If the ÷ warning lamp and the å warn- ing lamp are lit continuously, ESP® is not available due to a malfunction. Observe the information on warning lamps (Y page 322) and display messages which may be shown in the instrument cluster (Y page 291). i Only use wheels with the recommended
tyre sizes. Only then will ESP® function properly.
Characteristics of ESP® General notes If the ÷ ESP warning lamp goes out before beginning the journey, ESP® is automatically active. If ESP® intervenes, the ÷ ESP® warning lamp flashes in the instrument cluster. If ESP® intervenes: X Do not deactivate ESP® under any circum-
stances.
X When pulling away, only depress the accel-
erator pedal as far as is necessary.

ECO start/stop function The ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically if the vehicle stops moving. When pulling away again, the engine starts automatically. ESP® remains in its pre- viously selected status. Example: if ESP® was deactivated before the engine was

Characteristics of activated SPORT han- dling mode If SPORT handling mode is activated and one or more wheels start to spin, the ÷ ESP® warning lamp in the instrument cluster flashes. ESP® only stabilises the vehicle to a limited degree. When SPORT handling mode is activated: RESP® only improves driving stability to a
limited degree.

RESP® still provides support when you
brake.
ESP® trailer stabilisation G WARNING If road and weather conditions are poor, trailer stabilisation will not be able to prevent the vehicle/trailer combination from swerv- ing. Trailers with a high centre of gravity can tip over before ESP® can detect this. There is a risk of an accident. Always adapt your driving style to the prevail- ing road and weather conditions.
If your vehicle/trailer combination begins to lurch, you can only stabilise the vehicle/ trailer combination by depressing the brake firmly. In this situation, ESP® assists you and can detect if the vehicle/trailer combination begins to lurch. ESP® slows the vehicle down by braking and limiting the engine output until the vehicle/trailer combination has stabi- lised. Trailer stabilisation is active above speeds of about 65 km/h. Trailer stabilisation does not work if ESP® is deactivated or disabled because of a mal- function.
EBD (electronic brake force distribu- tion) General notes EBD monitors and controls the brake pres- sure on the rear wheels to improve driving stability while braking.
Important safety notes i Observe the "Important safety notes" sec-
tion for driving safety systems (Y page 72). G WARNING If EBD has malfunctioned, the rear wheels can still lock, e.g. under full braking. This increa- ses the risk of skidding and an accident.

PRE-SAFE® Brake General notes i Observe the "Important safety notes" sec-
tion (Y page 72).
PRE-SAFE® Brake is only available for vehi- cles with the Driving Assistance package. For PRE-SAFE® Brake to assist you when driv- ing, the radar sensor system and the camera system must be switched on and be opera- tional. With the help of the radar sensor system and the camera system, PRE-SAFE® Brake can detect obstacles that are in front of your vehi- cle for an extended period of time. In addition, pedestrians in the path of your vehicle can be detected. PRE-SAFE® Brake detects pedestrians using typical characteristics such as the body con- tours and posture of a person standing upright. i Observe the restrictions described in the
"Important safety notes" section (Y page 81).
PRE-SAFE® Brake can help you to minimise the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead or a pedestrian, and reduce the effects of such
Important safety notes G WARNING PRE-SAFE® Brake will initially brake your vehi- cle by a partial application of the brakes if a danger of collision is detected. There may be a collision unless you brake yourself. Even after subsequent full application of the brakes a collision cannot always be avoided, partic- ularly when approaching at too high a speed. There is a risk of an accident. Always apply the brakes yourself and try to take evasive action, provided it is safe to do so. G WARNING PRE-SAFE® Brake cannot always clearly iden- tify objects and complex traffic conditions. In these cases, PRE-SAFE® Brake may: Rgive an unnecessary warning and then

Rneither give a warning nor intervene There is a risk of an accident. Always pay particular attention to the traffic situation and be ready to brake, especially if PRE-SAFE® Brake warns you. Terminate the intervention in a non-critical driving situation.
In order to maintain the appropriate distance to the vehicle in front and thus prevent a col- lision, you must apply the brakes yourself. G WARNING PRE-SAFE® Brake does not react: Rto small people, e.g. children Rto animals Rto oncoming vehicles Rto crossing traffic Rwhen cornering

As a result, PRE-SAFE® Brake may neither give warnings nor intervene in all critical sit- uations. There is a risk of an accident. Always pay careful attention to the traffic sit- uation and be ready to brake.

Following damage to the front end of the vehi- cle, have the radar sensor settings and oper- ation checked at a qualified specialist work- shop. This also applies to collisions at slow speeds where there is no visible damage to the front of the vehicle. Following damage to the windscreen, have the configuration and operation of the cam-
era system checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
Function X To activate/deactivate: activate or deac-
tivate PRE-SAFE® Brake in the on-board computer (Y page 278). If the PRE-SAFE® Brake is not activated, the æ symbol appears in the multifunction display.
This function will issue a warning if: Rat a speed of around 30 km/h or more the distance maintained to the vehicle travel- ling in front is insufficient for several sec- onds. The · distance warning lamp then lights up in the instrument cluster.
Rat a speed of approximately 7 km/h or
higher, you very quickly approach a vehicle in front or a pedestrian. An intermittent warning tone will then sound and the · distance warning lamp will light up in the instrument cluster.
X Brake immediately to defuse the situation. or X Take evasive action provided it is safe to do
so.
The PRE-SAFE® Brake function can also brake the vehicle automatically under the following conditions: Rthe driver and front-passenger have their
seat belts fastened and
Rthe vehicle speed is between approx-
imately 7 km/h and 200 km/h
At a speed of up to approximately 70 km/h, PRE-SAFE® Brake can also detect: Rstationary objects in the path of your vehi-
cle, e.g. stopped or parked vehicles
Rpedestrians in the path of your vehicle
i If there is an increased risk of collision,
preventive passenger protection measures (PRE-SAFE®) are activated.
If the risk of collision with the vehicle in front remains and you do not brake, take evasive action or accelerate significantly, the vehicle may perform automatic emergency braking, up to the point of full brake application. Auto- matic emergency braking is not performed until immediately prior to an imminent acci- dent. You can prevent the intervention of the PRE- SAFE® Brake at any time by: Rdepressing the accelerator pedal further Ractivating kickdown Rreleasing the brake pedal The braking action of PRE-SAFE® Brake is ended automatically if: Ryou manoeuvre to avoid the obstacle Rthere is no longer a risk of collision Rthere is no longer an obstacle detected in
front of your vehicle
STEER CONTROL General notes STEER CONTROL helps you by transmitting a noticeable steering force to the steering wheel in the direction required for vehicle stabilisation. This steering support is provided in particular if: Rboth right wheels or both left wheels are on
a slippery road surface when you brake heavily.

Anti-theft systems Immobiliser The immobiliser prevents your vehicle from being started without the correct key. X To activate with the key: remove the key
from the ignition lock.
X To activate with KEYLESS-GO: switch the
ignition off and open the driver's door. X To deactivate: switch on the ignition. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Anyone can start the engine if a valid key has been left inside the vehicle. i The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you start the engine.
ATA (Anti-Theft Alarm system)
X To prime: lock the vehicle with the key or
KEYLESS-GO. Indicator lamp : flashes. The alarm sys- tem is primed after approximately 15 seconds.
X To switch off: unlock the vehicle with the
key or KEYLESS-GO.
Tow-away protection Function An audible and visual alarm is triggered if your vehicle's angle of inclination is altered while tow-away protection is primed. This can occur if the vehicle is jacked up on one side, for example.
Priming X Make sure that:
Rthe doors are closed Rthe boot lid/tailgate is closed Only then is the tow-away protection primed.
X Lock the vehicle with the key or KEYLESS-
GO. Tow-away protection is primed after approximately 30 seconds.

Key Important safety notes United Kingdom only: G WARNING When the double locks are activated, the doors can no longer be opened from the inside. People in the vehicle can no longer get out, e.g. in hazardous situations. There is a risk of injury. Therefore, do not leave any people unsuper- vised in the vehicle, particularly children, eld- erly people or people in need of special assis- tance. Do not activate the double lock when people are in the vehicle.
If the vehicle has been locked from the out- side, the double lock function is activated as standard. It is then not possible to open the doors from inside the vehicle. You can deac- tivate the double-lock function by deactivat- ing the interior motion sensor (Y page 85). The doors can then be opened from the inside after the vehicle has been locked from the outside. The anti-theft alarm system is trig- gered if the door is opened from the inside. Switch off the alarm (Y page 83). All countries:
G WARNING If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle, they could: Ropen the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
Rget out and disrupt traffic. Roperate the vehicle's equipment. Additionally, children could set the vehicle in motion if, for example, they: Rrelease the parking brake. Rshift the automatic transmission out of

Rshift the manual transmission into neutral. Rstart the engine. There is a risk of an accident and injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. Always keep the key out of reach of children. G WARNING If persons (particularly children) are exposed to heat or cold for a prolonged period, there is a risk of serious or even fatal injuries. Never leave persons (particularly children) unatten- ded in the vehicle. G WARNING If you attach heavy or large objects to the key, the key could be unintentionally turned in the ignition lock. This could cause the engine to be switched off. There is a risk of an accident. Do not attach any heavy or large objects to the key. Remove any bulky keyrings before inserting the key into the ignition lock.
! Keep the key away from strong magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote control func- tion could be affected. Strong magnetic fields can occur in the vicinity of powerful electrical installations.

KEYLESS-GO General notes Bear in mind that the engine can be started by any of the vehicle occupants if there is a KEYLESS-GO key in the vehicle.
Locking and unlocking centrally You can start, lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-GO. To do this, you only need carry the key with you. You can combine the KEY- LESS-GO functions with the functions of a conventional key. Unlock the vehicle by using KEYLESS-GO, for instance, and lock it using the & button on the key. When locking or unlocking with KEYLESS-GO, the distance between the key and the corre- sponding door handle must not be greater than 1 m. A check which periodically establishes a radio connection between the vehicle and the key determines whether a valid key is in the vehi- cle. This occurs, for example: Rwhen the external door handles are

Do not keep the key: Rwith electronic devices, e.g. a mobile

X To lock centrally: press the & button. The key centrally locks/unlocks: Rthe doors Rthe boot lid/tailgate Rthe fuel filler flap When unlocking, the turn signals flash once. When locking, they flash three times. You can also set an audible signal to confirm that the vehicle has been locked. The audible signal can be activated and deactivated using the on-board computer (Y page 284).

Changing the settings of the locking system You can change the settings of the locking system. This means that only the driver's door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the vehicle is unlocked. This is useful if you fre- quently travel on your own. X To change the setting: simultaneously press the % and & buttons on the key for approximately six seconds until the battery check lamp flashes twice (Y page 91).
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the vehi- cle, pressing the & or % button: Rlocks or Runlocks the vehicle
The key now functions as follows: X To unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the % but-
ton twice.
X To lock centrally: press the & button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as fol- lows: X To unlock the driver's door: touch the inner surface of the door handle on the driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: touch the inner sur-
face of the door handle on the front- passenger door or the rear door.
X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles.
X To restore the factory settings: press
and hold down the % and & buttons simultaneously for approximately six sec- onds until the battery check lamp flashes twice (Y page 91).
Emergency key element General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or unlocked with the key, use the emergency key element. If you use the emergency key element to unlock and open the driver's door or the boot lid/tailgate, the anti-theft alarm system will be triggered (Y page 83). There are several ways to turn off the alarm: X To turn the alarm off with the key: press
the % or & button on the key.
or X Insert the key into the ignition lock. or X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS- GO: press the Start/Stop button in the igni- tion lock. The key must be in the vehicle.
or X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS- GO. The key must be outside the vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency key element, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked automatically. X To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
key into the ignition lock.
Removing the emergency key element

Battery of the key Important safety notes G WARNING Batteries contain toxic and corrosive substan- ces. If batteries are swallowed, it can result in severe health problems. There is a risk of fatal injury. Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Batteries contain pollutants. It is illegal to dispose of them with the household rubbish. They must be collected sep- arately and disposed of in an environmentally responsible recycling system. Dispose of batteries in an environmentally responsible manner. Take discharged batteries to a qualified spe- cialist workshop or to a col- lection point for used batter- ies.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist workshop.
Checking the battery
X Press the & or % button.
The battery is working properly if battery check lamp : lights up briefly. The battery is discharged if battery check lamp : does not light up briefly. X Change the battery (Y page 92). i If the key battery is checked within the

range of KEYLESS-GO, the following situa- tions, for example, could lead to the unin- tentional opening of the boot/tailgate: Rusing a car wash Rusing a high-pressure cleaner Make sure that the key is at least 2 m away from the vehicle.
General notes With KEYLESS-GO and HANDS-FREE ACCESS, you can open or close the boot lid/ tailgate or stop the procedure without using your hands. This is useful if you have your
hands full. To do this, simply make a kicking movement under the bumper with your leg. Observe the following points: RCarry your KEYLESS-GO key about your person. The KEYLESS-GO key must be in the rear detection range of the vehicle.
RWhen making the kicking movement, make
sure that you are standing firmly on the ground and that there is sufficient clear- ance to the rear of the vehicle. You could otherwise lose your balance, e.g. on ice.
(Example: Saloon) RAlways ensure that you only make a kicking
movement within the detection range of sensors :.
RStand at least 30 cm away from the rear
area while doing so.
RDo not come into contact with the bumper while making the kicking movement. Oth- erwise, the sensors may not function cor- rectly.
RHANDS-FREE ACCESS does not function
when the engine is started.
RIf a KEYLESS-GO key is within the rear
detection range of KEYLESS-GO, HANDS- FREE ACCESS could be triggered. For this reason, the boot lid/ tailgate could open or close unintentionally, e.g. if you: - set something down or lift something
behind the vehicle

Operation

X If the boot lid/tailgate does not open after several attempts: wait at least ten seconds, then move your foot under the bumper again.
i If you hold your foot under the bumper for
too long, the boot lid/ tailgate does not open or close. Repeat the leg movement more quickly if this occurs.

Priming You can limit the opening angle of the tail- gate. This is possible in the top half of its opening range, up to approximately 20 cm before the stop. X To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedure at the desired position: press the closing button (Y page 99) in the tailgate or pull the handle on the outside of the tailgate again.
X To store the position: press and hold the closing button in the tailgate until you hear a short tone. The opening angle limiter is activated. The tailgate then stops in the stored position when opened.
