Vehicle jack

Warning!

The vehicle jack is located underneath the storage compartment floor.

The jack is designed exclusively for jacking up the vehicle at the jack take-up brackets built into both sides of the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury, use the jack only to lift the vehicle during a wheel change. Never get beneath the vehicle while it is supported by the jack. Keep hands and feet away from the area under the lifted vehicle. Always firmly set parking brake and block wheels before raising vehicle with jack.

Do not disengage parking brake while the vehicle is raised. Be certain that the jack is always vertical (plumb line) when in use, especially on hills. Always try to use the jack on level surface. Make sure the jack arm is fully seated in the jack take-up bracket. Always lower the vehicle onto sufficient ca- pacity jackstands before working under the vehicle.

Spare wheel

Your vehicle is equipped with a spare wheel with collapsible tire. The spare wheel is located underneath the cargo compartment floor.

Warning!

The dimensions of the spare wheel are dif- ferent from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a spare wheel mounted.

The spare wheel should only be used tempo- rarily, and should be replaced with a regular road wheel as quickly as possible.

If you cannot unlock the vehicle with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO*, open the driv- er’s door using the mechanical key.

Unlocking the driver’s door with the mechanical key will trigger the anti-theft alarm system. To cancel the alarm: 앫 Press button Œ or ‹ on the

SmartKey.

앫 Insert the SmartKey in the starter

switch.

The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO must be within 3 ft (1 m) of the ve- hicle.

If you cannot lock the vehicle with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO*, lock the vehi- cle carrying out the following steps. 왘 Close the front passenger door, the

rear right door and the tailgate.

왘 Open the driver’s door and the rear left

door.

왘 Press the central locking switch on the

driver’s door (컄 page 131). The locking knobs of the front passen- ger door and the rear doors move down. If the vehicle battery is disconnected or drained: 왘 Press down the locking knobs of the front passenger door and the rear doors manually.

Power tilt/sliding sunroof*

You can open or close the tilt/sliding sunroof manually should an electrical malfunction occur. The tilt/sliding sunroof drive is located behind a cover on the overhead control panel.

Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*: 왘 Turn off the engine by pressing the

KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (컄 page 66).

왘 Open the driver’s door (this puts the starter switch to position 0, same as with the SmartKey re- moved from starter switch). The driver’s door can then be closed again.

왔 Replacing SmartKey batteries If the batteries in the SmartKey or the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* are dis- charged, the vehicle can no longer be locked or unlocked. It is recommended to have the batteries replaced at an autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Warning!

Keep the batteries out of reach of children.

If a battery is swallowed, seek medical help immediately.

Batteries contain materials that can harm the environment if disposed of improperly. Recycling of batteries is the preferred method of disposal. Many states require sellers of batteries to accept old batteries for recycling.

왔 Replacing bulbs Bulbs

Safe vehicle operation depends on proper exterior lighting and signaling. It is there- fore essential that all bulbs and lamp as- semblies are in good working order at all times. Correct headlamp adjustment is extremely important. Have headlamps checked and readjusted at regular intervals and when a bulb has been replaced. See an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center for headlamp adjustment.

If the headlamps or front fog lamps are fogged up on the inside as a result of high humidity, driving the vehicle a dis- tance with the lights on should clear up the fogging.

Never open the hood when the wiper arms are folded forward. Hold on to the wiper when folding the wiper arm back. If released, the force of the impact from the tensioning spring could crack the windshield. Do not allow the wiper arms to contact the windshield glass without a wiper blade inserted. Make sure the wiper blades are proper- ly installed. Improperly installed wiper blades may cause windshield damage. For your convenience, we recommend that you have this work carried out by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Warning!

The dimensions of the spare wheel are dif- ferent from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a spare wheel mounted. Adapt your driving style accord- ingly.

The spare wheel is for temporary use only. When driving with spare wheel mounted, ensure proper tire inflation pressure and do not exceed a vehicle speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).

Drive to the nearest Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center as soon as possible to have the spare wheel replaced with a regular road wheel.

Never operate the vehicle with more than one spare wheel mounted. Do not switch off the ESP® with a spare wheel mounted.

Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*: 왘 Turn off the engine by pressing the

KEYLESS-GO* button once (컄 page 66).

왘 Open the driver’s door (this puts the starter switch in position 0, same as with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch). The driver’s door then can be closed again.

왘 Have any passenger exit the vehicle at

a safe distance from the roadway.

Open doors only when conditions are safe to do so.

Mounting the spare wheel

Preparing the vehicle 왘 Prepare the vehicle as described

(컄 page 478).

왘 Take the wheel wrench and the vehicle

jack from the vehicle tool kit (컄 page 455).

왘 Take the spare wheel from the wheel

well under the cargo compartment floor (컄 page 458).

Practical hints Flat tire

Lifting the vehicle 왘 Prevent the vehicle from rolling away by blocking wheels with wheel chocks or other sizable objects. One wheel chock is included with the vehicle tool kit (컄 page 455).

When changing wheel on a level surface: 왘 Place the wheel chock in front of and

another sizable object behind the wheel that is diagonally opposite to the wheel being changed.

Always try lifting the vehicle using the jack on a level surface. However, should cir- cumstances require you to do so on a hill, place the wheel chock and another sizable object as follows: 왘 Place the wheel chock and another sizable object on the downhill side blocking both wheels of the axle not being worked on.

Warning!

The jack is designed exclusively for jacking up the vehicle at the jack take-up brackets built into both sides of the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury, use the jack only to lift the vehicle during a wheel change. Never get beneath the vehicle while it is supported by the jack. Keep hands and feet away from the area under the lifted vehicle. Always firmly set parking brake and block wheels before raising vehicle with jack.

Do not disengage parking brake while the vehicle is raised. Be certain that the jack is always vertical (plumb line) when in use, especially on hills. Always try to use the jack on level surface. Make sure the jack arm is fully seated in the jack take-up bracket. Always lower the vehicle onto sufficient capacity jackstands before working under the vehicle.

1 Wheel wrench 왘 On wheel to be changed, loosen but do

not yet remove the wheel bolts (approximately one full turn with wheel wrench 1).

The jack take-up brackets are located di- rectly behind the front wheel housings and in front of the rear wheel housings.

Do not position the jack on the body of the vehicle, as this may cause damage to the vehicle.

bracket 2 so that it is always vertical (plumb-line) as seen from the side, even if the vehicle is parked on an in- cline.

왘 Continue to turn crank 4 until the wheel is a maximum of 1.2 in (3 cm) from the ground.

Warning!

The jack is intended only for lifting the vehicle briefly for wheel changes. It is not suited for performing maintenance work under the vehicle. 앫 Never start the engine when the vehicle

is raised.

앫 Never lie down under the raised vehicle.

Removing the wheel

1 Alignment bolt 왘 Unscrew upper-most wheel bolt and

remove.

왘 Replace this wheel bolt with alignment bolt 1 supplied in the vehicle tool kit (컄 page 454).

왘 Remove the remaining wheel bolts.

Do not place wheel bolts in sand or dirt. This could result in damage to the bolts and wheel hub threads.

1 Wheel bolt for 18" and 19" light alloy

wheels

2 Wheel bolt for 17" light alloy wheels or

collapsible tire (located in trunk with spare wheel)

Wheel bolts 2 must be used when mounting the spare wheel with collaps- ible tire. The use of any wheel bolts oth- er than wheel bolts 2 for the spare wheel with collapsible tire will physical- ly damage the vehicle’s brakes.

왘 Remove the wheel.

Warning!

Only use genuine equipment Mercedes-Benz wheel bolts. Other wheel bolts may come loose.

Do not tighten the wheel bolts when the vehicle is raised. Otherwise the vehicle could fall off the jack.

왘 Guide spare wheel onto the alignment

bolt and push it on.

왘 Insert wheel bolts and tighten them

slightly.

왘 Unscrew the alignment bolt, install last

wheel bolt and tighten slightly.

Practical hints Flat tire

왘 Clean contact surfaces of wheel and

wheel hub.

To avoid paint damage, place wheel flat against hub and hold it there while installing first wheel bolt.

Warning!

Always replace wheel bolts that are damaged or rusted.

Never apply oil or grease to wheel bolts.

Damaged wheel hub threads should be repaired immediately. Do not continue to drive under these circumstances! Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center or call Roadside Assistance.

Incorrect wheel bolts or improperly tight- ened wheel bolts can cause the wheel to come off. This could cause an accident. Make sure to use the correct wheel bolts.

Inflating the collapsible tire

Warning!

Inflate collapsible tire only after the wheel is properly mounted.

Inflate the collapsible tire using the electric air pump (컄 page 454) before lowering the vehicle.

Warning!

Observe instructions on air pump label.

Do not lower the vehicle before inflat- ing the collapsible tire. Otherwise the rim may be damaged.

Air hose 4 and union nut 5 can become hot during inflation. Exercise proper caution to avoid burning yourself when using the equipment.

Please compare the recommended tire inflation pressure for your vehicle with the tire inflation pressure on the yellow label located on the spare wheel rim. If the tire inflation pressure on the yel- low label on the spare wheel rim differs from the values given in this Operator’s Manual, inflate the tire to the recom- mended tire inflation pressure given on the yellow label on the spare wheel rim.

Do not operate the electric air pump longer than 8 minutes without interrup- tion. Otherwise it may overheat. You may operate the electric air pump again after it has cooled off.

Lowering the vehicle

Warning!

Inflate collapsible tire only after the wheel is properly mounted.

Inflate the collapsible tire using the electric air pump (컄 page 483) before lowering the vehicle.

왘 Lower vehicle by turning crank coun-

terclockwise until vehicle is resting ful- ly on its own weight.

왘 Remove the jack.

Follow recommend tire inflation pressures.

Do not overinflate tires. Overinflating tires can result in sudden deflation (blowout) be- cause they are more likely to become punc- tured or damaged by road debris, potholes, etc.

Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated.

왘 Detach the electric air pump. 왘 Store the electrical plug and the air hose behind the flap and place the electric air pump back in the vehicle tool kit storage well.

1-5 Wheel bolts

Practical hints Flat tire

6 Wheel wrench 왘 Tighten the five wheel bolts evenly, fol- lowing the diagonal sequence illustrat- ed (1 to 5), until all bolts are tight. Observe a tightening torque of 110 lb-ft (150 Nm).

Warning!

Have the tightening torque checked after changing a wheel. The wheels could come loose if they are not tightened to a torque of 110 lb-ft (150 Nm).
