Be careful when judging the size or dis- tance of any object seen in the outside rear view mirror on the passenger’s side because it is a convex mirror. Do not drive with the mirrors folded backward. Both the driver and pas- senger side rear view mirrors must be extended and properly adjusted before driving.

Adjust the mirror so that you can just see the rear of your vehicle in the mir- ror. To reduce glare from the headlights of the vehicle behind you during night driving, operate the lever on the lower edge of the mirror. Daylight driving—Lever at position 1

Auto anti- glare inside rear view mirror

Adjust the mirror so that you can just see the rear of your vehicle in the mir- ror. This mirror is equipped with auto anti- glare function. The function is designed to reduce glare from the headlights of the vehicle behind you during night driving. When inserted and turned on, the inside rear view mirror al- ways turns on in the automatic function mode. The indicator illuminates to show you that the function is on.

Daytime running light (DRL) system (on some models) The Daytime Running Light (DRL) system can make it easier for others to see the front of your vehicle during the day. The DRL system can be helpful in many differ- ent driving conditions, but they can be especially helpful in the short periods after dawn and before sunset. The DRL system will make your front turn signal lights come on when: (cid:1) The ignition is on with the engine run-

ning.

(cid:1) The knob is in the “OFF” position or

position 1.

(cid:1) The parking brake is released. To turn off the DRL system, twist the knob to position 2 or turn the ignition switch off.

High- Low beams—For high beams, turn the headlights on and push the lever away from you (position 1). Pull the lever to- ward you (position 2) for low beams. The headlight high beam light indicator (blue light) on the instrument panel will tell you that the high beams are on. Flashing the high beam headlights (position 3)—Pull the way back. The high beam headlights turn off when you release the lever. You can flash the high beam headlights with the knob turned to “OFF”.

TURN SIGNALS To signal a turn, push the headlight/ turn signal lever up or down to position 1. The key must be in the “ON” position. The lever automatically returns after you make a turn, but you may have to return it by hand after you change lanes. To signal a lane change, move the lever up or down to the pressure point (position 2) and hold it. If the turn signal indicator lights (green lights) on the instrument panel flash faster than normal, a front or rear turn signal bulb is burned out.

To turn on the front fog lights, push the switch. They will come on when the headlights are turned on.

To turn on the interior light, slide the switch. The interior light switch has the following positions: “ON”—Keeps the light on all the time. “OFF”—Turns the light off. “DOOR”—Turns light on when any door is opened. The light goes off when all the doors are closed. To prevent the battery being discharged, the light will automatically turn off when the key is removed and the door is left opened with the switch at the “DOOR” position for 20 minutes or more.

ILLUMINATED ENTRY SYSTEM When the switch is in the “DOOR” posi- tion and any door is opened, the light will come on. After all the doors are closed, the light remains on for about 15 seconds before fading out. However, in the following cases, the light goes out immediately: (cid:1) All the doors are closed when the igni- tion key is in the “ACC” or “ON” posi- tion.

(cid:1) The ignition key is turned to the “ACC”, “ON” or “START” after all the doors are closed.

The “INT TIME” band lets you adjust the wiping time interval when the wiper lever is in the intermittent position (position 1). Twist increase the time between sweeps, and downward to decrease it. To squirt washer fluid, pull the lever toward you and release it. If the windshield wipers are off, they will operate a couple of times after the washer squirts. For instructions on adding washer fluid, see “Adding washer fluid” on page 381 in Section 7- 3. In freezing weather, warm the windshield with the defroster before using the washer. Fuel gauge

Low fuel level warning light

The gauge the approximate quantity of fuel remaining in the tank when the ignition switch is on. Nearly full—Needle at “F” Nearly empty—Needle at “E” It is a good idea to keep the tank over 1/4 full. The needle moves when braking, acceler- ating or making turns. This is caused by the movement of the fuel in the tank. If the fuel level approaches “E” or the low fuel level warning light comes on, fill the fuel tank as soon as possible.

On inclines or curves, due to the move- ment of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge needle may fluctuate or the low fuel level warning light may come on earlier than usual. If the fuel tank is completely empty, the malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Fill the fuel tank immediately. The indicator lamp goes off after driving several times. If the indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.

Engine coolant temperature gauge

The gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature when the ignition switch is on. The engine operating temperature will vary with changes in weather and engine load. If the needle moves into the red zone, your engine is too hot. If your vehicle overheats, stop your vehicle and allow the engine to cool. Your vehicle may overheat during severe operating conditions, such as:

(cid:1) Do not remove the thermostat in the engine cooling system as this may cause the engine to overheat. The thermostat is designed to con- trol the flow of coolant to keep the temperature of the engine within the specified operating range.

The tachometer indicates engine speed in thousands of rpm (revolutions per minute). Use it while driving to select correct shift points and to prevent en- gine lugging and over- revving. Driving with the engine running too fast causes excessive engine wear and poor fuel economy. Remember, in most cases the slower the engine speed, the greater the fuel economy.

3. Trip meter reset knob—Resets the two trip meters to zero, and also change the meter display. To change the meter display, quickly push and release the knob. The meter display changes in the order from the odometer to trip meter A to trip meter then back B, the odometer each time you push. To reset the trip meter A to zero, dis- play the meter A reading, then push and hold the knob until the meter is set to zero. The same process can be applied for resetting the trip meter B.

A warning light turning on briefly during operation does not indicate a problem.

Without the vehicle stability control system— If either of the following conditions occurs, immediately stop your vehicle at a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer. (cid:1) The

light does not turn off even after the parking brake is released while the engine is running. In this case, the brakes may not work properly and your stopping distance will become longer. De- press the brake pedal firmly and bring the vehicle to an immediate stop.

(cid:1) The brake system warning light re- mains on together with the “ABS” warning light. In this case, not only the anti- lock brake system will fail but also the vehicle will become extremely un- stable during braking.

With the vehicle stability control sys- tem— If any of the following conditions oc- curs, immediately stop your vehicle at a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer. (cid:1) The

light does not turn off even after the parking brake is released while the engine is running.

seconds after the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position. It is normal if it turns off after a while.

(cid:1) Depressing the brake pedal repeatedly may light and buzzer. It is normal if the light turns off and the buzzer stops sounding after a few seconds.

(cid:1) You may hear a small sound in the engine compartment after the engine is started or the brake pedal is depressed repeatedly. This is a pump pulsating sound of the brake system, and it is not a malfunction.

(b) Driver’s Seat Belt Reminder Light

The light and buzzer act as a reminder to buckle up the driver’s seat belt. Once the ignition key is turned to “ON” or “START”, the reminder light flashes and buzzer sounds if the driver’s seat belt is not fastened. Unless the driver fastens the belt, the light continues flashing and the buzzer stops after about 4 to 8 seconds. (c) Front Passenger’s Seat Belt Re-

minder Light

The light acts as a reminder to have the front passenger buckle up the seat belt. Once the ignition key is turned to “ON” or “START”, the reminder light flashes if a passenger sits in the front passenger seat and does not fasten the seat belt. If luggage or other load is placed on the front passenger seat, depending on its weight, the reminder light may flash.

(d) Charging System Warning Light This warning the light comes on when ignition key is turned to the “ON” position, and goes off when the engine is started. When there are problems in the charging system while the engine is running, the warning light comes on.

NOTICE

When the charging system warning light comes on while the engine is running, malfunctions such as the en- gine drive belt being broken may have occurred. If the warning light comes on, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer.

(e) Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning

Light

This light warns that the engine oil pres- sure is too low. If it flickers or stays on while you are driving, pull off the road to a safe place and stop the engine immediately. Call a Toyota dealer or qualified repair shop for assistance. The flicker when the engine is idling or it may come on briefly after a hard stop. There is no cause for concern if it then goes out when the engine is accelerated slightly. The light may come on when the oil level is extremely is not designed to indicate low oil level, and the oil level must be checked using the level dipstick.

(f) Malfunction Indicator Lamp This lamp comes on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position and goes off after the engine starts. This means that the warning light system is operating properly. If the lamp remains on, or the lamp comes on while driving, first check the followings. (cid:1) Empty fuel tank

If the fuel tank is empty, refuel immedi- ately.

(cid:1) Loose fuel tank cap

If the fuel tank cap is loose, securely tighten it.

These cases are temporary malfunctions. The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after taking several driving trips. If the lamp does not go off even after several trips, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. If the fuel tank is not empty or the fuel tank cap is not loose... (cid:1) There is a problem somewhere in the engine, emission control system, elec- tronic throttle control system, automatic transmission electrical system or warn- ing light system itself.

Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible to service the vehicle. If engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed, there may be a problem somewhere in the elec- tronic throttle control system. At this time, vibration may occur. Howev- er, if you depress the accelerator pedal more firmly and slowly, you can drive your vehicle at low speeds. Have your vehicle checked by your Toyota dealer as soon as possible. Even if the abnormality of the electronic throttle control system is corrected during low speed driving, the system may not be recovered until the engine is stopped and ignition key the to “ACC” or “LOCK” position.

For manual transmission: Never remove the key when the ve- hicle is moving, as this will lock the steering wheel and result in loss of steering control.

NOTICE

Do not leave the key in the “ON” position if the engine is not running. The battery will discharge and the ignition could be damaged.

“LOCK”—Engine is off and the steering wheel is locked. The key can be re- moved only at this position. You must push in the key to turn the key from “ACC” to the “LOCK” position. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the selector lever must be put in the “P” position before pushing the key. Vehicles with engine immobilizer system— Once you remove the key, the engine im- mobilizer system is automatically set. (See “Engine immobilizer system” on page 15
in Section 1- 2.) When starting the engine, the key may seem stuck at the “LOCK” position. To free it, first be sure the key is pushed all the way in, and then rock the steering wheel slightly while turning the key gently. Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from underneath the deck for several min- utes. This is normal operation and does not “Leak indicate a malfunction. detection pump” on page x.) When the front drive control switch knob is in “L4” (low- speed position, four- wheel drive), the driving pattern selector setting has no effect on gear shift timing. When the lever is in the “D” position, the automatic transmission system will select the most suitable gear for running condi- tions such as normal cruising, hill climb- ing, hard towing, etc. Always use the “D” position for better fuel economy and quieter driving. If the engine coolant temperature is low or when the front drive control switch knob is in “L4” (low- speed position, four- wheel drive), the transmission will not shift into the over- drive gear even in the “D” position.
