To ensure the system correctly detects an adult sitting in the front passenger seat, make sure the above do not occur. Make sure that the “ON” indicator is illu- minated when an adult is seated in the front passenger seat. If the “OFF” indica- tor is illuminated, ask the passenger to sit up straight, well back in the seat, and with the seat belt worn correctly. If the “OFF” illuminated, either ask the passenger to move to the rear seat, or if that is not possible, move the front passenger seat fully rearward.

CAUTION

To avoid potential death or serious injury when the front passenger occu- pant classification system does not detect the conditions correctly, ob- serve the following. (cid:1) Make sure the front passenger oc- cupant classification indicator light indicates “ON” when using the seat belt extender for the front passen- ger seat. If the indicator light indi- cates “OFF”, disconnect the extend- er tongue from the seat belt buckle, then reconnect the seat belt. Recon- nect the seat belt extender after making sure the indicator light indi- cates “ON”. If you use the seat belt extender while the light indicates “OFF”, the front passen- ger airbag and side airbag on the front passenger side may not acti- vate correctly, which could cause death or serious injury in the event of collision.

(cid:1) Do not recline the front passenger seatback so far that it touches a rear seat. This may cause the “OFF” indicator to be illuminated, which the passen- ger’s airbags will not deploy in the event of a severe accident. If the seatback touches the rear seat, re- turn to a position where it does not touches the rear seat. Keep the front passenger seatback as upright as possible when the ve- hicle is moving. Reclining the seat- back excessively may lessen the ef- fectiveness of the seat belt system. (cid:1) If an adult sits in the front passen- ger seat, the occupant classification indicator light should indicate “ON”. If the “OFF” indicator is illumina- ted, ask the passenger to sit up straight, well back in the seat, feet on the floor, and with the seat belt worn correctly. Child restraint— —Child restraint precautions Toyota strongly urges the use of ap- propriate child restraint systems for children. The laws of all 50 states in the U.S.A. and Canada now require the use of a child restraint system. Your vehicle conforms to SAEJ1819. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. See “Seat belts” on page 42 in this Section for details.

CAUTION

(cid:1) For effective protection in automo- bile accidents and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrained, using a seat belt or child restraint system depending on the age and size of the child. Holding a child in your arms is not a substitute for a child restraint system. In an acci- dent, the child can be crushed against the windshield, or between you and the vehicle’s interior.

(cid:1) Toyota strongly urges use of a proper child restraint system which conforms to the size of the child, installed on the rear seat. Accord- ing to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. (cid:1) Never install a rear- facing child re- straint system on the front passen- ger seat even if the front passenger occupant indicator light indicates “OFF”. In the event of an accident, the impact of the rapid inflation of the front passen- ger airbag could cause death or se- rious injury to the child if the rear- facing child is installed on front passenger seat.

To provide proper restraint, use a child restraint system following the manufactur- er’s instructions about the appropriate age and size of the child for the child restraint system. Install the child restraint system correctly following the instructions provided by its manufacturer. In order to activate the occupant classification system correctly, install the forward- facing child restraint system on the front passenger seat in the following order: 1. Turn the ignition key to the “ON” posi-

2. Move the front passenger seat to the

3. Put the child restraint system on the front passenger seat without putting your weight on front passenger seat.

1. Sit the child on a booster seat. Run the lap and shoulder belt through or around the booster seat and across the child following the instructions provided by its manufacturer and insert the tab into the buckle taking care not to twist the belt.

or CMVSS210.2 are installed in the rear seat. The anchorages are installed in the clear- ance between the seat cushion and seat- back of both outside rear seats. Child restraint systems complying with the FMVSS225 or CMVSS210.2 specification can be fixed to these anchorages. In this case, it is not necessary to fix the child restraint system with a seat belt on the vehicle.

Be careful when judging the size or dis- tance of any object seen in the outside rear view mirror on the passenger’s side because it is a convex mirror. Any object seen in a convex mirror will look smaller and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror.

TURN SIGNALS To signal a turn, push the headlight/ turn signal lever up or down to position 1. The key must be in the “ON” position. The lever automatically returns after you make a turn, but you may have to return it by hand after you change lanes. To signal a lane change, move the lever up or down to the pressure point (position 2) and hold it. If the turn signal indicator lights (green lights) on the instrument panel flash faster than normal, a front or rear turn signal bulb is burned out. See “Replacing light bulbs” on page 292 in Section 7−3. 96

To turn on the front fog lights, twist the band of the headlight and turn sig- nal switch lever. They will come on only when the headlights are on low beam.

INTERIOR LIGHTS To turn on the interior lights, turn the dial. The interior lights has the following posi- tions: Off—Turns the light off. On—Keeps the light on all the time. Door—Turns the light on when any of the side doors, back door or glass hatch is opened. The light goes off when all the side doors, back door and glass hatch are closed.

ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM When the dial is in the door position, the light comes on when any side door, back door or glass hatch is opened. After all the side doors, back door and glass hatch are closed, the light remains on for about 15 seconds before fading out. However, in the following cases, the light goes out immediately: D All the side doors, back door and glass hatch are closed when the ignition key is in the “ON” position.

D The ignition key is turned to the “ON” position after all the side doors, back door and glass hatch are closed.

D All the side doors and back door are locked when the glass hatch is closed and the light is still on.

When any side door and back door is unlocked using either the key or the wire- less remote control transmitter, the light will come on and remain on for 15 sec- onds before fading out. To prevent the battery being discharged, the light will automatically turn off when the key is removed and the door is left opened with the dial in the door position for 20 minutes or more.

In freezing weather, warm the windshield with the defroster before using the washer. This will help prevent fluid from freezing on your windshield, which can block your vision.

To defog or defrost the rear window, push the switch. The key must be in the “ON” position. The thin heater wires on the inside of the rear window will quickly clear the window surface. An indicator light will illuminate to indicate the defogger is operating. Push the switch once again to turn the defogger off. The system will automatically shut off af- ter the defogger have operated about 15
minutes. Make sure you turn the defogger off when the window is clear. Leaving the defogger on for a long time could cause the battery to discharge, especially during stop−and− go driving. The defogger is not designed for drying rain water or for melting snow.

Fuel gauge

Engine coolant temperature gauge

On inclines or curves, due to the move- ment of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge needle may fluctuate or the low fuel level warning light may come on earlier than usual. If the fuel tank is completely empty, the malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Fill the fuel tank immediately. The indicator lamp goes off after driving several times. If the indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. It is not a malfunction even if the needle of the fuel gauge returns to “E” when the ignition switch is turned to the “START” position.

Low fuel level warning light

The gauge the approximate quantity of fuel remaining in the tank when the ignition switch is on. Nearly full—Needle at “F” Nearly empty—Needle at “E” It is a good idea to keep the tank over 1/4 full. The needle moves when braking, acceler- ating or making turns. This is caused by the movement of the fuel in the tank. If the fuel level approaches “E” or the low fuel level warning light comes on, fill the fuel tank as soon as possible.

The gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature when the ignition switch is on. The engine operating temperature will vary with changes in weather and engine load. If the needle moves into the red zone, your engine is too hot. If your vehicle overheats, stop your vehicle and allow the engine to cool.

Your vehicle may overheat during severe operating conditions, such as: D Driving up a long hill on a hot day. D Reducing speed or stopping after high

speed driving.

D Idling for a long period with the air conditioning on in stop−and−go traffic.

D Towing a trailer. It is not a malfunction even if the needle of the engine coolant temperature gauge returns to “C” when the ignition switch is turned to the “START” position.

NOTICE

z Do not remove the thermostat

in the engine cooling system as this may cause the engine to overheat. The thermostat is designed to con- trol the flow of coolant to keep the temperature of the engine within the specified operating range.

Tachometer

NOTICE

Do not let the indicator needle get into the red zone. This may cause severe engine damage.

The tachometer indicates engine speed in thousands of rpm (revolutions per minute). Use it while driving to select correct shift points and to prevent en- gine lugging and over−revving. Driving with the engine running too fast causes excessive engine wear and poor fuel economy. Remember, in most cases the slower the engine speed, the greater the fuel economy. 2ZZ−GE engine only—The engine will not exceed 7100 rpm before it warms up. It is not a malfunction even if the needle of the tachometer returns to the bottom position when the ignition switch is turned to the “START” position.

The meter display changes in the order from the odometer to trip meter A to trip meter then back B, the odometer each time you push. To reset the trip meter A to zero, dis- play the meter A reading, then push and hold the knob until the meter is set to zero. The same process can be applied for resetting the trip meter B.
