Warning!

If the exterior lamp switch is set to U, 앫 the headlamps may switch off unexpect-

edly when the system senses bright ambient light, for example light from oncoming traffic

앫 the headlamps will not be automatically

switched on under foggy conditions

To minimize risk to you and to others, activate headlamps by turning exterior lamp switch to B when driving or when traffic and/or ambient lighting conditions require you to do so.

In low ambient lighting conditions, only switch from position U to B with the vehicle at a standstill in a safe location. Switching from U to B will briefly switch off the headlamps. Doing so while driving in low ambient lighting conditions may result in an accident.

The automatic headlamp feature is only an aid to the driver. The driver is responsible for the operation of the vehicle’s lights at all times.

왘 Turn the exterior lamp switch to

position U. With the starter switch in position 1 (컄 page 38), only the parking lamps will switch on and off automatically. When the engine is running, the low beam headlamps, the tail and parking lamps, the license plate lamps, and the side marker lamps will switch on and off automatically.

Daytime running lamp mode 왘 Turn the exterior lamp switch to

position M or U.

When the engine is running, the low beam headlamps are switched on. In low ambient light conditions, the following lamps will switch on additionally: 앫 Tail and parking lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps For nighttime driving you should turn the exterior lamp switch to position B to permit activation of the high beam head- lamps.

With the daytime running lamp mode activated and the exterior lamp switch in position M, the high beam head- lamps cannot be switched on. The high beam flasher is available at all times.

Canada only The daytime running lamp mode is manda- tory and therefore in a constant mode. When the engine is running and you shift from a driving position to position N or P, the low beam headlamps will switch off with a three-minute delay. When the engine is running and you 앫 turn the exterior lamp switch to position C, the parking lamps switch on additionally

USA only By default, the daytime running lamp mode is deactivated. Activate the daytime running lamp mode using the control system, see “Setting daytime running lamp mode (USA only)” (컄 page 182). When the engine is running, and you turn the exterior lamp switch to position C or B, the manual headlamp mode has priority over the daytime running lamp mode. The corresponding exterior lamps switch on (컄 page 58).

Locator lighting and night security illumination The locator lighting and the night security illumination are described in the “Control system” section, see “Setting locator light- ing” (컄 page 183) and “Setting night secu- rity illumination” (컄 page 184).

Fog lamps

Warning!

In low ambient lighting or foggy conditions, only switch from position U to B with the vehicle at a standstill in a safe location. Switching from U to B will briefly switch off the headlamps. Doing so while driving in low ambient lighting conditions may result in an accident.

Fog lamps will operate with the parking lamps and/or the low beam headlamps on. Fog lamps should only be used in conjunction with low beam headlamps. Consult your State or Province Motor Vehicle Regulations regarding permis- sible lamp operation.

Front fog lamps* 왘 Switch on the low beam headlamps

(컄 page 58).

왘 Pull out the exterior lamp switch to first

stop. The front fog lamps switch on. The green indicator lamp ‡ in the exterior lamp switch comes on (컄 page 147).

왘 Push in the exterior lamp switch.

The front fog lamps switch off. The green indicator lamp ‡ in the exterior lamp switch goes out.

Rear fog lamp (driver’s side only) 왘 Pull out the exterior lamp switch to

second stop. The rear fog lamp switches on. The yellow indicator lamp † in the exterior lamp switch comes on (컄 page 147).

If so equipped, the front fog lamps* will also switch on.

왘 Push in the exterior lamp switch to first

stop. The rear fog lamp switches off. The yellow indicator lamp † in the exterior lamp switch goes out. The front fog lamps* remain lit.

Switching on corner-illuminating front fog lamps 왘 Depending on whether you are turning left or right, switch on the left or right turn signal (컄 page 58). The respective front fog lamp comes on and illuminates the road onto which you are turning.

Corner-illuminating front fog lamps will only come on in low ambient lighting conditions. The corner-illuminating front fog lamps function is not available at a vehicle speed above 25 mph (40 km/h).

The corner-illuminating front fog lamps will come on automatically depending on the steering angle, even if you did not switch on either turn signal. If the corner-illuminating front fog lamps came on automatically, they will also go out automatically depending on the steering angle.

Switching off corner-illuminating front fog lamps The combination switch for the turn signal resets automatically after major steering wheel movements. This will switch off the corner-illuminating front fog lamps if they were activated by switching on the left or right turn signal. If the turn signal should stay on after mak- ing the turn, the turn signal and corner-illuminating front fog lamps can be switched off by returning the combination switch to its original position.

Driving rearward

Hazard warning flasher

The hazard warning flasher can be switched on at all times, even with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch. The hazard warning flasher switches on automatically when an air bag deploys. The hazard warning flasher switch is located on the upper part of the center console.

Switching on corner-illuminating front fog lamps 왘 Shift the automatic transmission to

reverse gear R (컄 page 198). The inverse front fog lamp comes on automatically depending on the steering direction and steering angle.

Switching off corner-illuminating front fog lamps 왘 Shift the automatic transmission to a

gear other than reverse gear R (컄 page 197). The respective front fog lamp goes out.

Interior lighting

The controls for interior lighting are locat- ed in the overhead control panel.

The interior lighting is factory-set to au- tomatic mode (컄 page 155).

With the hazard warning flasher activated and the combination switch set for either left or right turn, only the respective turn signals will operate when the ignition is switched on.

If the hazard warning flasher has been activated automatically, press hazard warning flasher switch 1 once to switch it off.

If a door remains open, the interior lamps switch off automatically after ap- proximately 5 minutes when the SmartKey is removed or in starter switch position 0. An interior lamp switched on manually does not go out automatically.

Door entry lamps

Cargo compartment lamp

The corresponding reading lamp comes on.

The corresponding reading lamp goes out.

The rear interior lighting is switched on and off using the button on the front overhead control panel (컄 page 154).

The corresponding door entry lamp comes on if a door is opened and if the interior lighting is switched to automatic mode. The entry lamp goes out automatically when the door is closed.

If you turn the SmartKey in the starter switch to position 0 or remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, the door entry lamps will remain lit for approximately 5 minutes.

The cargo compartment lamp comes on when the tailgate is opened. If you leave the tailgate open for an extend- ed period of time, the cargo compartment lamp will switch off automatically after ap- proximately 10 minutes.

You can modify the instrument cluster set- tings in the instrument cluster submenu of the control system (컄 page 178).

Warning!

If the instrument cluster or the multifunction display, or both, are inoperative or malfunc- tioning, warning messages will not be re- layed when potential danger exists. This may cause you and others to be unaware of certain risks, which may result in an acci- dent and/or personal injury.

Contact the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center as soon as possible.

Instrument cluster illumination

Use button 1 or 3 to adjust the illumina- tion brightness for the instrument cluster.

The instrument cluster illumination is dimmed or brightened automatically to suit ambient light conditions. The instrument cluster illumination will also be adjusted automatically when you switch on the vehicle’s exterior lamps.

To brighten illumination 왘 Press and hold button 3 until the

desired level of illumination is reached.

To dim illumination 왘 Press and hold button 1 until the

desired level of illumination is reached.

Outside temperature indicator

Make sure you are viewing the trip odome- ter display (컄 page 161). 왘 If it is not displayed, press button è or ÿ on the multifunction steering wheel (컄 page 162) repeatedly until the trip odometer appears in the multi- function display.

왘 Press and hold reset button 2

(컄 page 158) until the trip odometer is reset.

The red marking on the tachometer (컄 page 24) denotes excessive engine speed.

Avoid driving at excessive engine speeds, as it may result in serious engine damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

To help protect the engine, the fuel supply is interrupted if the engine is operated within the red marking.

Warning!

The outside temperature indicator is not de- signed to serve as an ice-warning device and is therefore unsuitable for that purpose.

Indicated temperatures just above the freez- ing point do not guarantee that the road sur- face is free of ice. The road may still be icy, especially in wooded areas or on bridges.

The outside temperature is indicated in the multifunction display (컄 page 161).

The temperature sensor is located in the front bumper area. Due to its location, the sensor can be affected by road or engine heat during idling or slow driving. This means that the accuracy of the displayed temperature can only be verified by com- parison to a thermometer placed next to the sensor, not by comparison to external displays (e.g. bank signs etc.). When moving the vehicle into colder ambi- ent temperatures (e.g. when leaving your garage), you will notice a delay before the lower temperature is displayed. A delay also occurs when ambient temper- atures rise. This prevents inaccurate tem- perature indications caused by heat radiated from the engine during idling or slow driving.

왔 Control system The control system is activated as soon as the SmartKey in the starter switch is turned to position 1 (컄 page 38) or as soon as the KEYLESS-GO start/stop but- ton* is in position 1 (컄 page 39). The con- trol system enables you to 앫 call up information about your vehicle 앫 change vehicle settings For example, you can use the control sys- tem to find out when your vehicle is next due for maintenance service, to set the language for messages in the instrument cluster display, and much more.

The displays for the audio systems (radio, CD player) will appear in English, regardless of the language selected.

Warning!

Multifunction display

A driver’s attention to the road and traffic conditions must always be his/her primary focus when driving.

For your safety and the safety of others, se- lecting features through the multifunction steering wheel should only be done by the driver when traffic and road conditions per- mit it to be done safely.

Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph (approximately 50 km/h), your vehicle is covering a distance of 44 feet (approximate- ly 14 m) every second.

The control system relays information to the multifunction display.

Multifunction steering wheel

The displays in the multifunction display and the settings in the control system are controlled by the buttons on the multifunc- tion steering wheel.

Pressing any of the buttons, except for the telephone buttons, on the multifunction steering wheel will alter what is shown in the multifunction display. The information available in the multifunc- tion display is arranged in menus, each containing a number of functions or sub- menus. The individual functions are then found within the relevant menu (radio or CD operations under AUDIO, for example). These functions serve to call up relevant information or to customize the settings for your vehicle.

In the Settings menu, instead of func- tions, you will find a number of submenus for calling up and changing settings. For in- structions on using these submenus, see “Settings menu” (컄 page 174). The number of menus available in the sys- tem depends on which optional equipment is installed in your vehicle.

Warning!

앫 Driving when your engine is badly over-

heated can cause some fluids which may have leaked into the engine com- partment to catch fire. You could be se- riously burned.

앫 Steam from an overheated engine can cause serious burns and can occur just by opening the hood. Stay away from the engine if you see or hear steam com- ing from it.

Turn off the engine, get out of the vehicle and do not stand near the vehicle until the engine has cooled down.

In the standard display, the main odometer and the trip odometer appear in the multi- function display.

The engine should not be operated with a coolant temperature above 248°F (120°C). Doing so may cause serious engine damage which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

During severe operating conditions, e.g. stop-and-go city traffic, the coolant temperature may rise close to 248°F (120°C). Excessive coolant temperature triggers a warning message in the multifunction display (컄 page 434).

AUDIO menu

The functions in the AUDIO menu operate the audio equipment which you currently have turned on. If no audio equipment is currently turned on, the message AUDIO OFF appears in the multifunction display. The following functions are available:

앫 With the Modular COMAND System switched on but route guidance not activated, the direction of travel and, if applicable, the name of the street cur- rently traveled on appear in the multi- function display.

앫 With the Modular COMAND System switched on and route guidance acti- vated, the direction of travel and ma- neuver instructions appear in the multifunction display.

Please refer to the Modular COMAND System manual for instructions on how to activate the route guidance system.

AIRMATIC*/Compass menu

The AIRMATIC/Compass menu displays the Airmatic messages and the direction into which you are currently driving. 왘 Press button è or ÿ repeatedly

until the AIRMATIC/Compass menu appears in the multifunction display.

For information on AIRMATIC*, see “AIR- MATIC*” (컄 page 269). For information on the compass, see “Vehicle submenu” (컄 page 186) and “Compass” (컄 page 327).

Vehicle status message memory menu

왘 Press button è or ÿ repeatedly

until the vehicle status message memory appears in the multifunction display.

No vehicle status messages If no conditions have been recorded in memory, the message in the multifunction display is: No message.

Use the vehicle status message memory menu to scan malfunction and warning messages that may be stored in the system. Such messages appear in the multifunction display and are based on conditions or system status the vehicle’s system has recorded.

Warning!

Malfunction and warning messages are only indicated for certain systems and are inten- tionally not very detailed. The malfunction and warning messages are simply a remind- er with respect to the operation of certain systems and do not replace the owner’s and/or driver’s responsibility to maintain the vehicle’s operating safety by having all required maintenance and safety checks performed on the vehicle and by bringing the vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center to address the malfunc- tion and warning messages (컄 page 416).

Vehicle status messages have been recorded If conditions have occurred causing status messages to be recorded, the number of messages appears in the multifunction display:

왘 Press button k or j.

The stored messages will now be displayed in order in which they have occurred. For malfunctions and warning messages, see “Vehicle status messages in the multifunction display” (컄 page 416).

After you have scrolled through all recorded status messages, the first recorded message appears again.

You will then only see high priority messages in the multifunction display (컄 page 416).

Settings menu

In the Settings menu there are two func- tions: 앫 The function Reset to factory

settings?, with which you can reset all the settings to the original factory settings.

앫 A collection of submenus with which you can make individual settings for your vehicle.

왘 Press button è or ÿ repeatedly until the Settings menu appears in the multifunction display.

Should the vehicle’s system record any conditions while driving, the number of messages will reappear in the multifunc- tion display 앫 when the SmartKey in the starter switch is turned to position 0 or removed from the starter switch or

앫 when you turn off the engine by

pressing the KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button (컄 page 66) in the starter switch once and open the driver’s door (this puts the starter switch in position 0, same as with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch)

Resetting all settings You can reset all the functions of all submenus to the factory settings. 왘 Press the reset button in the

instrument cluster (컄 page 158) for approximately 3 seconds. The request to press the reset button once more to confirm appears in the multifunction display.

The functions of all the submenus will reset to factory settings.

With the selection marker on the desired submenu, use the j button to access the individual functions within that sub- menu. Once within that submenu, you can use the j button to move to the next function or the k button to move to the previous function within that submenu. The settings themselves are made with button æ or ç.

Resetting the functions of a submenu You can reset all the functions for each submenu to the factory settings. 왘 Move to a function in the submenu. 왘 Press the reset button in the

instrument cluster (컄 page 158) for approximately 3 seconds. The request to press the reset button once more to confirm appears in the multifunction display.

All functions of the submenu will reset to factory settings.

Setting daytime running lamp mode (USA only)

This function is not available in countries where the daytime running lamp mode is mandatory and therefore in a constant mode.

Setting locator lighting With the locator lighting feature activated, the exterior lamp switch in position U (컄 page 148) and the interior lighting in automatic mode (컄 page 155), the follow- ing lamps will switch on during darkness when the vehicle is unlocked with the SmartKey: 앫 Parking lamps 앫 Tail lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps 앫 Corner-illuminating front fog lamps* The locator lighting switches off when the driver’s door is opened. If you do not open a door after unlocking the vehicle with the SmartKey, the lamps will switch off automatically after approxi- mately 40 seconds.

Setting night security illumination (Headlamps delayed shut-off) Use this function to set whether and for how long you would like the exterior lamps to remain on during darkness after exiting the vehicle and the doors closed. With the delayed shut-off feature activated and the exterior lamp switch in position U before the engine is turned off, the following lamps will switch on when the engine is turned off: 앫 Parking lamps 앫 Tail lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps 앫 Front fog lamps* If after turning off the engine you do not open a door, the lamps will switch off auto- matically after 60 seconds.

You can temporarily deactivate the delayed shut-off feature: 왘 Before leaving the vehicle, turn the

SmartKey in the starter switch to position 0.

왘 Then turn it to position 2 and back

to 0. The delayed shut-off feature is deactivated. It will reactivate as soon as you reinsert the SmartKey in the starter switch.

Setting interior lighting delayed shut-off Use this function to set whether and for how long you would like the interior lighting to remain on after you have re- moved the SmartKey from the starter switch. 왘 Move the selection marker with

In order to calibrate the compass properly, mind the following: 앫 Calibrate the compass in open terrain. Nearby buildings, bridges, power lines and large antenna masts, for example, could impair compass calibration.

앫 Switch off electrical consumers (e.g. climate control, windshield wipers, or rear window defroster).

앫 Close all doors and the tailgate. 왘 Start the engine (컄 page 53). 왘 Press button æ or ç to move the selection marker to the Vehicle submenu.

If the message Compass Calibration Completed Successfully does not ap- pear in the multifunction display, drive another full circle. If calibration does not succeed within 3 minutes, the message Compass Cal- ibration appears in the multifunction display again. Calibrating the compass has failed due to outside influences. Repeat compass calibration in a differ- ent location.

With this function set to on and the ex- terior rear view mirrors folded in using the button on the door control panel (컄 page 211), the exterior rear view mirrors will not fold out when you switch on the ignition. You will then have to fold out the exterior rear view mirrors using the button on the door control panel (컄 page 211).
