You can easily align the front leg hooks with the rear strikers by using the floor bezel. Put the front legs of the seat short of the rear strikers as shown in the il- lustration. Then slide forward along the groove of the bezel until the front legs will reach the striker. Make sure the front legs align with the striker, swing up the seat.

NOTICE

When installing the seat, make sure to align the front leg hooks with the rearmost strikers of each pair in the floor. If you align the legs with the front strikers, the bezel in the floor will be damaged.

If you lock the rear legs before the front legs are not lock securely, disengage the rear leg lock by pulling the rear leg re- lease lever. Then reinstall the seat follow- ing the correct procedure.

INSTALLING THE SECOND CENTER SEAT IN THE FRONT AND CENTER POSITION The second center seat can be used in the forward position. To use the center second seat in the for- ward position, install according to the fol- lowing procedure.

SEATBACK ANGLE ADJUSTING STRAP Lean forward and pull the strap for- ward. Then lean back to the desired angle and release the strap.

D Avoid reclining

D Align both seatbacks at the same angle when a person sits in the third seat center position. Other- wise, the person cannot wear the seat belt properly and this may cause serious injuries in a collision. the seatback any more than needed. The seat belts provide maximum protection in a frontal or rear collision when the passengers are sitting up straight and well back in the seats. If you are reclined, the lap belt may slide past your hips and apply restraint forces directly to the abdomen or your neck may contact the shoulder belt. In the event of a frontal colli- sion, the more the seat is reclined, the greater the risk of death or per- sonal injury.

—Stowing third seats

BEFORE STOWING THIRD SEATS 1. Stow the third seat belt buckles as

shown in the illustration.

This prevents the belt buckles from falling out when you stow the third seat.

NOTICE

The seat belt buckles must be stowed before you stow the third seat.

2. To stow the center seat belt, pull it slightly out of its cover. It will auto- matically roll back partway. Roll the seat belt backwards as shown above and insert it into the slot of its cov- er. Make sure the tabs are securely locked in the cover.

For your safety and comfort, adjust the head restraint before driving. To raise: Pull it up. To lower: Push it down while pressing the lock release button. Third seats—When an occupant sits on the seat, always pull up the head restraint to the lock position. The head restraint is most effective when it is close to your head. Therefore, using a cushion on the seatback is not recom- mended.

To prevent the seat from overheating, do not use the seat heater with a blanket, cushion, or other insulating objects which cover the seat.

To turn on the seat heater, move the dial upward (“L” dial for the left front seat and “R” dial for the right front seat). At this time, the indicator light will illuminate to indicate the seat heat- er is operating. Move the dial upward or downward to ad- just to the desired temperature. To turn it off, move the dial downward until it stops. When the seat heater is not in use, move the dial fully downward. The key must be in the “ON” position to operate seat heaters.

According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. If a child must sit in the front seat, the seat belts should be worn properly. If an accident occurs and the seat belts are not worn properly, the force of the rapid infla- tion of the airbag may cause death or serious injury to the child.

D Keep the belts clean and dry.

If they need cleaning, use a mild soap solution or lukewarm water. Never use bleach, dye, or abrasive clean- ers—they may severely weaken the belts. (See “Cleaning the interior” on page 437 in Section 5.)

D Replace the belt assembly (includ- ing bolts) if it has been used in a severe impact. The entire assembly should be replaced even if damage is not obvious.

Adjust the seat as needed and sit up straight and well back in the seat. To fasten your belt, pull it out of the re- tractor and the buckle. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. The seat belt length automatically adjusts to your size and the seat position. The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It also may lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend, and you can move around freely.

If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor. When a passenger’s shoulder belt is com- pletely extended and retracted even slightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This fea- ture is used to hold the child restraint system securely. (For details, see “Child restraint” on page 121 in this Section.) To free the belt again, fully retract the belt and then pull the belt out once more.

CAUTION

Always make sure the shoulder belt is positioned across the center of your shoulder. The belt should be kept away from your neck, but not falling off your shoulder. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of protection in an accident and cause serious injuries in a collision.

Seat belts with an adjustable shoulder anchor— Adjust the shoulder anchor position to your size. To raise: Slide the anchor up. To lower: Push in the lock release button and slide the anchor down. After adjustment make sure the anchor is locked in position.

Seat belts for seats with outside arm- rests— Fasten your belt, ensuring that the shoul- der portion of the belt passes over the top of the outside armrest and that the lap portion of the belt passes under the out- side armrest as shown.

CAUTION

Always wear the belt with the shoul- der portion over the outside armrest and the lap portion under the outside armrest. Failure to do so may in- crease the chance of injury in an ac- cident.

The seat belt buckles of the second seats (7−passenger models) and third seats can be stowed when not in use. Seat belt buckles must be stowed before you fold the seat back. (See “—Tumbling second seats (outer seats)” on page 66, “—Removing second seats (outer seats)” on page 73 and “—Stowing third seats” on page 88 in this Section.)

STOWING THE CENTER SEAT BELT OF THE THIRD SEATS To stow the center seat belt of the third seats, pull the seat belt out of its cov- er. It will automatically roll back part- way. Roll the seat belt backward and insert it into the slot of its cover as shown above. Make sure the tabs are securely locked in the cover. Seat belt must be stowed before you fold the seatback. (See “—Stowing third seats” on page 88 in this Section.)

Stow the center seat belt of the third seats except when you are wearing it.

PULLING OUT THE CENTER SEAT BELT OF THE THIRD SEATS To use the center seat belt of the third seats, pull the tab (1) out, then pull the belt out a little and pull the tab (2) out from the cover. If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor.

To connect the extender to the seat belt, insert the tab into the seat belt buckle so that the “PRESS” signs on the buckle−release buttons of the ex- tender and the seat belt are both facing outward as shown. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. When releasing the seat belt, press on the buckle−release button on the extender, not on the seat belt. This helps prevent damage to the vehicle interior and extend- er itself. When not and store in the vehicle for future use.

The shoulder belt comfort guide for the outside third seats will provide added seat belt comfort for children who have outgrown child restraints and for small adults. When the shoulder belt is in- serted through the guide, the comfort guide pulls the belt away from the neck and head of an occupant. For wearing the seat belt, see “—Front and rear seat belts” on page 96 in this Section. Make sure the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder.

—Front seat belt pretensioners

CAUTION

Make sure the belt is not twisted and that it lies flat.

The driver and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioners are designed to be activated in response to a severe fron- tal impact. When the airbag sensor detects the shock of a severe frontal impact, the front seat belts are quickly drawn back in by the retractors so that the belts snugly restrain the front seat occupants. The front seat belt pretensioners are acti- vated even with no passenger in the front seat. The seat belt pretensioners and SRS air- bags may not operate together in case of collisions at certain speeds and angles.

This indicator comes on when the igni- tion key is turned to the “ON” position. It goes off after about 6 seconds. This means the front seat belt pretensioners are operating properly. This warning the airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sen- sors, side and curtain shield airbag sen- sors, curtain shield airbag sensors, driv- er’s seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front seat belt pretensioner assemblies, inflators, warning light, inter- connecting wiring and power sources. When the front seat belt pretensioners are activated, an operating noise may be heard and a small amount of smoke−like gas may be released. This gas is harm- less and does not indicate that a fire is occurring. Once front seat belt pretensioners the have been activated, the seat belt retrac- tors remain locked.

CAUTION

Do not modify, remove, strike or open the front seat belt pretensioner as- semblies, airbag sensor or surround- ing area or wiring. Doing so may cause sudden operation of the front seat belt pretensioners or disable the system, which could result in death or serious personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions can result in death or serious inju- ries. Consult your Toyota dealer about any repairs and modifications.

The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys- tem) front airbags are designed to pro- vide further protection for the driver and front passenger in addition to the primary safety protection provided by the seat belts. In response to a severe frontal impact, the SRS front airbags work together with the seat belts to help reduce injury by inflating. The SRS front airbags help to reduce injuries mainly to the driver’s or front passenger’s head or chest caused by directly hitting the steering wheel or dash- board. The front passenger airbag is acti- vated when no passenger is in the front seat. Be sure to wear your seat belt properly.

Your vehicle is equipped with a crash sensing and diagnostic module, which will record the use of the seat belt restraint system by the driver and front passenger when the SRS front airbags are inflated.

The driver or front passenger who is too close to the steering wheel or dashboard during airbag deployment can be killed or seriously injured. Toyota strongly recommends that: D The driver sit as far back as pos- sible from the steering wheel while still maintaining control of the ve- hicle.

The SRS front airbags are generally not designed to inflate if the vehicle is in- volved in a side or rear collision, if it rolls over, or if it is involved in a low− speed frontal collision. But, whenever a collision of any type causes sufficient forward deceleration of the vehicle, de- ployment of the SRS front airbags may occur.

The SRS front airbags may also deploy if a serious impact occurs to the under- side of your vehicle. Some examples are shown in the illustration.

The SRS front airbags are designed to deploy in severe (usually frontal) colli- sions where the magnitude and duration of the forward deceleration of the ve- hicle exceeds the designed threshold level. The SRS front airbags will deploy if the severity of the impact is above the de- signed threshold level, comparable to an approximate 25 km/h (15 mph) collision when the vehicle has the impact straight into a fixed barrier that does not move or deform. However, threshold velocity will be considerably higher if the vehicle strikes an object, such as a parked vehicle or sign pole, which can move or deform on impact, or if the vehicle is involved in an underride collision in which the front of the vehicle “underrides”, or goes under, the bed of a truck, etc.). The airbag sensors constantly monitor the forward deceleration of the vehicle. If an impact results in a forward deceleration beyond the designed threshold level, the system triggers the airbag inflators. At this time a chemical reaction in the inflators very quickly fills the airbags with non−tox- ic gas to help restrain the forward motion of the occupants. The airbags then quickly deflate, so that there is no obstruction of the driver’s vision should it be necessary to continue driving. When the airbags inflate, they produce a loud noise and release some smoke and residue along with non−toxic gas. This does not indicate a fire. This smoke may remain inside the vehicle for some time, and may cause some minor irritation to the eyes, skin or breathing. Be sure to wash off any residue as soon as possible to prevent any potential skin irritation with soap and water. If you can physically and safely exit the vehicle after a collision, you should do so at the first opportunity.

While the system is designed to reduce serious inju- ries, primarily to the head and chest, it may also cause other, less severe injuries to the face, chest, arms and hands. These are usually in the nature of minor burns or abrasions and swelling, but the force of a deploying airbag can cause more seri- ous if an occupant’s hands, arms, chest or head are in close proximity to the airbag module at the time of deployment.
