CAUTION
To avoid potential death or serious injury when the front passenger occu- pant classification system does not detect the conditions correctly, ob- serve the following. D Make sure the front passenger oc- cupant classification indicator light indicates “ON” when using the seat belt extender for the front passen- ger seat. If the indicator light indi- cates “OFF”, disconnect the extend- er tongue from the seat belt buckle, then reconnect the seat belt. Recon- nect the seat belt extender after making sure the indicator light indi- cates “ON”. If you use the seat belt extender while the light indicates “OFF”, the front passen- ger airbag and side airbag on the front passenger side may not acti- vate correctly, which could cause death or serious injury in the event of collision.

D Do not recline the front passenger seatback so far that it touches a rear seat. This may cause the “OFF” indicator to be illuminated, which the passen- ger’s airbags will not deploy in the event of a severe accident. If the seatback touches the rear seat, re- turn to a position where it does not touches the rear seat. Keep the front passenger seatback as upright as possible when the ve- hicle is moving. Reclining the seat- back excessively may lessen the ef- fectiveness of the seat belt system. D If an adult sits in the front passen- ger seat, the occupant classification indicator light should indicate “ON”. If the “OFF” indicator is illumina- ted, ask the passenger to sit up straight, well back in the seat, feet on the floor, and with the seat belt worn correctly. If the “OFF” indica- tor still remains illuminated, either ask the passenger to move to the rear seat, or if that is not possible, move the front passenger seat fully rearward.

Child restraint— —Child restraint precautions Toyota strongly urges the use of ap- propriate child restraint systems for children. The laws of all 50 states in the U.S.A. and Canada now require the use of a child restraint system. Your vehicle conforms to SAEJ1819. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. See “Seat belts” on page 40 in this Section for details.
CAUTION
D For effective protection in automo- bile accidents and sudden stops, a child must be properly restrained, using a seat belt or child restraint system depending on the age and size of the child. Holding a child in your arms is not a substitute for a child restraint system. In an acci- dent, the child can be crushed against the windshield, or between you and the vehicle’s interior.
D Toyota strongly urges use of a proper child restraint system which conforms to the size of the child, installed on the rear seat. Accord- ing to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. D Never install a rear−facing child re- straint system on the front passen- ger seat even if the front passenger occupant indicator light indicates “OFF”. In the event of an accident, the impact of the rapid inflation of the front passen- ger airbag could cause death or se- rious injury to the child if the rear− facing child is installed on front passenger seat.

the
D A forward−facing child restraint sys- to be tem should be allowed front passenger installed on seat only when it is unavoidable. Always move the seat as far back as possible even if the front pas- senger occupant classification indi- cator light indicates “OFF”, because the front passenger airbag could in- flate with considerable speed and force. Otherwise, the child may be killed or seriously injured.
D On vehicles with side airbags and curtain shield airbags, do not allow the child to lean his/her head or any part of his/her body against the door or the area of the seat, front or rear pillar or roof side rail from which the side airbags or curtain shield airbags deploy even if the child is seated in the child restraint system. It is dangerous if the side airbag and/or curtain shield airbag inflate, and the impact could cause death or serious injury to the child.

—Child restraint system A child restraint system for a small child or baby must itself be properly restrained on the seat with the lap por- tion of the lap/shoulder belt. You must carefully consult the manufacturer’s in- structions which accompany the child restraint system. To provide proper restraint, use a child restraint system following the manufactur- er’s instructions about the appropriate age and size of the child for the child restraint system. Install the child restraint system correctly following the instructions provided by its manufacturer. General directions are also provided under the following illustrations. restraint system should be The child installed on the rear seat. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. In this case, set the dial to the full intensity posi- tion.
To turn on the interior light, slide the switch. The interior light has the following posi- tions: “OFF”—Turns the light off. “ON”—Keeps the light on all the time. “DOOR”—Turns the light on when any of the side doors, back door or glass hatch is opened. Fuel gauge
Engine coolant temperature gauge
On inclines or curves, due to the move- ment of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge needle may fluctuate or the low fuel level warning light may come on earlier than usual. If the fuel tank is completely empty, the malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Fill the fuel tank immediately. The indicator lamp goes off after driving several times. If the indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible.
The gauge indicates the engine coolant temperature when the ignition switch is on. The engine operating temperature will vary with changes in weather and engine load. If the needle moves into the red zone, your engine is too hot. If your vehicle overheats, stop your vehicle and allow the engine to cool.
Low fuel level warning light
indicates
The gauge the approximate quantity of fuel remaining in the tank when the ignition switch is on. Nearly full—Needle at “F” Nearly empty—Needle at “E” It is a good idea to keep the tank over 1/4 full. The needle moves when braking, acceler- ating or making turns. This is caused by the movement of the fuel in the tank. If the fuel level approaches “E” or the low fuel level warning light comes on, fill the fuel tank as soon as possible.
102
Your vehicle may overheat during severe operating conditions, such as: D Driving up a long hill on a hot day. D Reducing speed or stopping after high
speed driving.
D Idling for a long period with the air conditioning on in stop−and−go traffic.
D Towing a trailer.
NOTICE
z Do not remove the thermostat
in the engine cooling system as this may cause the engine to overheat. The thermostat is designed to con- trol the flow of coolant to keep the temperature of the engine within the specified operating range.
z Do not continue driving with an overheated engine. See “If your ve- hicle overheats” on page 230 in Section 4.

Tachometer
NOTICE
Do not let the indicator needle get into the red zone. This may cause severe engine damage.
The tachometer indicates engine speed in thousands of rpm (revolutions per minute). Use it while driving to select correct shift points and to prevent en- gine lugging and over−revving. Driving with the engine running too fast causes excessive engine wear and poor fuel economy. Remember, in most cases the slower the engine speed, the greater the fuel economy. 1.8 L 4−cylinder (2ZZ−GE) engine only— The engine will not exceed 7100 rpm be- fore it warms up.
