switch 1. The ESP® warning lamp v in the instrument cluster comes on. The ESP® is deactivated.

When the ESP® warning lamp v is illuminated continuously, the ESP® is switched off or is not operational due to a malfunction.

Adapt your speed and driving to the prevail- ing road conditions and to the non-operating status of the ESP®.

! Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an ex- tended period of time with the ESP® switched off. This may cause serious damage to the drivetrain which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

Switching on the ESP® 왘 Press ESP® switch 1.

The ESP® warning lamp v in the instrument cluster goes out. You are now again in normal driving mode.

The ESP® Trailer Stabilization is functional at vehicle speeds above approximately 40 mph (65 km/h) when the ESP® is switched on.

Warning

The system will not be able to assist when the trailer jackknifes 앫 on wet or icy roads 앫 on roads with slippery surface 앫 in sand or gravel Trailers with a high center of gravity may tip over before the system recognizes swaying of the trailer.

EBP

The EBP enhances braking effectiveness by allowing the rear brakes to supply a greater proportion of the braking effort without a loss of vehicle stability.

Warning!

If the EBP is malfunctioning, the brake sys- tem is still functioning. However, the rear wheels may lock during hard braking, caus- ing you to lose control over the vehicle and possibly causing an accident. Adjust your driving style to the non-operating status of the EBP.

i If the ESP® has switched off due to a mal- function, ESP® cannot stabilize the rig.

Off-road – ESP® With the off-road driving program switched on (컄 page 268), the ESP® designed for off-road use is automatically activated. At speeds below 27 mph (45 km/h), the ESP® assists in over-/understeering, thus improving vehicle traction.

ESP® Trailer Stabilization If the trailer you are towing should begin to sway, the rig can only be stabilized by immediately applying the brakes hard. Steering during this maneuver will not help to stabilize the rig. ESP® will assist you in such situations. ESP® recognizes when the trailer starts swaying and will apply the brakes to re- duce the vehicle speed to a non-critical speed that allows the vehicle-trailer combi- nation to stabilize.

4-ETS

The 4-Electronic Traction System (4-ETS) improves the vehicle’s ability to utilize available traction, especially under slippery road conditions. The brakes are applied to the spinning wheel and power is transferred to the wheel(s) with traction. The ESP® warning lamp v in the instru- ment cluster, starts to flash at any vehicle speed, as soon as a tire loses traction and the wheel begins to spin.

i If conditions require, switch on off-road driving program (컄 page 268).

Warning!

When you see ESP® warning lamp v flashing in the instrument cluster, then pro- ceed as follows: 앫 While driving off, apply as little throttle

as possible.

앫 While driving, ease up on the accelera-

tor.

앫 Adapt your speed and driving style to

the prevailing road conditions.

Failure to observe these guidelines could cause the vehicle to skid.

The 4-ETS cannot prevent accidents resul- ting from excessive speed.

! Operational or performance test must only be conducted on a two-axle dynanometer. If such tests are necessary, contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center. You could otherwise seriously damage the brake system or the transfer case which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

! Because the ESP® operates automatically, the engine and ignition must be shut off (SmartKey in starter switch position 0 or 1 or KEYLESS-GO* start/stop button in position 0 or 1) when testing the brakes on a brake test dynamometer and such testing should be no longer than 10 seconds. Active braking action through the ESP® may otherwise seriously damage the brake system which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

i If the yellow ESP® warning lamp v comes on while driving, the 4-ETS is being switched off temporarily to prevent overheating of the drive wheel brakes. In addition, the message ESP inoperative See Operator’s Manual appears in the multifunction display.

Off-road - 4-ETS With the off-road driving program switched on (컄 page 268), the 4-ETS designed for off-road use is automatically activated.

왔 Anti-theft systems Immobilizer

The immobilizer prevents unauthorized persons from starting your vehicle.

Activating

With the SmartKey 왘 Remove the SmartKey from the starter

switch.

With KEYLESS-GO* 왘 Press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button (컄 page 41) on the starter switch once. The engine is turned off. 왘 Open the driver’s door.

Deactivating

Anti-theft alarm system

With the SmartKey 왘 Turn the SmartKey in the starter switch

to position 2 (컄 page 39).

With KEYLESS-GO* 왘 Switch on the ignition (컄 page 40).

i Starting the engine will also deactivate the immobilizer. In case the engine cannot be started (yet the vehicle’s battery is charged), the system is not operational. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center or call 1-800-FOR-MERCedes (in the USA), or 1-800-387-0100 (in Canada).

Once the alarm system has been armed, a visual and audible alarm is triggered when someone opens 앫 a door 앫 the tailgate 앫 the hood The alarm will stay on, even if the activat- ing element (a door, for example) is imme- diately closed. The alarm system will also be triggered when 앫 the vehicle is opened with the mechan-

i If the alarm stays on for more than 30 seconds, a call to the Response Center is initiated automatically by the Tele Aid* system (컄 page 308) provided that the Tele Aid* service was subscribed to and properly activated, and that necessary cellular service and GPS cover- age are available.

Arming the alarm system The alarm system is armed after you have locked the vehicle with the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*. The alarm system indicator lamp is located to the lower left of the hazard warning flasher.

왘 Make sure all doors and the tailgate are

closed.

왘 Lock the vehicle (컄 page 68).

The turn signal lamps flash three times to indicate that the vehicle is locked. The alarm system is armed within ap- proximately 10 seconds. Alarm system indicator lamp 1 flashes.

i If the turn signal lamps do not flash three times, one of the following elements may not be properly closed: 앫 a door 앫 the tailgate Close the respective element and lock the vehicle again.

Disarming the alarm system 왘 Unlock the vehicle (컄 page 38).

The turn signal lamps flash once to indicate that the alarm system is disarmed. Indicator lamp 1 goes out.

i The alarm system will rearm automatically again after approximately 40 seconds if neither a door nor the tailgate is opened.

SmartKey

Your vehicle comes supplied with two SmartKeys, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The locking tabs for the mechanical key portion of the two SmartKeys are a differ- ent color to help distinguish each SmartKey unit. The SmartKey provides an extended oper- ating range. To prevent theft, however, it is advisable to only unlock the vehicle when you are in close proximity to it. ! If you cannot lock or unlock the vehicle with the SmartKey, the batteries in the SmartKey are discharged, the SmartKey is malfunctioning, or the vehicle battery is drained. 앫 Check the batteries in the SmartKey and replace them if necessary (컄 page 480).

앫 Use the mechanical key to unlock the

driver’s door (컄 page 475).

앫 Lock the vehicle as described in the

“Practical hints” section (컄 page 476).

앫 Have the vehicle battery and the vehicle

battery connections checked (컄 page 507).

If the SmartKey is malfunctioning, contact Roadside Assistance or an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Checking the batteries 왘 Press button ‹ or Œ.

Battery check lamp 5 (컄 page 108) comes on briefly to indicate that the SmartKey batteries are in order.

i If battery check lamp 5 does not come on briefly during check, the SmartKey batteries are discharged. Replace the batteries (컄 page 480). You can obtain the required batteries at any authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

i If the batteries are checked within signal range of the vehicle, pressing the button ‹ or Œ will lock or unlock the vehicle accordingly.

Unlocking and opening the tailgate (Vehicles with power tailgate*) You can unlock and open the tailgate sep- arately. A minimum height clearance of 7.2 ft (2.20 m) is required to open the tailgate. 왘 Press and hold button Š on the

SmartKey until the tailgate unlocks and begins to open.

! The tailgate swings open upwards automat- ically. Always make sure there is sufficient over- head clearance. To stop the opening procedure, press button Š on the SmartKey. The tailgate stops moving.

i If the vehicle was previously centrally locked with the SmartKey, the tailgate will lock automat- ically when closed. The turn signals will flash three times to confirm locking.

Loss of SmartKey or mechanical key If you lose a SmartKey or mechanical key, you should do the following: 왘 Have the SmartKey deactivated by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

왘 Report the loss of the SmartKey or the

mechanical key immediately to your car insurance company.

왘 If necessary, have the mechanical lock

replaced.

Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center will be glad to supply you with a replacement.

SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*

Vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO come with two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The locking tabs for the mechanical key portion of the two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO are a different color to help distinguish each SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO unit. The KEYLESS-GO function is integrated into the SmartKey. On these vehicles, the validity of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is checked when you grasp an outside door handle. SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO must be located outside the vehicle within ap- proximately 3 ft (1 m) of the respective door or the tailgate.

앫 In order to start the engine with the

SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO: 앫 The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO

must be located in the vehicle.

앫 The KEYLESS-GO start/stop button

must be inserted in the starter switch (컄 page 41).

앫 The brake pedal must be firmly de- pressed. Do not depress the accel- erator.

앫 If the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is positioned farther away from the vehi- cle, the system may no longer recog- nize the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO. The vehicle then cannot be locked or the engine started via the KEYLESS-GO system.

Possibility 1 (One SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO in the vehicle, one SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO outside the vehicle): If you leave the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO behind when exiting and locking the vehicle, no message appears in the multifunction display. Possibility 2 (One SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO in the vehicle, no SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO outside the vehicle): When exiting and trying to lock the vehicle, the message Key detected in vehicle will appear in the multifunction display. The vehicle will not be locked.

Factory setting

i If the vehicle has been parked for more than 72 hours, you must pull an outside door handle in order to activate the KEYLESS-GO function.

tive rear door to unlock door.

spective rear door to open door.

Opening the doors from the inside

You can open a locked door from the in- side. Open door only when conditions are safe to do so.

Opening the tailgate

Opening the tailgate from the outside A minimum height clearance of 7.0 ft (2.13 m) is required to open the tailgate. Vehicles with vehicle level control*: Depending on the set vehicle level a mini- mum height clearance of 7.2 ft (2.20 m) is required to open the tailgate. The handle is located above the rear license plate recess.

i Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO*: The vehicle must be unlocked (컄 page 38). Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*: When opening the tailgate, the vehicle is globally unlocked. 왘 Pull on the handle.

The tailgate opens slightly.

왘 Pull tailgate upwards to open.

! The tailgate swings open upwards automat- ically. Always make sure there is sufficient over- head clearance. Vehicles with power tailgate*: To stop the opening procedure, press button Š on the SmartKey. The tailgate stops moving.

Locking and unlocking from the inside

You can lock or unlock the doors and the tailgate from inside using the central lock- ing or unlocking switch. This can be useful, for example, if you want to lock the vehicle before starting to drive. The fuel filler flap cannot be locked or un- locked with the central locking or unlock- ing switch.

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Front seat active head restraints

For your protection, drive only with properly positioned head restraints.

Adjust the head restraint so that it is close to the head as possible and the center of the head restraint supports the back of the head at eye level. This will reduce the potential for injury to the head and neck in the event of an accident or similar situation.

You cannot remove the active head restraints on the driver’s and front passenger’s seat. For removal of the active head restraints we recommend that you contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center. For information on head restraint adjust- ment, see “Seats” (컄 page 43). Rear seat head restraints

Warning!

Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints installed when the rear seats are occupied. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident.

With a rear seat occupied, make sure to move the respective head restraint up from the lowest non-use position and have the oc- cupant adjust the head restraint properly.

For your protection, drive only with properly positioned head restraints.

Lumbar support

Multicontour seat*

The curvature of the driver’s seat can be adjusted to help enhance lower back sup- port and seating comfort. The lever for lumbar support adjustment is located on the right hand side of the driver’s seat backrest.

The multicontour seat has an extendable seat cushion and inflatable air chambers built into the backrest to provide additional lumbar and side support. The seat cushion depth, seat backrest cushion-height and curvature can be con- tinuously varied with switches on the in- side of each front seat base after the ignition is switched on (컄 page 39).

Prior to operating the vehicle, the driver should check and adjust the seat height, seat position fore and aft, and seat back- rest angle if necessary, to ensure adequate control, reach and comfort. The head restraint should also be adjusted for proper height. See also the section on air bags (컄 page 71) for proper seat posi- tioning. In addition, adjust the steering wheel to ensure adequate control, reach, operation and comfort. Both the interior and exterior rear view mirrors should be adjusted for adequate rear vision. Fasten seat belts. Infants and small chil- dren should be seated in a properly se- cured restraint system that complies with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Stan- dard 213 and 225 and Canadian Motor Ve- hicle Safety Standards 213 and 210.2.

The automatic headlamp feature is only an aid to the driver. The driver is responsible for the operation of the vehicle’s lights at all times.

When the engine is running, the low beam headlamps, the tail and parking lamps, the license plate lamps, and the side marker lamps will switch on and off automatically.

Fog lamps

Combination switch

i The corner-illuminating front fog lamps will only come on in low ambient lighting conditions. If you are driving faster than 25 mph (40 km/h) or have the front fog lamps switched on, the corner-illuminating function is not available.
