After 5 minutes, the pressure gauge must display at least 26 psi (1.8 bar). The air hose can become hot during inflation. Please exercise appropriate caution. 왘 If this tire inflation pressure is not at- tained, turn off the electric air pump, detach the filler hose from the tire valve, and drive vehicle back and forth very slowly approximately 30 ft (10 m). This serves to better distribute the TIREFIT sealant material inside the tire.

왘 Unscrew the air pump’s air hose 5

from flange 6 of the TIREFIT contain- er.

왘 Screw air hose 5 onto tire valve 7. 왘 Inflate the tire again.

Warning!

If a tire inflation pressure of 26 psi (1.8 bar) is not attained, tire is too severely damaged for TIREFIT to provide a reliable tire repair.

In this case, TIREFIT cannot properly seal the tire.

Do not drive the vehicle.

Contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz Center or call Roadside Assistance.

왘 After attaining a tire inflation pressure of 26 psi (1.8 bar), press 0 on electric air pump switch 8. The electric air pump should now be switched off.

왘 After driving vehicle for an initial

10 minutes, check tire inflation pres- sure using the pressure gauge on the air pump.

Warning!

If tire inflation pressure has fallen below 20 psi (1.3 bar) do not continue to drive the vehicle.

Park your vehicle safely away from the road- way and contact the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or Roadside Assistance.

If tire inflation pressure is at least 20 psi (1.3 bar), inflate tire to correct pres- sure (see placard on the driver’s door B-pillar), and drive vehicle to nearest tire re- pair facility to have tire repaired or replaced.

Recommended duration of use: 300 miles (500 km) at 50 mph (80 km/h) with the recommended tire inflation pres- sure.

444

Warning!

Follow recommend inflation pressures.

Do not overinflate tires. Overinflating tires can result in sudden deflation (blowout) be- cause they are more likely to become punc- tured or damaged by road debris, potholes, etc.

Do not underinflate tires. Underinflated tires wear unevenly, adversely affect handling and fuel economy, and are more likely to fail from being overheated.

Do not overload the tires by exceeding the specified vehicle capacity weight (as indicat- ed by the label on the pillar in the driver’s door opening). Overloading the tires can overheat them, possibly causing a blowout.

왘 Visit an authorized Mercedes-Benz

Center as soon as possible to obtain a new TIREFIT kit.

왘 Press 0 on electric air pump switch 2. 왘 Turn the SmartKey in the starter switch

to position 0.

왘 If the tire pressure is above 51 psi

(3.5 bar), release excess tire pressure using the vent screw.

왘 Detach the electric air pump. 왘 Store the electrical plug 3 and the air hose 4 behind the flap 1 and place the electric air pump back in the desig-

terclockwise until vehicle is resting ful- ly on its own weight.

왘 Remove the jack.

1 - 5 Wheel bolts 왘 Tighten the five wheel bolts evenly, fol- lowing the diagonal sequence illustrat- ed (1 to 5), until all bolts are tight. Observe a tightening torque of 96 lb-ft (130 Nm).

Warning!

Have the tightening torque checked after changing a wheel. The wheels could come loose if they are not tightened to a torque of 96 lb-ft (130 Nm).

Before storing the jack, it should be fully collapsed, with handle folded in (storage position). 왘 Store the jack and the other vehicle

tools in the designated storage space underneath the cargo compartment floor (컄 page 419).

Wrap the damaged wheel in the protec- tive film that comes with the spare wheel and put the wheel in the cargo compartment. Do not activate the tire pressure moni- toring system* until the depressurized tire is no longer in the vehicle.

MOExtended system*

The MOExtended system allows you to continue driving your vehicle even if there is a total loss of pressure in one or more tires. You may only use the MOExtended system with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System* (TPMS*) (컄 page 335).

The maximum distance in emergency mode depends on the vehicle’s load. It is 30 miles (50 km) if the vehicle is par- tially loaded and 18 miles (30 km) if the vehicle is fully loaded. The point at which the maximum driv- ing distance begins in emergency mode is when the warning message appears in the multifunction display indicating that there is a loss of tire inflation pressure. Do not exceed the maximum speed of 50 mph (80 km/h).

Warning!

In emergency mode, your vehicle’s driving characteristics are diminished in such situa- tions as: 앫 driving around curves 앫 while braking 앫 while accelerating rapidly Therefore, your driving style must be adapt- ed accordingly. Avoid abrupt steering and driving maneuvers, as well as driving over obstacles (road curbs, potholes, or off-road areas). This is especially important if the ve- hicle is heavily loaded.

The emergency driving distance that can be achieved greatly depends on the demands placed on the vehicle. Depending on speed, load, driving maneuvers, road conditions, outside temperature, etc., the distance can be significantly shorter or, if the vehicle is driven cautiously, somewhat longer.

Practical hints Flat tire

Do not continue driving in emergency mode if 앫 you notice knocking sounds 앫 the vehicle starts to shake 앫 smoke develops and you smell rubber 앫 ESP® is intervening continuously 앫 you notice tears on the tire sidewalls After driving in emergency mode, you must have the rims inspected by an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center to check if they are suitable for further use. The failed tire must be replaced in any case.

When replacing individual or all tires on the vehicle, make sure only matching tires marked with “MOExtended” are mounted in the size specified for your vehicle.

451

Practical hints Batteries

Your vehicle is equipped with two batter- ies: 앫 Main battery (battery for starter and electrical consumers; located in the cargo compartment).

앫 Auxiliary battery (back-up battery; sta- bilizes the electrical system if the main battery is discharged; located in the en- gine compartment).

The main battery is located in the cargo compartment on the right-hand side under a cover.

Warning!

Disconnecting the battery

The electrohydraulic brake system requires electrical power to operate.

A malfunction in the vehicle’s power supply or electrical system may impair brake sys- tem operation and switch it into its emer- gency operation mode. The same applies if battery is disconnected. To brake, the driver must then apply significantly greater brake pedal pressure and depress the pedal much further to obtain the expected braking ef- fect. If necessary, apply full pressure to the brake pedal. Brakes may only be applied to the front wheels. Stopping distance is in- creased! Adjust your driving style according- ly. For more information, refer to “Electrohydraulic brake system” (컄 page 96).

Practical hints Jump starting

Warning!

Failure to follow these directions will cause damage to the electronic components, and can lead to a battery explosion and severe injury or death.

Never lean over batteries while connecting or jump starting, you might get injured.

Battery fluid contains sulfuric acid. Do not allow this fluid to come in contact with eyes, skin or clothing. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary.

A battery will also produce hydrogen gas, which is flammable and very explosive. Keep flames or sparks away from battery, avoid improper connection of jumper cables, smoking, etc.

Attempting to jump start a frozen battery can result in it exploding, causing personal injury.

Read all instructions before proceeding.

If the battery is discharged, the engine can be started with jumper cables and the bat- tery of another vehicle. Observe the follow- ing: 앫 Jump starting should only be performed

when the engine and catalytic converter are cold.

앫 Do not start the engine if the battery is

frozen. Let the battery thaw out first.

앫 Only jump start from batteries with the same voltage rating (12 V). Jump start- ing with a more powerful battery could damage the vehicle’s electrical system, which will not be covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

앫 Use only jumper cables with sufficient

cross-section and insulated terminal clamps.

앫 Always make sure the jumper cables

are not on or near pulleys, fans or other parts that move when the engine is started or running.

Jump starting may only be performed on the designated jump start terminals located in the engine compartment (컄 page 457). Avoid repeated and lengthy starting at- tempts. Do not attempt to start the engine us- ing a battery quick charge unit. If the engine does not run after several unsuccessful starting attempts, have it checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center. Excessive unburned fuel generated by repeated failed starting attempts may damage the catalytic converter. Make sure the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. Make sure the cable clamps do not touch any other metal part while the other end is still attached to a battery.

457

Practical hints Towing the vehicle

Mercedes-Benz recommends that the vehi- cle be transported with all wheels off the ground using flatbed or appropriate wheel lift/dolly equipment. This method is pref- erable to other types of towing.

Use flatbed or wheel lift/dolly equip- ment with SmartKey in starter switch turned to position 0. Do not tow with sling-type equipment. Towing with sling-type equipment over bumpy roads will damage radiator and supports. To prevent damage during transport, do not tie down vehicle by its chassis or suspension parts. Switch off the tow-away alarm and the automatic central locking. Do not tow-start the vehicle.

458

When circumstances do not permit the recommended towing methods, the vehi- cle may be towed with all wheels on the ground or front wheels raised (except vehi- cles with 4MATIC) only so far as necessary to have the vehicle moved to a safe loca- tion where the recommended towing methods can be employed.

Vehicles with 4MATIC: Do not tow with one axle raised. Doing so could damage the transfer case, which is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. All wheels must be on or off the ground. Observe instructions for towing the ve- hicle with all wheels on the ground.

If the vehicle is towed with the front axle raised (not permissible for vehicles with 4MATIC), the engine must be shut off (SmartKey in starter switch position 0 or 1). Otherwise the ESP® will immediately be engaged and will apply the rear wheel brakes. When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, the gear selector lever must be in position N and the SmartKey must be in starter switch position 2. When towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground or the front axle raised, the vehicle may be towed only for dis- tances up to 30 miles (50 km) and at a speed not to exceed 30 mph (50 km/h).

! To be certain to avoid a possibility of damage to the drivetrain, however, we recommend the drive shaft be discon- nected at the rear axle drive flange (ve- hicles with 4MATIC: disconnected at the front and rear axle drive flanges) for any towing beyond a short tow to a nearby garage.

Practical hints Towing the vehicle

Warning!

Warning!

If circumstances require towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, always tow with a tow bar if: 앫 the engine will not run 앫 there is a malfunction in the electrohy-

draulic brake system

앫 there is a malfunction in the power sup- ply or in the vehicle’s electrical system as that will be necessary to adequately con- trol the towed vehicle.

Prior to towing the vehicle with all wheels on the ground, make certain the SmartKey is in starter switch position 2.

If the SmartKey is left in the starter switch position 0 for an extended period of time, it can no longer be turned in the switch. In this case, the steering is locked. To unlock, re- move SmartKey from starter switch and re- insert.

The brake system requires electrical power to operate.

A malfunction in the vehicle’s power supply or electrical system may impair brake sys- tem operation and switch it into its emer- gency operation mode. To brake, the driver must then apply significantly greater brake pedal pressure and depress the pedal much further to obtain the expected braking ef- fect. If necessary, apply full pressure to the brake pedal. Brakes may only be applied to the front wheels. Stopping distance is in- creased! Adapt your driving style according- ly. For more information, refer to “Electrohydraulic brake system” (컄 page 96). With the engine not running, there is no power assistance for the steering system. In this case, it is important to keep in mind that a considerably higher degree of effort is nec- essary to steer the vehicle. Adapt your driv- ing accordingly.
