Security System

Immobilizer System The immobilizer system prevents a key that has not been pre-registered from starting the engine. Each key contains electronic transmitters that use electronic signals to verify the key.

Pay attention to the following when inserting the key into the ignition switch: • Do not allow objects that emit strong radio waves near the ignition switch. • Make sure the key is not covered by or touching a metal object. • Do not bring a key from another vehicle's immobilizer system near the ignition

switch.

Security System Alarm The security system alarm activates when the doors, hatch, or hood are opened without the key, or remote transmitter. It also activates if you turn the ignition switch to ON (w after locking the doors and the hatch with the remote transmitter.

■ When the security system alarm activates The horn sounds intermittently, and all of the exterior lights flash.

■ To deactivate the security system alarm Unlock the vehicle using the key or remote transmitter. The system, along with the horn and flashing lights, is deactivated.

1Immobilizer System

NOTICE Leaving the ignition key in the vehicle can result in theft or accidental movement of the vehicle. Always take the ignition key with you whenever you leave the vehicle unattended.

Do not alter the system or add other devices to it. Doing so may damage the system and make your vehicle inoperable.

1Security System Alarm

The security alarm continues for a maximum of two minutes until the security system alarm deactivates.

1Security System Alarm

Do not set the security system alarm when someone is in the vehicle or a window is open. The system can accidentally activate when unlocking the door with the lock tab or the master door lock switch.

If the 12 volt battery goes dead after you have set the security system alarm, the security alarm may go off once the battery is recharged or replaced. If this occurs, deactivate the security system alarm by unlocking a door using the key or remote transmitter.

Do not attempt to alter this system or add another device to it.

Brightness Control

Control Knob

When the ignition switch is in ON (w, you can use the brightness control knob to adjust instrument panel brightness. Brighten: Turn the knob to the right. Dim: Turn the knob to the left.

1Brightness Control

Instrument panel brightness varies, depending on whether the exterior lights are on or off. The instrument panel dims to reduce glare when they are on.

You will hear a beeper when the brightness reaches minimum or maximum. The multi- information display will return to its original state several seconds after you adjust the brightness.

■ Brightness level indicator The brightness level is shown on the multi- information display while you are adjusting it.

Pressing either switches the display.

(information) button

If you turn the knob to the right until the brightness display is up to max, the beeper sounds. This cancels the reduced instrument panel brightness when the parking lights are on.

The brightness can be set differently for when the exterior lights are on, and when they are off.

Rear Defogger/Heated Door Mirror* Button

Press the rear defogger and heated door mirror button to defog the rear window and mirrors when the ignition switch is in ON (w.

The rear defogger and heated door mirrors automatically switch off after 10-30 minutes depending on the outside temperature. However, if the outside temperature is 32°F (0°C) or below, they do not automatically switch off.

1Rear Defogger/Heated Door Mirror * Button

NOTICE When cleaning the inside of the rear window, be careful not to damage the heating wires. It is critical to wipe the window from side to side along the defogger heating wires.

This system consumes a lot of power, so turn it off when the window has been defogged. Also, do not use the system for a long period when the engine is idling. This may weaken the 12 volt battery, making it difficult to start the engine.

Adjusting the Seats

Adjusting the Seat Positions

Allow sufficient space.

Move back.

Height Adjustment (Driver side only) Pull up or push down the lever to raise or lower the seat.

Adjust the driver's seat as far back as possible while allowing you to maintain full control of the vehicle. You should be able to sit upright, well back in the seat and be able to adequately press the pedals without leaning forward, and grip the steering wheel comfortably. The passenger's seat should be adjusted in a similar manner, so that it is as far back from the front airbag in the dashboard as possible.

1Adjusting the Seats

3WARNING

Sitting too close to a front airbag can result in serious injury or death if the front airbags inflate.

Always sit as far back from the front airbags as possible while maintaining control of the vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Transport Canada recommend that drivers allow at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the center of the steering wheel and the chest.

Always make seat adjustments before driving.

Once a seat is adjusted correctly, rock it back and forth to make sure it is locked in position.

Horizontal Position Adjustment Pull up on the bar to move the seat, then release the bar.

Seat-back Angle Adjustment Pull up the lever to change the angle.

■ Adjusting the Seat-Backs

Adjust the driver's seat-back to a comfortable, upright position, leaving ample space between your chest and the airbag cover in the center of the steering wheel.

The passenger should also adjust their seat- back to a comfortable, upright position.

Reclining a seat-back so that the shoulder part of the belt no longer rests against the occupant's chest reduces the protective capability of the belt. It also increases the chance of sliding under the belt in a crash and being seriously injured. The farther a seat-back is reclined, the greater the risk of injury.

120

1Adjusting the Seat-Backs

3WARNING

Reclining the seat-back too far can result in serious injury or death in a crash.

Adjust the seat-back to an upright position, and sit well back in the seat.

Do not put a cushion, or other object, between the seat-back and your back.

Doing so may interfere with proper seat belt or airbag operation.

If you cannot get far enough away from the steering wheel and still reach the controls, we recommend that you investigate whether some type of adaptive equipment may help.

■ Head Restraints Your vehicle is equipped with head restraints in both seating positions. However, they are non-adjustable. Head restraints are most effective for protection against whiplash and other rear- impact crash injuries.

■ Removing and Reinstalling the Head Restraints Head restraints can be removed for cleaning or repair.

■ Maintain a Proper Sitting Position After all occupants have adjusted their seats, and put on their seat belts, it is very important that they continue to sit upright, well back in their seats, with their feet on the floor, until the vehicle is safely parked and the engine is off.

Sitting improperly can increase the chance of injury during a crash. For example, if an occupant slouches, lies down, turns sideways, sits forward, leans forward or sideways, or puts one or both feet up, the chance of injury during a crash is greatly increased.

In addition, an occupant who is out of position in the seat can be seriously or fatally injured in a crash by striking interior parts of the vehicle or being struck by an inflating front airbag.

1Maintain a Proper Sitting Position

3WARNING

Sitting improperly or out of position can result in serious injury or death in a crash.

Always sit upright, well back in the seat, with your feet on the floor.

■ Active Head Restraints

The driver’s and passenger’s seats have active head restraints. In a rear impact, an occupant properly secured by a seat belt will be pushed against the seat-back and the head restraint will move forward. This reduces the distance between the restraint and the occupant’s head, which helps reduce the likelihood of whiplash and injuries to the neck and upper spine.

1Active Head Restraints

In order for the active head restraints to operate properly: • Do not hang any items on the head restraints, or

from the restraint legs.

• Do not place any objects between an occupant and

the seat-back.

• Install each restraint in its proper location.

After collision, the activated restraint should return to its normal position. If the restraint does not return to its normal position, or in the event of a severe collision, have the vehicle inspected by a dealer.
