OWNER'S LCTERATURE

PENALTY OF LEADERSHIP

CCad;llac Motor C a r Co. Detmit. Mich.)

THIS TEXT APPEARED AS AN ADVERTISEMENT IN THE SATURDAY EVENING POST 7 JANUARY ZND. IN THE YEAR 1915 1 COPYRIGHT. CADILLAC MOTOR CAR DIVISION

a

Few automobiles are fortunate enough to have the rich heritage that is Cadillace The name Cadiflac is appropriately that of Antoine de La Mothe Cadillac, the French military commander who founded the city of Detroit in 1701. What better name for the oldest automobile manufacturer in Detroit.

Henry M. Leland, known as the master of precision, initiated his pre- cision manufacturing techniques at the founding of Cadillac in 1902. His exacting standards prompted the motto by which Cadillac has been guided over the years - “Craftsmanship A Creed - Accuracy A Law.”

The introduction of the first four cylinder en- gine in 1905 led the industry and enabled Cadillacs to travel at speeds up to 50 mph.

For attention to quality and in- novation, the Royal Automobile

Club of England awarded the pres-

to Cadillac twice . . .

first in 1908 for achieving perfect interchangeability of parts and again in 1912 for introducing the elec- tric self starter, electric lighting and ignition system.

Cadillac is the only American manufacturer the to

this honor

and

only manufacturer in the world to win it twice. As commonplace as stan- dardized parts are today, in 1908 parts were still individually hand fitted both in production and service.

I

-.

. Jtandardization opened the eyes of

the industrial world and was the cor- ner-sone of modern production. From this achievement evolved the reference to Cadillac as “Standard of the World:’

In 1909 Cadillac was purchased by the then new General Motors Corporation. Convenience, clean- liness and all-weather comfort were greatly enhanced in 1910 when Cad- illac became the first manufacturer to offer closed bodies as standard equipment.

“The Penalty of Leadership” first appeared in the January 2, 1915 issue of The Saturdav Evening. Post as an expression of the Cadillac com- mitment to leadership, quality, and innovation. It is widely regarded as one of the finest documents ever written and was published following the introduction of the first produc- tion V8 engine. The V8 was stan- dard in all 1915 model Cadillacs.

Many Cadillac “firsts” have fol- lowed over the years, including the synchro-mech clashless transmis- sion, a nation-wide comprehensive

45 O V-16 Engine glass, service policy, security plate car to chrome plating and the first be designed by a stylist (1927 La- ’30s wit- Salle/Harley Earl). The nessed production of the smooth and quiet V12 and The crisp, contemporary lines or the 1938 60 Special series ushered in a new era in styling.

During World War 11, shortly after Pearl Harbor, Cadillac discon- tinued car production for the first time since 1902 in order to construct light tanks, combat vehicles and internal parts for Allison V 1710 en- gines. Two Cadillac V8 engines and Hydra-Matic transmissions were used in each tank.

-

For the 1948 model, Cadillac

introduced the 7

stainless steel roof and low profile tires.

which set the trend in automotive styling for nearly two decades. This was followed by the 1949 model with the two door hardtop Coupe DeVille and the modern overhead valve, high compression V8 engine

Engineering innovations, con- veniences and styling dominated the '50s and '60s. Cruise control, auto- matic climate control, t i l t a n d telescoping steering wheels, twilight sentinel and four door hard tops all debuted in these years. In 1957 the Eldorado Brougham featured ad- vances such as air suspension, mem- ory seat, automatic electric door locks, transistor radio, a brushed

The Eldorado,I introduced in 1953, was redesigned for 1967 as the first front wheel drive personal lux- ury car. The 472 cu. in. V8 engine used in all Cadillacs in 1968 and 1969 was enlarged to 500 cu. in. for all 1970 Eldorados.

An Air Cushion Restraint Sys- tem (airbag) was available for 1974, 1975 and 1976 Cadillacs.

Analog Electronic Fuel Injec- tion was available, on 1975 Cadillacs and was standard on the new inter- national size 1976 Seville. In 1978, the Trip Computer option incor- porated an on-board microprocessor.

'"1

A 1993 Cadillac AllantC in stock technical configuration, was selected as the pace car for the 76th Indianap- olis 500. The demanding pace car performance and handling require- ments were met because of such advanced systems as the 32 valve, dual overhead camshaft, Northstar 4.6 liter V8 engine, 4t80 E electroni- cally controlled automatic transaxle, road sensing suspension, speed sen- sitive steering, anrilock brakes and traction control.

For more than nine decades

Cadillac has been a leader in quality and technical innovation. Now more than ever, substance takes shape

This rich tradition continues into the '90s as Cadillac became the first automobile manufacturer to be awarded the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

The 1992 Seville STS is the first car ever to win all three major auto- motive awards: Car of the Year, Motor Trend; Ten Best List, Car & Driver; Car of the Year, Automobile Magazine.

HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL Many people read their owner’s manual from beginning to end when they

first receive their new vehicle. This will help you learn about the features I

and controls for your vehicle. In this manual, you’ll find that pictures and words work together to explain things quickly. INDEX A good place to look for what you need is the Index in back of the manual. It’s an alphabetical list of all that’s in the manual, and the page number where you’ll find it. SAFETY W M I N G S AND SylMBOLS You will find a number of safety cautions in this book. We use yellow and the word CAUTION to tell you about things that could hurt you if you were to ignore the warning.

’ A CAUTION:

These mean there is something that could hurt you or other people.

In the yellow caution area, we tell you what the hazard is. Then we tell you what to do to help avoid or reduce the hazard. Please read these cautions. If you don’t, you or others could be hurt. You will also find a red circle with a slash through it in this book. This safety symbol means “Don’t,” “Don’t do this,” or “Don’t let this happen.”

Khicle Damage Warnings Also, in this book you will find these blue notices:

In the blue notice area, we tell you about something that can damage your vehicle. Many times, this damage would not be covered by your warranty, and it could be costly. But the notice will tell you what to do to help avoid the damage. When you read other manuals, you might see CAUTION and NOTICE warnings in different colors or in different words. In this manual, we’ve used the familiar words and colors that Cadillac has used for years. You’ll also see warning labels on your vehicle. They use the same colors, and the words CAUTION or NOTICE.

- Vehicle Symbols

SEATS AND SAFETY BELTS Here you’ll find information about the seats in your Cadillac, your Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (“air bag”) system and how to use your safety belts properly. You can also learn about some things you should - not do with safety belts. SEATS AND SEAT CONTROLS This section tells you about the seats -- how to adjust them, and also about reclining front seatbacks, seatback latches, and head restraints. Power Seat The control is located on the front door arm rest.

The front tilt switch makes the front of the seat go up and down. 0 The rear tilt switch makes the back

of the seat go up and down.

0 Moving the center control switch makes the whole seat go up and down or forward and rearward.

Reclining Front Seawack(s) 1 To adjust the seatback,

lift the lever on the outer side of the seat and move the seatback to where vou want it. I I I Release &e lever to I lock the seatback. Pull up on the lever and the seat will go to an upright position.

If you have a Touring Sedan, it works with a switch, here:

Move the switch forward to raise the seat back and rearward to recline the seat back.

But don’t have a seatback reclined if your vehicle is moving.

A CAUTION:

I ' I

Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can't do their job when you're reclined like this.

.-.

The shoulder belt can't do its job because it won't be against your body. Instead, it wilt be in front of you. Pn a crash you could go into it, receiving neck or other injuries. The lap belt can't do its job either. In a crash the belt could go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at = your pelvicabones. This could cause serious internal injuries. For proper protection when the vehicle is in motion, have the seatback upright. Then sit well back in the seat and wear your safety belt p perly.

Head Restraints

Slide the head restraint UD or down so that the to’p of the restraint is closest to the top of your ears.

This position reduces the chance of a neck injury in a crash Front Seatback Latches (Two-Door Models) The front seatback folds forward to let people get into the back seat. Your seatback will move back and forth freely, unless you come to a sudden stop. Then it will lock in place. There’s one time the seatback may not fold without some help from you. That’s if your vehicle is parked going down a fairly steep hill.

To fold a front seatback forward, push the seatback toward the rear as you lift this latch. Then the seatback will fold forward. The latch must be down for the seat to work properly. SAFETYBELTS: THEY’RE FOR EVERYONE This part of the manual tells you how to use safety belts properly. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belt. And it explains the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint, or “air bag” system.

CAUTION:

Don% let anyone ride where they can’t wear a safety belt properly. If you are irr a crash and you’re not wearing a safety belt, your injuries can be much worse. You c%n hit things inside the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously inijared or killed. In the same crash, you might not be ifyou are buckled up. Always fasten your safety belt, and check that your passenge--’ belts are fastened properly too.

This figure lights up when you turn the key to “Run” or “Start” when your safety belt isn’t buckled, and you’ll hear a chime, too. It’s the reminder to buckle up. In many states and Canadian provinces, the law says to wear safety belts. Here’s why: They work. You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one. A few crashes are very mild. In them, you won’t get hurt even if you’re not buckled up. And some crashes can be so serious, like being hit by a train, that even buckled up a person wouldn’t survive. But most crashes are in between. In many of them, people who buckle up can survive and sometimes walk away. Without belts they could be badly hurt or killed. After 25 years of safety belts in vehicles, the facts are clear. In most crashes buckling up does matter ... a lot!

Y

why Safety Belts Work When you ride in or on anything, you go as fast as it goes.

For example, if the bike is going 10 mph (16 kmih), so is the child.

! -

12

When the bike hits the block, it stops. But the child keeps going!

I Take the simplest "vehicle." Suppose it's just a seat on wheels.

Put someone on it.

Get it up to speed. Then stop the “vehicle.” The rider doesn’t stop.

--

The person keeps going until stopped by something.

In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield ...

or the instrument panel ...

or the safety belts!

With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s why safety belts make such good sense. HERE ARE QUESTIONS “VY PEOPLE ASKABOUT SAFETYBELTS ==AND THE ANSWERS Q: Won’t I be trapped in the vehicle afier an accident ifI’m wearing a safety A: You - could be -- whether you’re wearing a safety belt or not. But you can easily unbuckle a safety belt, even if you’re upside down. And your chance of being conscious during and after an accident, so you - can unbuckle and get out, is much greater if you are belted. : Why don’t they just put in air bags so people won’t have to wear safety belts?

belt?

A: ‘Rir bags,” or Supplemental Inflatable Restraint systems, are in some vehicles today and will be in more of them in the future. But they are supplemental systems only -- so they work with safety belts, not

instead of them. Every “air bag” system ever offered for sale has required the use of safety belts. Even if you’re in a vehicle that has ‘‘ air bags,” you still have to buckle up to get the most protection. That’s true not only in frontal collisions, but especially in side and other collisions.

Q: If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far @om home, why should I wear

- safety belts?

A: You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident -- even

one that isn’t your fault -- you and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers. Most accidents occur within 25 miles (40 km) of home. And the greatest number of serious injuries and deaths occur at speeds of less than 40 mph (65 km/h). Safety belts are for everyone. - Safety Belt Reminder Light

When the key is turned to “Run” or “Start,” a light will come on for about eight seconds to remind people to fasten their safety belts. Unless the driver’s safety belt is buckled, a chime will also sound.

HOW TO W E m SAFETYBELTS PROPEEY Adults This section is only for people of adult size.

A CAUTION:

There are special things to know about safety belts and children. And there are different rules for babies and smaller children. If a child will be riding in your Cadillac, see the section after this one, called ‘Thildren.’’ Follow those rules for everyone’s protection.

First, you’ll want to know which restraint systems your vehicle has. We’ll start with the driver position. DRIVER POSITION This section describes the driver’s restraint system.

Lap-Shoulder Belt

The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see “Seats” in the Index) so you can sit up

straight.

19

3. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Don’t let it get twisted.

4. Push the latch plate into the buckle un,til it clicks.

If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender’’ at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle faces upward or outward so you would be able to unbuckle it quickly if you ever had to.

20

P

The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you'd be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This could cause serious or even fatal injuries. The shoulder belt should go over the shoulder and across the chest. These parts of the body are best able to take belt restraining forces. The safety belt locks if there's a sudden stop or crash.

Shoulder Belt Tightness Adjustment (Sedan De Ville) Your Sedan De Ville has a shoulder belt tightness adjustment feature. If the shoulder belt seems too tight, you can adjust it like this:

. Sit well back in the seat

2. Start pulling the shoulder belt out.

22

- 4. Let the belt go back all the way. You should hear a slight clicking

sound. If you don’t, the adjustment feature won’t set, and you’ll have to start again.

5. Now you can add a small amount of slack. Lean forward slightly, then sit back. If you’ve added more than 1 inch (25 mm) of slack, pull the shoulder belt out as you did before and start again.

If you move around in the vehicle enough, or if you pull out the shoulder belt, the belt will become tight again. If this happens, you can reset it.

Q: What’s wrong with this?

A: The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much

protection this way.

A CAUTION:

You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The shoulder belt should fit against your body. Don’t allow more than 1 inch (25 mm) of slack in Sedan De Ville models.

24

CL

- 1

- Q: What’s wrong with this?

A: The belt is buckled in the wrong place.

I A CAUTION:

You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones. This could cause serious internal injuries. Always buckle your belt into the buckle nearest you.

25

Q: What’s wrong with this?

A: The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the

shoulder at all times.

I A CAUTION:

You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. Also, the belt would apply too much force to the ribs, which aren’t as strong as shoulder bones. You could also severely injure internal organs like your liver or spleen.

26

-

Q: What’s wrong with this?

A: The belt is twisted across the body.

- A CAUTION:

e You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you

- wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to Pix it.

27

To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way.

I I -

Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle. SUPPLEMENT& INFLATDLE RESTMNT SYSTEM (AIR BAG) This section explains the driver's Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, commonly referred to as an air bag. Here are the most important things to know:

A CAUTION:

Air bags inflate with great force, faster than the blink of an eye. If yoii’re too close to an inflating air bag, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position for an air bag inflation in a crash. Always wear your safety belt, even with an air bag, and sit as far back as you can while still maintaining control of your vehicle,

.- -

Air Bag System Light There is an air bag readiness light on the instrument panel, which shows “Inflatable Restraint”. The system checks itself and the light tells you if there is a problem.

You will see this light flash for a few seconds when you turn your ignition to “Run” or “Start.” Then the light should go out, which means the system is ready.

A CAUTION:

If the air bag readiness light doesn’t come on when you start your vehicle, or stays on, or comes on when you are driving, your air bag system may not work properly. Have your vehicle serviced right away.

29

How The Air Bag System Works

Where is the air bag? The driver's air bag is in the middle of the steering wheel. When is an air bag expected to inflate? The air bag is designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes. The air bag will only inflate if the velocity of the impact is above the designed threshold level. When impacting straight into a wall that does not move or deform, the threshold level for most GM vehicles is between 9 and 14 mph (14 and 23 km/h). However, this velocity threshold depends on the vehicle design and may be several miles-per-hour faster or slower. In addition, this threshold velocity will be considerably higher if the vehicle strikes an object such as a parked car which will move and deform on impact. The air bag is also not designed to inflate in rollovers, side impacts, or rear impacts where the inflation would provide no occupant protection benefit. In any particular crash, the determination of whether the air bag should have inflated cannot be based solely on the level of damage on the vehicle(s). Inflation is determined by the angle of the impact and the vehicle's deceleration, of which vehicle damage is only one indication. Repair cost is not a good indicator of whether an air bag should have deployed.

c _

-

What makes an air bag inflate? In a frontal impact of sufficient severity, sensors strategically located on the vehicle detect that the vehicle is suddenly stopping as a result of a - crash. These sensors complete an electrical circuit, triggering a chemical reaction of the sodium azide sealed in the inflator. The reaction produces nitrogen gas, which inflates the cloth bag. The inflator, cloth bag, and related hardware are all part of the air bag inflator module packed inside the steering wheel. How does an air bag restrain?

-. - In moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions, even belted

occupants can contact the steering wheel. The air bag supplements the protection provided by safety belts. Air bags distribute the force of the

- impact more evenly over the occupant’s upper body, stopping the

occupant more gradually. But air bags would not provide protection in many types of collisions, including rollovers and rear and side impacts, primarily because an occupant’s motion is not toward the air bag. Air bags should never be regarded as anything more than a supplement to safety belt protection in moderate to severe frontal and near-frontal collisions. What will you see after an air bag inflation? After the air bag has inflated, it will then quickly deflate. This occurs so quickly that some people may not even realize that the air bag inflated. The air bag will not impede the driver’s vision or ability to steer the vehicle, nor will it hinder the occupants from exiting the vehicle. There

__

__

__ will be small amounts of smoke coming from vents in the deflated air bag.

Some components of the air bag module in the steering wheel hub may be hot for a short time, but the portion of the bag that comes into contact with you will not be hot to the touch. The nitrogen gas used to inflate the air bag will have vented into the passenger compartment, and the bag will be deflated within seconds after the collision. Nitrogen makes up about 80% of the air we breathe and is not hazardous. As the nitrogen vents

- from the bag, small particles are also vented into the passenger

compartment.

31

@ Don’t attach anything to the steering wheel pad. It might

injure the driver if the air bag inflates. The air bag is designed to inflate only once. After it inflates, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system. If you don’t get them, the air bag system won’t be there to help protect you in another crash. A new system will include the air bag module and possibly other parts. The service manual has information about the need to replace other parts. Let only qualified technicians work on your air bag system. Improper service can mean that your air bag system won’t work properly. See your dealer for sewice.

Sewicing Your Cadillac with the Air Bag System Please tell or remind anyone who works on your Cadillac that it has the air bag system. There are parts of the air bag system in several places around your vehicle. You don’t want the system to inflate while someone is working on your vehicle. The air bag system does not need regular maintenance. Your Cadillac dealer and the 1993 Cadillac Service Manual have information about the air bag system, including repair or disposal.

A CAUTION:

For up to 2 minutes after the ignition key is turned off and the battery disconnected, an air bag can still inflate during improper service. You can be injured if you are close to an air bag when it inflates. Be sure to follow the proper service procedures.

When electrical work is done under the hood or inside your vehicle, the ignition should be in “Lock” if possible.

Avoid wires wrapped with yellow tape, or yellow connectors. They are probably part of the air bag system. But if the ignition has to be on for electrical work, or if the steering

- column is to be disassembled, the air bag system must be disconnected.

To do this: 0 Turn off the ignition. 0 Remove the SIR (air bag) fuse. (See “Fuses and Circuit Breakers” in

the Index.)

0 Disconnect the yellow connector at the base of the steering column. When the work is complete, if the air bag system was disconnected, be sure to reattach everything and replace the fuse before turning the ignition on. When you turn the ignition key on, be sure you see the air bag readiness light on the instrument panel. If you don’t see this light flash and then go out as usual, have your air bag system repaired.

I__ SAFETYBELT USE DUMNG PREGNANCY

Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all

- occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they don’t wear

safety belts. A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible throughout the pregnancy.

The best way to protect the fett 1s is to motect the mother. Wh en a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly. RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER POSITION

The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same way as the driver’s safety belt. See “Driver Position,’’ earlier in this part. When the lap portion of the belt is pulled out all the way, it will lock. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again. If your vehicle has a center passenger position, be Be sure to use the correct buckle when buckling your lap-shoulder belt. If you find that the latch plate will not go fully into the buckle, see if you are using the buckle for the center passenger position.

__

Lap Belt If your vehicle has front and rear bench seats, someone can sit in the center positions.

When you sit in a center seating position, you have a lap safety belt, which has no retractor. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt.

Buckle, position and release it the same way as the lap part of a lap-shoulder belt. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle faces upward or outward so you would be able to unbuckle it quickly if you ever had to. REAR SEAT PASSENGERS It’s very important for rear seat passengers to buckle up! Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who aren’t safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle - in a crash. And they can strike others in the vehicle who are wearing safety belts.
