1. Pull the elastic cord out from between the edge of the seatback and the interior body to remove the guide from its storage clip.


2. Slide the guide under and past the belt. The elastic cord must be under the belt. Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide.


3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat.


The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top.

Safety Belt Pretensioners Your vehicle has safety belt pretensioners. They are on the buckle end of the safety belts for the driver and right front passenger. They help the safety belts reduce a person’s forward movement in a moderate to severe frontal and near frontal crash. Pretensioners work only once. If they activate in a crash, you will need to get new ones, and probably other new parts for your safety belt system. See Replacing Restraint System Parts After a Crash on page 1-57.


Safety Belt Extender If the vehicle’s safety belt will fasten around you, you should use it. But if a safety belt is not long enough, your dealer will order you an extender. It is free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you. To help avoid personal injury, do not let someone else use it, and use it only for the seat it is made to fit. The extender has been designed for adults. Never use it for securing child seats. To wear it, just attach it to the regular safety belt. For more information, see the instruction sheet that comes with the extender.


4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as


described in Rear Seat Passengers on page 1-23. Make sure that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder.


To remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the belt edges together so that you can take them out of the guides. Pull the guide upward to expose its storage clip, and then slide the guide onto the clip. Turn the guide and clip inward and in between the seatback and the interior body, leaving only the loop of the elastic cord exposed.

Child Restraints


Older Children


Older children who have outgrown booster seats should wear the vehicle’s safety belts.


Q: What is the proper way to wear safety belts? A: If possible, an older child should wear a


lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide. The shoulder belt should not cross the face or neck. The lap belt should fit snugly below the hips, just touching the top of the thighs. It should never be worn over the abdomen, which could cause severe or even fatal internal injuries in a crash.


Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear seat. In a crash, children who are not buckled up can strike other people who are buckled up, or can be thrown out of the vehicle. Older children need to use safety belts properly.

Q: What if a child is wearing a lap-shoulder belt, but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the child’s face or neck?


A: If the child is sitting in a seat next to a window, move the child toward the center of the vehicle. If the child is sitting in the center rear seat position, move the child toward the safety belt buckle. In either case, be sure that the shoulder belt still is on the child’s shoulder, so that in a crash the child’s upper body would have the restraint that belts provide. If the child is sitting in a rear seat outside position, see Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides for Children and Small Adults on page 1-26


{CAUTION:


Never do this. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt can not properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time.

Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. The belt’s force would then be applied right on the child’s abdomen. That could cause serious or fatal injuries.


The lap portion of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the child’s thighs. This applies belt force to the child’s pelvic bones in a crash.

Infants and Young Children Everyone in a vehicle needs protection! This includes infants and all other children. Neither the distance traveled nor the age and size of the traveler changes the need, for everyone, to use safety restraints. In fact, the law in every state in the United States and in every Canadian province says children up to some age must be restrained while in a vehicle. Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have the protection provided by appropriate restraints. Young children should not use the vehicle’s adult safety belts alone, unless there is no other choice. Instead, they need to use a child restraint.


{CAUTION:


People should never hold a baby in their arms while riding in a vehicle. A baby does not weigh much — until a crash. During a crash a baby will become so heavy it is not possible to hold it. For example, in a crash at only 25 mph (40 km/h), a 12 lb (5.5 kg) baby will suddenly become a 240 lb (110 kg) force on a person’s arms. A baby should be secured in an appropriate restraint.

Children who are up against, or very close to, any airbag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them. Young children and infants need the protection that a child restraint system can provide.


Q: What are the different types of add-on child


restraints?


A: Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by the


vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used.

The body structure of a young child is quite unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom the safety belts are designed. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should. Instead, it may settle up around the child’s abdomen. In a crash, the belt would apply force on a body area that is unprotected by any bony structure. This alone could cause serious or fatal injuries. Young children always should be secured in appropriate child restraints.


For most basic types of child restraints, there are many different models available. When purchasing a child restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in a motor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. The restraint manufacturer’s instructions that come with the restraint state the weight and height limitations for a particular child restraint. In addition, there are many kinds of restraints available for children with special needs.


{CAUTION:


Newborn infants need complete support, including support for the head and neck. This is necessary because a newborn infant’s neck is weak and its head weighs so much compared with the rest of its body. In a crash, an infant in a rear-facing seat settles into the restraint, so the crash forces can be distributed across the strongest part of an infant’s body, the back and shoulders. Infants always should be secured in appropriate infant restraints.

Child Restraint Systems


An infant car bed (A), a special bed made for use in a motor vehicle, is an infant restraint system designed to restrain or position a child on a continuous flat surface. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle.


A rear-facing infant seat (B) provides restraint with the seating surface against the back of the infant. The harness system holds the infant in place and, in a crash, acts to keep the infant positioned in the restraint.

A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields.


A booster seat (F-G) is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle’s safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high-back booster seats have a five-point harness. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window.

When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed to be used in a vehicle. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. Then follow the instructions for the restraint. You may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both. These restraints use the belt system or the LATCH system in your vehicle, but the child also has to be secured within the restraint to help reduce the chance of personal injury. When securing an add-on child restraint, refer to the instructions that come with the restraint which may be on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both, and to this manual. The child restraint instructions are important, so if they are not available, obtain a replacement copy from the manufacturer.


Q: How do child restraints work? A: A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built-in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle. An add-on child restraint system is a portable one, which is purchased by the vehicle’s owner. For many years, add-on child restraints have used the adult belt system in the vehicle. To help reduce the chance of injury, the child also has to be secured within the restraint. The vehicle’s belt system secures the add-on child restraint in the vehicle, and the add-on child restraint’s harness system holds the child in place within the restraint. One system, the three-point harness, has straps that come down over each of the infant’s shoulders and buckle together at the crotch. The five-point harness system has two shoulder straps, two hip straps and a crotch strap. A shield may take the place of hip straps. A T-shaped shield has shoulder straps that are attached to a flat pad which rests low against the child’s body. A shelf- or armrest-type shield has straps that are attached to a wide, shelf-like shield that swings up or to the side.

Where to Put the Restraint Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. We, therefore, recommend that child restraints be secured in a rear seat, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat and an older child riding in a booster seat. Never put a rear-facing child restraint in the front passenger seat. Here is why:


{CAUTION:


A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured or killed if the right front passenger’s airbag inflates. This is because the back of the rear-facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating airbag. Always secure a rear-facing child restraint in a rear seat. If you need to secure a forward-facing child restraint in the right front seat, always move the front passenger seat as far back as it will go. It is better to secure the child restraint in a rear seat.

Wherever you install it, be sure to secure the child restraint properly. Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure people in the vehicle. Be sure to properly secure any child restraint in your vehicle — even when no child is in it.


Top Strap Some child restraints have a top strap, or “top tether.” It can help restrain the child restraint during a collision. For it to work, a top strap must be properly anchored to the vehicle. Some top strap-equipped child restraints are designed for use with or without the top strap being anchored. Others require the top strap always to be anchored. Be sure to read and follow the instructions for your child restraint. If yours requires that the top strap be anchored, do not use the restraint unless it is anchored properly. If the child restraint does not have a top strap, one can be obtained, in kit form, for many child restraints. Ask the child restraint manufacturer whether or not a kit is available.


In Canada, the law requires that forward-facing child restraints have a top strap, and that the strap be anchored. In the United States, some child restraints also have a top strap. If your child restraint has a top strap, it should be anchored. Anchor the top strap to an anchor point specified in Top Strap Anchor Location on page 1-40. Be sure to use an anchor point located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed.


{CAUTION:


Each top tether bracket is designed to anchor only one child restraint. Attaching more than one child restraint to a single bracket could cause the anchor to come loose or even break during a crash. A child or others could be injured if this happens. To help prevent injury to people and damage to your vehicle, attach only one child restraint per bracket.


Once you have the top strap anchored, you will be ready to secure the child restraint itself. Tighten the top strap when and as the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions say.

Top Strap Anchor Location The vehicle has top strap anchors already installed for the rear seating positions.


They are located on the filler panel above the rear seats. Open the covers to access the anchors.

Do not secure a child restraint with a top strap in the right front passenger’s position if a national or local law requires that the top strap be anchored, or if the instructions that come with the child restraint say that the top strap must be anchored. There is no place to anchor the top strap in this position. If the child restraint is equipped with the LATCH system, see “Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System)” following.


Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) The vehicle has the LATCH system. The anchors for the LATCH system are located in the rear seating positions. This system, designed to make installation of child restraints easier, does not use the vehicle’s safety belts. Instead, it uses vehicle anchors and child restraint attachments to secure the restraints. Some restraints also use another vehicle anchor to secure a top tether strap.

To assist you in locating the lower anchors for this child restraint system, each seating position with the LATCH system has a label on the seatback at each lower anchor position.


The labels are located near the base of all three rear seating positions.


{CAUTION:


If a LATCH-type child restraint is not attached to its anchorage points, the restraint will not be able to protect the child correctly. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Make sure that a LATCH-type child restraint is properly installed using the anchorage points, or use the vehicle’s safety belts to secure the restraint, following the instructions that came with that restraint, and also the instructions in this manual.

Securing a Child Restraint Designed for the LATCH System 1. Find the LATCH anchorages for the seating


position you want to use, where the bottom of the seatback meets the back of the seat cushion. See Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) on page 1-40.


2. Put the child restraint on the seat. 3. Attach and tighten the LATCH attachments on the


child restraint to the LATCH anchorages in the vehicle. The child restraint instructions will show you how.


4. If the child restraint is forward-facing, attach and tighten the top tether to the top tether anchorage. The child restraint instructions will show you how. Also see Top Strap on page 1-38.


5. Push and pull the child restraint in different


directions to be sure it is secure.


To remove the child restraint, simply unhook the top tether from the top tether anchorage and then disconnect the LATCH attachments from the LATCH anchorages.


Securing a Child Restraint in a Rear Seat Position If your child restraint is equipped with the LATCH system, see Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) on page 1-40. See Top Strap on page 1-38 if the child restraint has one. If your child restraint does not have the LATCH system, you will be using the lap-shoulder belt to secure the child restraint in this position. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say. 1. Put the child restraint on the seat. 2. Pick up the latch plate, and run the lap and shoulder


portions of the vehicle’s safety belt through or around the restraint. The child restraint instructions will show you how.


3. Buckle the belt. Make sure the release button is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to.

4. Pull the rest of the shoulder belt all the way out of


the retractor to set the lock.


5. To tighten the belt, push down on the child restraint,


pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion of the belt and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. If you are using a forward-facing child restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to push down on the child restraint as you tighten the belt.


6. Push and pull the child restraint in different


directions to be sure it is secure.


To remove the child restraint, just unbuckle the vehicle’s safety belt and let it go back all the way. The safety belt will move freely again and be ready to work for an adult or larger child passenger.

Securing a Child Restraint in the Right Front Seat Position If your child restraint is equipped with the LATCH system, see Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) on page 1-40. See Top Strap on page 1-38 if your child restraint has one. There is no top strap anchor in the right front passenger’s position. Do not secure a child seat in this position if a national or local law requires that the top strap be anchored, or if the instructions that come with the child restraint say that the top strap must be anchored.


Your vehicle has a right front passenger airbag. Never put a rear-facing child restraint in this seat. Here is why:

A child in a rear-facing child restraint can be seriously injured or killed if the right front passenger’s airbag inflates. This is because the back of the rear-facing child restraint would be very close to the inflating airbag. Always secure a rear-facing child restraint in a rear seat.


A rear seat is a safer place to secure a forward-facing child restraint.

You will be using the lap-shoulder belt to secure the child restraint in this position. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. Secure the child in the child restraint when and as the instructions say. 1. Because your vehicle has a right front passenger’s airbag, always move the seat as far back as it will go before securing a forward-facing child restraint. See Manual Seats on page 1-2.

Airbag System Your vehicle has a frontal airbag for the driver and another frontal airbag for the right front passenger. Your vehicle may also have roof mounted side impact airbags. Roof mounted side impact airbags are available for the driver and the passenger seated directly behind the driver and for the right front passenger and the passenger seated directly behind that passenger. If your vehicle has side impact airbags, the words AIR BAG will appear on the airbag covering on the ceiling near the driver’s and right front passenger’s window. Frontal airbags are designed to help reduce the risk of injury from the force of an inflating frontal airbag. But these airbags must inflate very quickly to do their job and comply with federal regulations. Here are the most important things to know about the airbag system:

You can be severely injured or killed in a crash if you are not wearing your safety belt — even if you have airbags. Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. Airbags are “supplemental restraints” to the safety belts. All airbags are designed to work with safety belts but do not replace them. Frontal airbags for the driver and right front passenger are designed to deploy only in moderate to severe frontal and near frontal crashes. They are not designed to inflate in rollover, rear or low-speed frontal crashes, or in many side crashes. And, for some unrestrained occupants, frontal airbags may provide less protection in frontal crashes than more forceful airbags have provided in the past. The roof-mounted side impact airbags are designed to inflate only in moderate to severe crashes where something hits the

side of your vehicle. They are not designed to inflate in frontal, in rollover or in rear crashes. Everyone in your vehicle should wear a safety belt properly — whether or not there is an airbag for that person.


{CAUTION:


Both frontal and side impact airbags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. If you are too close to an inflating airbag, as you would be if you were leaning forward, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position for airbag inflation before and during a crash. Always wear your safety belt even with frontal airbags. The driver should sit as far back as possible while still maintaining control of the vehicle. Occupants should not lean on or sleep against the door.

There is an airbag readiness light on the instrument panel cluster, which shows the airbag symbol.


Where Are the Airbags?


The system checks the airbag electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. See Airbag Readiness Light on page 3-38
for more information.


The driver’s airbag is in the middle of the steering wheel.

The side impact airbag for the driver and the person seated directly behind the driver is in the ceiling above the side windows.

If something is between an occupant and an airbag, the bag might not inflate properly or it might force the object into that person causing severe injury or even death. The path of an inflating airbag must be kept clear. Do not put anything between an occupant and an airbag, and do not attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other airbag covering. And, if your vehicle has side impact airbags, never secure anything to the roof of your vehicle by routing the rope or tiedown through any door or window opening. If you do, the path of an inflating side impact airbag will be blocked. The path of an inflating airbag must be kept clear.


The side impact airbag for the right front passenger and the person seated directly behind that passenger is in the ceiling above the side windows.

When Should an Airbag Inflate? The driver’s and right front passenger’s frontal airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes. But they are designed to inflate only if the impact exceeds a predetermined deployment threshold. Deployment thresholds take into account a variety of desired deployment and non-deployment events and are used to predict how severe a crash is likely to be in time for the airbags to inflate and help restrain the occupants. Whether your frontal airbags will or should deploy is not based on how fast your vehicle is traveling. It depends largely on what you hit, the direction of the impact and how quickly your vehicle slows down. In addition, your vehicle has “dual stage” frontal airbags, which adjust the restraint according to crash severity. Your vehicle is equipped with electronic frontal sensors which help the sensing system distinguish between a moderate frontal impact and a more severe frontal impact. For moderate frontal impacts, these airbags inflate at a level less than full deployment. For more severe frontal impacts, full deployment occurs. If the front of your vehicle goes straight into a wall that does not move or deform, the threshold level for the reduced deployment is about 12 to 16 mph (19 to 26 km/h), and the threshold level for a full deployment is about 18 to 24 mph (29 to 38.5 km/h). (The threshold level can vary, however, with specific vehicle design, so that it can be somewhat above or below this range.)


Airbags may inflate at different crash speeds. For example:


If the vehicle hits a stationary object, the airbag could inflate at a different crash speed than if the object were moving. If the object deforms, the airbag could inflate at a different crash speed than if the object does not deform. If the vehicle hits a narrow object (like a pole) the airbag could inflate at a different crash speed than if the vehicle hits a wide object (like a wall). If the vehicle goes into an object at an angle the airbag could inflate at a different crash speed than if the vehicle goes straight into the object.


Frontal airbags (driver and right front passenger) are not intended to inflate during vehicle rollovers, rear impacts, or in many side impacts because inflation would not likely help the occupants. Side impact airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe side crashes. A side impact airbag will inflate if the crash severity is above the system’s designed “threshold level.” The threshold level can vary with specific vehicle design. Side impact airbags are not designed to inflate in frontal or near-frontal impacts, rollovers or rear impacts, because inflation would not likely help the occupant. A side impact airbag will only deploy on the side of the vehicle that is struck.

(cid:127) (cid:127) (cid:127) (cid:127) In any particular crash, no one can say whether an airbag should have inflated simply because of the damage to a vehicle or because of what the repair costs were. For frontal airbags, inflation is determined by the angle of the impact and how quickly the vehicle slows down in frontal or near-frontal impacts. For side impact airbags, inflation is determined by the location and severity of the impact.


What Makes an Airbag Inflate? In an impact of sufficient severity, the airbag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. For both frontal and side impact airbags, the sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the airbag. The inflator, airbag, and related hardware are all part of the airbag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger. For vehicles with side impact airbags, the airbag modules are located in the ceiling of the vehicle, near the side windows.


How Does an Airbag Restrain? In moderate to severe frontal or near frontal collisions, even belted occupants can contact the steering wheel or the instrument panel. In moderate to severe side collisions, even belted occupants can contact the inside of the vehicle. The airbag supplements the protection provided by safety belts. Airbags distribute the force of the impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper body, stopping the occupant more gradually. But the frontal airbags would not help you in many types of collisions, including rollovers, rear impacts, and many side impacts, primarily because an occupant’s motion is not toward the airbag. Side impact airbags would not help you in many types of collisions, including frontal or near frontal collisions, rollovers, and rear impacts, primarily because an occupant’s motion is not toward those airbags. Airbags should never be regarded as anything more than a supplement to safety belts, and then only in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions for the driver’s and right front passenger’s frontal airbags, and only in moderate to severe side collisions for side impact airbags.

What Will You See After an Airbag Inflates? After an airbag inflates, it quickly deflates, so quickly that some people may not even realize the airbag inflated. Some components of the airbag module — the steering wheel hub for the driver’s airbag, the instrument panel for the right front passenger’s bag or the ceiling of your vehicle near the side windows — will be hot for a short time. The parts of the bag that come into contact with you may be warm, but not too hot to touch. There will be some smoke and dust coming from the vents in the deflated airbags. Airbag inflation does not prevent the driver from seeing or being able to steer the vehicle, nor does it stop people from leaving the vehicle.


{CAUTION:


When an airbag inflates, there is dust in the air. This dust could cause breathing problems for people with a history of asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so. If you have breathing problems but can not get out of the vehicle after an airbag inflates, then get fresh air by opening a window or a door. If you experience breathing problems following an airbag deployment, you should seek medical attention.


In many crashes severe enough to inflate an airbag, windshields are broken by vehicle deformation. Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the right front passenger airbag. (cid:127) Airbags are designed to inflate only once. After an


airbag inflates, you will need some new parts for your airbag system. If you do not get them, the airbag system will not be there to help protect you in another crash. A new system will include airbag modules and possibly other parts. The service manual for your vehicle covers the need to replace other parts.

diagnostic module which records information after a crash. See Vehicle Data Collection and Event Data Recorders on page 7-10. Let only qualified technicians work on your airbag system. Improper service can mean that your airbag system will not work properly. See your dealer for service.


If you damage the covering for the driver’s


Notice: or the right front passenger’s airbag, or the side impact airbag covering on the ceiling near the side windows, the airbag may not work properly. You may have to replace the airbag module in the steering wheel, both the airbag module and the instrument panel for the right front passenger’s airbag, or side impact airbag module and ceiling covering for the roof-mounted side impact airbag. Do not open or break the airbag coverings.

Servicing Your Airbag-Equipped Vehicle Airbags affect how your vehicle should be serviced. There are parts of the airbag system in several places around your vehicle. You do not want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. Your dealer and the service manual have information about servicing your vehicle and the airbag system. To purchase a service manual, see Service Publications Ordering Information on page 7-13.


{CAUTION:


For up to 10 seconds after the ignition key is turned off and the battery is disconnected, an airbag can still inflate during improper service. You can be injured if you are close to an airbag when it inflates. Avoid yellow connectors. They are probably part of the airbag system. Be sure to follow proper service procedures, and make sure the person performing work for you is qualified to do so.


The airbag system does not need regular maintenance.


(cid:127) Restraint System Check


Checking Your Restraint Systems Now and then, make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. Torn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in a crash. They can rip apart under impact forces. If a belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away. Also look for any opened or broken airbag covers, and have them repaired or replaced. (The airbag system does not need regular maintenance.)


Replacing Restraint System Parts After a Crash


{CAUTION:


A crash can damage the restraint systems in your vehicle. A damaged restraint system may not properly protect the person using it, resulting in serious injury or even death in a crash. To help make sure your restraint systems are working properly after a crash, have them inspected and any necessary replacements made as soon as possible.


If you have had a crash, do you need new belts or LATCH system parts? After a very minor collision, nothing may be necessary. But if the belts were stretched, as they would be if worn during a more severe crash, then you need new parts.

If the LATCH system was being used during a more severe crash, you may need new LATCH system parts. If belts are cut or damaged, replace them. Collision damage also may mean you will need to have LATCH system, safety belt or seat parts repaired or replaced. New parts and repairs may be necessary even if the belt or LATCH system was not being used at the time of the collision. If an airbag inflates, you will need to replace airbag system parts. See the part on the airbag system earlier in this section.


If the frontal airbags inflate, you will also need to replace the driver’s and right front passenger’s safety belt buckle assembly. Be sure to do so. Then the new buckle assembly will be there to help protect you in a collision. After a crash you may need to replace the driver and front passenger’s safety belt buckle assemblies, even if the frontal airbags have not deployed. The driver and front passenger’s safety belt buckle assemblies contain the safety belt pretensioners. Have your safety belt pretensioners checked if your vehicle has been in a collision, or if your airbag readiness light stays on after you start your vehicle or while you are driving. See Airbag Readiness Light on page 3-38.

Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The children or others could be badly injured or even killed. Do not leave the keys in a vehicle with children.

The key can be used for the ignition, as well as the driver’s door lock and storage compartments.


The key comes with a bar coded tag attached to the key ring. Keep this bar coded tag and give it to your dealer if a new key needs to be made. The vehicle has the PASS-Key® III vehicle theft system. The key has a transponder in the key head that matches a decoder in the vehicle’s instrument panel. The key will have PK3 stamped on it. If a replacement key or an additional key is needed, it must be purchased from your dealer.


Any new PASS-Key® III key must be programmed before it will start the vehicle. See PASS-Key® III on page 2-18 for more information on programming a new key. In an emergency, contact Pontiac Roadside Assistance. See Roadside Assistance Program on page 7-6 for more information. Notice: you may have to damage the vehicle to get in. Be sure you have spare keys. If the vehicle has the OnStar ® system with an active subscription, and the keys are locked inside the vehicle, OnStar ® may be able to send a command to unlock the vehicle. See OnStar® System on page 2-36 for more information.

be blocking the signal. Take a few steps to the left or right, hold the transmitter higher, and try again.

(cid:127) Remote Keyless Entry System Operation The vehicle’s doors can be locked and unlocked, the trunk can be unlatched from about 3 feet (1 m) up to 60 feet (18 m) away with the remote keyless entry transmitter. There are other conditions which may affect the performance of the transmitter, see Remote Keyless Entry System on page 2-4 for more information.


/ (Remote Start): If your vehicle has this feature, it may be started from outside the vehicle using the Remote Keyless Entry transmitter. Your remote keyless entry transmitter with the remote start button provides an increased range of operation. You can start your vehicle from an average range of 492 feet (150 m) away. However the range may be less while the vehicle is running. As a result, you may need to be closer to your vehicle to turn it off, than you were to turn it on. See “Remote Vehicle Start” following for more detailed information. Q (Lock): Press the lock button to lock all the doors. If enabled through the Driver Information Center (DIC), the parking lamps may flash once and the horn may chirp to indicate locking has occurred. Pressing the lock button may arm the content theft-deterrent system. See Content Theft-Deterrent on page 2-17 for more information.

" (Unlock): Press the unlock button one time to unlock the driver’s door. Press the unlock button again within five seconds to unlock the other doors. The interior lights will come on and stay on for 20 seconds or until the ignition is turned on. If enabled through the DIC, the parking lamps will flash once to indicate unlocking has occurred. Pressing the lock button on the remote keyless entry transmitter will disarm the content-theft deterrent system. See Content Theft-Deterrent on page 2-17 for more details. V (Trunk Release): Press this button to release the trunk lid. The transaxle must be in PARK (P) for this feature to operate. L (Remote Alarm): Press the remote alarm button to activate an alarm. The ignition must be in off or accessory for the remote alarm to work. When the remote alarm button is pressed the headlamps will flash and the horn will sound repeatedly for two minutes. The alarm will turn off when the ignition is moved to run or the remote alarm button is pressed again.


The vehicle may have Remote Lock/Unlock Confirmation. This feature provides feedback that a command has been received by the vehicle. The headlamps will flash and the horn may sound briefly. See “Remote Lock Feedback” under DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49 or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57 for programming information. Matching Transmitter(s) to Your Vehicle Each remote keyless entry transmitter is uniquely coded to prevent another transmitter from unlocking the vehicle. If a transmitter is lost or stolen, a replacement can be purchased through your dealer. Remember to bring any additional transmitters so they can also be re-coded to match the new transmitter. Once your dealer has coded the new transmitter, the lost transmitter cannot unlock the vehicle. The vehicle can have a maximum of four transmitters coded to it.

Battery Replacement Under normal use, the battery in the remote keyless entry transmitter should last about four years. If the battery is weak the transmitter will not work within its normal range. It is probably time to change the battery if you have to be very close to the vehicle before the transmitter works. Notice: When replacing the battery, use care not to touch any of the circuitry. Static from your body transferred to these surfaces may damage the transmitter.


To replace the battery do the following: 1. Insert a flat object with a thin edge into the notch,


located below the trunk release button, and pry the front and back apart.


2. Remove the old battery, but do not use a metal


object to do this.


3. Slide the new battery into the transmitter with the positive side of the battery facing up. Use a type CR2032 battery, or equivalent type.


4. Snap the front and the back of the transmitter


together.


5. Test the operation of the transmitter with the


vehicle.

Remote Vehicle Start Your vehicle may have a remote starting feature. This feature allows you to start the engine from outside of the vehicle. It also starts up the vehicle’s heating or air conditioning systems and rear window defogger. When the remote start system is active and the vehicle has an automatic climate control system, it will automatically regulate the inside temperature. Normal operation of the system will return after the key is turned to the on position. Laws in some communities may restrict the use of remote starters, for example, requiring a person using remote start to have the vehicle in view when doing so. Check local regulations for any requirements on remote starting of vehicles. Do not use the remote start feature if your vehicle is low on fuel. Your vehicle may run out of fuel.


/ (Remote Start): Press the lock button and then press this button to use the remote start feature. To start the vehicle using the remote start feature, do the following: 1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle. 2. Press the transmitter’s lock button, release it and then immediately press and hold the transmitter’s remote start button until the vehicle’s turn signal lights flash or for at least four seconds. The vehicle’s doors will be locked.


3. When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps will turn on and remain on while the vehicle is running, and the DIC will display REMOTE START ACTIVE PRESS HAZARD SWITCH TO CANCEL when the vehicle starts.


4. If it is your first remote start since last driving,


repeat these steps while the engine is still running for a 10 minute time extension.


When you enter the vehicle during a remote start, and the engine is still running, turn the key to the RUN position to drive the vehicle.

The remote start feature will not operate if the key is in the ignition, a door is open or the hood is not closed. The remote start feature will not operate if there is an emission control system malfunction. Also, the engine will turn off during a remote vehicle start if the coolant temperature gets too high or the oil pressure gets low. If a remote start is attempted and unsuccessful, the Driver Information Center (DIC) will display REMOTE START DISABLED.


If the vehicle is left running it will automatically shut off after 10 minutes unless a time extension has been done. To manually shut off a remote start, do any of the following: (cid:127) Aim the remote keyless entry transmitter at the vehicle and press the remote start button until the parking lamps turn off. Turn on the hazards warning flashers. Turn the ignition switch on and then off.


The remote start feature provides two separate starts, each with 10 minutes of engine running, or it provides one start with 10 minutes of engine running which may be extended by 10 more minutes. If you press and release the transmitter lock button and then press and hold the remote start button, on the keyless entry transmitter, again before the first 10 minutes of the engine running time has expired, 10 minutes are added to the remaining minutes. For example, if the lock and then the remote start buttons are pressed again after five minutes of the engine run time, 10 minutes are added and you now have 15 minutes of the engine running. The added 10 minutes is considered a second start. Once two remote starts or a single start with a time extension have been provided, the vehicle must be started normally with the ignition key to get more remote starts.

(cid:127) (cid:127) There are several ways to lock and unlock the vehicle. From the outside, use the key or remote keyless entry transmitter. From the inside, use the manual or power door locks.


To manually lock or unlock the doors from inside the vehicle, push down or pull up on the door lock pin located on the top of each door panel.


Doors and Locks Door Locks

Unlocked doors can be dangerous.


(cid:127) Passengers — especially children — can


easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked. So, wear safety belts properly and lock the doors whenever you drive.


(cid:127) Young children who get into unlocked


vehicles may be unable to get out. A child can be overcome by extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Always lock your vehicle whenever you leave it.


(cid:127) Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked door when you slow down or stop your vehicle. Locking your doors can help prevent this from happening.

Power Door Locks


To lock or unlock all doors from inside the vehicle, use the power door lock switch located on either front door.


Driver’s Side


Move the switch on the driver’s door to the right to lock or to the left to unlock the doors. Move the switch on the passenger’s door to the left to lock or to the right to unlock the doors. If the vehicle has the content theft-deterrent system, the vehicle may be programmed to arm the system with the power door lock switch. See “Lock Switch Arm” under DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49 or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57 for more information on programming the system.


Delayed Locking This feature delays the locking of the vehicle’s doors for five seconds after the last door is closed. Two chimes will sound when the power door lock switch or the LOCK button on the remote keyless entry transmitter is pressed when a door is open. The chimes indicate that the delayed locking feature is on. The doors can be locked immediately by pressing the power door lock switch or the LOCK button on the transmitter a second time. The delayed locking feature will not activate when the ignition is in RUN or ACC. You can program this feature on or off through the Driver Information Center (DIC), if equipped. See “Personal Programming Mode Screens” under DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49
or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57.

Programmable Automatic Door Locks The vehicle’s doors are programmed from the factory to lock when the shift lever is moved out of PARK (P), except in REVERSE (R), and to unlock while the shift lever is moved into PARK (P). If someone needs to get in or out of the vehicle after the doors have been locked, place the shift lever into PARK (P). You may also unlock all doors using the power door lock switch or unlock one door using the inside manual door lock. To program other door locking/unlocking combinations, see “Personal Programming Mode Screens” under DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49 or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57.


Lockout Protection The lockout protection feature makes it more difficult to lock the key in the vehicle. If the driver’s door is open while the key is in the ignition, the door cannot be locked with the power door lock switch. This feature cannot guarantee that you will never be locked out of the vehicle. If the key is not left in the ignition, or, if the manual door lock pin is used, the key could still be locked inside the vehicle. Always remember to take the key with you. To turn this feature on or off see “Personal Programming Mode Screens” under DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49 or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57.

Trunk Lock To unlock the trunk from the outside, insert the key into the lock on the trunk and turn it clockwise. If the battery is dead or extremely low, the trunk can not be opened with the remote keyless entry transmitter or remote trunk release. The open trunk symbol on the transmitter can also be used. See Remote Keyless Entry System Operation on page 2-5 for more information. The ignition must be off, or the transaxle must be in PARK (P), in order for the trunk to open.


Trunk


{CAUTION:


It can be dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come into your vehicle. You cannot see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the trunk lid open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the trunk lid:


(cid:127) Make sure all other windows are shut. (cid:127) Turn the fan on your heating or cooling


system to its highest speed and select the control setting that will force outside air into your vehicle. See Climate Control System in the Index. If you have air outlets on or under the instrument panel, open them all the way.

(cid:127) Remote Trunk Release This feature is used to unlock the trunk from inside the vehicle using the power door lock switch.


Press and hold the driver’s side power door lock switch to the left, or the passenger’s side power door lock switch to the right to unlock the trunk.


Driver’s Side


The vehicle must be in PARK (P) to release the trunk lid.

Emergency Trunk Release Handle Notice: Using the emergency trunk release handle as a tie-down or anchor point when securing items in the trunk may damage it. Use the emergency trunk release handle only to help you open the trunk lid.


There is a glow-in-the-dark emergency trunk release handle located on the trunk latch of the trunk lid. This handle will glow following exposure to light. If ever needed, pull the emergency trunk release handle to open the trunk from the inside.


Windows


{CAUTION:


Leaving children, helpless adults, or pets in a vehicle with the windows closed is dangerous. They can be overcome by the extreme heat and suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child, a helpless adult, or a pet alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather.

Power Windows


Use the switches on the driver’s door armrest to operate each of the windows.


Push the switch rearward or forward to open or close the window. The top switches operate the front windows, and the bottom switches operate the rear windows. Each passenger door also has a switch that operates that window. The power window switches only work if the ignition is on or in ACC, or while Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. See Retained Accessory Power (RAP) on page 2-22 for more information.

Express-Down Window The driver’s window switch has an express-down feature. Tap the switch rearward, and the driver’s window will open a small amount. If the switch is fully depressed rearward and released, the window will go all the way down. To stop the window while it is lowering, press the front of the switch. To raise the window, press and hold the front of the switch. Window Lock-Out The driver’s window switch includes a lock-out feature located above the power window switches on the driver’s door armrest. Move the switch to the right to prevent the passengers sitting in the rear from using their window switches. The driver can still control all the windows with the lock on. Move the switch to the left to disengage the lock-out feature.


Sun Visors To help block out glare, pull the sun visors down. Pull on the inside edges of the sun visors to swing them from the front windshield to the side window.


Visor Vanity Mirror Raise the cover on the top of the sun visor to expose the vanity mirror. If the vehicle has lighted vanity mirrors, the lamps come on when the cover is opened. Theft-Deterrent Systems Vehicle theft is big business, especially in some cities. Although the vehicle has a number of theft-deterrent features, nothing that is put on the vehicle can make it impossible to steal.


Content Theft-Deterrent The vehicle has a content theft-deterrent alarm system.


A red light located on top of the instrument panel, toward the center of the vehicle and near the windshield, will flash slowly when the system is armed.


The theft-deterrent alarm system needs to be activated through the Driver’s Information Center (DIC). See “Theft Deterrent” under the Personal Programming Mode Screens in DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49 or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57. While armed, the doors will not unlock with the power door lock switch. The remote alarm will sound if someone tampers with the trunk, enters the vehicle without using the remote keyless entry transmitter or key to unlock the doors, or turns the ignition on without the proper key. The horn will sound and the headlamps will flash for up to two minutes. The system will also cut off the fuel supply, preventing the vehicle from being driven. Arming with the Power Lock Switch The vehicle’s content theft-deterrent alarm system can be activated when the key is removed from the ignition and the power door lock switch of either the driver’s or front passenger’s door is used to lock the vehicle. The door needs to be in the open position when pressing the power door lock switch. The alarm system will not activate if the door is closed and the power door lock switch is pressed. This system can be activated through the Driver’s Information Center (DIC). See “Lock Switch Arm” under the Personal Programming Mode Screens in DIC Controls and Displays (Base Level DIC) on page 3-49
or DIC Controls and Displays (Uplevel DIC with Trip Computer) on page 3-57.

When the doors are locked using the power door lock switch of either front door, the red light, on top of the instrument panel will start flashing to indicate the system is arming. After all the doors are closed there will be a time delay and then the red light will begin to flash at a very slow rate indicating the sytem is armed. Arming with the Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter The alarm system will arm when the remote keyless entry transmitter is used to lock the doors after the key is removed from the ignition. The red light will come on to indicate that the system is arming. After all doors are closed and locked, and after a time delay, the red light will begin flashing at a very slow rate to show the system is armed. Arming Confirmation A red light located on top of the instrument panel, towards the center of the vehicle and near the windshield, will flash slowly to confirm when the system is armed.


Disarming with the Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter The alarm system will disarm when the remote keyless entry transmitter is used to unlock the doors. The red light will go out to show that the system is disarmed. Disarming with Your Key The alarm system will disarm when the key is used to unlock the doors. The red light will stop flashing when the system is disarmed. PASS-Key® III Operation


The vehicle is equipped with PASS-Key® III (Personalized Automotive Security System) theft-deterrent system. PASS-Key® III is a passive theft-deterrent system. This means nothing special needs to be done to arm or disarm the system. It works when the key is inserted or removed from the ignition.


PASS-Key III® uses a transponder in the ignition key that matches a decoder in the vehicle. When the PASS-Key® III system senses that the wrong key has been inserted into the ignition, it shuts down the vehicle’s starter and fuel systems. The starter will not work and fuel will stop flowing to the engine. If someone tries to start the vehicle again with the wrong key, the vehicle will not start. Anyone using a trial-and-error method to start the vehicle will be discouraged to do so because of the high number of electrical key codes.

When trying to start the vehicle, if the engine does not start and the STARTING DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM warning message on the Driver Information Center (DIC) comes on, the key may have a damaged transponder. Turn the ignition off and try again. If the engine still does not start, and the key appears to be undamaged, try another ignition key. At this time, you may also want to check the fuse. See Fuses and Circuit Breakers on page 5-103. If the engine still does not start with the other key, the vehicle needs service. If the vehicle does start, the first key may be faulty. See your dealer who can service the PASS-Key® III to have a new key made. In an emergency, contact Pontiac Roadside Assistance. See Roadside Assistance Program on page 7-6 for more information. It is possible for the PASS-Key® III decoder to accept the transponder value of a new or replacement key. Up to 10 additional keys may be programmed for the vehicle. The following procedure is for programming additional keys only. If all the programmed keys are lost or do not operate, see your dealer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key® III to have keys made and programmed to the system.


If the keys are lost or damaged, only a GM dealer can service PASS-Key® III to have new keys made. To program additional keys, two driver’s keys are needed.


Canadian Owners: If you lose or damage your keys, only a GM dealer can service PASS-Key® III to have new keys made. To program additional keys you will need two current driver’s keys. You must add a step to the following procedure. After Step 2, repeat Steps 1 and 2 with the second current driver’s key. Then continue with Step 3. To program the new key do the following: 1. Verify that the new key has PK3 stamped on it. 2. Insert the master key in the ignition and start


the engine. If the engine will not start, see your dealer for service.


3. After the engine has started, turn the key to OFF,


and remove the key.


4. Insert the key to be programmed and turn it to RUN


within five seconds of removing the original key.

5. The SECURITY DISABLED DUE TO THEFT


SYSTEM warning message on the DIC will turn off, once the key has been programmed. It may not be apparent that the SECURITY DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM warning message went on due to how quickly the key is programmed.


6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 if additional keys are to


be programmed.


If the SECURITY DISABLED DUE TO THEFT SYSTEM warning message appears and stays on the DIC while the vehicle is being driven, the engine will be able to be restarted if it is turned off. Your PASS-Key® III system, however, is not working properly and must be serviced by your dealer. The vehicle is not protected by the PASS-Key® III system at this time. If the PASS-Key® III key is lost or stolen, see your dealer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key® III to have a new key made.


Starting and Operating Your Vehicle


New Vehicle Break-In Notice: Your vehicle does not need an elaborate break-in. But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines: (cid:127) Do not drive at any one speed — fast or slow — for the first 500 miles (805 km). Do not make full-throttle starts.


(cid:127) Avoid making hard stops for the first


200 miles (322 km) or so. During this time your new brake linings are not yet broken in. Hard stops with new linings can mean premature wear and earlier replacement. Follow this breaking-in guideline every time you get new brake linings.


(cid:127) Do not tow a trailer during break-in. See Towing


a Trailer on page 4-40 for more information.

ACC (ACCESSORY): This position allows things like the radio and windshield wipers to operate while the engine is off. R (RUN): This position is where the key returns to after the vehicle is started. With the engine off, the RUN position displays some of the warning and indicator lights. / (START): This position starts the engine. Let go of the key when the engine starts. The key will return to the RUN position for normal driving. A continuous warning chime will sound and a KEY IN IGNITION warning message will display on the Driver Information Center (DIC) if the key is in the ignition in OFF or ACC and the driver’s door is opened. Retained Accessory Power (RAP) If the vehicle has Retained Accessory Power (RAP), certain features will continue to operate for up to 10 minutes after the ignition key is turned to OFF unless a door is opened.


Ignition Positions The ignition switch is located on the instrument panel, to the right of the steering column.


There are four different positions. Insert the key in the ignition and turn it to the right for each position.


9 (OFF): This position locks the ignition, steering wheel and transaxle. It is a theft-deterrent feature. This is the only position from which the key can be removed. Notice: Using a tool to force the key from the ignition switch could cause damage or break the key. Use the correct key and turn the key only with your hand. Make sure the key is all the way in. If it is, turn the steering wheel left and right while you turn the key hard. If none of this works, then your vehicle needs service.

Starting Your Engine Move your shift lever to PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). The engine will not start in any other position — that is a safety feature. To restart when you are already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. Notice: Shifting into PARK (P) with the vehicle moving could damage the transaxle. Shift into PARK (P) only when your vehicle is stopped. 1. With your foot off the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition key to START. When the engine starts, let go of the key. The idle speed will go down as the engine gets warm.


Notice: Holding your key in START for longer than 15 seconds at a time will cause your battery to be drained much sooner. And the excessive heat can damage your starter motor. Wait about 15 seconds between each try to help avoid draining your battery or damaging your starter. 2. If the engine does not start within 10 seconds, hold your key in START for about 10 seconds at a time until the engine starts. Wait about 15 seconds between each try.


When your engine has run for about 10 seconds to warm up, your vehicle is ready to be driven. Do not race your engine when it is cold. If the weather is below freezing (32°F or 0°C), let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up.


3. If your engine still will not start, or starts but then stops, it could be flooded with too much gasoline. Try pushing your accelerator pedal all the way to the floor and holding it there as you hold the key in START for about three seconds. If the vehicle starts briefly but then stops again, do the same thing. This time keep the pedal down for five or six seconds to clear the extra gasoline from the engine. After waiting about 15 seconds, repeat the normal starting procedure.


Notice: Your engine is designed to work with the electronics in your vehicle. If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. Before adding electrical equipment, check with your dealer. If you do not, your engine might not perform properly.

Engine Coolant Heater The vehicle may be equipped with an engine coolant heater. In very cold weather, 0°F (−18°C) or colder, the engine coolant heater can help. The vehicle will start easier and get better fuel economy during engine warm-up. Usually, the coolant heater should be plugged in a minimum of four hours prior to starting the vehicle. At temperatures above 32°F (0°C), use of the coolant heater is not required. Your vehicle may also have an internal thermostat in the plug end of the cord. This will prevent operation of the engine coolant heater when the temperature is at or above 0°F (−18°C) as noted on the cord. To Use the Engine Coolant Heater 1. Turn off the engine. 2. Open the hood and unwrap the electrical cord. The


cord is located above the engine air cleaner/filter. See Engine Compartment Overview on page 5-12
for more information on location.


3. Plug it into a normal, grounded 110-volt AC outlet.


{CAUTION:


Plugging the cord into an ungrounded outlet could cause an electrical shock. Also, the wrong kind of extension cord could overheat and cause a fire. You could be seriously injured. Plug the cord into a properly grounded three-prong 110-volt AC outlet. If the cord will not reach, use a heavy-duty three-prong extension cord rated for at least 15 amps.


4. Before starting the engine, be sure to unplug and


store the cord as it was before, making sure to keep it away from moving engine parts. If this is not done, the cord could be damaged.


How long should the coolant heater be kept plugged in? The answer depends on the outside temperature, the kind of oil that is in the vehicle, and some other things. Instead of trying to list everything here, we ask that you contact your dealer in the area where the vehicle will be parked. The dealer can give you the best advice for that particular area.

Automatic Transaxle Operation The shift lever for the automatic transaxle is located on the console between the seats. Maximum engine speed is limited when the vehicle is in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) to protect driveline components from improper operation.


There are several different positions for the shift lever.


PARK (P): This position locks the front wheels. It is the best position to use when the engine is started because the vehicle cannot move easily.


{CAUTION:


It is dangerous to get out of your vehicle if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll. Do not leave your vehicle when the engine is running unless you have to. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. You or others could be injured. To be sure your vehicle will not move, even when you are on fairly level ground, always set your parking brake and move the shift lever to PARK (P). See Shifting Into Park (P) on page 2-31. If you are pulling a trailer, see Towing a Trailer on page 4-40.


Make sure the shift lever is fully in PARK (P) before starting the engine. The vehicle has an automatic transaxle shift lock control system. The regular brakes must be fully applied and the shift control button, located on the front of the shift lever, must be pressed before the vehicle can be shifted from PARK (P) when the ignition is in RUN.

If the vehicle cannot be shifted out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever by pushing it all the way into PARK (P) while keeping the brake pedal pushed down. Release the shift lever button. Then move the shift lever out of PARK (P), being sure to press the shift lever button. See Shifting Out of Park (P) on page 2-32.


REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up. Notice: Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage the transaxle. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Shift to REVERSE (R) only after your vehicle is stopped. To rock the vehicle back and forth to get out of snow, ice or sand without damaging the transaxle, see If You Are Stuck: In Sand, Mud, Ice or Snow on page 4-32.


NEUTRAL (N): In this position, the engine does not connect with the wheels. To restart when the vehicle is already moving, use NEUTRAL (N) only. Also, use NEUTRAL (N) when the vehicle is being towed.


{CAUTION:


Shifting into a drive gear while your engine is running at high speed is dangerous. Unless your foot is firmly on the brake pedal, your vehicle could move very rapidly. You could lose control and hit people or objects. Do not shift into a drive gear while your engine is running at high speed.


Notice: Shifting out of PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) with the engine racing may damage the transaxle. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Be sure the engine is not racing when shifting your vehicle.


AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D): This position is for normal driving. If the vehicle needs more power for passing, and it is: (cid:127) Going less than 35 mph (55 km/h), push the


accelerator pedal about halfway down.


(cid:127) Going about 35 mph (55 km/h) or more, push


the accelerator pedal all the way down.

If your vehicle seems to start up rather


The vehicle will shift down to the next gear and have more power. Notice: slowly or not shift gears when you go faster, and you continue to drive your vehicle that way, you could damage the transaxle. Have your vehicle serviced right away. You can drive in SECOND (2) when you are driving less than 35 mph (55 km/h) and AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D) for higher speeds until then.


THIRD (3): This position is also used for normal driving, but it offers more power and lower fuel economy than AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D). Here are some times THIRD (3) could be used instead of AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D): (cid:127) When driving on hilly, winding roads. (cid:127) When towing a trailer, so there is less shifting


between gears.


(cid:127) When going down a steep hill. (cid:127) When driving in non-highway scenarios


(i.e. city streets, etc.).


SECOND (2): This position gives the vehicle more power but lower fuel economy than THIRD (3). SECOND (2) can be used on hills. It can help control the vehicle’s speed as it goes down steep mountain roads, but then you would also want to use the brakes off and on. Notice: Driving in SECOND (2) for more than 25 miles (40 km) or at speeds over 55 mph (90 km/h) may damage the transaxle. Also, shifting into SECOND (2) at speeds above 65 mph (105 km/h) can cause damage. Drive in THIRD (3) or AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D) instead of SECOND (2).


FIRST (1): This position gives the vehicle even more power but lower fuel economy than SECOND (2). It can be used on very steep hills, or in deep snow or mud. If the shift lever is moved to FIRST (1), the transaxle will not shift into first gear until the vehicle is going slowly enough. Notice: Spinning the tires or holding the vehicle in one place on a hill using only the accelerator pedal may damage the transaxle. If you are stuck, do not spin the tires. When stopping on a hill, use the brakes to hold the vehicle in place.

Performance Shifting with TAP-Shift™


If the vehicle is equipped with the 3800 V6
Supercharged engine, it may have a console gearshift with a MANUAL (M) position.


While in the MANUAL (M) position, the paddles, located on the steering wheel, can be used to up-shift or down-shift the transaxle, under certain circumstances.


While in the MANUAL (M) mode, push either paddle once to up-shift to the next gear. Pull either paddle once to down-shift to the next gear.


The other gearshift positions available are PARK (P), REVERSE (R), NEUTRAL (N) and AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D), and operate as explained earlier in this section.


To fully use the system, select MANUAL (M) while stopped, with the engine running. The vehicle will begin moving in first gear upon acceleration. For better control in icy or slippery conditions, the vehicle may start out in second gear, rather than first gear.

The up-shift indicator light on the instrument panel cluster, or the up-shift symbol on the Head-Up Display (HUD), if equipped, is given as a prompt to use the TAP-Shift ™ paddle.


The up-shift indicator light will only appear in the instrument panel cluster if the HUD is off or if the vehicle does not have HUD. This prompt to up-shift, as needed, will be given throughout acceleration. If up-shifting does not occur when prompted, the vehicle speed will be limited to protect the engine.


Press the accelerator while driving in the highest gear (fourth gear) which is between 20 and 50 mph to make the transaxle automatically down-shift. As you’re speed gets closer to 50 mph, more effort will be required to press the acclerator. At 50 mph, even with the accelerator fully depressed, the transaxle will always remain in the 4th gear. The transaxle will also automatically down-shift as the vehicle decelerates and comes to a stop. When a paddle is pushed or pulled a chime will sound when the vehicle cannot respond to a transaxle gear change. The system will not allow either an up-shift or a down-shift if the vehicle speed is too fast or too slow, nor will it allow a start from THIRD (3) or higher gear. The MANUAL (M) gear can also be selected while the vehicle is already moving. The current transaxle position will continue to be displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC) and HUD, if equipped.

Parking Brake


The parking brake is located to the left of the brake pedal near the driver’s door. To set the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with the right foot. Push down on the parking brake pedal, with the left foot.


To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down with the right foot and push the parking brake pedal with the left foot. When the left foot is lifted, the parking brake pedal will lift to the released position. A warning chime will sound if the parking brake is set, the ignition is on, and the shift lever is not in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N).


The brake light will also appear on the instrument panel cluster when the parking brake is set. It will stay on if the parking brake does not release fully. The PARKING BRAKE ON message will also appear in the Driver Information Center (DIC) when the parking brake is set. Notice: Driving with the parking brake on can overheat the brake system and cause premature wear or damage to brake system parts. Verify that the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light is off before driving. If the vehicle is towing a trailer and parked on a hill, see Towing a Trailer on page 4-40. That section shows what to do first to keep the trailer from moving.

Shifting Into Park (P)

To be sure your vehicle will not move, even when you are on fairly level ground, use the steps that follow. If you are pulling a trailer, see Towing a Trailer on page 4-40.


Leaving Your Vehicle With the Engine Running


{CAUTION:


It can be dangerous to leave your vehicle with the engine running. Your vehicle could move suddenly if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set. And, if you leave the vehicle with the engine running, it could overheat and even catch fire. You or others could be injured. Do not leave your vehicle with the engine running.


1. Hold the brake pedal down with your right foot and


set the parking brake.


2. Move the shift lever into PARK (P) by holding in the button on the shift lever and pushing the shift lever all the way toward the front of the vehicle.


3. Turn the ignition key to OFF. 4. Remove the key and take it with you. If you can


leave your vehicle with the ignition key in your hand, your vehicle is in PARK (P).


If you have to leave your vehicle with the engine running, be sure your vehicle is in PARK (P) and your parking brake is firmly set before you leave it. After you have moved the shift lever into PARK (P), hold the regular brake pedal down. Then, see if you can move the shift lever away from PARK (P) without first pushing the button. If you can, it means that the shift lever was not fully locked in PARK (P).

Torque Lock If you are parking on a hill and you do not shift your transaxle into PARK (P) properly, the weight of the vehicle may put too much force on the parking pawl in the transaxle. You may find it difficult to pull the shift lever out of PARK (P). This is called “torque lock.” To prevent torque lock, set the parking brake and then shift into PARK (P) properly before you leave the driver’s seat. To find out how, see Shifting Into Park (P) on page 2-31. When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever out of PARK (P) before you release the parking brake. If torque lock does occur, you may need to have another vehicle push your vehicle a little uphill to take some of the pressure from the parking pawl in the transaxle, so you can pull the shift lever out of PARK (P).


Shifting Out of Park (P) The vehicle has an automatic transaxle shift lock control system which locks the shift lever in PARK (P) when the ignition is in OFF. In addition, the regular brakes must be fully applied before shifting from PARK (P) while the ignition is in RUN. See Automatic Transaxle Operation on page 2-25. If the vehicle cannot be shifted out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever and push the shift lever all the way up into PARK (P) as brake application is maintained. Then move the shift lever into the desired gear. If the brake pedal is held down but the vehicle still cannot be shifted out of PARK (P), try this: 1. Turn the key to ACC. There is no shift interlock in


this key position.


2. Apply and hold the brake until the end of Step 4. 3. Shift the transaxle to NEUTRAL (N). 4. Start the vehicle and then shift to the desired


transaxle gear.


5. Have the system fixed as soon as possible.

Parking Over Things That Burn


Engine Exhaust


{CAUTION:


Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you cannot see or smell. It can cause unconsciousness and death. You might have exhaust coming in if:


(cid:127) Your exhaust system sounds strange or


different.


(cid:127) Your vehicle gets rusty underneath. (cid:127) Your vehicle was damaged in a collision. (cid:127) Your vehicle was damaged when driving over high points on the road or over road debris.


(cid:127) Repairs were not done correctly. (cid:127) Your vehicle or exhaust system had been


modified improperly.


If you ever suspect exhaust is coming into your vehicle:


(cid:127) Drive it only with all the windows down to


blow out any CO; and


(cid:127) Have your vehicle fixed immediately.

Things that can burn could touch hot exhaust parts under your vehicle and ignite. Do not park over papers, leaves, dry grass or other things that can burn.

Running Your Engine While You Are Parked It is better not to park with the engine running. But if you ever have to, here are some things to know.


{CAUTION:


Idling the engine with the climate control system off could allow dangerous exhaust into your vehicle. See the earlier caution under Engine Exhaust on page 2-33. Also, idling in a closed-in place can let deadly carbon monoxide (CO) into your vehicle even if the climate control fan is at the highest setting. One place this can happen is a garage. Exhaust — with CO — can come in easily. NEVER park in a garage with the engine running. Another closed-in place can be a blizzard. See Winter Driving on page 4-28.

Mirrors


Outside Power Mirrors


Manual Rearview Mirror Use the control located at the bottom to change the mirror from the day to the night position. To reduce the glare of headlamps from behind, turn the control counterclockwise. To return the mirror back to the day position, turn the control clockwise.


Manual Rearview Mirror with OnStar® If the vehicle has this feature, use the control, located at the bottom of the mirror, to change the mirror from the day to the night position. To reduce the glare of headlamps from behind, turn the control counterclockwise. To return the mirror to the day position, turn the control clockwise. There are also three OnStar® buttons located at the bottom of the mirror face. See your dealer for more information on the system and how to subscribe to OnStar®. See OnStar® System on page 2-36 for more information about the services OnStar® provides.


The power mirror controls are located near the driver’s window, on the driver’s door armrest.


Move the top control to the left to adjust the driver’s side outside mirror. Move the control to the right to adjust the passenger’s side mirror. The center position turns the power control off and will not allow the mirrors to move if the control pad is touched. The round control pad adjusts the angle of the selected outside mirror. Press the arrows on the control pad to adjust the angle of the mirror. Adjust each mirror so that the sides and the area behind the vehicle can be seen.
