Cargo and luggage

Take notice of the following information about storage precau- tions, cargo capacity and load:

Capacity and distribution Cargo capacity depends on the total weight of the occupants. (Cargo capacity) = (Total load capacity) — (Total weight of occupants) Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit — (1) Locate the statement “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs.” on your vehicle’s placard.

(2) Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that

will be riding in your vehicle.

(3) Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from

XXX kg or XXX lbs.

(4) The resulting figure equals the available amount of cargo and lug-

gage load capacity. For example, if the “XXX” amount equals 1400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb passengers in your vehicle, the amount of available cargo and luggage load capacity is 650 lbs. (1400 − 750 (5 × 150) = 650 lbs.)

(5) Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in Step 4.

(6) If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle. (→P. 152) Toyota does not recommend towing a trailer with your vehicle. Your vehicle is not designed for trailer towing.

4-1. Before driving

Calculation formula for on your vehicle

Cargo capacity Total load capacity (vehicle capacity weight) (→P. 428)

When 2 people with the combined weight of A lb. (kg) are riding in your vehicle, which has a total load capacity (vehicle capacity weight) of B lb. (kg), the available amount of cargo and luggage load capacity will be C lb. (kg) as follows: B*2 lb. (kg) - A*1 lb. (kg) = C*3 lb. (kg) *1: A = Weight of people *2: B = Total load capacity *3: C = Available cargo and luggage load

In this condition, if 3 more passengers with the combined weight of D lb. (kg) get on, the available cargo and luggage load will be reduced E lb. (kg) as follows:

C lb. (kg) - D*4 lb. (kg) = E*5 lb. (kg) *4: D = Additional weight of people *5: E = Available cargo and luggage load As shown in the example above, if the number of occupants increases, the cargo and luggage load will be reduced by an amount that equals the increased weight due to the additional occupants. In other words, if an increase in the number of occupants causes an excess of the total load capacity (combined weight of occupants plus cargo and luggage load), you must reduce the cargo and luggage on your vehicle.

CAUTION

■Things that must not be carried in the trunk

The following things may cause a fire if loaded in the trunk: ●Receptacles containing gasoline ●Aerosol cans

■Storage precautions

Observe the following precautions. Failure to do so may prevent the pedals from being depressed properly, may block the driver’s vision, or may result in items hitting the driver or passengers, possibly causing an accident. ●Stow cargo and luggage in the trunk whenever possible. ●Do not place cargo or luggage in or on the following locations.

• At the feet of the driver • On the front passenger or rear seats (when stacking items) • On the package tray • On the instrument panel • On the dashboard

●Secure all items in the occupant compartment.

■Capacity and distribution

●Do not exceed the maximum axle weight rating or the total vehicle

weight rating.

●Even if the total load of occupant’s weight and the cargo load is less than the total load capacity, do not apply the load unevenly. Improper loading may cause deterioration of steering or braking control which may cause death or serious injury.

Changing shift ranges in S mode When the shift lever is in the S position, the shift lever or paddle shift switches can be operated as follows: (cid:88) Shift lever Upshifting Downshifting

(cid:88) Paddle shift switches (if equipped)

Upshifting Downshifting

The initial shift range in S mode is set automatically to “4” or “5” according to vehicle speed. However, the initial shift range may be set to “3” if AI-SHIFT has operated while the shift lever was in the D posi- tion. (→P. 164) ■ Shift ranges and their functions

● The vehicle is allowed to shift up and down to provide the most suitable gear selection based on your driving situation. (e.g. S4: 1 to 4 or, 4 to 1)

● You can choose from 6 levels of engine braking force.

A lower shift range will provide greater engine braking force than a higher shift range, and the engine speed will also increase.

● You can choose the gear range you want for different levels of

acceleration. (e.g. uphill, sporty driving, etc.)

AVALON (U)_(OM41440U)

4-2. Driving procedures

163

Selecting shift ranges in the D position (vehicles with paddle shift switches) To drive using temporary shift range selection, operate the “-” paddle shift switch. The shift range can then be selected by operating the “-” and “+” paddle shift switches. Changing the shift range allows restric- tion of the highest gear, preventing upshifting and enabling the level of engine braking force to be selected.

Upshifting Downshifting

The selected shift range, from “1” to “5”, or D will be displayed in the meter. To return to normal D position driving, the “+” paddle shift switch must be held down for a period of time. When a shift range higher than “5” is selected, the shift range will return to the normal D position. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the shift range will return to the normal D position.

AVALON (U)_(OM41440U)

4-2. Driving procedures

■S mode

●When the shift range is “4” or lower, holding the shift lever toward “+” sets

the shift range to “6”.

●To prevent the engine from over-revving, upshifting may automatically

occur.

●To protect the automatic transmission, a function is adopted that automati-

cally shifts to the top range when the temperature is too hot.

■AI-SHIFT

AI-SHIFT automatically selects the suitable gear according to driver input and the driving situation. AI-SHIFT automatically operates when the shift lever is in the D position. (Shifting the shift lever to the S position or paddle shifting cancels the func- tion.)

■When driving with cruise control or radar cruise control activated

When downshifting to 5 or 4 by shifting the shift lever to the S position or pad- dle shifting, cruise control or radar cruise control will not be canceled. (→P. 190, 194)

■If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P

→P. 414

■If the “S” indicator does not come on or the “D” indicator is displayed

even after shifting the shift lever to S This may indicate a malfunction in the automatic transmission system. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately. (In this situation, the transmission will operate in the same manner as when the shift lever is in D.)

■Downshift restriction warning buzzer (S mode or paddle shifting)

To help ensure safety and driving performance, downshifting operation may sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting may not be possible even when the shift lever or paddle shift switches are operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)

CAUTION

■When driving on slippery road surfaces

Be careful of downshifting and sudden acceleration, as this could result in the vehicle skidding to the side or spinning.

of raindrops. An optical sensor is adopted. It may not operate properly when sunlight from the rising or setting of the sun intermittently strikes the windshield, or if bugs etc. are present on the windshield.

●If the wiper is turned to AUTO mode while the engine switch is in IGNITION ON mode, the wipers will operate once to show that AUTO mode is acti- vated.

●If the temperature of the raindrop sensor is 194°F (90°C) or higher, or 14°F (-10°C) or lower, automatic operation may not occur. In this case, operate the wipers in any mode other than AUTO mode.

■If no windshield washer fluid sprays

Check that the washer nozzles are not blocked if there is washer fluid in the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

4-3. Operating the lights and wipers

CAUTION

■Caution regarding the use of windshield wipers in AUTO mode (vehi-

cles with rain-sensing windshield wipers) The windshield wipers may operate unexpectedly if the sensor is touched or the windshield is subject to vibration in AUTO mode. Take care that your fin- gers or anything else do not become caught in the windshield wipers.

■Caution regarding the use of washer fluid

When it is cold, do not use the washer fluid until the windshield becomes warm. The fluid may freeze on the windshield and cause low visibility. This may lead to an accident, resulting in death or serious injury.

NOTICE

■When the windshield is dry

Do not use the wipers, as they may damage the windshield.

■When there is no washer fluid spray from the nozzle

Damage to the washer fluid pump may be caused if the lever is pulled toward you and held continually.

■When a nozzle becomes blocked

In this case, contact your Toyota dealer. Do not try to clear it with a pin or other object. The nozzle will be damaged.

4-4. Refueling

CAUTION

■When refueling the vehicle

Observe the following precautions while refueling the vehicle. Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury. ●After exiting the vehicle and before opening the fuel door, touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity. It is important to discharge static electricity before refueling because sparks resulting from static electricity can cause fuel vapors to ignite while refueling.

●Always hold the grips on the fuel tank cap and turn it slowly to remove it. A whooshing sound may be heard when the fuel tank cap is loosened. Wait until the sound cannot be heard before fully removing the cap. In hot weather, pressurized fuel may spray out the filler neck and cause injury.

●Do not allow anyone that has not discharged static electricity from their

body to come close to an open fuel tank.

●Do not inhale vaporized fuel.

Fuel contains substances that are harmful if inhaled.

●Do not smoke while refueling the vehicle.

Doing so may cause the fuel to ignite and cause a fire.

●Do not return to the vehicle or touch any person or object that is statically

charged. This may cause static electricity to build up, resulting in a possible ignition hazard.

■When refueling

Observe the following precautions to prevent fuel overflowing from the fuel tank: ●Securely insert the fuel nozzle into the fuel filler neck. ●Stop filling the tank after the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off. ●Do not top off the fuel tank.

NOTICE

■Refueling

Do not spill fuel during refueling. Doing so may damage the vehicle, such as causing the emission control system to operate abnormally or damaging fuel system components or the vehicle’s painted surface.

199

Driving in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode This mode employs a radar sensor to detect the presence of vehicles up to approximately 400 ft. (120 m) ahead, determines the current vehicle-to-vehicle following distance, and operates to maintain a suit- able following distance from the vehicle ahead.

Note that vehicle-to-vehicle distance will close in when traveling on long downhill slopes.

Example of constant speed cruising When there are no vehicles ahead The vehicle travels at the speed set by the driver. The desired vehicle-to- vehicle distance can also be set by operating the vehicle-to-vehicle dis- tance control. Example of deceleration cruising When the vehicle ahead is driving slower than the set speed When a vehicle is detected running ahead of you, the system automatically decelerates your vehicle. When a greater reduction in vehicle speed is necessary, the system applies the brakes. A warning tone warns you when the system cannot decelerate sufficiently to prevent your vehicle from clos- ing in on the vehicle ahead.

AVALON (U)_(OM41440U)

200

4-5. Using the driving support systems

Example of follow-up cruising When following a vehicle driving slower than the set speed The system continues follow-up cruising while adjusting for changes in the speed of the vehicle ahead in order to maintain the vehicle-to-vehicle dis- tance set by the driver. Example of acceleration When there are no longer any vehicles ahead driving slower than the set speed The system accelerates until the set speed is reached. The system then returns to constant speed cruising.

Approach warning When your vehicle is too close to a vehicle ahead, and sufficient auto- matic deceleration via the cruise control is not possible, the display will flash and the buzzer will sound to alert the driver. An example of this would be if another driver cuts in front of you while you are follow- ing a vehicle. Apply the brakes to ensure an appropriate vehicle-to- vehicle distance. ■ Warnings may not occur when

In the following instances, there is a possibility that the warnings will not occur: ● When the speed of the vehicle ahead matches or exceeds your

vehicle speed

● When the vehicle ahead is traveling at an extremely slow speed ● Immediately after the cruise control speed was set ● At the instant the accelerator is applied
