왔 Automatic transmission For more information on driving with an automatic transmission, see “Automatic transmission” (컄 page 54). Your vehicle’s transmission adapts its gear shifting process to your individual driving style by continually adjusting the shift points up or down. These shift point adjust- ments are performed based on current operating and driving conditions. If the operating conditions change, the automatic transmission reacts by adjusting its shift program.
i During the brief warm-up, transmission upshifting is delayed. This allows the catalytic converter (gasoline engine) or the oxidation catalyst (diesel engine) to heat up more quickly to operating temperature.

Gear selector lever
Make sure that absolutely no objects are obstructing the pedal’s range of movement. Keep the driver’s footwell clear of all obsta- cles. If there are any floormats or carpets in the footwell, make sure that the pedals still have sufficient clearance.
During sudden driving or braking maneuvers the objects could get caught between the pedals. You could then no longer brake or accelerate. This could lead to accidents and injury.
The gear selector lever is located on the right of the steering column.

Transmission positions
The current transmission position appears in the multifunction display.
1 Current transmission position
! If the current transmission position does not appear in the multifunction display due to a malfunction, for example, make sure that the automatic transmission is in the desired position by carefully driving off with the transmission in drive position D. ML 63 AMG: Select program mode C (컄 page 195). Do not limit the gear range.
Effect
ì Park position
Shift into park position P only when vehicle is stopped. The park position is not intended to serve as a brake when the vehi- cle is parked. Rather, the driver should always set the parking brake in addition to shifting into park position P to secure the vehicle. If the vehicle’s electrical system is malfunctioning, the automatic transmission could remain locked in park position P. 왘 Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible by an autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.
Controls in detail Automatic transmission
! SmartKey: If you turn off the engine using the SmartKey and remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, the transmission will shift to park position P automatically. Keep in mind that turning off the engine with the SmartKey alone will not auto- matically shift the transmission to park position P. Only when the SmartKey is removed from the starter switch, will the transmission automatically shift to park position P. KEYLESS-GO*: If you turn off the engine using the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button and open the driver’s door, the transmission will shift to park position P auto- matically. Keep in mind that turning off the en- gine using the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button alone will not automatically shift the transmis- sion to park position P. Only when the driver’s door is opened, will the transmission automati- cally shift to park position P. Even though this is possible, make it a practice to always shift into park position P before turning off the engine and removing the SmartKey from the starter switch, or when using KEYLESS-GO*, before turning off the engine with the start/stop button and opening the driver’s door.
189
Controls in detail Automatic transmission
! If you want the gear position to remain in neutral position N (for example when the vehicle is pulled through a car wash) 앫 do not remove the SmartKey from the starter
switch
or, when using KEYLESS-GO* 앫 do not turn off the engine using the
KEYLESS-GO start/stop button* and open the driver’s door
Otherwise, the transmission will shift to park position P and lock the wheels, preventing the vehicle from being pulled through a car wash.
Effect
í Reverse gear
Shift into reverse gear R only when the vehicle is stopped.
190
Effect
ë Neutral
No power is transmitted from the engine to the drive axle. When the brakes are released, the vehicle can be moved freely (pushed or towed). To avoid damage to the trans- mission, avoid shifting into neutral position N while driving, except: If the ESP® is deactivated or malfunctioning: Shift into neutral position N only when the vehicle is in danger of skidding, e.g. on icy roads.
ê Drive
The transmission shifts automatically. All forward gears are available.
! Coasting the vehicle, or driving for any other reason in neutral position N can result in trans- mission damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.
Warning!
Getting out of your vehicle without shifting into park position P is dangerous. Also, park position P alone is not intended to or capa- ble of preventing your vehicle from moving, possibly hitting people or objects.
Always set the parking brake in addition to shifting to position P (컄 page 65). When parked on an incline, turn the front wheels towards the road curb.
Do not park this vehicle in areas where com- bustible materials such as grass, hay or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system, as these materials could be ignited and cause a vehicle fire.
Warning!
Driving tips
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat- tended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Children could shift the automatic transmission out of park position P, which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
Accelerator position Your driving style influences the transmission’s shifting behavior: Less throttle More throttle
Earlier upshifting Later upshifting
Kickdown Use kickdown when you want maximum acceleration. 왘 Press the accelerator past the point of
resistance. Depending on the engine speed the transmission shifts into a lower gear.
왘 Ease on the accelerator when you have
reached the desired speed. The transmission shifts up again.
Controls in detail Automatic transmission
Stopping When you stop briefly, e.g. at traffic lights: 왘 Leave the transmission in gear. 왘 Hold the vehicle with the brake. When you stop for a longer period of time with the engine idling and/or on a hill: 왘 Set the parking brake. 왘 Shift into park position P.
Maneuvering When you maneuver in tight areas, e.g. when pulling into a parking space: 왘 Control the vehicle speed by gradually
releasing the brakes.
왘 Accelerate gently. 왘 Never abruptly step on the accelerator.

Controls in detail Automatic transmission
Rocking the vehicle Rocking the vehicle by shifting between drive position D and reverse gear R can help free a vehicle stuck in mud or snow. The engine control system of this vehicle electronically limits shifting between drive position D and reverse gear R to very low speeds, i.e. approx. 5 mph (9 km/h). To shift between drive position D and reverse gear R, move the gear selector lever past the resistance point up or down.
Working on the vehicle
Warning!
When working on the vehicle, set the parking brake and shift to park position P. Otherwise the vehicle could roll away.
Hill start assist system
Warning!
The hill start assist system is not designed to function as a parking brake and does not prevent the vehicle from moving when parked on an incline.
Always set the parking brake in addition to shifting to park position P.
On uphill grades with a gradient angle of more than 5°, the hill start assist system maintains the pressure in the brake sys- tem for approximately 1 second after you have released the brake pedal. Therefore, you can start off smoothly without the vehicle moving immediately after releasing the brake pedal.
The hill start assist system is inactive 앫 when starting off on a level road or
downhill grades
앫 with the transmission in neutral
position N
앫 with the parking brake set 앫 if the ESP® has switched off due to a
malfunction
Towing a trailer If you tow a trailer, note the following points: 앫 Manually shift to a lower gear range
(컄 page 193) if the transmission hunts between gears on inclines. A lower gear range and reduction of speed reduces the chance to overload or overheat the engine.
For more information on trailer towing, see the “Operation” section (컄 page 342).

The climate control is operational whenev- er the engine is running. You can operate the climate control system in either the automatic or manual mode. The system cools or heats the interior depending on the selected interior temperature and the current outside temperature.
Nearly all dust particles, pollutants and odors are filtered out before outside air en- ters the passenger compartment through the air distribution system. The air conditioning will not engage (no cooling) if the A/C mode is deactivated (컄 page 216).
Warning!
Warning!
Follow the recommended settings for heat- ing and cooling given on the following pag- es. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.
When operating the climate control, the air that enters the passenger compartment through the air vents can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set temperature). This may cause burns or frostbite to unpro- tected skin in the immediate area of the air vents.
Always keep sufficient distance between un- protected parts of the body and the air vents. If necessary, use the air distribution controls (컄 page 208) to direct the air to air vents in the vehicle interior that are not in the immediate area of unprotected skin.
Controls in detail Climate control
i Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior. If the vehicle interior is hot, ventilate the interior before driving off, see “Summer opening fea- ture” (컄 page 239). The climate control will then adjust the interior temperature to the set value much faster. Keep the air intake grille in front of the wind- shield free of snow and debris.

The automatic climate control is a 3-zone intelligent automatic climate control sys- tem. Your vehicle interior is divided into 3 zones.
Warning!
When operating the automatic climate con- trol, the air that enters the passenger com- partment through the air vents can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set tem- perature). This may cause burns or frostbite to unprotected skin in the immediate area of the air vents.
Always keep sufficient distance between un- protected parts of the body and the air vents. If necessary, use the air distribution controls (컄 page 222) to direct the air to air vents in the vehicle interior that are not in the immediate area of unprotected skin.
Controls in detail 3-zone automatic climate control*
With the help of a sun sensor, the automat- ic climate control determines the relation of the sun to the vehicle and automatically adjusts the inside temperature for every individual zone. The automatic climate control is operation- al whenever the engine is running. It cools the vehicle’s interior according to the an- gle and intensity of the sun’s rays, the out- side temperature and the selected temperature. You can operate the auto- matic climate control in either the auto- matic or manual mode. Nearly all dust particles, pollutants and odors are filtered out before outside air en- ters the passenger compartment through the air distribution system.
