i The integrated filter filters out most par- ticles of dust and soot and completely fil- ters out pollen. It also reduces gaseous pol- lutants and odours. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior. For this reason, you should always observe the interval for replacing the filter, which is specified in the Service Booklet. As it depends on environmental conditions, e.g. heavy air pollution, the interval may be shorter than stated in the Service Booklet. i It is possible that the residual heat func- tion may be activated automatically an hour after the key has been removed. The vehi- cle is then ventilated for 30 minutes to dry the automatic climate control.

Useful information

i This Owner's Manual describes all mod- els, series and optional equipment for your vehicle that were available at the time of going to press. National variations are pos- sible. Note that your vehicle may not be equipped with all of the functions descri- bed. This is also the case for systems and functions relevant to safety.

i Read the information on qualified special-

ist workshops: (Y page 26).

Overview of climate control systems Important safety notes Observe the settings recommended on the following pages. The windows could other- wise mist up. To prevent the windows from misting up: Rswitch off climate control only briefly Rswitch on air-recirculation mode only

briefly

Rswitch on the cooling with air dehumidifi-

cation function

briefly, if required

Climate control regulates the temperature and the humidity in the vehicle interior and filters undesirable substances out of the air. Climate control is only operational when the engine is running. Optimum operation is only achieved when the side windows and the roof are closed. The residual heat function can only be acti- vated or deactivated with the ignition switched off (Y page 167). i Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period

during warm weather, e.g. using the con- venience opening feature (Y page 105). This will speed up the cooling process and the desired vehicle interior temperature will be reached more quickly.

Auxiliary heating Important safety notes G DANGER If the exhaust pipe is blocked or sufficient ventilation is not possible, toxic exhaust fumes can enter the vehicle, especially car- bon monoxide. This is the case, e.g. in enclosed spaces, or if the vehicle is stuck in snow. There is a risk of fatal injuries. You should switch off the auxiliary heating in enclosed spaces which do not have an extrac- tion system, e.g. a garage. If the vehicle is stuck in snow and you must leave the auxiliary heating running, keep the exhaust pipe and the area around the vehicle clear of snow. To guarantee a sufficient supply of fresh air, open a window on the side of the vehicle away from the wind. G WARNING When the auxiliary heating is switched on, parts of the vehicle can become very hot. Flammable material such as leaves, grass or twigs may ignite if they come into contact with hot parts of the exhaust system for extended periods. There is a risk of fire. When the auxiliary heating is switched on, make sure that no flammable material can come into contact with hot vehicle compo- nents.

! Operating the auxiliary heating/ventila- tion draws on the vehicle battery. After you have heated or ventilated the vehicle a maximum of two times, drive for a longer distance.

i Switch the auxiliary heating on regularly

once a month for about ten minutes.

The auxiliary heating heats the air in the vehi- cle interior to the set temperature. This occurs without using the heat of the running engine. The auxiliary heating is operated directly using the vehicle's fuel. For this rea- son, the tank content must be at least at reserve fuel level to ensure that the auxiliary heating functions. The auxiliary heating/ventilation automati- cally adjusts to changes in temperature and weather conditions. For this reason, the aux- iliary heating could switch from ventilation mode to heating mode or from heating mode to ventilation mode. The auxiliary heating switches off automati- cally after 50 minutes. This time limit can be altered. To do this, visit a qualified specialist workshop. You cannot use the auxiliary ventilation to cool the vehicle interior to a temperature lower than the outside temperature.

Before switching on X Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition

lock (Y page 177).

X Set the desired temperature. Auxiliary heating or ventilation can also be switched on if the manually set climate con- trol is activated. Optimum comfort can be attained when the system is set to automatic mode. Set the temperature to 22 †. The auxiliary heating/ventilation can be acti- vated or deactivated using the remote control or the button on the centre console. The on-board computer can be used to spec- ify up to three departure times, one of which may be preselected (Y page 284).

Running-in notes Important safety notes New brake pads/linings and discs that have been replaced only achieve optimum braking effect after several hundred kilometres of driving. Compensate for the reduced braking effect by applying greater force to the brake pedal.

The first 1500 km If you treat the engine with sufficient care from the very start, you will be rewarded with excellent performance for the remainder of the engine's life. RDrive at varying vehicle speeds and engine

speeds for the first 1500 km.

RAvoid overstraining the vehicle during this

period, e.g. driving at full throttle.

RChange gear in good time, before the rev counter needle is Ô of the way to the red area of the rev counter.

RDo not shift down a gear manually in order

to brake.

RVehicles with automatic transmission:

try to avoid depressing the accelerator pedal beyond the point of resistance (kick- down).

After 1500 km, you may gradually accelerate the vehicle to full road and engine speeds.

Additional running-in notes for AMG vehicles: RDo not drive at speeds above 140 km/h for

the first 1500 km.

ROnly allow the engine to reach a maximum

engine speed of 4500 rpm briefly.

i You should also observe these notes on running-in if the engine or parts of the drive train on your vehicle have been replaced.

AMG vehicles with self-locking rear axle differential Your vehicle is equipped with a self-locking differential on the rear axle. Change the oil after a running-in period of 3000 km to improve protection of the rear axle differen- tial. This oil change prolongs the service life of the differential. Have the oil change carried out at a qualified specialist workshop.

Driving Important safety notes G WARNING Objects in the driver's footwell may restrict the clearance around the pedals or block a depressed pedal. This jeopardises the oper- ating and road safety of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident. Stow all objects securely in the vehicle so that they do not get into the driver's footwell. Always fit the floormats securely and as pre- scribed in order to ensure that there is always sufficient room for the pedals. Do not use loose floormats and do not place several floor- mats on top of one another. G WARNING Unsuitable footwear can hinder correct usage of the pedals, e.g.: Rshoes with thick soles Rshoes with high heels Rslippers

There is a risk of an accident. Wear suitable footwear to ensure correct usage of the pedals. G WARNING If you switch off the ignition while driving, safety-relevant functions are only available with limitations, or not at all. This could affect, for example, the power steering and the brake boosting effect. You will require considerably more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk of an accident. Do not switch off the ignition while driving. G WARNING If the parking brake has not been fully released when driving, the parking brake can: Roverheat and cause a fire Rlose its hold function. There is a risk of fire and an accident. Release the parking brake fully before driving off.

! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use the engine's full performance until it has reached operating temperature. Only set the automatic transmission to the respective drive positions when the vehicle is stationary. Where possible, avoid spinning the drive wheels when pulling away on slippery roads. Otherwise, you could damage the drive train.

! AMG vehicles: at low engine oil temper-

atures (below +20 †), the maximum engine speed is restricted in order to pro- tect the engine. To protect the engine and maintain smooth engine operation, avoid driving at full throttle when the engine is cold.

HYBRID vehicles: make sure that you read the "HYBRID" supplement included in the vehicle literature. Otherwise, you may not recognise dangers.

with: - electronic devices, e.g. a mobile phone

or another key

- metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal film. RDo not keep the KEYLESS-GO key together with metallic objects, such as a metal case, for example. This can affect the functionality of KEY- LESS-GO.

Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with keys featuring an integrated KEYLESS-GO function and a detachable Start/Stop button. The Start/Stop button must be inserted in the ignition lock and the key must be in the vehi- cle.

178 Driving

Removing the Start/Stop button

Pressing the Start/Stop button several times in succession corresponds to the different key positions in the ignition lock. This is only the case if you are not depressing the brake pedal. If you depress the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button, the engine starts immedi- ately. Key positions with KEYLESS-GO

Switching on the power supply X Position 0: if Start/Stop button : has not yet been pressed, this corresponds to the key being removed from the ignition.

X Position 1: press Start/Stop button :.

The power supply is switched on. You can now activate the windscreen wipers, for example.

ton : twice. The ignition is switched on.

i The ignition is switched off if:

Rthe driver's door is opened and Ryou press Start/Stop button : once

when in this position.

X Remove Start/Stop button : from ignition

lock ;.

i When you insert Start/Stop button : into ignition lock ;, the system needs approximately two seconds' recognition time. You can then use Start/Stop but- ton :.

You can remove the Start/Stop button from the ignition lock and start the vehicle as nor- mal using the key. i You do not have to remove the Start/Stop

button from the ignition lock when you leave the vehicle.

Starting the engine Important safety notes G WARNING If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle, they could: Ropen the doors, thus endangering other

people or road users.

Rget out and disrupt traffic. Roperate the vehicle's equipment. Additionally, children could set the vehicle in motion if, for example, they: Rrelease the parking brake. Rshift the automatic transmission out of

parking position P.

Rshift the manual transmission into neutral. Rstart the engine. There is a risk of an accident and injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children or animals unattended in the vehicle. Always keep the key out of reach of children. G WARNING Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There is a risk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave the engine running in enclosed spaces with- out sufficient ventilation. G WARNING Flammable materials introduced through environmental influence or by animals can ignite if in contact with the exhaust system or parts of the engine that heat up. There is a risk of fire. Carry out regular checks to make sure that there are no flammable foreign materials in the engine compartment or in the exhaust system.
