automatic engine switch-off can take place a maximum of four times consecutively (ini- tial stop, then three subsequent stops). The ¤ symbol is shown in yellow in the mul- tifunction display after the engine has been started automatically for the fourth time. When the ¤ symbol is shown in green in the multifunction display, automatic engine switch-off is again possible.
i AMG vehicles: the number of consecu- tive automatic engine stops is unlimited.
Vehicles with manual transmission
The ECO start/stop function switches off the engine automatically at low speeds. X Brake the vehicle. X Engage neutral N (follow gearshift instruc- tion : to engage neutral N, if necessary).
X Release the clutch pedal.
The engine is switched off automatically.
Vehicles with automatic transmission If the vehicle is braked to a standstill in D or N, the ECO start/stop function switches off the engine automatically. i The HOLD function can be activated if the
engine has been switched off automati- cally. It is then not necessary to continue applying the brakes during the automatic stop phase. When you depress the accel- erator pedal, the engine starts automati-
cally and the braking effect of the HOLD function is deactivated.

Problems with the engine Problem The engine does not start.
The engine does not start. The starter motor can be heard.
The engine does not start. The starter motor can be heard. The reserve fuel warning lamp is lit and the fuel gauge display shows 0. The engine does not start. You cannot hear the starter motor.
Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The HOLD function or DISTRONIC PLUS is activated. X Deactivate the HOLD function (Y page 221) or DISTRONIC
PLUS (Y page 218).
X Try to start the engine again. RThere is a malfunction in the engine electronics. RThere is a malfunction in the fuel supply. X Before attempting to start the engine again, turn the key in the
ignition back to position 0 or press the Start/Stop button repeatedly until all indicator lamps in the instrument cluster go out.
X Try to start the engine again (Y page 178). Avoid excessively
long and frequent attempts to start the engine, as this will drain the battery.
If the engine does not start after several attempts: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The fuel tank is empty. X Refuel the vehicle.
The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or discharged. X Jump-start the vehicle (Y page 393). If the engine does not start despite attempts to jump-start it: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The starter motor was exposed to a thermal load that was too high. X Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two
minutes.
X Try to start the engine again. If the engine still does not start: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

Problem Vehicles with a petrol engine: The engine is not run- ning smoothly and is misfiring.
Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions There is a malfunction in the engine electronics or in a mechanical component of the engine management system. X Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic con- verter and damage it.
The coolant tempera- ture display is showing more than 120 †. The coolant warning lamp may also be lit and a warning tone may sound.
X Have the cause rectified immediately at a qualified specialist
workshop.
The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently. X Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant
to cool down.
X Check the coolant level (Y page 368). Observe the warning
notes as you do so and top up the coolant if necessary.
If the coolant level is correct, the engine radiator fan may be faulty. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently. X If the coolant temperature is below 120 †, you can continue
driving to the nearest qualified specialist workshop.
X Avoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in
mountainous terrain and stop-start traffic.
Manual transmission Gear lever ! Only engage gear when the clutch pedal
is depressed.
! When shifting between 5th and 6th gear, you should always push the gear lever all the way to the right. Otherwise, you could shift unintentionally into 3rd or 4th gear and damage the transmission. If you shift down at too high a speed (trans- mission braking), this can cause the engine to overrev, leading to engine damage. Do not use the clutch bite point to keep the vehicle stationary on uphill gradients. There is otherwise a risk of damaging the clutch.
! On long and steep downhill gradients,
especially if the vehicle is laden or towing
a trailer, you must shift into gear 1, 2 or 3
in good time. This uses the engine's braking effect. This relieves the load on the brake system and prevents the brakes from over- heating and wearing too quickly.Gear lever Reverse gear 1 to 6 Forward gears

Shifting to neutral (N)
X Depress the clutch pedal fully. X Move the gear lever to position N:.
Engaging reverse gear ! Only shift into reverse gear R when the vehicle is stationary. Otherwise, you could damage the transmission.
X Move the gear lever firmly to the left
beyond the point of resistance and then forwards.
i The ECO start/stop function is not avail-
able when reverse gear is engaged. For further information on the ECO start/ stop function; see (Y page 181).
Gearshift recommendation
Automatic transmission Important safety notes G WARNING If the engine speed is above the idling speed and you engage transmission position D or R, the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There is a risk of an accident. When engaging transmission position D or R, always firmly depress the brake pedal and do not simultaneously accelerate. G WARNING The automatic transmission switches to neu- tral position N when you switch off the engine. The vehicle may roll away. There is a risk of an accident. After switching off the engine, always switch to parking position P. Prevent the parked vehi- cle from rolling away by applying the parking brake.
HYBRID vehicles: ensure that you read the "HYBRID" supplement included in the vehicle literature. Otherwise, you may not recognise dangers.

Transmission positions B Park position
This prevents the vehicle from roll- ing away when stopped. Do not shift the transmission into position P(Y page 199) unless the vehicle is stationary. The automatic transmission shifts to P automatically if you: Rremove the key Rswitch off the engine when in R or D and open one of the front doors
C Reverse gear
Only shift the transmission to R when the vehicle is stationary.
A Neutral
Do not shift the transmission to N while driving. Otherwise, the auto- matic transmission could be dam- aged. Releasing the brakes will allow you to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to push it or tow it. If ESP® is deactivated or faulty: only shift the transmission to posi- tion N if the vehicle is in danger of skidding, e.g. on icy roads. If you switch off the engine using the key or the Start/Stop button, the automatic transmission shifts to neutral N automatically. ! Rolling in neutral N can lead to
damage to the transmission.
7 Drive
The automatic transmission changes gear automatically. All forward gears are available.

AMG vehicles When shifting down, the double-clutch func- tion is active regardless of the currently selec- ted drive program. The double-clutch function reduces load change reactions and is condu- cive to a sporty driving style. The sound gen- erated by the double-clutch function depends on the drive program selected.
Kickdown Use kickdown for maximum acceleration. X Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point. The transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on the engine speed.
X Ease off the accelerator pedal once the
desired speed is reached. The automatic transmission shifts back up.
Towing a trailer X Drive in the middle of the engine speed
range on uphill gradients.
X Shift down to gear 3 or 2(Y page 191)

Automatic drive program Automatic drive programs E and S Drive program E (drive program C on AMG vehicles) is characterised by the following: Rcomfort-oriented engine settings. Roptimal fuel consumption resulting from the automatic transmission shifting up sooner.
Rthe vehicle pulling away more gently in
forward and reverse gears unless the accel- erator pedal is depressed fully.
Rincreased sensitivity. This improves driving
stability on slippery road surfaces, for example.
Rthe automatic transmission shifting up sooner. This results in the vehicle being driven at lower engine speeds and the wheels being less likely to spin.
Drive program S (or, in the case of AMG vehi- cles, drive programs S and S+) is character- ised by the following: Rsporty engine and automatic transmission
settings.
Rthe vehicle pulling away in first gear. Rthe automatic transmission shifting up
later.
Ras a result of the later automatic transmis- sion shift points, the fuel consumption pos- sibly being higher.
Manual drive program M General notes In this drive program, you can briefly change gear yourself by using the steering wheel gearshift paddles. The transmission must be in position D. You can activate manual drive program M in the E and S automatic drive programs. i As well as temporary drive program M,
you can also activate permanent drive pro- gram M(Y page 190).

Activating X Shift the transmission to position D. X Pull the left or right steering wheel gearshift
paddle (Y page 191). Manual drive program M is temporarily acti- vated. The selected gear and M appear in the multifunction display.
Shifting gears If you pull on the left or right steering wheel gearshift paddle, the automatic transmission switches to manual drive program M for a limited amount of time. Depending on which gearshift paddle is pulled, the automatic transmission immediately shifts into the next gear down or up, if permitted. X To shift up: pull the right-hand steering
wheel gearshift paddle (Y page 191). The automatic transmission shifts up to the next gear.
i If the maximum engine speed on the cur-
rently engaged gear is reached and you continue to accelerate, the automatic transmission automatically shifts up in order to prevent engine damage.
X To shift down: pull on the left-hand steer-
ing wheel gearshift paddle (Y page 191). The automatic transmission shifts down to the next gear.
i If the engine exceeds the maximum
engine speed when shifting down, the auto- matic transmission protects against engine damage by not shifting down.
i Automatic downshifting occurs when
coasting.
Gearshift recommendation
The gearshift recommendations assist you in adopting an economical driving style. The rec- ommended gear is shown in the multifunction display. X Shift to recommended gear ; according
to gearshift recommendation : when shown in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
Deactivating If you have activated manual drive program M, it will remain active for a certain amount of time. Under certain conditions the mini- mum amount of time is extended, e.g. in the case of lateral acceleration, during an overrun phase or when driving on steep terrain. If manual drive program M has been deacti- vated, the automatic transmission shifts into the automatic drive program that was last selected, i.e. E or S. You can also deactivate manual drive pro- gram M yourself: X Pull on the right-hand steering wheel gear-
shift paddle and hold it in place (Y page 191).
or X Use the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch the
transmission position.
or X Use the program selector button to change
the drive program (Y page 190). Manual drive program M is deactivated. The automatic transmission switches into the automatic drive program that was last selected, i.e. E or S.
Manual drive program (AMG vehicles and vehicles with the AMG Sports package) General notes In this drive program, you can permanently change gear yourself by using the steering wheel gearshift paddles. Activating the manual drive program X Press the (Y page 190) program selector button repeatedly until M appears in the multifunction display.
X AMG vehicles: turn the drive program
selector (Y page 190) until M appears in the multifunction display. The indicator M on the drive program selec- tor lights up in red.
Manual drive program M can be selected using the program selector button or the drive program selector. In manual drive program M, you can change gear using the steering wheel gearshift paddles if the transmission is in position D.
Upshifting (all vehicles except AMG vehicles) X Pull the right-hand steering wheel gearshift
paddle. The automatic transmission shifts up to the next gear.
Upshifting (AMG vehicles) ! In manual gearshift program M, the auto- matic transmission does not shift up auto- matically even when the engine limiting speed for the current gear is reached. When the engine limiting speed is reached, the fuel supply is cut to prevent the engine from overrevving. You must make sure that

the engine speed does not reach the red area of the rev counter. Otherwise, there is a risk of engine damage.
: Gear indicator ; Upshift indicator X If the colour in the speedometer multifunc- tion display changes to red and the UP dis- play message is shown, shift up a gear.
Gearshift recommendation
The gearshift recommendations assist you in adopting an economical driving style. The rec- ommended gear is shown in the multifunction display. X If relevant gearshift recommendation :
appears in the multifunction display on the instrument cluster, pull on the right-hand steering wheel gearshift paddle (Y page 191). The automatic transmission shifts to rec- ommended gear ;.
Downshifting X Pull the left-hand steering wheel gearshift
paddle. The automatic transmission shifts down to the next gear.
i For maximum acceleration, pull the left- hand steering wheel gearshift paddle until

the transmission selects the optimum gear for the current speed.
Kickdown You can also use kickdown for maximum acceleration in manual drive program M. X Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point. The transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on the engine speed.
i AMG vehicles: it is not possible to use
kickdown in manual drive program M.
Deactivating the manual drive program X Press the program selector button (Y page 190) repeatedly until E or S appears in the multifunction display.
X AMG vehicles: turn the drive program selector (Y page 190) until C, S or S+ appears in the multifunction display.

Problems with the transmission Problem The transmission has problems shifting gear.
Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The transmission is losing oil. X Have the transmission checked at a qualified specialist work-
shop immediately.
The acceleration ability is deteriorating. The transmission no longer changes gear.
The transmission is in emergency mode. It is only possible to shift into second gear and reverse gear. X Stop. X Shift the transmission to position P. X Switch off the engine. X Wait at least ten seconds before restarting the engine. X Shift the transmission to position D or R.
If D is selected, the transmission shifts into second gear; if R is selected, the transmission shifts into reverse gear.
X Have the transmission checked at a qualified specialist work-
shop immediately.
Refuelling Important safety notes G WARNING Fuel is highly flammable. If you handle fuel incorrectly, there is a risk of fire and explo- sion. You must avoid fire, naked flames, creating sparks and smoking. Switch off the engine and, if applicable, the auxiliary heating before refuelling. G WARNING Fuels are poisonous and hazardous to health. There is a danger of injury. Do not swallow fuel or let it come into contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do not inhale fuel vapours. Keep fuels out of the reach of chil- dren.
If you or others come into contact with fuel, observe the following: RWash the fuel off any affected areas of skin
with water and soap immediately.
RIf you get fuel in your eyes, rinse them thor- oughly with clean water immediately. Seek immediate medical attention.
RIf fuel is swallowed, seek immediate medi-
cal attention. Do not induce vomiting.
RChange any clothing that has come into
contact with fuel immediately. G WARNING Electrostatic charge can cause sparks and thereby ignite fuel vapours. There is a risk of fire and explosion. Always touch the vehicle body before opening the fuel filler flap or touching the fuel pump nozzle. This discharges any electrostatic charge that may have built up. G WARNING Vehicles with a diesel engine:

If you mix diesel fuel with petrol, the flash point of this fuel mixture is lower than that of pure diesel fuel. When the engine is running, components in the exhaust system may over- heat unnoticed. There is a risk of fire. Never refuel with petrol. Never add petrol to diesel fuel.
! Do not use petrol to refuel vehicles with a diesel engine. Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with a petrol engine. Do not switch on the ignition if you accidentally refuel with the wrong fuel. Otherwise, the fuel will enter the fuel system. Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could result in damage to the fuel system and the engine. The repair costs are high. Notify a qualified specialist workshop and have the fuel tank and fuel lines drained completely.
! Overfilling the fuel tank could damage the
fuel system.
! Take care not to spill any fuel on painted surfaces. You could otherwise damage the paintwork.
! Use a filter when adding fuel from a fuel can. The fuel lines and/or the diesel injec- tion system could otherwise be blocked by particles from the fuel can.
Do not get into the vehicle again during the refuelling process. Otherwise, electrostatic charge could build up again. If you overfill the fuel tank, some fuel may spray out when you remove the fuel pump nozzle. For further information on fuel and fuel quality (Y page 469).
Refuelling Opening/closing the fuel filler flap Pay attention to the important safety notes (Y page 195).

ECO display
Example: ECO display The ECO display provides feedback on how economical your driving characteristics are. The ECO display assists you in achieving the most economical driving style for the selec- ted settings and prevailing conditions. Con- sumption can be significantly influenced by your driving style. The ECO display consists of three bars: RAcceleration RConstant RCoasting The percentage count is the mean value of the three bar values. The three bars and the mean value begin at the value of 50%. A higher per- centage count indicates a more economical driving style. The ECO display does not indicate the actual fuel consumption and a fixed percentage count in the ECO display does not indicate a fixed consumption figure. In addition to driving style, the consumption is affected by many other factors, such as: Rload Rtyre pressure Rcold start Rchoice of route Rthe use of electrical consumers These factors are not included in the ECO dis- play. The evaluation of your driving style takes the following three categories into consideration:

especially at higher speeds
- The bar empties: sporty acceleration RConstant (assessment of driving behav- iour at all times): - The bar fills up: constant speed and

- The bar empties: fluctuations in speed RCoasting (assessment of all deceleration processes): - The bar fills up: anticipatory driving,
keeping your distance and early release of the accelerator. The vehicle can coast without use of the brakes.

i An economical driving style involves driv-
ing at a moderate engine speed. To achieve a higher value in the categories Acceleration and Constant: Robserve the gearshift recommendation. Rdrive the vehicle in drive program E (vehi-
cles with automatic transmission). i On long journeys at a constant speed, e.g. on the motorway, only the bar for Con‐ stant will change. i The ECO display summarises the driving characteristics from the start of the journey to its completion. Therefore, there are dynamic changes in the bars at the start of a journey. During a prolonged driving time, these changes are smaller. For more dynamic changes, perform a manual reset. For further information on the ECO display, see (Y page 272).
Braking Important safety notes G WARNING If you shift down on a slippery road surface in an attempt to increase the engine's braking effect, the drive wheels could lose their grip. This increases the risk of skidding and having an accident. Do not shift down for additional engine brak- ing on a slippery road surface.
Downhill gradients Do not depress the brake pedal continuously while the vehicle is in motion, e.g. never cause the brakes to rub by constantly apply- ing light pressure to the pedal. This results in excessive and premature wear to the brake pads. Change into a lower gear in good time on long and steep downhill gradients. Take particular note of this when driving a laden vehicle and when towing a trailer. i This also applies if you have activated
cruise control, SPEEDTRONIC or DIS- TRONIC PLUS.
This will use the braking effect of the engine, so less braking will be required to maintain vehicle speed. This relieves the load on the brake system and prevents the brakes from overheating and wearing too quickly.
Heavy and light loads G WARNING The braking system can overheat if you leave your foot on the brake pedal while driving. This increases the braking distance and could even cause the braking system to fail. There is a risk of an accident. Never use the brake pedal as a footrest. Do not simultaneously depress both the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal while driving.

! Depressing the brake pedal constantly
results in excessive and premature wear to the brake pads.
If the brakes have been subjected to a heavy load, do not stop the vehicle immediately, but drive on for a short while. This allows the air- flow to cool the brakes more quickly. If the brakes have been used only moderately, you should occasionally test their effective- ness. To do this, brake more firmly from a higher speed. This improves the grip of the brakes.
Wet road surfaces If you have driven for a long time in heavy rain without braking, there may be a delayed reac- tion from the brakes when braking for the first time. This may also occur after the vehicle has been washed or driven through deep water. You have to depress the brake pedal more firmly. Maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front. After driving on a wet road or having the vehi- cle washed, brake firmly while paying atten- tion to the traffic conditions. This will warm up the brake discs, thereby drying them more quickly and protecting them against corro- sion.
Limited braking performance on salt- treated roads If you drive on salted roads, a layer of salt residue may form on the brake discs and brake pads. This can result in a significantly longer braking distance. RBrake occasionally to remove any possible
salt residue. Make sure that you do not endanger other road users when doing so. RCarefully depress the brake pedal and the
beginning and end of a journey.
RMaintain a greater distance to the vehicle
ahead.
New brake pads/linings New and replaced brake pads and discs only reach their optimum braking effect after sev- eral hundred kilometres of driving. Compen- sate for this by applying greater force to the brake pedal. For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom- mends that you only have brake pads/linings fitted to your vehicle which have been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which correspond to an equivalent quality standard. Brake pads/linings which have not been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which are not of an equivalent quality could affect your vehicle's operating safety.
AMG high-performance and ceramic brakes AMG brake systems are designed for heavy loads. This may lead to noise when braking. This is dependent on: Rspeed Rbraking force Renvironmental conditions, such as temper-
ature and humidity
The wear of individual components of the brake system, such as the brake pads/linings or brake discs, depends on the individual driv- ing style and operating conditions. For this reason, it is impossible to state a mileage (service life) that will be valid under all circumstances. An aggressive driving style will lead to high wear. You can obtain further information about this from your Mercedes- Benz Service Centre. New brake pads/brake pads and discs that have been replaced only achieve optimum braking effect after several hundred kilome- tres of driving. Compensate for the reduced braking effect by applying greater force to the brake pedal. Always be aware of this and adapt your driving and braking accordingly during the running-in period. Excessive heavy braking results in corre- spondingly high brake wear. Observe the

This increases the risk of skidding and having an accident. Do not shift down for additional engine brak- ing on a slippery road surface. G DANGER If the exhaust pipe is blocked or adequate ventilation is not possible, poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the vehicle. This is the case, e.g. if the vehicle becomes trapped in snow. There is a risk of fatal injury. If you leave the engine or the auxiliary heating running, make sure the exhaust pipe and area around the vehicle are clear of snow. To ensure an adequate supply of fresh air, open a window on the side of the vehicle that is not facing into the wind.
Have your vehicle winterproofed at a qualified specialist workshop at the onset of winter. Observe the notes in the "Winter operation" section (Y page 406).

Slippery road surfaces G WARNING If you shift down on a slippery road surface in an attempt to increase the engine's braking effect, the drive wheels could lose their grip. Driving on wet roads Aquaplaning If water has accumulated to a certain depth on the road surface, there is a danger of aqua- planing occurring, even if: Ryou are driving at low speeds. Rthe tyres have adequate tread depth. For this reason, do not drive in tyre ruts and brake carefully.
Driving on flooded roads ! Bear in mind that vehicles travelling in front or in the opposite direction create waves. This may cause the maximum per- missible water depth to be exceeded. These notes must be observed under all circumstances. You could otherwise dam- age the engine, the electronics or the trans- mission.
If you have to drive on stretches of road on which water has collected, please bear in mind that: Rthe maximum permissible still water depth
is 25 cm.
Ryou should drive no faster than at walking
pace.
Winter driving Important safety notes G WARNING If you shift down on a slippery road surface in an attempt to increase the engine's braking effect, the drive wheels could lose their grip.
If the vehicle threatens to skid or cannot be stopped when moving at low speed: X Vehicles with manual transmission:
shift to neutral.

X Try to bring the vehicle under control by
using corrective steering.
You should drive particularly carefully on slip- pery road surfaces. Avoid sudden accelera- tion, steering and braking manoeuvres. i For more information on driving with
snow chains; see (Y page 407).
The outside temperature indicator is not designed to serve as an ice-warning device and is therefore unsuitable for that purpose. Changes in the outside temperature are dis- played after a short delay. Indicated temperatures just above the freez- ing point do not guarantee that the road sur- face is free of ice. The road may still be icy, especially in wooded areas or on bridges. The vehicle could skid if you fail to adapt your driving style. Always adapt your driving style and drive at a speed to suit the prevailing weather conditions. You should pay special attention to road con- ditions when temperatures are around the freezing point.
Driving systems Cruise control General notes Cruise control maintains a constant road speed for you. It brakes automatically in order to avoid exceeding the set speed. You must select a low gear in good time on long and steep downhill gradients, especially if the vehicle is laden or towing a trailer. By doing so, you will make use of the braking effect of the engine. This relieves the load on the brake system and prevents the brakes from over- heating and wearing too quickly.

Use cruise control only if road and traffic con- ditions make it appropriate to maintain a steady speed for a prolonged period. You can store any road speed above 30 km/h.
