Before Driving

QRG

Driving Preparation Check the following items before you start driving.

■ Exterior Checks • Make sure there are no obstructions on the windows, door mirrors, exterior

lights, or other parts of the vehicle. u Remove any frost, snow, or ice. u Remove any snow on the roof, as this can slip down and obstruct your field of

vision while driving. If frozen solid, remove ice once it has softened.

u When removing ice from around the wheels, be sure not to damage the wheel

or wheel components.

• Make sure the hood is securely closed.

u If the hood opens while driving, your front view will be blocked.

TOC

• Make sure the tires are in good condition.

u Check air pressure, check for damage and excessive wear.

2 Checking and Maintaining Tires P. 279

• Make sure there are no people or objects behind or around the vehicle.

u There are blind spots from the inside.

1Exterior Checks

NOTICE When doors are frozen shut, use warm water around the door edges to melt any ice. Do not try to force them open, as this can damage the rubber trim around the doors. When done, wipe dry to avoid further freezing.

Do not pour warm water into the key cylinder. You will be unable to insert key if the water freezes in the hole.

Heat from the engine and exhaust can ignite flammable materials left under the hood, causing a fire. If you’ve parked your vehicle for an extended period, inspect and remove any debris that may have collected, such as dried grass and leaves that have fallen or have been carried in for use as a nest by a small animal.

Also check under the hood for leftover flammable materials after you or someone else has performed maintenance on your vehicle.

■ Interior Checks • Store or secure all items on board properly.

u Carrying too much cargo, or improperly storing it, can affect your vehicle’s

handling, stability, stopping distance, and tires, and make it unsafe.

2 Maximum Load Limit P. 211

• Do not pile items higher than the seat height.

u They can block your view and may be thrown forward in the event of sudden

braking.

• Do not place anything in the front seat footwells. Make sure to secure the

floor mat. u An object or unsecured floor mat can interfere with your brake and accelerator

pedal operation while driving.

• If you have any animals on board, do not let them move around in the vehicle.

u They may interfere with driving and a crash could occur.

• Securely close and lock all doors and the trunk.

2 Locking/Unlocking the Doors from the Inside P. 109

• Adjust your seating position properly.

u Adjust the head restraint, too. 2 Adjusting the Seats P. 129

Maximum Load Limit The maximum load for your vehicle is 850 lbs (385 kg). See Tire and Loading Information label attached to the driver’s doorjamb.

Label Example

This figure includes the total weight of all occupants, cargo, and accessories, and the tongue load if you are towing a trailer.

Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit -

(1) Locate the statement “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kg or XXX lbs.” on your vehicle’s placard.

(2) Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be

riding in your vehicle.

(3) Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kg

or XXX lbs.

(4) The resulting figure equals the available amount of cargo and luggage load

capacity. For example, if the “XXX” amount equals 1,400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb. passengers in your vehicle, the amount of available cargo and luggage load capacity is 650 lbs. (1,400 - 750 (5 x 150) = 650 lbs.)

(5) Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on

the vehicle. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in step 4.

(6) If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to

your vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle.

In addition, the total weight of the vehicle, all occupants, accessories, cargo, and trailer tongue load must not exceed the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or the Gross Axle Weight driver’s doorjamb.

Starting the Engine

1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.

1Starting the Engine

Brake Pedal

2. Check that the shift lever is in (P, then

depress the brake pedal. u Although it is possible to start the vehicle

in (N, it is safer to start it in (P.

Keep your foot firmly on the brake pedal when starting the engine.

The engine is harder to start in cold weather and in thinner air found at altitudes above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters).

When starting the engine in cold weather, turn off all electrical accessories such as the lights, climate control system, and rear defogger in order to reduce battery drain.

If you live in a region where winter is extremely cold, an engine block heater will improve starting and warming of the engine. If temperatures consistently below -22°F (-30°C) are expected, the coolant mixture should be changed to a higher concentration to prevent freezing. Consult a dealer for details.

If the exhaust system sounds abnormal or you can smell exhaust gas inside the vehicle, have your vehicle checked by a dealer. There may be a problem with the engine or exhaust system.

Precautions While Driving ■ In Rain Avoid driving in deep water and on flooded roads. This can damage the engine or driveline, or cause electrical component failure.

■ Other Precautions If there is a strong impact with something under the vehicle, stop in a safe location. Check the underside of the vehicle for damage or any fluid leaks.

uuWhen DrivinguPrecautions While Driving

QRG

1Precautions While Driving

NOTICE Do not operate the shift lever while pressing the accelerator pedal. You could damage the transmission.

If the ignition switch is turned to ACCESSORY (q or LOCK (0 while driving, the engine will shut down and all steering and brake power assist functions will stop, making it difficult to control the vehicle.

Do not put the shift lever in (N, as you will lose engine braking (and acceleration) performance.

During the first 600 miles (1,000 km) of operation, avoid sudden acceleration or full throttle operation so as not to damage the engine or powertrain.

Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km). You should also follow this when the brake pads are replaced.

TOC

NOTICE Following can damage the under spoiler: • Parking the vehicle by a parking block • Parallel parking along the road shoulder • Driving towards the bottom of a hill • Driving up or down to a different surface level

(such as a road shoulder)

• Driving on a rutted or bumpy road • Driving on a road with potholes

uuWhen DrivinguForward Collision Warning (FCW)*

QRG

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)* Alerts you when it detects the possibility of your vehicle colliding with the vehicle in front of yours.

If the system determines a collision is possible, it gives both visual and audible alerts.

uTake appropriate action to prevent a collision (apply the brakes, change

lanes, etc.).

■ How the system works The system may give warnings of potential collisions when your vehicle speed is above 10 mph (15 km/h).

You can set Long, Normal or Short for when warnings start:

1Forward Collision Warning (FCW)*

Never apply a film or attach any objects to the windshield that could obstruct the FCW camera’s field of vision.

Scratches, nicks, and other damage to the windshield within the FCW camera’s field of vision can cause the system to operate abnormally. If this occurs, we recommend that you replace the windshield with a genuine Honda replacement windshield. Making even minor repairs within the camera’s field of vision or installing an aftermarket replacement windshield may also cause the system to operate abnormally. After replacing the windshield, have a dealer recalibrate the camera. Proper calibration of the FCW camera is necessary for the system to operate properly.

The camera is located behind the rearview mirror.

■ Automatic shutoff FCW may automatically shut itself off and the FCW indicator comes and stays on when: • The temperature inside the system is high.

• The windshield is blocked by dirt, mud, leaves, wet snow, etc.

Once the conditions that caused FCW to shut off improve or are addressed (e.g., cleaning), the system comes back on.

1Automatic shutoff

To help reduce the likelihood that high interior temperatures will cause the camera system to shut off, when parking, find a shady area or face the front of the vehicle away from the sun. Also, do not use a reflective sunshade that can concentrate heat on the camera.

If the Camera Too Hot message appears: • Use the climate control system to cool down the

interior and, if necessary, the defroster mode when windows are fogged.

• Start driving the vehicle to lower the windshield temperature, which cools down the area around the FCW system.

■ FCW Limitations FCW may not activate or may not detect a vehicle in front of your vehicle, and may activate even when you are aware of a vehicle ahead of you, or when there is no vehicle ahead under the following conditions.

Condition

● The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you is too short. ● A vehicle cuts in front of you at a slow speed, and it brakes suddenly. ● A vehicle suddenly crosses in front of you. ● When either your vehicle or the vehicle ahead of you accelerates rapidly. ● The vehicle ahead of you is a motorcycle, a small vehicle, or a unique vehicle such as a tractor. ● When you drive off-road or on a mountain road, or curved and winding road for an extended period that makes it difficult for the camera to properly

detect a vehicle in front of you.

● When there are pedestrians or animals in front of your vehicle. ● When you drive in bad weather (rain, fog, etc.). ● A heavy load in the rear or modifications to the suspension tilts your vehicle. ● An abnormal tire condition is detected (wrong tire size, flat tire, etc.). ● When the windshield is blocked by dirt, mud, leaves, wet snow, etc. ● When the temperature inside the system is high. ● A sudden change between light and dark such as an entrance or exit of a tunnel. ● You drive into the sunlight (e.g. at dawn or dusk). ● When the windshield is dirty or cloudy. ● When streetlights are perceived as the taillight of a vehicle in front of yours. ● When driving at night, the vehicle ahead of you is running with either taillight bulb burned out. ● When you drive in the shadows of trees, buildings, etc.

uuWhen DrivinguLane Departure Warning (LDW) *

QRG

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)* Alerts you when the system detects a possibility of your vehicle unintentionally crossing over detected lane markings.

■ How the System Works

If your vehicle is getting too close to detected left or right side lane markings without a turn signal activated, LDW will give audible and visual alerts.

The beeper sounds and the Lane Departure message appears on the intelligent multi- information display (i-MID), letting you know that you need to take appropriate action.

1Lane Departure Warning (LDW)*

Important Safety Reminder Like all assistance systems, LDW has limitations. Over-reliance on LDW may result in a collision. It is always your responsibility to keep the vehicle within your driving lane.

LDW only alerts you when lane drift is detected without a turn signal in use. LDW may not detect all lane markings or lane departures; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and lane marker condition. It is always your responsibility to safely operate the vehicle and avoid collisions.

1LDW Camera

Never apply a film or attach any objects to the windshield that could obstruct the LDW camera’s field of vision.

Scratches, nicks, and other damage to the windshield within the LDW camera’s field of vision can cause the system to operate abnormally. Proper calibration of the LDW camera is necessary for the system to operate properly.

Do not place an object on the top of the instrument panel. It may reflect onto the windshield and prevent the system from detecting lane lines properly.

uuWhen DrivinguVehicle Stability Assist (VSA®), aka Electronic Stability Control (ESC), System

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®), aka Electronic Stability Control (ESC), System VSA® helps to stabilize the vehicle during cornering if the vehicle turns more or less than what was intended. It also assists in maintaining traction on slippery surfaces. It does so by regulating engine output and selectively applying the brakes.

■ VSA® Operation

VSA® System Indicator

When VSA® activates, you may notice that the engine does not respond to the accelerator. You may also notice some noise from the hydraulic system. You will also see the indicator blink.

1Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®), aka Electronic Stability Control

(ESC), System The VSA® may not function properly if tire type and size are mixed. Make sure to use the same size and type of tire, and the air pressures as specified.

When the VSA® indicator comes on and stays on while driving, there may be a problem with the system. While this may not interfere with normal driving, have your vehicle checked by a dealer immediately.

VSA® cannot enhance stability in all driving situations and does not control the entire braking system. You still need to drive and corner at speeds appropriate for the conditions and always leave a sufficient margin of safety.

The main function of the VSA® system is generally known as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The system also includes a traction control function.
