CAUTION

If you don’t have necessary tools, the correct bulbs and the expertise, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.In many cases,it is difficult to replace vehicle light bulbs because other parts of the vehicle must be removed before you can get to the bulb. This is especially true if you have to remove the head- light assembly to get to the bulb(s). Removing/installing the headlight assembly can result in damage to the vehicle.

✽ NOTICE After heavy, driving rain or washing, headlight and taillight lenses could appear frosty. This condition is caused by the temperature difference between the lamp inside and outside. This is similar to the condensation on your windows inside your vehicle during the rain and doesn’t indicate a problem with your vehicle. If the water leaks into the lamp bulb circuitry, have the vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

WARNING - Working on

the lights

Prior to working on the light, firmly apply the parking brake, ensure that the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and turn off the lights to avoid sudden movement of the vehicle and burning your fin- gers or receiving an electric shock.

Use only bulbs of the specified wattage.

CAUTION

Be sure to replace the burned-out bulb with one of the same wattage rating. Otherwise, it may cause damage to the fuse or electric wiring system.

3. Disconnect the headlight bulb socket-

connector.

4. Unsnap the headlight bulb retaining wire by depressing the end and push- ing it upward.

5. Remove the bulb from the headlight

assembly.

6. Install a new headlight bulb and snap the headlight bulb retaining wire into position by aligning the wire with the groove on the bulb.

7. Connect the headlight bulb socket-

connector.

8. Install the headlight bulb cover by turn-

ing it clockwise.

3. Remove the socket from the assembly by turning the socket counterclockwise until the tabs on the socket align with the slots on the assembly.

4. Remove the bulb from the socket by pressing it in and rotating it counter- clockwise until the tabs on the bulb align with the slots in the socket. Pull the bulb out of the socket.

5. Insert a new bulb by inserting it into the socket and rotating it until it locks into place.

6. Install the socket in the assembly by aligning the tabs on the socket with the slots in the assembly. Push the socket into the assembly and turn the socket clockwise.

7. Install the service cover by putting it

into the service hole.

Back-up light If the light is not operating, have the vehi- cle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

2. Remove the bulb by pulling it straight

APPEARANCE CARE Exterior care Exterior general caution It is very important to follow the label directions when using any chemical cleaner or polish. Read all warning and caution statements that appear on the label.

Finish maintenance Washing To help protect your vehicle’s finish from rust and deterioration, wash it thoroughly and frequently at least once a month with lukewarm or cold water. If you use your vehicle for off-road driv- ing, you should wash it after each off- road trip. Pay special attention to the removal of any accumulation of salt, dirt, mud, and other foreign materials. Make sure the drain holes in the lower edges of the doors and rocker panels are kept clear and clean. Insects, tar, tree sap, bird droppings, industrial pollution and similar deposits can damage your vehicle’s finish if not removed immediately. Even prompt washing with plain water may not completely remove all these deposits. A mild soap, safe for use on painted surfaces, may be used.

After washing, rinse the vehicle thor- oughly with lukewarm or cold water. Do not allow soap to dry on the finish.

CAUTION

• Do not use strong soap,chemical detergents or hot water, and do not wash the vehicle in direct sunlight or when the body of the vehicle is warm.

• Be careful when washing the side windows of your vehicle. Especially, with high-pressure water,water may leak through the windows and wet the interior.

• To prevent damage to the plastic parts,do not clean with chemical solvents or strong detergents.

WARNING - Wet brakes

After washing the vehicle, test the brakes while driving slowly to see if they have been affected by water. If braking performance is impaired, dry the brakes by applying them lightly while maintaining a slow for- ward speed.

Waxing Wax the vehicle when water will no longer bead on the paint. Always wash and dry the vehicle before waxing. Use a good quality liquid or paste wax, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Wax all metal trim to protect it and to maintain its luster. Removing oil, tar, and similar materials with a spot remover will usually strip the wax from the finish. Be sure to re-wax these areas even if the rest of the vehicle does not yet need waxing.

CAUTION

• Wiping dust or dirt off the body with a dry cloth will scratch the finish.

• Do not use steel wool, abrasive cleaners, or strong detergents containing highly alkaline or caustic agents on chrome-plated or anodized aluminum parts.This may result in damage to the pro- tective coating and cause discol- oration or paint deterioration.

Finish damage repair Deep scratches or stone chips in the painted surface must be repaired promptly. Exposed metal will quickly rust and may develop into a major repair expense.

✽ NOTICE If your vehicle is damaged and requires any metal repair or replacement, be sure the body shop applies anti-corrosion materials to the parts repaired or replaced.

Bright-metal maintenance • To remove road tar and insects, use a tar remover, not a scraper or other sharp object.

• To protect the surfaces of bright-metal parts from corrosion, apply a coating of wax or chrome preservative and rub to a high luster.

• During winter weather or in coastal areas, cover the bright metal parts with a heavier coating of wax or preserva- tive. If necessary, coat the parts with non-corrosive petroleum jelly or other protective compound.

Maintenance

Underbody maintenance Corrosive materials used for ice and snow removal and dust control may col- lect on the underbody. If these materials are not removed, accelerated rusting can occur on underbody parts such as the fuel lines, frame, floor pan and exhaust system, even though they have been treated with rust protection. Thoroughly flush the vehicle underbody and wheel openings with lukewarm or cold water once a month, after off-road driving and at the end of each winter. Pay special attention to these areas because it is difficult to see all the mud and dirt. It will do more harm than good to wet down the road grime without removing it. The lower edges of doors, rocker panels, and frame members have drain holes that should not be allowed to clog with dirt; trapped water in these areas can cause rusting.

Aluminum wheel maintenance The aluminum wheels are coated with a clear protective finish. • Do not use any abrasive cleaner, pol- ishing compound, solvent, or wire brushes on aluminum wheels. They may scratch or damage the finish.

• Use only a mild soap or neutral deter- gent, and rinse thoroughly with water. Also, be sure to clean the wheels after driving on salted roads. This helps pre- vent corrosion.

• Avoid washing the wheels with high-

speed car wash brushes.

• Do not use any cleaners containing acid or acid detergents. It may damage and corrode the aluminum wheels coated with a clear protective finish.

Corrosion protection Protecting your vehicle from corrosion By using the most advanced design and construction practices to combat corro- sion, we produce cars of the highest quality. However, this is only part of the job. To achieve the long-term corrosion resistance your vehicle can deliver, the owner's cooperation and assistance is also required.

Common causes of corrosion The most common causes of corrosion on your car are: • Road salt, dirt and moisture that is allowed to accumulate underneath the car.

• Removal of paint or protective coatings by stones, gravel, abrasion or minor scrapes and dents which leave unpro- tected metal exposed to corrosion.

High-corrosion areas If you live in an area where your car is regularly exposed to corrosive materials, corrosion protection is particularly impor- tant. Some of the common causes of accelerated corrosion are road salts, dust control chemicals, ocean air and industrial pollution.

Maintenance

To help prevent corrosion You can help prevent corrosion from get- ting started by observing the following:

Keep your car clean The best way to prevent corrosion is to keep your car clean and free of corrosive materials. Attention to the underside of the car is particularly important.

• If you live in a high-corrosion area — where road salts are used, near the ocean, areas with industrial pollution, acid rain, etc.—, you should take extra care to prevent corrosion. In winter, hose off the underside of your car at least once a month and be sure to clean the underside thoroughly when winter is over.

Moisture breeds corrosion Moisture creates the conditions in which corrosion is most likely to occur. For example, corrosion is accelerated by high humidity, particularly when tempera- tures are just above freezing. In such conditions, the corrosive material is kept in contact with the car surfaces by mois- ture that is slow to evaporate. Mud is particularly corrosive because it is slow to dry and holds moisture in contact with the vehicle. Although the mud appears to be dry, it can still retain the moisture and promote corrosion. High temperatures can also accelerate corrosion of parts that are not properly ventilated so the moisture can be dis- persed. For all these reasons, it is par- ticularly important to keep your car clean and free of mud or accumulations of other materials. This applies not only to the visible surfaces but particularly to the underside of the car.

• When cleaning underneath the car, give particular attention to the compo- nents under the fenders and other areas that are hidden from view. Do a thorough job; just dampening the accu- mulated mud rather than washing it away will accelerate corrosion rather than prevent it. Water under high pres- sure and steam are particularly effec- tive in removing accumulated mud and corrosive materials.

• When cleaning lower door panels, rocker panels and frame members, be sure that drain holes are kept open so that moisture can escape and not be trapped inside to accelerate corrosion.

Keep your garage dry Don't park your car in a damp, poorly ventilated garage. This creates a favor- able environment for corrosion. This is particularly true if you wash your car in the garage or drive it into the garage when it is still wet or covered with snow, ice or mud. Even a heated garage can contribute to corrosion unless it is well ventilated so moisture is dispersed.

Keep paint and trim in good condition Scratches or chips in the finish should be covered with "touch-up" paint as soon as possible to reduce the possibility of cor- rosion. If bare metal is showing through, the attention of a qualified body and paint shop is recommended.

Bird droppings : Bird droppings are high- ly corrosive and may damage painted surfaces in just a few hours. Always remove bird droppings as soon as possi- ble.

Don't neglect the interior Moisture can collect under the floor mats and carpeting to cause corrosion. Check under the mats periodically to be sure the carpeting is dry. Use particular care if you carry fertilizers, cleaning materials or chemicals in the car. These should be carried only in proper containers and any spills or leaks should be cleaned up, flushed with clean water and thoroughly dried.

Interior care Interior general precautions Prevent caustic solutions such as per- fume and cosmetic oil from contacting the dashboard because they may cause damage or discoloration. If they do con- tact the dashboard, wipe them off imme- diately. See the instructions that follow for the proper way to clean vinyl.

CAUTION

• Never allow water or other liquids to come in contact with electri- cal/electronic components inside the vehicle as this may damage them.

• When cleaning leather products (steering wheel, seats etc.), use neutral detergents or low alcohol content solutions.If you use high alcohol content solutions or acid/alkaline detergents,the color of the leather may fade or the sur- face may get stripped off.

Cleaning the upholstery and interior trim Vinyl Remove dust and loose dirt from vinyl with a whisk broom or vacuum cleaner. Clean vinyl surfaces with a vinyl cleaner.

Fabric Remove dust and loose dirt from fabric with a whisk broom or vacuum cleaner. Clean with a mild soap solution recom- mended for upholstery or carpets. Remove fresh spots immediately with a fabric spot cleaner. If fresh spots do not receive immediate attention, the fabric can be stained and its color can be affected. Also, its fire-resistant properties can be reduced if the material is not properly maintained.

CAUTION

Using anything but recommended cleaners and procedures may affect the fabric’s appearance and fire- resistant properties.

Cleaning the lap/shoulder belt web- bing Clean the belt webbing with any mild soap solution recommended for cleaning upholstery or carpet. Follow the instruc- tions provided with the soap. Do not bleach or re-dye the webbing because this may weaken it.

Cleaning the interior window glass If the interior glass surfaces of the vehi- cle become fogged (that is, covered with an oily, greasy or waxy film), they should be cleaned with glass cleaner. Follow the directions on the glass cleaner container.

CAUTION

Do not scrape or scratch the inside of the rear window.This may result in damage to the rear window defroster grid.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM The emission control system of your vehicle is covered by a written limited warranty. Please see the warranty infor- mation contained the Owner’s Handbook & Warranty Information book- let in your vehicle. Your vehicle is equipped with an emis- sion control system to meet all applicable emission regulations. There are three emission control sys- tems, as follows.

(1) Crankcase emission control system (2) Evaporative emission control system (3) Exhaust emission control system

In order to assure the proper function of the emission control systems, it is rec- ommended that you have your car inspected and maintained by an author- ized HYUNDAI dealer in accordance with the maintenance schedule in this manu- al.

Caution Inspection and Maintenance Test (With Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system) • To prevent the vehicle from misfir- ing during dynamometer testing, turn the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system off by pressing the ESC switch.

• After dynamometer testing is com- pleted, turn the ESC system back on by pressing the ESC switch again.

1. Crankcase emission control

system

The positive crankcase ventilation sys- tem is employed to prevent air pollution caused by blow-by gases being emitted from the crankcase. This system supplies fresh filtered air to the crankcase through the air intake hose. Inside the crankcase, the fresh air mixes with blow-by gases, which then pass through the PCV valve into the induction system.

2. Evaporative emission control

(including ORVR: Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery) system

The Evaporative Emission Control System is designed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmos- phere. (The ORVR system is designed to allow the vapors from the fuel tank to be loaded into a canister while refueling at the gas station, preventing the escape of fuel vapors into the atmosphere.)

Canister Fuel vapors generated inside the fuel tank are absorbed and stored in the onboard canister. When the engine is running, the fuel vapors absorbed in the canister are drawn into the surge tank through the purge control solenoid valve.

3. Exhaust emission control

system

The Exhaust Emission Control System is a highly effective system which controls exhaust emissions while maintaining good vehicle performance.

G270202AUN Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV) The purge control solenoid valve is con- trolled by the Engine Control Module (ECM); when the engine coolant temper- ature is low during idling, the PCSV clos- es so that evaporated fuel is not taken into the engine. After the engine warms- up during ordinary driving, the PCSV opens to introduce evaporated fuel to the engine.

Modification of your vehicle could affect its performance, safety or durability and may even violate governmental safety and emissions regulations. In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from any modification may not be covered under warranty.

Engine exhaust gas precautions (car- bon monoxide) • Carbon monoxide can be present with other exhaust fumes. Therefore, if you smell exhaust fumes of any kind inside your vehicle, have it inspected and repaired immediately. If you ever sus- pect exhaust fumes are coming into your vehicle, drive it only with all the windows fully open. Have your vehicle checked and repaired immediately.

WARNING - Exhaust

Engine exhaust gases contain car- bon monoxide (CO). Though color- less and odorless, it is dangerous and could be lethal if inhaled. Follow the instructions on this page to avoid CO poisoning.

• Do not operate the engine in confined or closed areas (such as garages) any more than what is necessary to move the vehicle in or out of the area.

• When the vehicle is stopped in an open area for more than a short time with the engine running, adjust the ventilation system (as needed) to draw outside air into the vehicle.

• Never sit in a parked or stopped vehi- cle for any extended time with the engine running.

• When the engine stalls or fails to start, excessive attempts to restart the engine may cause damage to the emission control system.

Operating precautions for catalytic converters (if equipped)

WARNING - Fire

A hot exhaust system can ignite flammable items under your vehi- cle. Do not park, idle, or drive the vehicle over or near flammable objects, such as grass, vegetation, paper, leaves, etc.

Your vehicle is equipped with a catalytic converter emission control device. Therefore, the following precautions must be observed: • Use only UNLEADED FUEL for gaso-

line engines.

• Do not operate the vehicle when there are signs of engine malfunction, such as misfire or a noticeable loss of per- formance.

• Do not misuse or abuse the engine. Examples of misuse are coasting with the ignition off and descending steep grades in gear with the ignition off.

• Do not operate the engine at high idle speed for extended periods (5 minutes or more).

• Do not modify or tamper with any part of the engine or emission control sys- tem. All inspections and adjustments must be made by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

• Avoid driving with a extremely low fuel level. Running out of fuel could cause the engine to misfire, damaging the catalytic converter.

Failure to observe these precautions could result in damage to the catalytic converter vehicle. Additionally, such actions could void your warranties.

CAUTION

Always be sure to clean the area around any filler plug,drain plug,or dipstick before checking or drain- ing any lubricant.This is especially important in dusty or sandy areas and when the vehicle is used on unpaved roads. Cleaning the plug and dipstick areas will prevent dirt and grit from entering the engine and other mechanisms that could be damaged.

Engine oil viscosity (thickness) has an effect on fuel economy and cold weather operating (engine start and engine oil flowability). Lower viscosity engine oils can provide better fuel economy and cold weather performance, however, higher viscosity engine oils are required for sat- isfactory lubrication in hot weather. Using oils of any viscosity other than those rec- ommended could result in engine dam- age.

When choosing an oil, consider the range of temperature your vehicle will be oper- ated in before the next oil change. Proceed to select the recommended oil viscosity from the chart.

1. For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use the engine oil of a viscosity grade SAE 5W- 20 (API Service SM / ILSAC GF-4). However, if the engine oil is not available, select the prop- er engine oil using the engine oil viscosity chart.

Guide to Hyundai Genuine Parts 1. What are Hyundai Genuine Parts?

Hyundai Genuine Parts are the same parts used by Hyundai Motor Company to manufacture vehicles. They are designed and tested for the optimum safety, performance, and reli- ability to our customers.

2. Why should you use genuine parts? Hyundai Genuine Parts are engi- neered and built to meet rigid manu- facturing requirements. Using imita- tion, counterfeit or used salvage parts is not covered under the Hyundai New Vehicle Limited Warranty or any other Hyundai warranty.

In addition, any damage to or failure of Hyundai Genuine Parts caused by the installation or failure of an imitation, counterfeit or used salvage part is not covered by any Hyundai Warranty.

3. How can you tell if you are purchas-

ing Hyundai Genuine Parts? Look for the Hyundai Genuine Parts Logo on the package (see below). Hyundai Genuine Parts exported to are packaged with labels written only in English. Hyundai Genuine Parts are only sold through authorized Hyundai Dealerships.

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL We want to help you get the greatest possible driving pleasure from your vehi- cle. Your Owner’s Manual can assist you in many ways. We strongly recommend that you read the entire manual. In order to minimize the chance of death or injury, you must read the WARNING and CAU- TION sections in the manual. Illustrations complement the words in this manual to best explain how to enjoy your vehicle. By reading your manual, you will learn about features, important safety information, and driving tips under vari- ous road conditions.

The general layout of the manual is pro- vided in the Table of Contents. A good place to start is the index; it has an alpha- betical listing of all information in your manual. Sections: This manual has eight sections plus an index. Each section begins with a brief list of contents so you can tell at a glance if that section has the information you want.

You will find various WARNINGS, CAU- TIONS, and NOTICES in this manual. These WARNINGS were prepared to enhance your personal safety.You should carefully read and follow ALL procedures and recommendations provided in these WARNINGS, CAUTIONS and NOTICES.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS Your new vehicle is designed to use only unleaded fuel having a pump octane number ((R+M)/2) of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher.

Your new vehicle is designed to obtain maximum performance with UNLEADED FUEL, as well as minimize exhaust emis- sions and spark plug fouling.

CAUTION

Never add any fuel system cleaning agents to the fuel tank other than what has been specified. (Consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for details.)

WARNING

• Do not "top off" after the nozzle automatically shuts off when refueling.

• Tighten the cap until it clicks, oth- erwise the Malfunction Indicator Light “

” will illuminate.

• Always check that the fuel cap is installed securely to prevent fuel spillage in the event of an acci- dent.

Introduction

Gasoline containing alcohol and methanol Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and ethanol (also known as grain alcohol), and gasoline or gasohol containing methanol (also known as wood alcohol) are being marketed along with or instead of leaded or unleaded gasoline. Do not use gasohol containing more than 10% ethanol, and do not use gasoline or gasohol containing any methanol. Either of these fuels may cause drivability prob- lems and damage to the fuel system. Discontinue using gasohol of any kind if drivability problems occur. Vehicle damage or drivability problems may not be covered by the manufactur- er’s warranty if they result from the use of: 1. Gasohol containing more than 10%

ethanol.

2. Gasoline or gasohol containing

methanol.

3. Leaded fuel or leaded gasohol.

"E85" fuel is an alternative fuel com- prised of 85 percent ethanol and 15 per- cent gasoline, and is manufactured exclusively for use in Flexible Fuel Vehicles. “E85” is not compatible with your vehicle. Use of “E85” may result in poor engine performance and damage to your vehicle's engine and fuel system. HYUNDAI recommends that customers do not use fuel with an ethanol content exceeding 10 percent.

CAUTION

Your New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover damage to the fuel system or any performance prob- lems caused by the use of “E85”fuel.

CAUTION

Never use gasohol which contains methanol. Discontinue use of any gasohol product which impairs dri- vability.

Use of MTBE HYUNDAI recommends avoiding fuels containing MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) over 15.0% vol. (Oxygen Content 2.7% weight) in your vehicle. Fuel containing MTBE over 15.0% vol. (Oxygen Content 2.7% weight) may reduce vehicle performance and produce vapor lock or hard starting.

CAUTION

Your New Vehicle Limited Warranty may not cover damage to the fuel system and any performance prob- lems that are caused by the use of fuels containing methanol or fuels containing MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) over 15.0% vol. (Oxygen Content 2.7% weight.)

Do not use methanol Fuels containing methanol (wood alco- hol) should not be used in your vehicle. This type of fuel can reduce vehicle per- formance and damage components of the fuel system.
