CAUTION

(cid:129) You should drive carefully when the compact spare is in use. The compact spare should be replaced by the proper conventional tire and rim at the first opportunity.

(cid:129) The operation of this vehicle is not recommended with more than one compact spare tire in use at the same time.

WARNING

The compact spare tire is for emergency use only. Do not operate your vehicle on this compact spare at speeds over 50 mph (80 km/h). The original tire should be repaired or replaced as soon as is possible to avoid failure of the spare possibly leading to personal injury or death.

The compact spare should be inflat- ed to 60 psi (420 kPa).

✽✽ NOTICE Check the inflation pressure after installing the spare tire. Adjust it to the specified pressure, as necessary.

18

When using a compact spare tire, observe the following precautions: (cid:129) Under no circumstances should you exceed 50 mph (80 km/h); a higher speed could damage the tire.

(cid:129) Ensure that you drive slowly enough for the road conditions to avoid all hazards. Any road hazard, such as a pothole or debris, could seriously damage the compact spare.

(cid:129) Any continuous road use of this tire could result in tire failure, loss of vehicle control, and possible per- sonal injury.

(cid:129) Do not exceed the vehicle’s maxi- mum load rating or the load-carry- ing capacity shown on the sidewall of the compact spare tire.

(cid:129) Avoid driving over obstacles. The compact spare tire diameter is smaller than the diameter of a con- ventional tire and reduces the ground clearance approximately 1
inch (25 mm), which could result in damage to the vehicle.

(cid:129) Do not take this vehicle through an automatic car wash while the com- pact spare tire is installed.

(cid:129) Do not use tire chains on the com- pact spare tire. Because of the small- er size, a tire chain will not fit proper- ly. This could damage the vehicle and result in loss of the chain.

(cid:129) Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle because this tire has been designed especially for your vehicle.

(cid:129) The compact spare tire’s tread life is shorter than a regular tire. Inspect your compact spare tire regularly and replace worn compact spare tires with the same size and design, mounted on the same wheel.

(cid:129) The compact spare tire should not be used on any other wheels, nor should standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the compact spare wheel. If such use is attempted, damage to these items or other car compo- nents may occur.

(cid:129) Do not use more than one compact

spare tire at a time.

(cid:129) Do not tow a trailer while the com-

pact spare tire is installed.

IF YOU HAVE A FLAT TIRE (WITH TIRE MOBILITY KIT, IF EQUIPPED)

Air pressure loss in the tire may adversely affect tire performance. For this reason, you should avoid abrupt steering or other driving maneuvers, especially if the vehicle is heavily loaded or if a trailer is in use. The Tire Mobility Kit is not designed or intended as a permanent tire repair method and is to be used for one tire only. This instruction shows you step by step how to temporarily seal the puncture simply and reliably. Read the section "Notes on the safe use of the Tire Mobility Kit".

WARNING

(cid:129) Do not use the Tire Mobility Kit if a tire is severely dam- aged by driving while flat or with insufficient air pressure. (cid:129) Only punctured areas located within the tread region of the tire can be sealed using the Tire Mobility Kit.

(cid:129) Damage to the sidewall must not be repaired due to safety reasons.

OYN069010
Please read the instructions before using the Tire Mobility Kit. (1) Compressor (2) Sealant bottle

WARNING

For safe operation, carefully read and follow the instructions in this manual before use.

OYN069018

Introduction With the Tire Mobility Kit you stay mobile even after experiencing a tire puncture. The system of compressor and seal- ing compound effectively and com- fortably seals most punctures in a passenger car tire caused by nails or similar objects and reinflates the tire. After you ensured that the tire is properly sealed you can drive cau- tiously on the tire (up to 120 miles (200 km)) at a max. speed of 50 mph (80 km/h) in order to reach a vehicle or tire dealer to have the tire replaced. It is possible that some tires, especially with larger punctures or damage to the sidewall, cannot be sealed completely.

20

(cid:129) Provided the car is outdoors, leave the engine running. Otherwise operating the compressor may eventually drain the car battery.

(cid:129) Never leave the Tire Mobility Kit unattended while it is being used. (cid:129) Do not leave the compressor run- ning for more than 10 min. at a time or it may overheat.

(cid:129) Do not use the Tire Mobility Kit if the ambient temperature is below -22°F (-30°C).

(cid:129) Do not use the sealing compound after its expiration date which can be found on the label of the bottle.

(cid:129) Keep away from children.

Notes on the safe use of the Tire Mobility Kit (cid:129) Park your car at the side of the road so that you can work with the Tire Mobility Kit away from moving traffic. Place your warning triangle in a prominent place to make pass- ing vehicles aware of your location. (cid:129) To be sure your vehicle will not move, even when you're on fairly level ground, always set your park- ing brake.

(cid:129) Only use the Tire Mobility Kit for sealing/inflation passenger car tires. Do not use on motorcycles, bicycles or any other type of tires. (cid:129) Do not remove any foreign objects such as nails or screws that have penetrated the tire.

(cid:129) Before using the Tire Mobility Kit, read the precautionary advice printed on the sealant bottle!

What to do in an emergency

CAUTION

The Tire Mobility Kit is a tempo- rary fix to the tire and the tire should be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

(cid:129) Have your tire repaired as soon as possible. The tire may loose air pressure at any time after inflating with the TMK.

CAUTION

When using Tire Mobility Kit,the tire sealant can damage the tire pressure sensor. After using the Tire Mobility Kit, have the tire pressure sensor checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

If towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporar- ily towed using a cable or chain secured to the emergency towing hook attached to the front (or under the rear) of the vehicle.

6 27

What to do in an emergency

Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle. A driver must be in the vehicle to steer it and operate the brakes. Towing in this manner may be done only on hard-surfaced roads for a short dis- tance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, power train, steering and brakes must all be in good condition. (cid:129) Do not use the tow hooks to pull a vehi- cle out of mud, sand or other condi- tions from which the vehicle cannot be driven out under its own power.

(cid:129) Avoid towing a vehicle heavier than the

vehicle doing the towing.

(cid:129) The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other frequent- ly.

CAUTION

(cid:129) Attach a towing strap to the tow

hook.

(cid:129) Using a portion of the vehicle other than the tow hooks for tow- ing may damage the body of your vehicle.

(cid:129) Use only a cable or chain specifi- cally intended for use in towing vehicles. Securely fasten the cable or chain to the towing hook provided.

(cid:129) Before emergency towing, check that

the hook is not broken or damaged.

(cid:129) Fasten the towing cable or chain

securely to the hook.

(cid:129) Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady and

even force.

(cid:129) To avoid damaging the hook, do not pull from the side or at a vertical angle. Always pull straight ahead.

WARNING

Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle. (cid:129) Avoid sudden starts or erratic driving maneuvers which would place excessive stress on the emergency towing hook and tow- ing cable or chain. The hook and towing cable or chain may break and cause serious injury or dam- age.

(cid:129) If the disabled vehicle cannot be moved, do not forcibly continue the towing. Contact an authorized Hyundai dealer or a commercial tow truck service for assistance. (cid:129) Tow the vehicle as straight ahead

Maintenance

EXPLANATION OF SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ITEMS Engine oil and filter The engine oil and filter should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. If the car is being driven in severe conditions, more fre- quent oil and filter changes are required.

Fuel filter A clogged filter can limit the speed at which the vehicle may be driven, damage the emission system and cause multiple issues such as hard starting. If an exces- sive amount of foreign matter accumu- lates in the fuel tank, the filter may require replacement more frequently. After installing a new filter, run the engine for several minutes, and check for leaks at the connections. Fuel filters should be installed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

Fuel lines, fuel hoses and con- nections Check the fuel lines, fuel hoses and con- nections for leakage and damage. Have an authorized HYUNDAI dealer replace any damaged or leaking parts immedi- ately.

Vapor hose and fuel filler cap The vapor hose and fuel filler cap should be inspected at those intervals specified in the maintenance schedule. Make sure that a new vapor hose or fuel filler cap is correctly replaced.

Vacuum crankcase ventilation hoses Inspect the surface of hoses for evidence of heat and/or mechanical damage. Hard and brittle rubber, cracking, tears, cuts, abrasions, and excessive swelling indi- cate deterioration. Particular attention should be paid to examine those hose surfaces nearest to high heat sources, such as the exhaust manifold. Inspect the hose routing to assure that the hoses do not come in contact with any heat source, sharp edges or moving component which might cause heat dam- age or mechanical wear. Inspect all hose connections, such as clamps and cou- plings, to make sure they are secure, and that no leaks are present. Hoses should be replaced immediately if there is any evidence of deterioration or damage.

Drive belts Inspect all drive belts for evidence of cuts, cracks, excessive wear or oil satu- ration and replace if necessary. Drive belts should be checked periodically for proper tension and adjusted as neces- sary.

18

Air cleaner filter A Genuine HYUNDAI air cleaner filter is recommended when is replaced.

Spark plugs Make sure to install new spark plugs of the correct heat range.

Cooling system Check cooling system components, such as radiator, coolant reservoir, hoses and connections for leakage and damage. Replace any damaged parts.

Coolant The coolant should be changed at the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule.

Automatic transaxle fluid (if equipped) Automatic transaxle fluid should not be checked under normal usage conditions. But in severe conditions, the fluid should be changed at an authorized HYUNDAI dealer in accordance to the scheduled maintenance at the beginning of this chapter.

✽✽ NOTICE Automatic transaxle fluid color is basi- cally red. As the vehicle is driven, the automatic transaxle fluid will begin to look darker. It is normal condition and you should not judge the need to replace the fluid based upon the changed color.

CAUTION

The use of a non-specified fluid could result in transaxle malfunc- tion and failure. Use only specified automatic transaxle to “Recommended lubricants and capacities”in section 8.)

CALIFORNIA PROPOSI- TION 65 WARNING

Engine oil contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and reproductive harm. Used engine oil may cause irrita- tion or cancer of the skin if left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods of time. Used engine oil contains chemicals that have caused cancer in laboratory ani- mals. Always protect your skin by washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water as soon as possible after handling used oil.

Changing the engine oil and filter Have engine oil and filter changed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer according to the Maintenance Schedule at the begin- ning of this section.

22

ENGINE COOLANT The high-pressure cooling system has a reservoir filled with year-round antifreeze coolant. The reservoir is filled at the factory. Check the antifreeze protection and coolant level at least once a year, at the beginning of the winter season, and before traveling to a colder climate.

Checking the coolant level

WARNING - Removing radiator cap

(cid:129) Never attempt to remove the radi- ator cap while the engine is oper- ating or hot. Doing so might lead to cooling system and engine damage and could result in seri- ous personal injury from escap- ing hot coolant or steam.

(cid:129) Turn the engine off and wait until it cools down. Use extreme care when removing the radiator cap. Wrap a thick towel around it, and turn it counterclockwise slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cool- ing system. When you are sure all the pressure has been released, press down on the cap, using a thick towel, and continue turning counterclockwise to remove it.

(Continued)

(Continued) (cid:129) Even if the engine is not operat- ing, do not remove the radiator cap or the drain plug while the engine and radiator are hot. Hot coolant and steam may still blow out under pressure, causing seri- ous injury.

WARNING

The electric motor (cooling fan) is controlled by engine coolant tem- perature, refrigerant pressure and vehicle speed. It may sometimes operate even when the engine is not running. Use extreme caution when working near the blades of the cooling fan so that you are not injured by a rotating fan blades. As the engine coolant temperature decreases, the electric motor will automatically shut off. This is a nor- mal condition.

Maintenance

level should be

OMD070004N Check the condition and connections of all cooling system hoses and heater hoses. Replace any swollen or deterio- rated hoses. The coolant filled between F and L marks on the side of the coolant reservoir when the engine is cool. If the coolant level is low, add enough distilled (deionized) water. Bring the level to F, but do not overfill. If frequent addi- tions are required, see an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for a cooling system inspection.

7 23

Maintenance

Recommended engine coolant (cid:129) When adding coolant, use only deion- ized water or soft water for your vehicle and never mix hard water in the coolant filled at the factory. An improp- er coolant mixture can result in serious malfunction or engine damage.

(cid:129) The engine in your vehicle has aluminum engine parts and must be protected by an ethylene-glycol-based coolant to pre- vent corrosion and freezing.

(cid:129) DO NOT USE alcohol or methanol coolant or mix them with the specified coolant.

(cid:129) Do not use a solution that contains more than 60% antifreeze or less than 35% antifreeze, which would reduce the effectiveness of the solution.
