Normal operation S35-D-110201-3C7B8B73-5F7B-44E6-B702-4024AAD51CEB The ABS operates at speeds above 3 to 6 MPH (5 to 10 km/h). The speed varies according to road conditions. When the ABS senses that one or more wheels are close to locking up, the actuator rapidly applies and releases hydraulic pressure. This action is similar to pumping the brakes very quickly. You may feel a pulsation in the brake pedal and hear a noise from under the hood or feel a vibration from the actuator when it is operating. This is normal and indicates that the ABS is operating properly. However, the pulsa- tion may indicate that road conditions are hazardous and extra care is required while driving. for safety. Tire type and condition may also affect braking effectiveness. — When replacing tires, install the specified size of tires on all four wheels. — When installing a spare tire, make sure that it is the proper size and type as specified on the Tire and Loading Information label. See “Tire and loading information label” in the “9. Technical and consumer infor- mation” section of this manual. — For detailed information, see “Wheels and tires” in the “8. Maintenance and do-it-yourself” section of this manual. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) controls the brakes so the wheels do not lock during hard braking or when braking on slippery surfaces. The system detects the rotation speed at each wheel and varies the brake fluid pressure to prevent each wheel from locking and sliding. By preventing each wheel from locking, the system helps the driver maintain steering control and helps to minimize swerving and spinning on 5-28 Starting and driving slippery surfaces. If the computer senses a malfunction, it switches the ABS off and illuminates the ABS warning light on the instrument panel. The brake system then oper- ates normally, but without anti-lock assistance. [ Edit: 2011/ 6/ 22 Model: S35-D ] VEHICLE DYNAMIC CONTROL (VDC) SYSTEM S35-D-110201-D6FDB021-412C-46AD-9A43-77A8616112D0 The Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system uses various sensors to monitor driver inputs and vehicle motion. Under certain driving con- ditions, the VDC system helps to perform the following functions. . Controls brake pressure to reduce wheel slip on one slipping drive wheel so power is transferred to a non slipping drive wheel on the same axle. . Controls brake pressure and engine output to reduce drive wheel slip based on vehicle speed (traction control function). . Controls brake pressure at individual wheels and engine output to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle in the following conditions: — understeer (vehicle tends to not follow the steered path despite increased steering input) — oversteer (vehicle tends to spin due to certain road or driving conditions). The VDC system can help the driver to maintain control of the vehicle, but it cannot prevent loss of vehicle control in all driving situations. When the VDC system operates, warning light so note the following: the VDC in the instrument panel flashes The road may be slippery or the system may determine some action is required to help Black plate (267,1) keep the vehicle on the steered path. . The VDC warning light flashes if this occurs. All other VDC functions are off, and the VDC warning light will not flash. The VDC system is automatically reset to on when the ignition switch is placed in the off position then back to the on position. See“Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) warning light” in the “2. Instruments and controls” section and “Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) off indicator light” in the “2. Instruments and controls” section. The VDC system is not a substitute for winter tires or tire chains on a snow covered road. This could adversely affect vehicle handling performance, and the VDC warning light may illuminate. If brake related parts such as brake pads, rotors and calipers are not NISSAN recommended or are extre- mely deteriorated, the VDC system may not operate properly and the VDC warning light may illumi- nate. If engine control related parts are not NISSAN recommended or are extremely deteriorated, the VDC warning light may illuminate. . When driving on extremely inclined surfaces such as higher banked corners, the VDC system may not operate properly and the VDC warn- ing light may illuminate. Do not drive on these types of roads. . When driving on an unstable sur- face such as a turntable, ferry, elevator or ramp, the VDC warning light may illuminate. This is not a malfunction. Restart the engine after driving onto a stable surface. Braking should be started sooner than on dry pave- ment. . Allow greater following distances on slippery roads. . Watch for slippery spots (glare ice). Do not use cruise control on slip- pery roads. . Snow can trap dangerous exhaust gases under your vehicle. How- ever, these tires will be substantially reduced in snowy and icy condi- tions. If you operate your vehicle on snowy or icy roads, NISSAN recommends the use of MUD & SNOW or ALL SEASON tires on all four wheels. Consult a NISSAN dealer for the tire type, size, speed rating and availability information. For additional traction on icy roads, studded tires may be used. However, some U.S. states and Canadian provinces prohibit their use. Check local, state and provincial laws before installing studded tires. Skid and traction capabilities of studded snow tires, on wet or dry surfaces, may be poorer than that of non-studded snow tires. Tire chains may be used. For details, see “Tire chains” in the “8. SPECIAL WINTER EQUIPMENT S35-D-110201-08727745-6DB3-41EB-A116-4A77713528D6 It is recommended that the following items be carried in the vehicle during winter: . A scraper and stiff-bristled brush to remove ice and snow from the windows and wiper blades. . A sturdy, flat board to be placed under the jack to give it firm support. . A shovel to dig the vehicle out of snow- drifts. . Extra window washer fluid to refill the reservoir tank. DRIVING ON SNOW OR ICE GUID-95DB7CAC-A319-4B34-942B-E334028E4579 WARNING . Wet ice (328F, 08C and freezing rain), very cold snow or ice can be slick and very hard to drive on. The vehicle will have much less traction or “grip” under these conditions. Try to avoid driving on wet ice until the road is salted or sanded. . Whatever the condition, drive with caution. Accelerate and slow down with care. Do not use your engine block heater with an ungrounded electrical sys- tem or a 2-pronged adapter. You can be seriously injured by an electrical shock if you use an ungrounded connection. . Disconnect and properly store the engine block heater cord before starting the engine. Damage to the cord could result in an electrical shock and can cause serious injury. . Use a heavy-duty 3-wire, 3-pronged extension cord rated for at least 10A. Plug the extension cord into a Ground Fault Interrupt (GFI) pro- tected, grounded 110-VAC outlet. Failure to use the proper extension cord or a grounded outlet can result in a fire or electrical shock and cause serious personal injury. ENGINE BLOCK HEATER (if so equipped) S35-D-110201-BD5F9528-DB57-4ECE-BF7C-C0FA0439CFC3 Engine block heaters are used to assist in cold temperature starting. The engine block heater should be used when the outside temperature is 208F (−78C) or lower. To use the engine block heater 1. Turn the engine off. 2. Plug the extension cord into a Ground Fault Interrupt (GFI) protected, grounded 110- volt AC (VAC) outlet. 5. The engine block heater must be plugged in for at least 2 - 4 hours, depending on outside temperatures, to properly warm the engine coolant. Use an appropriate timer to turn the engine block heater on. 6. It monitors tire pressure of all tires except the spare. When the low tire pressure warning light is lit and the CHECK TIRE PRESSURE warning (if so equipped) appears on the vehicle information display, one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. If the vehicle is being driven with low tire pressure, the TPMS will activate and warn you of it by the low tire pressure warning light. This system will activate only when the vehicle is driven at speeds above 16 MPH (25 km/h). For more details, see “Warning/indicator lights and audible reminders” in the “2. Instru- ments and controls” section and “Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)” in the “5. Starting and driving” section. WARNING If the low tire pressure warning light illuminates while driving, avoid sud- den steering maneuvers or abrupt braking, reduce vehicle speed, pull off the road to a safe location and stop the vehicle as soon as possi- ble. Driving with under-inflated tires 6-2 In case of emergency may permanently damage the tires and increase the likelihood of tire failure. Serious vehicle damage could occur and may lead to an accident and could result in serious personal injury. Check the tire pres- sure for all four tires. Adjust the tire pressure to the recommended COLD tire pressure shown on the Tire and Loading Information label to turn the low tire pressure warning light OFF. If you have a flat tire, replace it with a spare tire as soon as possi- ble. . When a spare tire is mounted or a wheel is replaced, the TPMS will not function and the low tire pressure warning light will flash for approxi- mately 1 minute. The light will remain on after 1 minute. Contact your NISSAN dealer as soon as possible for tire replacement and/ or system resetting. . Replacing tires with those not ori- ginally specified by NISSAN could affect the proper operation of the TPMS. . Do not inject any tire liquid or aerosol tire sealant into the tires, as this may cause a malfunction of the tire pressure sensors. CHANGING A FLAT TIRE If you have a flat tire, below. If the fluid should come into contact with anything, immediately flush the contacted area with water. . Keep the battery out of the reach of children. The booster battery must be rated at 12 volts. Cover the battery with a firmly wrung out moist cloth to reduce explosion hazard. 4. Connect jumper cables in the sequence as illustrated (*1 ? *2 ? *3 ? *4 ). For the vehicle equipped with Intelli- gent Key system: If the battery is discharged, the ignition switch cannot be moved from the LOCK position. Connect the jumper cables to the booster vehicle *B before turning the ignition switch. CAUTION . Always connect positive (+) to posi- tive (+) and negative (−) to body ground (for example, as illustrated), not to the battery. . Doors and engine hood: Check that all doors and the engine hood operate properly. Also latches lock securely. Lubricate ensure that all hinges, latch pins, rollers and links if necessary. Make sure that the secondary latch keeps the hood from opening when the primary latch is released. When driving in areas using road salt or other corrosive materials, check lubrication frequently. latches, 8-2 Maintenance and do-it-yourself [ Edit: 2011/ 6/ 22 Model: S35-D ] Black plate (299,1) Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) P (Park) position mechanism: On a fairly steep hill, check that the vehicle is held securely with the selector lever in the P (Park) position without applying any brakes. Parking brake: Check the parking brake operation regularly. The vehicle should be securely held on a fairly steep hill with only the parking brake applied. If the parking brake needs adjusted, see a NISSAN dealer. Seat belts: Check that all parts of the seat belt system (for example, buckles, anchors, adjusters and retractors) operate properly and smoothly, and are installed securely. Check the belt webbing for cuts, fraying, wear or damage. Seats: Check seat position controls such as seat adjusters, seatback recliner, etc. to ensure they operate smoothly and that all latches lock securely in every position. Check that the head restraints move up and down smoothly and that the locks (if so equipped) hold securely in all latched positions. Steering wheel: Check for changes in the steering conditions, such as excessive free play, hard steering or strange noises. Warning lights and chimes: Make sure that all warning lights and chimes are operating properly. Fluid leaks: Check under the vehicle for fuel, oil, water or other fluid leaks after the vehicle has been parked for a while. Water dripping from the air conditioner after use is normal. If you should notice any leaks or if gasoline fumes are evident, check for the cause and have it corrected immediately. Radiator and hoses: Check the front of the radiator and clean off any dirt, insects, leaves, etc., that may have accumulated. Make sure the hoses have no cracks, deformation, rot or loose connections. Underbody: The underbody is frequently ex- posed to corrosive substances such as those used on icy roads or to control dust. It is very important to remove these substances, other- wise rust will form on the floor pan, frame, fuel lines and around the exhaust system.
