACTION CONTROL FUNCTION The traction control function is designed to help prevent skid of the drive wheels dur- ing sudden acceleration on slippery road surfaces. You may feel vibration or noise in your vehicle, caused by operation of the brakes.

CAUTION

Under certain slippery road condi- tions, full traction of the vehicle and power against drive wheels cannot be maintained, even though the traction control system is in operation. Do not drive the vehicle under any speed or maneuvering conditions which may cause traction control. In situations where the road surface is covered with ice or snow, your vehicle should be fitted with tire chains. Always snow drive at a moderate speed.

VEHICLE FUNCTION The vehicle stability control function is de- signed to help prevent skid of the wheels while cornering on slippery road surfaces or when turning the steering wheel abrupt- ly. The system controls the driving and brak- ing forces on each tire and also controls the power steering assistance to help the driver to recover vehicle stability.

CAUTION

Depending on the road conditions, the vehicle stability control function may not be able to stabilize your ve- hicle. Always drive at a moderate speed.

The tire pressure warning light may turn on due to natural causes such as natural air leaks or tire inflation pressure changes caused by temperature. In this case, ad- justing the tire inflation pressure will turn off the light after a few minutes. Pushing the tire pressure warning reset switch does not turn off the tire pressure warning light. Adjusting the tire inflation pressure will turn off the light. The compact spare tire is not equipped with the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. If a tire goes flat, the warning light will not turn off even though the flat tire is replaced with the spare tire. Re- place the spare tire with the repaired tire and adjust the proper tire inflation pressur- e. The tire pressure warning light will turn off after a few minutes.

CAUTION

Each tire, including the spare (if pro- vided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label (tire and load information label). (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label (tire and load information label), you should determine the proper tire infla- tion pressure for those tires.)

As an added safety feature, your ve- hicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS– tire pressure warning system) that il- luminates a low tire pressure telltale (tire pressure warning light) when one or more of your tires is significantly under−inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale (tire pres- sure warning illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a sig- nificantly under−inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under−inflation also re- duces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle’s han- dling and stopping ability.

If you push the tire pressure reset switch while vehicle is moving, initialization is not performed. When parking, firmly apply the parking brake to avoid inadvertent creeping. To set: Fully depress the parking brake pedal. For better holding power, first de- press the brake pedal and hold it while setting the parking brake. To release: Depress pedal while depressing the brake pedal. To remind you that the parking brake is set, the parking brake reminder light in the instrument panel remains on until you release the parking brake. A warning message “PARK BRAKE” ap- pears on the multi−information display and a warning tone sounds to remind you to release the parking brake when the ve- hicle speed rises above 5 km/h (3 mph) with the parking brake is applied.

Cruise control The cruise control is designed to main- tain a set cruising speed without requir- ing the driver to operate the accelera- tor. Cruising speed can be set to any speed above 40 km/h (25 mph). Within the limits of the vehicle capabili- ties, cruising speed can be maintained up or down grades. However, changes in ve- hicle speed may occur on steeper grades.

CAUTION

D To help maintain maximum control of your vehicle, do not use the cruise control when driving in heavy or varying traffic, or on slip- pery (rainy, icy or snow−covered) or winding roads.

If you need acceleration—for example, when passing—depress the accelerator pedal enough for the vehicle to exceed the set speed. When you release it, the vehicle will return to the speed set prior to the acceleration. CANCELLING THE CRUISE CONTROL The cruise control may be temporarily cancelled by the driver or by the system itself under certain circumstances. SETTING THE CRUISING SPEED The transmission must be in “D” before you set the cruising speed. Bring your vehicle to the desired speed, push the lever down in the “− SET” direc- tion and release it. This sets the vehicle at that speed. If the speed is not satisfac- tory, tap the lever up for a faster speed, or tap it down for a slower speed. Each tap changes the set speed by 1.6 km/h (1.0 mph). You can now take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

RESETTING TO A SLOWER SPEED Push the lever down in the “− SET” direc- tion and hold it. Release the lever when the desired speed is attained. CRUISE CONTROL FAILURE WARNING If the cruise control indicator light flashes when using the cruise control, press the “ON−OFF” button to turn the system off and then press it again to turn it on. YOUR COMPACT DISC PLAYER WITH CHANGER (type 2) When you insert a disc, push the “LOAD” button and gently push the disc in with the label side up. This compact disc play- er can store up to six discs. The player will play from track 1 through to the end of the disc. Then it will play from track 1 of the next disc. The player is intended for use with 12 cm (4.7 in.) discs only.

Keep in mind that if you are listening to a stereo recording or broadcast, changing the right/left balance will increase the vol- ume of one group of sounds while de- creasing the volume of other. YOUR RADIO ANTENNA Your vehicle has an antenna printed on the inside of the rear window.

Error messages If the player malfunctions, your audio sys- tem will display following error messages. “WAIT”: The compact disc player unit may be too hot. Allow the player to cool down. “ERROR 1”: The disc may be dirty, dam- aged or (up−side down). Clean the disc and re−insert it. “NO DISC”: The compact disc changer of the separate unit is empty. Insert a disc. “ERROR 3”: There is a problem inside the system. “ERROR 4”: Over−current. Ask your Toyota dealer to inspect. “CD OPEN”: The compact disc changer lid of the separate unit is open. Close the compact disc changer lid. If “NO MUSIC” appears on the display, it indicates that a disc with no MP3/WMA data has been inserted.
