i Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior. If the vehicle interior is hot, ventilate the interior before driving off, see “Summer opening fea- ture” (컄 page 241). The climate control will then adjust the interior temperature to the set value much faster. Keep the air intake grille in front of the wind- shield free of snow and debris. Do not obstruct air flow by placing objects on the air flow-through exhaust slots below the rear window.

Controls in detail Dual-zone automatic climate control

The climate control is operational whenev- er the engine is running. You can operate the climate control system in either the au- tomatic or manual mode. The system cools or heats the interior depending on the se- lected interior temperature and the cur- rent outside temperature.

Nearly all dust particles, pollutants and odors are filtered out before outside air en- ters the passenger compartment through the air distribution system. The air conditioning will not engage (no cooling) if the A/C mode is deactivated (컄 page 218).

Warning!

Follow the recommended settings for heat- ing and cooling given on the following pag- es. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.

When operating the climate control, the air that enters the passenger compartment through the air vents can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set temperature). This may cause burns or frostbite to unpro- tected skin in the immediate area of the air vents. Always keep sufficient distance be- tween unprotected parts of the body and the air vents. If necessary, use the air distribu- tion control (컄 page 208) to direct the air to air vents in the vehicle interior that are not in the immediate area of unprotected skin.

Deactivating the climate control system

Warning!

i To switch the system on, you can also press another button, with the exception of 1 or F.

Operating the climate control system in automatic mode

When the climate control is switched off, the outside air supply and circulation are also switched off. Only choose this setting for a short time. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.

Deactivating 왘 Press button ´ (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209).

Reactivating 왘 Make sure the ignition is switched on. 왘 Press button ´ (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209) again. The previous settings are once again in effect.

i When operating the climate control system in automatic mode, you will only rarely need to adjust the temperature, air volume and air distri- bution. In automatic mode, cooling with dehumidify is switched on. This function can be switched off.

Warning!

If you switch off the cooling function the windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

Activating 왘 Press button U (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) while the engine is run- ning. The indicators for automatic air volume and air distribution in display 4 (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) come on. Air volume and air distribution are automatically controlled

왘 Use temperature controls 1 and 7 (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) to sepa- rately adjust the air temperature on each side of the passenger compart- ment. The temperature of the vehicle interior is adjusted automatically.

Setting the temperature

Use temperature controls 1 and 7 (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) to separate- ly adjust the air temperature on each side of the passenger compartment. You should raise or lower the temperature set- ting in small increments, preferably start- ing at 72°F (22°C). The climate control will adjust to the set temperature as fast as possible.

Increasing 왘 Turn temperature control 1 and/or

7 (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) slightly clockwise. The climate control system will corre- spondingly adjust the interior air tem- perature.

Adjusting air volume

Front defroster

You can use this setting to defrost the windshield, for example if it is iced up. You can also defog the windshield and the windows.

i Keep this setting selected only until the windshield or the windows are clear again.

Nine blower speeds are available. 왘 Press button ˜ to decrease or Q to increase air volume (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) to the desired level. The AUTO indicator for air volume in the display 4 (컄 page 208) or (컄 page 209) goes out.The automatic function for air volume is switched off, and air volume is controlled according to the desired setting.

i The air distribution continues to be con- trolled according to the indicator in the display 4.

Closing the cockpit air vent (Canada only) and the center air vents 왘 Turn thumbwheels 1 and 5

(컄 page 206) downward. The cockpit air vent 3 and the center air vents 2 and 4 are closed.

Opening the side air vents 왘 Turn thumbwheels 8 and a

Air recirculation mode

Switch to air recirculation mode to prevent unpleasant odors from entering the vehicle from the outside (e.g. before a driving through a tunnel). This setting cuts off the intake of outside air and recirculates the air in the passenger compartment.

Warning!

Fogged windows impair visibility, endanger- ing you and others. If the windows begin to fog on the inside, switching off the air recirculation mode immediately should clear interior window fogging. If interior window fogging persists, make sure the air conditioning (컄 page 218) is activated, or press button 0 or P.

Maximum cooling MAX COOL (USA only)

You can use this setting to provide the fast- est possible cooling of the vehicle interior (when windows and tilt/sliding sunroof or tilt/sliding panel* are closed).

Activating 왘 Press button 8 (컄 page 208).

MAX COOL appears in the display 4 (컄 page 208).

The air conditioning switches automatically to the following functions: 앫 maximum cooling 앫 maximum blowing power 앫 the air recirculation mode is switched

or (컄 page 209). The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

i The air recirculation mode is activated auto- matically at high outside temperatures. The indicator lamp on button , is not lit when the air recirculation mode is automatically switched on. A quantity of outside air is added after approxi- mately 30 minutes. If you have turned off the air conditioning (컄 page 218) or the outside temperature is be- low 41°F (5°C), the air recirculation mode will not switch on automatically.

Deactivating 왘 Press button , (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209). The indicator lamp on the button goes out.

i The air recirculation mode is deactivated au- tomatically: 앫 after 5 minutes if the outside temperature is

below approximately 41°F (5°C)

앫 after 5 minutes if the air conditioning is

Warning!

Never operate the windows and tilt/sliding sunroof if there is the possibility of anyone being harmed by the opening or closing pro- cedure.

In the event that the procedure causes po- tential danger, the closing of the windows can be immediately halted by pressing or pulling the respective window switch. The closing of the tilt/sliding sunroof can be im- mediately halted by moving the switch for the tilt/sliding sunroof in any direction.

The closing of the windows and the tilt/slid- ing sunroof can be reversed by again press- ing and holding the , button.

Convenience closing 왘 Press button , (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209) for approximately 2 seconds. The windows and tilt/sliding sunroof will close. You can release button , once the closing procedure has begun. The windows and tilt/sliding sunroof continue closing until they are fully closed. The indicator lamp on the but- ton comes on. The air recirculation mode is activated.

Convenience opening 왘 Press button , for approximately

2 seconds. The windows and tilt/sliding sunroof will return to their previous position. You can release button , once the opening procedure has begun. The win- dows and tilt/sliding sunroof continue opening until they have reached their previous position. The indicator lamp on the button goes out. The air recircu- lation mode is deactivated.

i A window or tilt/sliding sunroof will only re- turn to its previous position if it has not been moved to another position using the respective window switch or tilt/sliding sunroof switch af- ter it was closed with button ,. A window or tilt/sliding sunroof that has been moved will remain in its current position if button , is used to reopen the remaining windows or tilt/sliding sunroof.

Air conditioning

The cooling function, only operational when the engine is running, cools the vehi- cle interior down to the selected tempera- ture. The cooling function also dehumidifies the air in the vehicle interior, thus preventing the windows from fogging up.

i Condensation may drip out from underneath the vehicle. This is normal and not an indication of a malfunction.

Warning!

If you turn off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

! If the air conditioning cannot be turned on again, this indicates that the air conditioning is losing refrigerant. The compressor has turned it- self off. Have the air conditioning checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Deactivating It is possible to deactivate the air condi- tioning (cooling) function of the climate control system. The air in the vehicle will then no longer be cooled or dehumidified. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209). The indicator lamp on the button goes out.

Activating Moist air can fog up the windows. You can dehumidify the air with the air condition- ing. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 208) or

(컄 page 209) again. The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

The air conditioning uses the refrigerant R134a. This refrigerant is free of CFCs which are harmful to the ozone layer.

Residual heat and ventilation (Canada only)

With the engine switched off, it is possible to continue to heat or ventilate the interior for up to 30 minutes. This feature makes use of the residual heat produced by the engine.

i If you switch on the residual heat function when temperatures are high, only the ventilation will be switched on.

i Regardless of the selected air volume, the blower operates at low speed.

i How long the system will provide heating de- pends on 앫 the coolant temperature 앫 the temperature set by the operator The blower will run at speed setting 1 regardless of the air distribution control setting.

The air vents for the rear passenger compartment are located in the rear center console.

Rear passenger compartment adjustable air vents

The air conditioning for the rear passenger compartment is controlled via the climate control panel (컄 page 208).

The climate control is a 4-zone intelligent climate control system. Your vehicle interi- or is divided into 4 zones.

With the help of a sun sensor, the climate control determines the relation of the sun to the vehicle and automatically adjusts the inside temperature for every individual zone. You can set the temperature for each of the 4 zones separately. The climate control is operational whenev- er the engine is running. It cools the vehi- cle’s interior according to the angle and intensity of the sun’s rays, the outside tem- perature and the selected temperature. You can operate the climate control sys- tem in either the automatic or manual mode.

Use temperature control rocker switches 3 and 5 (컄 page 224) or (컄 page 225) to separately adjust the air temperature on each side of the passenger compartment. You should raise or lower the temperature setting in small incre- ments, preferably starting at 72°F (22°C). The adjusted temperature appears in the display 4 (컄 page 224) or (컄 page 225). The climate control will adjust to the set temperature as fast as possible.

i You can also adjust the temperature in the rear passenger compartment (컄 page 237).

i When operating the climate control system in automatic mode, you will only rarely need to adjust the temperature, air volume and air distri- bution.

Front defroster

Use buttons U (컄 page 224) or (컄 page 225) for automatic mode or air volume buttons ˜ or Q (컄 page 224) or (컄 page 225) to adjust air volume manually. Nine blower speeds are available. 왘 Press button ˜ to decrease or

button Q to increase air volume to the desired level. The AUTO indicator for air volume in the display 4 (컄 page 224) or (컄 page 225) goes out. The selected blower speed is shown in the display 4. Automatic air distribution remains switched on. The indicator lamps on the U but- tons remain lit.

You can use this setting to defrost the windshield, for example if it is iced up. You can also defog the windshield and the windows.

i Keep this setting selected only until the windshield or the windows are clear again.

You can use this setting to provide the fast- est possible cooling of the vehicle interior (when windows and tilt/sliding sunroof or tilt/sliding panel* are closed).

Air recirculation mode

Switch to air recirculation mode to prevent unpleasant odors from entering the vehicle from the outside (e.g. before driving through a tunnel). This setting cuts off the intake of outside air and recirculates the air in the passenger compartment.

Warning!

Fogged windows impair visibility, endanger- ing you and others. If the windows begin to fog on the inside, switching off the air recirculation mode immediately should clear interior window fogging. If interior window fogging persists, make sure the air conditioning (컄 page 235) is activated, or press button P or 0.

Activating 왘 Press button , (컄 page 224) or

(컄 page 225). The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

i The air recirculation mode is activated auto- matically at high outside temperatures and if the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) and ni- trogen oxide in the outside air increases, for ex- ample in a tunnel. The indicator lamp on button , is not lit when the air recirculation mode is automatically switched on. A quantity of outside air is added after approxi- mately 30 minutes.

In the event that the procedure causes po- tential danger, the closing of the windows can be immediately halted by pressing or pulling the respective window switch. The closing of the tilt/sliding sunroof can be im- mediately halted by moving the switch for the tilt/sliding sunroof in any direction.

The closing of the windows and the tilt/slid- ing sunroof can be reversed by again press- ing and holding the , button.

2 seconds. The windows and tilt/sliding sunroof will return to their previous posi- tion.You can release button , once the opening procedure has begun. The windows and tilt/sliding sunroof con- tinue opening until they have reached their previous position. The indicator lamp on the button goes out. The air re- circulation mode is deactivated.

i A window or tilt/sliding sunroof will only re- turn to its previous position if it has not been moved to another position using the respective window switch or tilt/sliding sunroof switch af- ter it was closed with button ,. A window or tilt/sliding sunroof that has been moved will remain in its current position if button , is used to reopen the remaining windows or tilt/sliding sunroof.

Combination filter with pollutant-sensi- tive air-recirculation mode The combination filter reduces pollutants and unpleasant odors in the outside air. The pollutant-sensitive air-recirculation mode automatically switches off the sup- ply of outside air when pollutants are de- tected in the air.

i The pollutant-sensitive air-recirculation mode is not possible if you have switched off the air conditioning or if the temperature falls below 41°F (5°C).

Air conditioning

The cooling function, only operational when the engine is running, cools the vehi- cle interior down to the selected tempera- ture. The cooling function also dehumidifies the air in the vehicle interior, thus preventing the windows from fogging up.

i Condensation may drip out from underneath the vehicle. This is normal and not an indication of a malfunction.

Warning!

If you turn off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

Deactivating It is possible to deactivate the air condi- tioning (cooling) function of the climate control system. The air in the vehicle will then no longer be cooled or dehumidified. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 224) or

(컄 page 225). The indicator lamp on the button goes out.

Activating Moist air can fog up the windows. You can dehumidify the air with the air condition- ing. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 224) or

(컄 page 225) again. The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

The air conditioning uses the refrigerant R134a. This refrigerant is free of CFCs which are harmful to the ozone layer.

! If the air conditioning cannot be turned on again, this indicates that the air conditioning is losing refrigerant. The compressor has turned it- self off. Have the air conditioning checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

Residual heat and ventilation (Canada only)

With the engine switched off, it is possible to continue to heat or ventilate the interior for up to 30 minutes. This feature makes use of the residual heat produced by the engine.

i If you switch on the residual heat function when temperatures are high, only the ventilation will be switched on.

i Regardless of the selected air volume, the blower operates at low speed.

The windows are opened and closed elec- trically. The switches for all of the windows are on the driver’s door. The switches for the respective windows are on the front passenger door and the rear doors.

The closing of the windows can be immedi- ately halted by releasing the switch or, if switch was pulled past the resistance point and released, by either pressing or pulling the respective switch.

The windows are equipped with the ex- press-close and automatic reversal func- tion. If the window encounters an obstruction that blocks its path in a circum- stance where you pulled the switch past the resistance point and released it to close the window, the automatic reversal function will stop the window and open it slightly.

The tilt/sliding sunroof is opened and closed electrically. The switch for the tilt/sliding sunroof is on the overhead con- trol panel.

With the sunroof closed or tilted open, a screen can be slid into the sunroof opening to guard against sun rays. When sliding the sunroof open, the screen will also retract.

The tilt/sliding sunroof is made out of glass. In the event of an accident, the glass may shatter. This may result in an opening in the roof.

In a vehicle rollover, occupants not wearing their seat belts or not wearing them properly may be thrown out of the opening. Such an opening also presents a potential for injury for occupants wearing their seat belts prop- erly as entire body parts or portions of them may protrude from the passenger compart- ment.

! To avoid damaging the seals, do not trans- port any objects with sharp edges which can stick out of the tilt/sliding sunroof. Do not open the tilt/sliding sunroof if there is snow or ice on the roof, as this could result in malfunctions. The tilt/sliding sunroof can be opened or closed manually should an electrical malfunction occur (컄 page 438).

! Please keep in mind that weather conditions can sometimes change rapidly. Make sure to close the tilt/sliding sunroof when leaving the vehicle. If water enters the vehicle interior, vehi- cle electronics could be damaged which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

i When the tilt/sliding sunroof is open, reso- nance noises may result in addition to the usual wind noises. They are caused by minimal pres- sure changes in the passenger compartment. To reduce or eliminate these noises, change the po- sition of the tilt/sliding sunroof or open a side window slightly.

i You can also open or close the tilt/sliding sunroof using the SmartKey, see “Summer open- ing feature” (컄 page 241) and “Convenience closing feature” (컄 page 242). Cruise control

The cruise control automatically maintains the speed you set for your vehicle. Use of cruise control is recommended for driving at a constant speed for extended periods of time. You can set or resume cruise control at any speed above 20 mph (30 km/h). The cruise control function is operated by means of the cruise control lever. The cruise control lever is the uppermost lever on the left-hand side of the steering column (컄 page 24).

Warning!

The cruise control is a convenience system designed to assist the driver during vehicle operation. The driver is and must always re- main responsible for the vehicle’s speed and for safe brake operation.

Only use the cruise control if the road, traffic and weather conditions make it advisable to travel at a steady speed. 앫 The use of cruise control can be danger- ous on winding roads or in heavy traffic because conditions do not allow safe driving at a steady speed.

앫 The use of cruise control can be danger- ous on slippery roads. Rapid changes in tire traction can result in wheel spin and loss of control.

앫 Deactivate the cruise control when driv-

ing in fog.

The “Resume” function should only be oper- ated if the driver is fully aware of the previ- ously set speed and wishes to resume this particular preset speed.

Setting current speed 왘 Accelerate or decelerate to the desired

speed.

왘 Briefly lift 1 or depress 2 the cruise

control lever. The current speed is set.

왘 Remove your foot from the accelerator

pedal. Cruise control is activated.

The selected speed appears in the multi- function display for approximately 5 seconds, and the corresponding speed- ometer segments from the selected speed to the vehicle maximum speed are illumi- nated.

i On uphill or downhill grades, the cruise con- trol may not be able to maintain the set speed. Once the grade eases, the set speed will be re- sumed. On downhill grades, the cruise control maintains the set speed with active braking action. In addition, on longer downhill grades the auto- matic transmission will automatically downshift.

Distronic*

When activated, the Distronic adaptive cruise control system increases driving convenience afforded by the cruise control during travel on expressways and other major roads. 앫 If the Distronic distance sensor detects a slower moving vehicle directly ahead, your vehicle speed will be reduced so that you follow that vehicle at a preset distance.

앫 If there is no vehicle directly ahead of you, Distronic will function in the same way as cruise control (컄 page 246).

Warning!

Distronic adaptive cruise control is no sub- stitute for active driving involvement. It does not react to stationary objects, nor recog- nize or predict the curvature and lane layout or the movement of vehicles ahead. Distronic can only apply a maximum of 20% of the vehicle’s braking power.

It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to road, traffic and weather con- ditions and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle.

Warning!

Distronic is a convenience system, its speed adjustment reduction capability is intended to make cruise control more effective and usable when traffic speeds vary. It is not however, intended to, nor does it, replace the need for extreme care. The responsibili- ty for the vehicle speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead, including most impor- tantly brake operation to assure safe stop- ping distance, always rests with the driver.

Distronic cannot take street and traffic con- ditions into account.

Use of Distronic can be dangerous on slip- pery roads. Rapid changes in tire traction can result in wheel spin and loss of control.
