the seat belt

The light and buzzer act as a reminder to have the front passenger buckle up the seat belt. Once the ignition key is turned to “ON” or “START”, the reminder light flashes if a passenger sits in the front passenger seat and does not fasten the seat belt. If the vehicle speed rises above 15 km/h (9 mph) with the seat belt unfastened, the buzzer will sound for 10 seconds. Then, if the buzzer will sound in a different tone for 20 seconds. Even the vehicle speed drops below 15 km/h (9 mph), the buzzer will continue to sound. To stop the buzzer, fasten the seat belt. If the buzzer still sounds, make sure the driver’s seat belt is fastened. If luggage or other load is placed on the front passenger seat, depending on its weight, the reminder light may flash and buzzer to sound.

CAUTION

For manual transmission: Never remove the key when the ve- hicle is moving, as this will lock the steering wheel and result in loss of steering control.

NOTICE

Do not leave the key in the “ON” position if the engine is not running. The battery will discharge and the ignition could be damaged.

“LOCK”—Engine is off and the steering wheel is locked. The key can be re- moved only at this position. You must push in the key to turn it from “ACC” to the “LOCK” position. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the selec- tor lever must be in the “P” position be- fore pushing the key. Once you remove the key, the engine im- mobilizer system is automatically set. (See “Engine immobilizer system” on page 12
in Section 1−2.) When starting the engine, the key may seem stuck at the “LOCK” position. To free it, first be sure the key is pushed all the way in, and then rock the steering wheel slightly while turning the key gently. Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from underneath the luggage compartment for several minutes. This is normal opera- tion and does not indicate a malfunction. (See “Leak detection pump” on page ix.) It is not a malfunction even if the needles on all meters and gauges move slightly when turned the “ACC”, “ON” or “START” position.

Recommended shifting speeds The transmission is fully synchronized and upshifting or downshifting is easy. For fuel economy and vehicle performance, you should upshift or downshift at the following speeds:

the best compromise between

Gear

Downshift to the appropriate gear if accel- eration is needed when you are cruising below the above downshifting speeds. Upshifting too too soon or downshifting late will cause lugging and, possibly, ping- ing. Regularly revving the engine to maxi- mum speed in each gear will cause ex- cessive engine wear and high fuel consumption.

Maximum allowable speeds To get on a highway or to pass slower traffic, maximum acceleration may be nec- essary. Make sure you observe the follow- ing maximum allowable speeds in each gear:

Vehicle stability control system The vehicle stability control system helps provide integrated control of the systems such as anti−lock brake sys- tem, traction control, engine control, etc. This system automatically controls the brakes and engine to help prevent the vehicle from skidding when corner- ing on a slippery road surface or oper- ating steering wheel abruptly. The vehicle stability control system is acti- vated when your vehicle speed reaches or exceeds 15 km/h (9 mph), and is deacti- vated when the vehicle speed reduces to below 15 km/h (9 mph). You may hear a sound the engine compartment for a few seconds when the engine is started or just after the vehicle begins to move. This means that the sys- tem is in the self−check mode, but does not indicate a malfunction.

CAUTION

(cid:1) Do not rely excessively on the ve- hicle stability control system. Even if the vehicle stability control sys- tem is operating, you must always drive carefully and attentively to avoid serious injury. Reckless driv- ing will result in an unexpected ac- cident. light flashes, an alarm sounds, and spe- cial care should be taken while driving.

If you use the tires other than specified, or different type or size, the vehicle stability control system may not function correctly. When replacing the tires or wheels, contact your Toyota dealer. (See “Checking and replacing tires” on page 283 in Section 7−2.)

(cid:1) In situations where the road surface is covered with ice or snow, your vehicle should be fitted with snow tires or tire chains.

If you select the traction control off mode, the indicator light will come on again.

“VSC” warning light This light warns that there is a problem somewhere in the vehicle stability control system or the traction control system. The light will come on when the ignition key is turned to “ON” and will go off after a few seconds. If the light comes on while driving, the system does not work. However, as con- ventional braking operates when applied, there is no problem to continue your driv- ing.

tire pressure warning

If light comes on, be sure to observe the following precautions. Failure to do so could cause loss of vehicle control and result in death or serious injury. (cid:1) Stop your vehicle in a safe place as soon as possible. Adjust the tire inflation pressure immediately. (cid:1) If the tire pressure warning

light comes on even after tire inflation pressure adjustment, it is probable that you have a flat tire. Check the tires. If the tire is flat, change to the spare tire and have the flat tire repaired by the nearest Toyota deal- er.

(cid:1) Avoid abrupt maneuvering and bra- king. If the vehicle tires deteriorate, you could lose control of the steer- ing wheel or the brakes.

The tire pressure warning light may turn on due to natural causes such as natural air leaks or tire inflation pressure changes caused by temperature. In this case, ad- justing the tire inflation pressure will turn off the light after a few minutes.

Pushing the tire pressure warning reset switch should not turn off the tire pressure warning light. Adjusting the tire inflation pressure will turn off the light. The compact spare tire is not equipped with the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. If a tire goes flat, the warning light will not turn off even though the flat tire is replaced with the spare tire. Re- place the spare tire with the repaired tire and adjust the proper tire inflation pressur- e. The tire pressure warning light will turn off after a few minutes.

CAUTION

Each tire, including the spare (if pro- vided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label (tire and load information label). (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label (tire and load information label), you should determine the proper tire infla- tion pressure for those tires.)

Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunction indicator to indi- cate when the system is not operat- ing properly. The TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pres- sure (tire pressure warning telltale light). When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subse- quent vehicle start−ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the mal- function indicator is illuminated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.

from

TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS (tire pressure warning sys- tem) functioning properly. Al- ways check the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS (tire pressure warning system) to continue to func- tion properly.

As an added safety feature, your ve- hicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS– tire pressure warning system) that il- luminates a low tire pressure telltale (low tire pressure warning light) when one or more of your tires is signifi- cantly under−inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale (low tire pressure warning light) illu- minates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under−in- flated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under− inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle’s handling and stopping abili- ty. Please note that the TPMS (tire pres- sure warning system) is not a substi- tute for proper tire maintenance, and it to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under−inflation has not reached the level illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale (low tire pressure warning light).

Before driving, be sure the parking brake is fully released and the park- ing brake reminder light is off.

Cruise control The cruise control is designed to main- tain a set cruising speed without requir- ing the driver to operate the accelera- tor. Cruising speed can be set to any speed above 40 km/h (25 mph). Within the limits of the engine’s capabili- ties, cruising speed can be maintained up or down grades. However, changes in ve- hicle speed may occur on steeper grades.

CAUTION

(cid:1) To help maintain maximum control of your vehicle, do not use the cruise control when driving in heavy or varying traffic, or on slip- pery (rainy, icy or snow−covered) or winding roads.

If you need acceleration—for example, when passing—depress the accelerator pedal enough for the vehicle to exceed the set speed. When you release it, the vehicle will return to the speed set prior to the acceleration.

CAUTION

For manual transmission: While driving with the cruise control on, do not shift to neutral without depressing the clutch pedal, as this may cause engine racing or overrev- ving.

CANCELLING THE CRUISE CONTROL The cruise control may be temporarily cancelled by the driver or by the system itself under certain circumstances. Tempo- rary cancellation allows the set cruising speed to remain in memory. The cruise control can be temporarily can- celled by doing the following: (cid:1) Pulling the lever in the “CANCEL” di-

rection and releasing it

SETTING THE CRUISING SPEED On vehicles with automatic transmission, the transmission must be in “D” before you set the cruising speed. Bring your vehicle to the desired speed, push the lever down in the “− SET” direc- tion and release it. This sets the vehicle at that speed. If the speed is not satisfac- tory, tap the lever up for a faster speed, or tap it down for a slower speed. Each tap changes the set speed by 1.6 km/h (1.0 mph). You can now take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Tone How good an audio program sounds to you is largely determined by the mix of the treble, midrange (on some models of type 2) and bass levels. In fact, different kinds of music and vocal programs usually sound better with different mixes of treble, midrange and bass. Balance A good balance of the left and right stereo channels and of the front and rear sound levels is also important. Keep in mind that if you are listening to a stereo recording or broadcast, changing the right/left balance will increase the vol- ume of one group of sounds while de- creasing the volume of another. YOUR RADIO ANTENNA Your vehicle has a mast type antenna. To remove the antenna, carefully turn it counterclockwise.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the antenna, make sure it is removed before driv- ing your Toyota through an automatic car wash.
