The steering wheel heating has switched itself off prematurely or cannot be switched on.

Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The on-board voltage is too low because too many electrical con- sumers are switched on. X Switch off electrical consumers that you do not need, such as

the rear window heating or interior lighting. Once the battery is sufficiently charged, the steering wheel heating will switch back on automatically.

EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature Important safety notes G WARNING When the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature adjusts the steering wheel, you and other vehicle occupants – particularly children – could become trapped. There is a risk of injury. While the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature is mak- ing adjustments, make sure that no one has any body parts in the sweep of the steering wheel. If someone is trapped: Rpress one of the memory function position

buttons, or

Rmove the switch for steering wheel adjust-

ment in the opposite direction to that in which the steering wheel is moving.

The adjustment process is stopped. G WARNING If children activate the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT fea- ture, they can become trapped, particularly when unattended. There is a risk of injury. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle. G WARNING If you drive off while the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature is making adjustments, you could lose control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an accident.

Always wait until the adjustment process is complete before driving off.

The EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature makes getting in and out of your vehicle easier. You can activate and deactivate the EASY- ENTRY/EXIT feature in the on-board com- puter (Y page 285).

Position of the steering wheel when the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature is active The steering wheel tilts upwards if you: Rremove the key from the ignition lock Rwith KEYLESS-GO: open the driver's door; KEYLESS-GO must be in position 1 in the ignition lock

Rwith the key: open the driver's door; the key must be in position 0 or 1 in the ignition lock (Y page 177)

i The steering wheel only moves upwards if

it has not already reached the upper end stop.

Position of the steering wheel for driv- ing The steering wheel is moved to the previously set position if: Rthe driver's door is closed and Rwith KEYLESS-GO: you press the Start/ Stop button once on vehicles with KEY- LESS-GO

Rwith the key: you insert the key into the

or

ignition lock.

If you close the driver's door with the key inserted in the ignition lock, the steering wheel is automatically moved to the previ- ously set position. The last position of the steering wheel is stored when you switch off the ignition or when you store the setting with the memory function (Y page 132).

Crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature If the crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is triggered in an accident, the steering column will move upwards when the driver's door is opened. This occurs irrespective of the posi- tion of the key in the ignition lock. This makes it easier to exit the vehicle and rescue the occupants. The crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is only operational if the EASY-EXIT/ENTRY fea- ture is activated in the on-board computer. (Y page 285)

Useful information

i This Owner's Manual describes all mod- els, series and optional equipment for your vehicle that were available at the time of going to press. National variations are pos- sible. Note that your vehicle may not be equipped with all of the functions descri- bed. This is also the case for systems and functions relevant to safety.

i Read the information on qualified special-

ist workshops: (Y page 26).

Exterior lighting General notes For reasons of safety, Mercedes-Benz recom- mends that you drive with the lights switched on even during the daytime. Therefore, your vehicle is equipped with special daytime driv- ing lamps. In some countries, operation of the headlamps varies due to legal requirements and self-imposed obligations.

Driving abroad General notes If your journey takes you to countries where vehicles are driven on the opposite side of the road to the country in which the vehicle is registered, your headlamps must be switched to symmetrical dipped beam as soon as pos- sible after crossing the border (exception: vehicles with static LED headlamps). This pre- vents oncoming traffic from being dazzled. Symmetrical lights do not illuminate as large an area of the edge of the carriageway.

Vehicles with static LED headlamps It is not necessary to switch your headlamps to symmetrical dipped beam when driving in countries where vehicles are driven on the opposite side of the road to the country in which the vehicle is registered. Legal require-

ments are fulfilled without switching the headlamps to symmetrical dipped beam.

Vehicles with Intelligent Light System X Before crossing the border, set the head- lamps to symmetrical dipped beam and after returning back to asymmetrical dipped beam via the "Dipped-beam head- lamps for driving on the right/left" function in the on-board computer (Y page 282).

If the headlamps are converted to symmetri- cal dipped beam, the "motorway mode" and "extended range foglamps" functions are not available.

Intelligent Light System General notes The Intelligent Light System is a system that adjusts the headlamps automatically to suit the prevailing driving and weather conditions. It offers advanced functions for improved illu- mination of the road surface, e.g. depending on the vehicle speed or weather conditions. The system includes the active light function, cornering light function, motorway mode and extended range foglamps. The system is only active when it is dark. You can activate or deactivate the "Intelligent Light System" using the on-board computer (Y page 282).

Active light function

Exterior lighting 141

way, relevant areas remain illuminated while driving. This allows you to recognise pedes- trians, cyclists and animals. Active: when the lights are switched on.

Cornering light function

The cornering light function improves the illu- mination of the road over a wide angle in the direction you are turning, enabling better vis- ibility in tight bends, for example. It can only be activated when the dipped-beam head- lamps are switched on. Active: Rif you are driving at speeds below

40 km/h and switch on the turn signal or turn the steering wheel

Rif you are driving at speeds between

40 km/h and 70 km/h and turn the steer- ing wheel

Not active: if you are driving at speeds above 40 km/h or switch off the turn signal or turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead posi- tion. The cornering lamp may remain lit for a short time, but is automatically switched off after no more than three minutes.

The active light function is a system that moves the headlamps according to the steer- ing movements of the front wheels. In this

Active: if you are driving at a speed above 110 km/h and do not make any large steering movements for at least 1,000 m or if you are driving at a speed above 130 km/h. Not active: if you are driving at speeds below 80 km/h following activation.

Extended range foglamps

The extended range foglamps reduce the glare experienced by the driver and improve the illumination of the edge of the carriage- way. Active: if you are driving at speeds below 70 km/h and you switch on the rear foglamp. Not active: if, following activation, you are driving at speeds above 100 km/h or if you switch off the rear foglamp.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist Important safety notes G WARNING Adaptive Highbeam Assist does not recognise road users: Rwho have no lights, e.g. pedestrians Rwho have poor lighting, e.g. cyclists Rwhose lighting is blocked, e.g. by a barrier In very rare cases, Adaptive Highbeam Assist recognises road users too late or not at all. In this, or in similar situations, the automatic main-beam headlamps will not be deactivated or activated regardless. There is a risk of an accident. Always carefully observe the traffic conditions and switch off the main-beam headlamps in good time.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist cannot take into account road, weather or traffic conditions. Adaptive Highbeam Assist is only an aid. You are responsible for adjusting the vehicle's lighting to the prevailing light, visibility and traffic conditions. In particular, the detection of obstacles can be restricted if there is: Rpoor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavy rain or

snow

Exterior lighting 143

You can use this function to set the head- lamps to change between dipped beam and main beam automatically. The system recog- nises vehicles with their lights on, either approaching from the opposite direction or travelling in front of your vehicle, and conse- quently switches the headlamps from main beam to dipped beam. The system automatically adapts the dipped- beam headlamp range depending on the dis- tance to the other vehicle. Once the system no longer detects any other vehicles, it switches on the main-beam headlamps again. The system's optical sensor is located behind the windscreen near the overhead control panel.

If you are driving at speeds above approx- imately 30 km/h and no other road users are recognised: the main-beam headlamps are switched on automatically. The K indicator lamp in the instrument cluster also lights up. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus Important safety notes G WARNING Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus does not rec- ognise road users: Rwho have no lights, e.g. pedestrians Rwho have poor lighting, e.g. cyclists Rwhose lighting is blocked, e.g. by a barrier In very rare cases, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus may not recognise road users who do have lights, or may recognise them too late. In this, or in similar situations, the automatic main-beam headlamps will not be deactivated or will be activated despite the presence of other road users. There is a risk of an acci- dent. Always carefully observe the traffic conditions and switch off the main-beam headlamps in good time.

Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus cannot take into account road, weather or traffic condi- tions. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus is only an aid. You are responsible for adjusting the vehicle's lighting to the prevailing light, visi- bility and traffic conditions. In particular, the detection of obstacles can be restricted if there is: Rpoor visibility, e.g. due to fog, heavy rain or

snow

Rdirt on the sensors or if the sensors are

obscured

With Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, you can automatically switch between dipped-beam, partial main-beam and main-beam head- lamps. Partial main-beam illumination is a form of illumination whereby the main beam is direc- ted past other road users. Other road users are thus kept out of the main beam. This pre- vents glare. If there is a vehicle in front, for example, the main-beam headlamps illumi- nate the areas to its right and left, and the vehicle in front is illuminated by the dipped- beam headlamps. The system automatically adapts the dipped- beam headlamp range depending on the dis- tance to the other vehicle. Once the system no longer detects any other vehicles, it switches on the main-beam headlamps again. If the main-beam or partial main-beam head- lamps are causing too much reflection from traffic signs, the lights are automatically dim- med and glare for the driver caused by the reflections is thus avoided. The system's optical sensor is located behind the windscreen near the overhead control panel.

Windscreen wipers Switching the windscreen wipers on/ off ! Do not operate the windscreen wipers when the windscreen is dry, as this could damage the wiper blades. Moreover, dust that has collected on the windscreen can scratch the glass if wiping takes place when the windscreen is dry. If it is necessary to switch on the wind- screen wipers in dry weather conditions, always operate them using washer fluid.

! If the windscreen wipers leave smears on the windscreen after the vehicle has been washed in an automatic car wash, this may be due to wax or other residue. Clean the windscreen with washer fluid after an auto- matic car wash.

! Intermittent wiping with rain sensor: due to optical influences and the windscreen becoming dirty in dry weather conditions, the windscreen wipers may be activated inadvertently. This could damage the wind- screen wiper blades or scratch the wind- screen. For this reason, you should always switch off the windscreen wipers in dry weather.

sponding position.

In the Ä or Å position, the appropriate wiping frequency is set automatically accord- ing to the intensity of the rain. In the Å position, the rain sensor is more sensitive than in the Ä position, causing the wind- screen wipers to wipe more frequently. If the wiper blades are worn, the windscreen will no longer be wiped properly. This could prevent you from observing the traffic condi- tions. Replace the wiper blades twice a year, ideally in spring and autumn.

Replacing the wiper blades Important safety notes G WARNING If the windscreen wipers begin to move while you are changing the wiper blades, you can be trapped by the wiper arm. There is a risk of injury. Always switch off the windscreen wipers and ignition before changing the wiper blades.

! To avoid damaging the windscreen wiper blades, make sure that you touch only the wiper arm of the windscreen wiper.

! Never open the bonnet/tailgate if a wiper arm is folded away from the windscreen/ rear window.

Never fold a windscreen wiper arm without a wiper blade back onto the windscreen/ rear window. Hold the windscreen wiper arm firmly when you change the wiper blade. If you release the wiper arm without a wiper blade and it falls onto the windscreen/rear window, the windscreen/rear window may be damaged by the force of the impact. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the wiper blades changed at a qualified specialist workshop.
