Many cleaning products can be hazardous. Some are poisonous, others are flammable. Always follow the instructions on the partic- ular container. Always open your vehicle’s doors or windows when cleaning the inside.

Never use fluids or solvents that are not de- signed for cleaning your vehicle.

While in operation, even while parked, your vehicle is subjected to varying external in- fluences which, if gone unchecked, can at- tack the paintwork as well as the underbody and cause lasting damage.

Such damage is caused not only by ex- treme and varying climatic conditions, but also by: ì•« Air pollution ì•« Road salt ì•« Tar, gravel and stone chipping To avoid paint damage, you should imme- diately remove: ì•« Grease and oil ì•« Fuel ì•« Coolant ì•« Brake fluid ì•« Bird droppings ì•« Insects ì•« Tree resins, etc.

Frequent washing reduces and/or elimi- nates the aggressiveness and potency of the above adverse influences. More frequent washings are necessary to deal with unfavorable conditions, for ex- ample: ì•« Near the ocean ì•« In industrial areas (smoke, exhaust

emissions)

ì•« During winter operation You should check your vehicle from time to time for stone chipping or other damage. Any damage should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent corrosion. In doing so, do not neglect the underbody of the vehicle. A prerequisite for a thor- ough check is a washing of the underbody followed by a thorough inspection. Dam- aged areas need to be re-undercoated.

Operation Vehicle care

Your vehicle has been treated at the facto- ry with a wax-base rustproofing in the body cavities which will last for the lifetime of the vehicle. Post-production treatment is neither necessary nor recommended by Mercedes-Benz because of the possibility of incompatibility between materials used in the production process and others ap- plied later. We have selected car-care products and compiled recommendations which are specially matched to our vehicles and which always reflect the latest technology. You can obtain Mercedes-Benz approved car-care products at your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Scratches, corrosive deposits, corrosion or damage due to negligent or incorrect care cannot always be removed or repaired with the car-care products recommended here. In such cases it is best to seek aid at your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center. The following topics deal with the cleaning and care of your vehicle and give important “how-to” information as well as references to Mercedes-Benz approved car-care prod- ucts. Additional information can be found in the booklet entitled “Vehicle Care Guide”.

Power washer When using a power washer for cleaning the vehicle, always observe manufactur- er’s operating instructions.

Never use a round nozzle to power wash tires. The intense jet of water can result in damage to the tire. Always replace a damaged tire. Always keep the jet of water moving across the surface. Do not aim directly at electrical parts, electrical connec- tors, seals, or other rubber parts.

Tar stains Quickly remove tar stains before they dry and become more difficult to remove. A tar remover is recommended.

218

Operation Vehicle care

Paintwork, painted body components Mercedes-Benz approved Paint Care should be applied when water drops on the paint surface do not “bead up”, normally every 3 to 5 months, depending on climate and washing detergent used. Mercedes-Benz approved Paint Cleaner should be applied if the paint surface shows signs of dirt embedding (i.e. loss of gloss). Do not apply any of these products or wax if your vehicle is parked in the sun or if the hood is still hot. Use the appropriate MB-Touch-Up Stick for quick and provisional repairs of minor paint damage (i.e. chips from stones, vehi- cle doors, etc.).

Engine cleaning Prior to cleaning the engine compartment, make sure to protect electrical compo- nents and connectors from the intrusion of water and cleaning agents. Corrosion protection, such as MB Anticor- rosion Wax should be applied to the engine compartment after every engine cleaning. Before applying, all control linkage bush- ings and joints should be lubricated. The poly-V-belt and all pulleys should be pro- tected from any wax.

Vehicle washing Do not use hot water or wash your vehicle in direct sunlight. Use only a mild car wash detergent, such as Mercedes-Benz ap- proved Car Shampoo.

Thoroughly spray the vehicle with a dif- fused jet of water. Direct only a very weak spray towards the ventilation intake. Use plenty of water and rinse the sponge and chamois frequently. Rinse with clear water and thoroughly dry with a chamois. Do not allow cleaning agents to dry on the finish. Due to the width of the vehicle, fold in out- side mirrors prior to running the vehicle through an automatic car wash to prevent damage to the mirrors. In the winter, thoroughly remove all traces of road salt as soon as possible. When washing the underbody, do not for- get to clean the inner sides of the wheels.

219

Operation Vehicle care

Ornamental moldings For regular cleaning and care of very dirty chrome-plated parts, use a chrome clean- er.

Headlamps, tail lamps, turn signal lenses Use a mild car wash detergent, such as Mercedes-Benz approved Car Shampoo, with plenty of water. To prevent scratches, never apply strong force and use only a soft, non-scratchy cloth when cleaning the lenses. Do not at- tempt to wipe dirty lenses with a dry cloth or sponge.

220

Cleaning the Parktronic* system sensor

1 Parktronic system sensor Use a mild car wash detergent, such as Mercedes-Benz approved Car Shampoo, with plenty of water to clean the sensor 1. When using a steam cleaner or power washer, aim nozzle only briefly from a min- imum distance of 4 in. (10 cm) at sensors 1. To prevent scratches, never apply strong force and use only a soft, non-scratchy cloth when cleaning the sensor. Do not at- tempt to wipe dirty sensors with a dry cloth or sponge.

Wiper blades Clean the wiper blade inserts with a clean cloth and detergent solution.

For safety reasons, remove key from steering lock before cleaning the wiper blades, otherwise the wiper motor can suddenly turn on and cause injury.

Window cleaning Use a window cleaning solution on all glass surfaces. An automotive glass cleaner is recommended.

For safety reasons, switch off wipers and remove key from steering lock be- fore cleaning the windshield, otherwise the wiper motor can suddenly turn on and cause injury.

Light alloy wheels Mercedes-Benz approved Wheel Care should be used for regular cleaning of the light alloy wheels. If possible, clean wheels once a week with Mercedes-Benz approved Wheel Care, us- ing a soft bristle brush and a strong spray of water. Follow instructions on container.

Use only acid-free cleaning materials. The acid could lead to corrosion.

Instrument cluster Use a gentle dishwashing detergent or mild detergent for delicate fabrics as a washing solution. Wipe with a cloth moist- ened in lukewarm solution. Do not use scouring agents.

Operation Vehicle care

Steering wheel and gear selector lever Wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly or clean with Mercedes-Benz approved Leather Care.

Hard plastic trim items Pour Mercedes-Benz approved Interior Care onto soft lint-free cloth and apply with light pressure.

Cup holder Use a gentle dishwashing detergent or mild detergent for delicate fabrics as a washing solution. Wipe with a cloth moist- ened in lukewarm solution. Do not use scouring agents.

Headliner Clean with soft bristle brush, or use a dry-shampoo cleaner in case of excessive dirt.

Seat belts The webbing must not be treated with chemical cleaning agents. Use only clear, lukewarm water and soap. Do not dry the webbing at temperatures above 176°F (80°C) or in direct sunlight.

Warning!

Do not bleach or dye seat belts as this may severely weaken them. In a crash they may not be able to provide adequate protection.

221

MB Tex upholstery Pour Mercedes-Benz approved Interior Care onto soft lint-free cloth and apply with light pressure.

Plastic and rubber parts Do not use oil or wax on these parts.

Operation Vehicle care

Upholstery Using aftermarket seat covers or wearing clothing that have the tendency to give off coloring (e.g. when wet etc.) may cause the upholstery to become permanently dis- colored. By lining the seats with a proper intermediate cover, contact-discoloration will be prevented.

Leather upholstery Wipe leather upholstery with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly or clean with Mercedes-Benz approved Leather Care. Exercise particular care when cleaning per- forated leather as its underside should not become wet.

Bulbs

Replacing bulbs Safe vehicle operation depends on proper exterior lighting and signaling. It is there- fore essential that all bulbs and lamp as- semblies are in good working order at all times. Correct headlamp adjustment is extremely important. Have headlamps checked and readjusted at regular intervals and when a bulb has been replaced. See your autho- rized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center for headlamp adjustment.

If the headlamps are fogged up on the inside as a result of high humidity, driv- ing the vehicle a distance should clear out the fogging.

moving traffic on a hard surface.

왘 Turn on the hazard warning flashers. 왘 Engage the steering wheel lock in the

straight ahead position and set the parking brake.

왘 Move the selector lever to P. 왘 Have any passenger exit the vehicle at

a safe distance from the roadway.

왘 Take the spare wheel out of its carrier

(컄 page 239). ML 55 AMG: (컄 page 240).

Lifting the vehicle 왘 Prevent the vehicle from rolling away by blocking wheels with wheel chocks (not included) or other sizable objects. When changing wheel on a level surface: 왘 Place one chock in front of and one be- hind the wheel that is diagonally oppo- site to the wheel being changed.

When changing wheel on a hill: 왘 Place chocks on the downhill side

blocking both wheels of the other axle. 왘 Take the two-piece wheel wrench and the jack out of the rear compartment area (컄 page 237). Assemble wheel wrench.

Flat tire Mounting the spare wheel

Warning!

The dimensions of the spare wheel are dif- ferent from those of the road wheels. As a result, the vehicle handling characteristics change when driving with a mounted spare wheel. Adapt your driving style accordingly.

The spare wheel is for temporary use only. When driving with spare wheel mounted, en- sure proper tire pressure and do not exceed vehicle speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).

Drive to the nearest Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center as soon as possible to have the spare wheel replaced with a regular road wheel.

Never operate the vehicle with more than one spare wheel mounted.

255

Practical hints Flat tire

Warning!

The jack is designed exclusively for jacking up the vehicle at the jack take-up brackets built into both sides of the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury, use the jack only to lift the vehicle during a wheel change. Never get beneath the vehicle while it is supported by the jack. Keep hands and feet away from the area under the lifted vehicle. Always firmly set parking brake and block wheels before raising vehicle with jack.

Do not disengage parking brake while the vehicle is raised. Be certain that the jack is always vertical (plumb line) when in use, es- pecially on hills. Always try to use the jack on level surface. Make sure that the jack arm is fully seated in the jack take-up brack- et. Always lower the vehicle onto sufficient capacity jackstands before working under the vehicle.

256

왘 On wheel to be changed, loosen but do

not yet remove the wheel bolts (ap- proximately one full turn with wrench).

The jack take-up brackets are located di- rectly behind the front wheel housings and in front of the rear wheel housings.

Do not position the jack on the body of the vehicle, as this may cause damage to the vehicle.

1 Take-up bracket 2 Jack 왘 Place jack on firm ground. 왘 Position jack 2 under the take-up

bracket 1 so that it is always vertical (plumb-line) as seen from the side, even if the vehicle is parked on an in- cline.

왘 Jack up the vehicle until the wheel is a

maximum of 1.2 in (3 cm) from the ground. Never start engine while vehi- cle is raised.

Warning!

Warning!

ML 55 AMG: Inflate the spare wheel with collapsible tire only after the wheel is properly mounted.

Inflate the spare wheel tire using the electric air pump (컄 page 259) before lowering the vehicle.

To avoid paint damage, place wheel flat against hub and hold it there while in- stalling first wheel bolt.

Always replace wheel bolts that are dam- aged or rusted.

Never apply oil or grease to wheel bolts.

Damaged wheel hub threads should be re- paired immediately. Do not continue to drive under these circumstances! Contact an au- thorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center or call Roadside Assistance.

Incorrect mounting bolts or improperly tightened mounting bolts can cause the wheel to come off. This could cause an acci- dent. Be sure to use the correct mounting bolts.

Removing the wheel 왘 Unscrew and remove all wheel bolts. 왘 Remove the remaining bolts.

Do not place wheel bolts in sand or dirt. This could result in damage to the bolt and wheel hub threads.

왘 Grip the wheel from the sides and re-

move it.

Mounting the new wheel 왘 Clean contact surfaces of wheel and

wheel hub.

왘 Install spare wheel on wheel hub. 왘 Insert wheel bolts and tighten them

slightly.

Use only genuine equipment Mercedes-Benz wheel bolts. They are identi- fied by the Mercedes star. Other wheel bolts may come loose.

Do not tighten the wheel bolts when the ve- hicle is raised. Otherwise the vehicle could tip over.

Lowering the vehicle 왘 Lower vehicle by turning crank coun-

terclockwise until vehicle is resting ful- ly on its own weight.

왘 Remove the jack.

258

Warning!

Have the tightening torque checked after changing a wheel. The wheels could come loose if they are not tightened to a torque of 110 ft lb (150 Nm).

왘 Store jack and tool kit.

The removed road wheel cannot be stored in the spare wheel carrier or in- side the storage compartment in the rear cargo area (ML 55 AMG), but should be transported in the rear cargo compartment wrapped in a protective cover supplied with the vehicle. The protective cover is located in the rear cargo compartment behind the cover in the right side trim panel.

1 - 5 Wheel bolts 왘 Tighten the five wheel bolts evenly, fol- lowing the diagonal sequence illustrat- ed (1 to 5), until all bolts are tight. Observe a tightening torque of 110 ft lb (150 Nm).

Inflating the spare wheel with collapsible tire 왘 Take the electric air pump out of the

rear cargo compartment (컄 page 238).

Warning!

Observe instructions on air pump label.

wheel tire valve.

왘 Screw the union nut 1 with air hose 3

on to the tire valve.

왘 Insert electrical plug 2 into the electri- cal outlet in the front passenger foot- well or rear cargo compartment (컄 page 158).

왘 Start the engine. 왘 Switch on the air pump. 왘 Operate air pump until the pressure

gauge displays 61 psi (4.2 bar) This takes about eight minutes for the collapsible tire. The air hose 3 and the union nut 1 can become hot during in- flation. Please exercise appropriate caution.

Practical hints Flat tire

Do not operate the electric air pump longer than eight minutes without in- terruption. Otherwise it may overheat. You may operate the air pump again af- ter it has cooled off.

왘 Switch off the air pump. 왘 Turn off the engine. 왘 If the tire pressure is above 61 psi

(4.2 bar), release excess tire pressure using the vent screw 4.

259

왘 Detach the electric air pump. 왘 Reinstall tire valve cap. 왘 Store the electrical plug and the air

hose behind the flap and place the air pump back in the rear cargo compart- ment.

Practical hints Flat tire

Warning!

Follow recommended inflation pressures.

Do not overinflate tires. Overinflated tires can result in sudden deflation (blowout) be- cause they are more likely to become punc- tured or damaged by road debris, potholes etc.

Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated.

Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified vehicle capacity weight (as indicat- ed by the label on the driver’s door latch post). Overloading the tires can overheat them, possibly causing a blowout.
