HEAD RESTRAINTS

WARNING

Head restraints supplement the other vehicle safety systems. They may pro- vide additional protection against injury in certain rear end collisions. Adjust the head restraints properly, as specified in this section. Check the adjustment after someone else uses the seat. Do not attach anything to the head restraint stalks or remove the head restraint. Do not use the seat if the head restraint has been removed. If the head restraint was removed, reinstall and properly adjust the head restraint before an occupant uses the seating position. Failure to follow these instructions can reduce the effectiveness of the head restraints. This may increase the risk of serious injury or death in a collision.

the head restraint before an occupant uses the seating position.

1-10 Safety — Seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system

Front-seat Active Head Restraint The Active Head Restraint moves forward utilizing the force that the seatback receives from the occupant in a rear-end collision. The movement of the head restraint helps support the occupant’s head by reducing its backward movement and helping absorb some of the forces that may lead to whiplash-type injuries.

Active Head Restraints are effective for colli- sions at low to medium speeds in which it is said that whiplash injury occurs most.

Active Head Restraints operate only in certain rear-end collisions. After the collision, the head restraints return to their original position.

ADJUSTABLE HEADRESTS

WARNING

The adjustable headrests supplement the other vehicle safety systems. They may provide additional protection against injury in certain rear end colli- sions. Adjust the headrests properly, as specified in this section. Check the adjustment after someone else uses the seat. Do not attach anything to the adjustable headrest stalks or remove the adjustable headrests. Do not use the seat if the adjustable headrests have been removed. If the headrest was removed, reinstall and properly adjust the headrest before an occupant uses the seating position. Failure to follow these instructions can reduce the effectiveness of the adjustable head- rests. This may increase the risk of serious injury or death in a collision.

If the head restraints are removed for any reason, they should be securely stored to prevent them from causing injury to passengers or damage to the vehicle in case of sudden braking or an accident.

. When returning the seatbacks to the upright position, be certain they are completely secured in the latched position. If they are not completely secured, passengers may be injured in an accident or sudden stop.

. Properly secure all cargo to help prevent it from sliding or shifting. Do not place cargo higher than the seatbacks. In a sudden stop or collision, unsecured cargo could cause personal injury.

FLEXIBLE SEATING

WARNING

. Never allow anyone to ride in the cargo area or on the rear seats when they are in the fold-down position. In a collision, people riding in these areas without proper re- straints are more likely to be ser- iously injured or killed.

. Do not allow people to ride in any area of your vehicle that is not equipped with seats and seat belts. Be sure everyone in your vehicle is in a seat and using a seat belt properly.

. Do not fold down the rear seats when occupants are in the rear seat area or any cargo is on the rear seats.

. Head restraints and headrests should be adjusted properly as they may provide significant protection against injury in an accident. Always replace and adjust them properly if they have been removed for any reason.

WARNING

. Every person who drives or rides in this vehicle should use a seat belt at all times. Children should be prop- erly restrained in the rear seat and, if appropriate, in a child restraint.

The seat belt should be properly adjusted to a snug fit. Failure to do so may reduce the effectiveness of the entire restraint system and in- crease the chance or severity of injury in an accident. Serious injury or death can occur if the seat belt is not worn properly.

. Always route the shoulder belt over your shoulder and across your chest. Never put the belt behind your back, under your arm or across your neck. The belt should be away from your face and neck, but not falling off your shoulder.

. Position the lap belt as low and snug as possible AROUND THE HIPS, NOT THE WAIST. A lap belt worn too high could increase the risk of internal injuries in an acci- dent.

. Do not wear the seat belt inside out or twisted. Doing so may reduce its effectiveness.

. Do not allow more than one person

to use the same seat belt.

. Never carry more people in the

vehicle than there are seat belts.

If the seat belt warning light glows continuously while the ignition is turned ON with all doors closed and all seat belts fastened, it may in- dicate a malfunction in the system. Have the system checked by a NISSAN dealer.

. No changes should be made to the seat belt system. For example, do not modify the seat belt, add mate- rial or install devices that may change the seat belt routing or tension. Doing so may affect the operation of the seat belt system. Modifying or tampering with the seat belt system may result in serious personal injury.

. Once a seat belt pretensioner has

activated, it cannot be reused and must be replaced together with the retractor. See a NISSAN dealer. . Removal and installation of

the pretensioner seat belt system com- ponents should be done by a NISSAN dealer.

. All seat belt assemblies, including retractors and attaching hardware, should be inspected after any colli- sion by a NISSAN dealer. NISSAN recommends that all seat belt as- semblies in use during a collision be replaced unless the collision was minor and the belts show no da- mage and continue to operate prop- erly.

Seat belt assemblies not in use during a collision should also be inspected and replaced if either damage or improper operation is noted.

CHILD SAFETY

Children need adults to help protect them.

They need to be properly restrained.

In addition to the general information in this manual, child safety information is available from many other sources, including doctors, teachers, government traffic safety offices, and community organizations. Every child is different, so be sure to learn the best way to transport your child.

There are three basic types of child restraint systems: . Rear-facing child restraint . Booster seat

Forward-facing child restraint

The proper restraint depends on the child’s size. Generally, infants up to about 1 year and less than 20 lbs (9 kg) should be placed in rear- facing child restraints. Forward-facing child restraints are available for children who outgrow rear-facing child restraints and are at least 1
year old. Booster seats are used to help position a vehicle lap/shoulder belt on a child who can no longer use a forward-facing child restraint.

WARNING

Infants and children need special pro- tection. The vehicle’s seat belts may not fit them properly. The shoulder belt may

come too close to the face or neck. The lap belt may not fit over their small hip bones. In an accident, an improperly fitting seat belt could cause serious or fatal injury. Always use appropriate child restraints.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories require the use of approved child restraints for infants and small children. See “CHILD RESTRAINTS” later in this section.

A child restraint may be secured in the vehicle by using either the LATCH (Lower Anchor and Tethers for CHildren) system or with the vehicle seat belt. See “CHILD RESTRAINTS” later in this section for more information.

NISSAN recommends that all pre-teens and children be restrained in the rear seat. Studies show that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat.

This is especially important because your vehicle has a supplemental restraint sys- tem (Air bag system) for the front passen- ger. See “SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM” later in this section.

INFANTS Infants up to at least 1 year old should be placed in a rear-facing child restraint. NISSAN recom- mends that infants be placed in child restraints that comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. You should choose a child restraint that fits your vehicle and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

limit of

SMALL CHILDREN Children that are over 1 year old and weigh at least 20 lbs (9 kg) should remain in a rear-facing child restraint as long as possible up to the height or weight the child restraint. Forward-facing child restraints are available for children who outgrow rear facing child restraints and are at to the manufacturer’s instructions for minimum and maximum weight and height recommendations. NISSAN recommends that small children be placed in child restraints that comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. SSS0099

LARGER CHILDREN Children who are too large for child restraints should be seated and restrained by the seat belts which are provided. The seat belt may not fit properly if the child is less than 4 ft 9 in (142.5
cm) tall and weighs between 40 lbs (18 kg) and 80 lbs (36 kg). A booster seat should be used to obtain proper seat belt fit.

WARNING

Never let a child stand or kneel on any seat and do not allow a child in the cargo area. The child could be seriously injured or killed in a sudden stop or collision.

if

the shoulder belt

NISSAN recommends that a child be placed in a commercially available booster seat the shoulder belt fits close to the face or neck or if the lap portion of the seat belt goes across the abdomen. The booster seat should raise the child so that is properly positioned across the top, middle portion of the shoulder and the lap belt is low on the hips. A booster seat can only be used in seating positions that have a three-point type seat belt. The booster seat should fit the vehicle seat and have a label certifying that it complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Once the child has grown so the shoulder belt is no longer on or near the face and neck, use the shoulder belt without the booster seat.

PRECAUTIONS ON CHILD RESTRAINTS

WARNING

. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions for proper use and in- stallation of child restraints could result in serious injury or death of a child or other passengers in a sudden stop or collision:

— The child restraint must be used and installed properly. Always follow all of the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

— Infants and children should never be held on anyone’s lap. Even the strongest adult cannot resist the forces of a collision.

— Do not put a seat belt around both a child and another pas- senger.

— NISSAN recommends that all child restraints be installed in the rear seat. Studies show that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. If you must

install a forward-facing child restraint in the front seat, see “FORWARD-FACING CHILD RE- STRAINT INSTALLATION USING THE SEAT BELTS” later in this section.

— Even with the NISSAN Advanced Air Bag System, never install a rear-facing child restraint in the front seat. An inflating air bag could seriously injure or kill a child. A rear-facing child re- straint must only be used in the rear seat.

— Be sure to purchase a child restraint that will fit the child and vehicle. Some child re- straints may not fit properly in your vehicle.

— Child restraint anchor points are designed to withstand loads from child restraints that are properly fitted.

— Never use the anchor points for

adult seat belts or harnesses.

— A child restraint with a top tether strap should not be used in the front passenger seat.

— Keep seatbacks as upright as

possible after fitting the child restraint.

— Infants and children should al- ways be placed in an appropri- ate child restraint while in the vehicle.

. When the child restraint is not in use, keep it secured with the LATCH system or a seat belt. In a sudden stop or collision, loose objects can injure occupants or damage the vehicle.

CAUTION

A child restraint in a closed vehicle can become very hot. Check the seating surface and buckles before placing a child in the child restraint.

This vehicle is equipped with a universal child restraint anchor system, referred to as the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHil- dren) system. Some child restraints include rigid or webbing-mounted attachments that can be connected to these anchors.

For details, see “Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren System (LATCH)” later in this section.

Model "E52-D" EDITED: 2010/ 10/ 25

If you do not have a LATCH compatible child restraint, the vehicle seat belts can be used.

Several manufacturers offer child restraints for infants and small children of various sizes. When selecting any child restraint, keep the following points in mind: . Choose only a restraint with a label certifying that it complies with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213 or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213.

. Check the child restraint in your vehicle to be sure it is compatible with the vehicle’s seat and seat belt system.

If the child restraint is compatible with your vehicle, place your child in the child restraint and check the various adjustments to be sure the child restraint is compatible with your child. Choose a child restraint that is designed for your child’s height and weight. Always follow all recommended procedures.

All U.S. states and Canadian provinces or territories require that infants and small children be restrained in an approved child restraint at all times while the vehicle is being operated. Canadian law requires the top tether strap on forward-facing child restraints be secured to the designated anchor point on the vehicle.

SSS1166

Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren System (LATCH) Your vehicle is equipped with special anchor points that are used with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system compatible child restraints.
