Cargo capacity: The cargo capacity of your vehicle will increase or decrease depending on the weight and the number of occupants and the tongue load, if your vehicle is equipped with a trailer.


Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit (1)Locate the statement "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX pounds'' on your vehicle's placard. (2)Determine the combined weight of the driver and passengers that will be riding in your vehicle.


(3)Subtract the combined weight of the driver and passengers from XXX kilograms or XXX pounds.


(4)The resulting figure equals the avail- able amount of cargo and luggage load capacity. For example, if the "XXX" amount equals 1400 lbs, and there will be five 150 lb. passengers in your vehicle, the amount of avail- able cargo and luggage load capac- ity is 650 lbs. (1400-750 (5 x 150) = 650 lbs.)


(5)Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle. That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calcu- lated in Step 4.


(6)If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be trans- ferred to your vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how this re- duces the available cargo and lug- gage load capacity of your vehicle.

Refer to your vehicle's tire and loading information label for specific informa- tion about your vehicle's capacity weight and seating positions. The combined weight of the driver, passengers and cargo should never exceed your vehicle's capacity weight.


C190G01A The compliance label is located on the driver's side of the center piller outer panel.


The label shows the maximum allow- able weight of the fully loaded vehicle. This is called the GVWR (Gross Ve- hicle Weight Rating). The GVWR in- cludes the weight of the vehicle, all occupants, fuel and cargo.

This label also tells you the maximum weights that can be supported by the front and rear axles, called Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). To find out the actual loads on your front and rear axles, you need to go to a weigh station and weigh your vehicle. Your dealer can help you with this. Be sure to spread out your load equally on both sides of the centerline.


WARNING:


o Never exceed the GVWR for your vehicle, the GAWR for either the front or rear axle and vehicle ca- pacity weight. Exceeding these rat- ings can cause an accident or vehicle damage. You can calcu- late the weight of your load by weighing the items (or people) before putting them in the vehicle. Be careful not to overload your vehicle.

! WARNING:


o Do not load your vehicle any heavier than the GVWR, either the maximum front or rear GAWR and vehicle capacity weight. If you do, parts, including tires on your ve- hicle can break, and it can change the way your vehicle handles and braking ability. This could cause you to lose control and crash. Also, overloading can shorten the life of your vehicle.


WARNING:


o Overloading your vehicle can cause heat buildup in your vehicle's tires and possible tire failure that could lead to a crash. o Overloading your vehicle can cause increased stopping dis- tances that could lead to a crash. o A crash resulting from poor han- dling vehicle damage, tire failure, or increased stopping distances could result in serious injury or death.


NOTE: o Overloading your vehicle may cause damage. Repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Do not overload your vehicle.


o Using heavier suspension com- ponents to get added durability might not change your weight rat- ings. Ask your dealer to help you load your vehicle the right way.


The label will help you decide how much cargo and installed equipment your vehicle can carry.


If you carry items inside your vehicle – like suitcases, tools, packages, or any- thing else – they more as fast as the vehicle goes. If you have to stop or turn quickly, or if there is a crash, the items will keep going and can cause an injury if they strikes the driver or a passenger.

IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START

WARNING:


If the engine will not start, do not push or pull the car to start it. This could result in a collision or cause other damage. In addi- tion, push or pull starting may cause the catalytic converter to be overloaded and create a fire hazard.


2. Check the battery connections to be sure


they are clean and tight.


3. Turn on the interior light. If the light dims or goes out when you operate the starter, the battery is discharged.


4. Check the starter connections to be sure


they are securely tightened.


5. Do not push or pull the vehicle to start it. See


instructions for "Jump Starting".

2. Turn on your emergency flashers. 3. Try to start the engine again. If your vehicle will not start, contact a Hyundai dealer or seek other qualified assistance.

If the engine stalls at a crossroad or crossing, set the shift lever in the N (Neutral) position and then push the vehicle to a safe place. If your vehicle has a manual transaxle not equipped with the ignition lock switch, the vehicle can move forward by shifting to the 2(second) or 3(third) gear and then turning the starter without depressing the clutch pedal.

WARNING:


The gas produced by the battery during the jump-start operation is highly explosive. If these instructions are not followed exactly, serious personal injury and damage to the vehicle may occur! If you are not sure how to follow this procedure, seek qualified assistance. Automobile batteries contain sulfuric acid. This is poisonous and highly corrosive. When jump starting, wear pro- tective glasses and be careful not to get acid on yourself, your clothing or on the car.


o If you should accidentally get acid on your skin or in your eyes, immediately remove any contaminated clothing and flush the area with clear water for at least 15 minutes. Then promptly obtain medical attention. If you must be transported to an emergency facil- ity, continue to apply water to the affected area with a sponge or cloth.


o The gas produced by the battery during the jump-start operation is highly explosive. Do not smoke or allow a spark or an open flame in the vicinity.


o The battery being used to provide the jump start must be 12-volt. If you cannot deter- mine that it is a 12-volt battery, do not attempt to use it for the jump start.


WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY


o To jump start a car with a discharged battery,


follow this procedure exactly:


1.


If the booster battery is installed in another vehicle, be sure the two vehicles are not touching.


2. Turn off all unnecessary lights and acces-


sories in both vehicles.


3. Attach the clamps of the jumper cable in the exact location shown on the previous page. First, attach one clamp of the jumper cable to the positive (+) post or cable of the dis- charged battery. Then attach the other end of the same cable to the positive (+) post or cable of the booster battery. Next, using the other cable, attach one clamp to the negative (-) post or cable of the booster battery. Then attach the other end of that cable to a solid metal part of the engine of the vehicle with the discharged battery away from the battery. Do not connect the cable to any moving part. 4. Start the engine in the car with the booster battery and let it run for a few minutes. This will help to assure that the booster battery is fully charged. During the jumping operation, run the engine in this vehicle at about 2,000
rpm.


5. Start the engine in the car with the dis- charged battery using the normal starting procedure. After the engine starts, leave the jumper cables connected and let the engine run at fast idle or about 2000 rpm for several minutes.

6. Carefully remove the jumper cables in the


reverse order of attachment.


If you do not know why your battery became discharged (because the lights were left on, etc.), have the charging system checked by your Hyundai dealer.


IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS


D030A02A-AAT If your temperature gauge indicates overheat- ing, you experience a loss of power, or hear loud pinging or knocking and the engine is probably too hot. If this happens and, you should:


1. Pull off the road and stop as soon as it is safe


to do so.

2. Place the gear selector lever in "P" (auto- matic), or neutral (manual transaxle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is on, turn it off. If engine coolant is running out under the car or steam is coming out from the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the engine coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of engine coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.


4. Check to see if the water pump drive belt is missing. If it is not missing, check to see that it is tight. If the drive belt seems to be satisfactory, check for engine coolant leak- ing from the radiator, hoses or under the car. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to be draining from it when you stop).


WARNING:


While the engine is running, keep hair, hands, and clothing away from moving parts such as the fan and drive belts to prevent injury.


5.


If the water pump drive belt is broken or engine coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately and call the nearest Hyundai dealer for assistance.


WARNING:


Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. This can allow coolant to be blown out of the opening and cause seri- ous burns.

If you cannot find the cause of the overheat- ing, wait until the engine temperature has returned to normal. Then, if the engine cool- ant has been lost, carefully add water to the reservoir (Page 6-8) to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the halfway mark.


7. Proceed with caution, keeping alert for fur- ther signs of overheating. If overheating happens again, call a Hyundai dealer for assistance.


CAUTION:


Serious loss of engine coolant indicates there is a leak in the cooling system and this should be checked as soon as possible by a Hyundai dealer.


TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

Each tire, including the spare (if pro- vided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pres- sure recommended by the vehicle manu- facturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you should de- termine the proper tire inflation pres- sure for those tires.)


As an added safety feature, your ve- hicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure tell- tale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accord- ingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle’s han- dling and stopping ability.


Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’s responsibility to maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.


WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY


Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operat- ing properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is provided by a separate tell- tale, which displays the symbol "TPMS" when illuminated. When the malfunc- tion indicator is illuminated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended. TPMS mal- functions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after re- placing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replace- ment or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function prop- erly.


Low tire pressure telltale


When the tire pressure monitoring sys- tem warning telltale is illuminated, one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Immediately reduce your speed, avoid hard cornering and anticipate increased stopping distances. You should stop and check your tires as soon as pos- sible. Inflate the tires to the proper pressure as indicated on the vehicle’s placard or tire inflation pressure label located on the driver’s side center pillar outer panel. If you cannot reach a ser- vice station or if the tire cannot hold the newly added air, replace the low pres- sure tire with the temporary spare tire. Then the TPMS malfunction indicator may turn on and the Low Tire Pressure telltale may turn off after restarting and about 20 minutes of continuous driving before you have the low-pressure tire repaired and replaced on the vehicle.


CAUTION:


In winter or cold weather, the low tire pressure telltale may be illuminated if the tire pressure was adjusted to the recommended tire inflation pres- sure in warm weather. It does not mean your TPMS is malfunctioning because the decreased temperature leads to a proportional lowering of tire pressure. When you drive your vehicle from a warm area to a cold area or from a cold area to a warm area, or the outside temperature is greatly higher or lower, you should check the tire inflation pressure and adjust the tires to the recommended tire inflation pressure.


WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY


! WARNING:


Significantly low tire pressure makes the vehicle unstable and can contrib- ute to loss of vehicle control and increased braking distances. Continued driving on low pressure tires will cause the tires to overheat and fail.


TPMS (Tire pressure monitoring system) malfunction telltale


The TPMS malfunction indicator turns on and stays on when there is a problem with the Tire Pressure Monitoring Sys- tem. If the system is able to correctly detect an under-inflation warning at the same time as system failure then it will illuminate both the TPMS malfunction and the low tire pressure telltale e.g. if Front Left sensor fails, the TPMS mal- function indicator turns, but if Front Right, Rear Left, or Rear Right tire is under-inflated, the low tire pressure tell-


tale may turn on at the same time as the TPMS malfunction indicator. Have the system checked by an autho- rized Hyundai dealer as soon as pos- sible to determine the cause of the problem.


NOTE: o The TPMS malfunction indicator may be illuminated if the vehicle is operated in areas close to elec- tric power supply cables or radio transmitters such as near police stations, government and public offices, broadcasting stations, military installations, airports, or transmitting towers, etc. which can interfere with normal operation of the Tire Pressure Monitoring Sys- tem (TPMS).


o The TPMS malfunction indicator may be illuminated if snow chains some electronic devices, such as notebook computers, are used in the vehicle. This can interfere with normal operation of the Tire Pres- sure Monitoring System (TPMS).


o If there is a failed tire sensor, it is possible for the TPMS to tempo- rarily learn a replacement sensor if closely driven to another vehicle that is also equipped with TPMS. In rare cases, this may tempo- rarily delay the TPMS malfunction indicator from turning on.


Changing a tire with TPMS If you have a flat tire, the Low Tire Pressure telltale will turn on. Have the flat tire repaired by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible or replace the flat tire with the temporary spare tire. NEVER use a puncture-repairing agent to repair and/or inflate a low pressure tire. If used, you will have to replace the tire pressure sensor. Each wheel is equipped with a tire pressure sensor mounted inside the tire behind the valve stem. You must use TPMS specific wheels. It is recom- mended that you always have your tires serviced by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.


WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY


After you replace the low pressure tire with the spare tire, the TPMS malfunc- tion indicator or the Low Tire Pressure telltale may illuminate after restarting and about 20 minutes of continuous driving. Once the low pressure tire is re-inflated to the recommended pressure and in- stalled on the vehicle, the TPMS mal- function indicator and the low tire pres- sure telltale will extinguish. If the low pressure and TPMS malfunction indi- cators are not extinguished after about 20 minutes of continuous driving, please visit an authorized Hyundai dealer. You may not be able to identify a low tire by simply looking at it. Always use a good quality tire pressure gauge to measure the tire's inflation pressure. Please note that a tire that is hot (from being driven) will have a higher pres- sure measurement than a tire that is cold (from sitting stationary for at least 3 hours and driven less than 1 mile during that 3 hour period). Allow the tire to cool before measuring the inflation pressure.


Always be sure the tire is cold before inflating to the recommended pressure. A cold tire means the vehicle has been sitting for 3 hours and driven for less than 1 mile in that 3 hour period.


NOTE: o Do not use any tire sealant if your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. The liquid sealant can damage the tire pressure sensors.


o In order for the system to correctly monitor tires for under-inflation, there should be a total of exactly 4
sensors fitted to each of the four driven wheel positions. There should be no other sensors in the vehicle include spare tire position since this could cause the system to monitor the wrong sensors.


WARNING - TPMS


o The TPMS cannot alert you to se- vere and sudden tire damage caused by external factors.


o If you feel any vehicle instability, immediately take your foot off the accelerator and slowly move to a safe position off the road.


WARNING:


Tampering with, modifying, or dis- abling the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) components may interfere with the system's ability to warn the driver of low tire pressure conditions and/or TPMS malfunc- tions. Tampering with, modifying, or disabling the Tire Pressure Moni- toring System (TPMS) components may void the warranty for that por- tion of the vehicle.

SPARE TIRE

Temporary Spare Tire The following instructions for the tem- porary spare tire should be observed:


1. Check inflation pressure as soon as practical after installing the spare tire, and adjust to the specified pres- sure. The tire pressure should be periodically checked and maintained at the specified pressure while the tire is stored.

2. The spare tire should only be used temporarily and should be returned to the luggage compartment as soon as the original tire can be repaired or replaced.

4. As the temporary spare tire is spe- cifically designed for your car, it should not be used on any other vehicle.


5. The temporary spare tire should not be used on any other wheels, nor should standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the temporary spare wheel. If such use is attempted, damage to these items or other car components may occur.


6. The temporary spare tire pressure should be checked once a month while the tire is stored.

o Do not use snow chains with your


temporary spare tire.


o Do not use more than one tempo-


rary spare tire at a time.


o Do not tow a trailer while the tem-


porary spare tire is installed.

The temporary spare tire is for emer- gency use only. Do not operate your vehicle on this temporary spare at speeds over 50 mph (80 kmh). The original tire should be repaired or replaced as soon as is possible to avoid failure of the spare possibly leading to personal injury or death.

Handling the Spare Tire


HGK4010A Remove the installation bolt to remove the spare tire. To replace the spare tire in its storage compartment, tighten the bolt firmly with your fingers until there is no more play in the spare tire.

1. Obtain Spare Tire and Tool


1. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal and let the car slow down while driving straight ahead. Do not apply the brakes immediately or attempt to pull off the road as this may cause a loss of control. When the car has slowed to such a speed that it is safe to do so, brake carefully and pull off the road. Drive off the road as far as possible and park on firm, level ground. If you are on a divided high- way, do not park in the median area between the two traffic lanes.


2. When the car is stopped, turn on your emergency hazard flashers, set the parking brake and put the transaxle in "P" (automatic) or reverse (manual transaxle).


3. Have all passengers get out of the car. Be sure they all get out on the side of the car that is away from traffic.


4. Change the tire following the instruc- tions provided on the following pages.

The procedure described on the follow- ing pages can be used to rotate tires as well as to change a flat tire. When preparing to change a flat tire, check to be sure the gear selector lever is in "P" (automatic transaxle) or reverse gear (manual transaxle) and that the parking brake is set, then:

The jack is located behind the right side luggage trim. Remove the jack cover by unscrewing the bolts. Turn the jack end counterclockwise to lower the jack height by using a screw driver or wrench bar and remove it from the bracket.

Block the wheel that is diagonally oppo- site from the flat to keep the vehicle from rolling when the car is raised on the jack.

The wheel nuts should be loosened slightly before raising the car. To loosen the nuts, turn the wrench handle coun- terclockwise. When doing this, be sure that the socket is seated completely over the nut so it cannot slip off. For maximum leverage, position the wrench so the handle is to the left as shown in the drawing. Then, while holding the wrench near the end of the handle, push down on it with steady pressure. Do not remove the nuts at this time. Just loosen them about one-half turn.

Raise the car high enough so that the fully inflated spare tire can be installed. To do this, you will need more ground clearance than is required to remove the flat tire.


! WARNING:


Do not get under the car when it is supported by the jack! This is very dangerous as the jack could fall and cause serious injury or death. No one should stay in the car while the jack is being used.

The base of the jack should be placed on firm, level ground. The jack should be positioned as shown in the drawing.

D060F01MC After inserting a bar into the wheel nut wrench, install the bar into the jack as shown in the drawing. To raise the vehicle, turn the jack handle clockwise. As the jack begins to raise the vehicle, double check that it is properly posi- tioned and will not slip. If the jack is on soft ground or sand, place a board, brick, flat stone or other object under the base of the jack to keep it from sinking.

6. Changing Wheels

Loosen the wheel nuts and remove them with your fingers. Slide the wheel off the studs and lay it flat so it cannot roll away. To put the wheel on the hub, pick up the spare tire, line up the holes with the studs and slide the wheel onto them. If this is difficult, tip the wheel slightly and get the top hole in the wheel lined up with the top stud. Then jiggle the wheel back and forth until the wheel can be slid over the other studs.

Wheels and wheel covers may have sharp edges. Handle them carefully to avoid possible severe injury. Be- fore putting the wheel into place, be sure that there is nothing on the hub or wheel (such as mud, tar, gravel, etc.) that interferes with the wheel from fitting solidly against the hub. If there is, remove it. If there is not good contact on the mounting sur- face between the wheel and hub, the


wheel nuts could come loose and cause the loss of a wheel. Loss of a wheel may result in loss of control of the vehicle. This may cause serious injury or death.

If you have a tire gauge, remove the valve cap and check the air pressure. If the pressure is lower than recom- mended, drive slowly to the nearest service station and inflate to the correct pressure. If it is too high, adjust it until it is correct. Always reinstall the valve cap after checking or adjusting tire pressure. If the cap is not replaced, air may leak from the tire. If you lose a valve cap, buy another and install it as soon as possible.

D120A01A-AAT If you lose your keys, many Hyundai dealers can make you a new key if you have your key number. If you lock the keys inside your car and you cannot obtain a new key, many Hyundai dealers can use special tools to open the door for you.


For emergency towing when no commercial tow vehicle is available, attach a tow cable, chain or strap to one of the towing hooks under the front /rear of your car. Do not attempt to tow your vehicle in this manner on any unpaved surface. This could result in serious damage to your car. Nor should towing be attempted if the wheels, drive train, axles, steering or brakes are dam- aged. Before towing, be sure the transaxle is in neutral and the key is in "ACC" (with the engine off) or in the "ON" position (with the engine running). A driver must be in the towed car to steer it and operate the brakes.

The most common causes of corrosion on your car are:


o Road salt, dirt and moisture that is allowed to


accumulate underneath the car.


o Removal of paint or protective coatings by stones, gravel, abrasion or minor scrapes and dents which leave unprotected metal exposed to corrosion.

If you live in an area where your car is regularly exposed to corrosive materials, corrosion pro- tection is particularly important. Some of the common causes of accelerated corrosion are road salts, dust control chemicals, ocean air and industrial pollution.

Moisture creates the conditions in which corro- sion is most likely to occur. For example, cor- rosion is accelerated by high humidity, particu- larly when temperatures are just above freez- ing. In such conditions, the corrosive material is kept in contact with the car surfaces by mois- ture that is slow to evaporate. Mud is particularly corrosive because it is slow to dry and holds moisture in contact with the vehicle. Although the mud appears to be dry, it can still retain the moisture and promote corro- sion. High temperatures can also accelerate corro- sion of parts that are not properly ventilated so the moisture can be dispersed. For all these reasons, it is particularly important to keep your car clean and free of mud or accumulations of other materials. This applies not only to the visible surfaces but particularly to the underside of the car.

The best way to prevent corrosion is to keep your car clean and free of corrosive materials. Attention to the underside of the car is particu- larly important.


o If you live in a high-corrosion area — where road salts are used, near the ocean, areas with industrial pollution, acid rain, etc.—, you should take extra care to prevent corrosion. In winter, hose off the underside of your car at least once a month and be sure to clean the underside thoroughly when winter is over.


o When cleaning underneath the car, give particular attention to the components under the fenders and other areas that are hidden from view. Do a thorough job; just dampening the accumulated mud rather than washing it away will accelerate corrosion rather than prevent it. Water under high pressure and steam are particularly effective in removing accumulated mud and corrosive materials.


o When cleaning lower door panels, rocker panels and frame members, be sure that drain holes are kept open so that moisture can escape and not be trapped inside to ac- celerate corrosion.

Don’t park your car in a damp, poorly ventilated garage. This creates a favorable environment for corrosion. This is particularly true if you wash your car in the garage or drive it into the garage when it is still wet or covered with snow, ice or mud. Even a heated garage can contrib- ute to corrosion unless it is well ventilated so moisture is dispersed.

Scratches or chips in the finish should be covered with "touch-up" paint as soon as pos- sible to reduce the possibility of corrosion. If bare metal is showing through, the attention of a qualified body and paint shop is recommended.


Bird droppings : Bird droppings are highly cor- rosive and may damage painted surfaces in just a few hours. Always remove bird droppings as soon as possible.

Moisture can collect under the floor mats and carpeting to cause corrosion. Check under the mats periodically to be sure the carpeting is dry. Use particular care if you carry fertilizers, clean- ing materials or chemicals in the car. These should be carried only in proper contain- ers and any spills or leaks should be cleaned up, flushed with clear water and thoroughly dried.


Never wash your car when the surface is hot from being in the sun. Always wash your car in the shade.


Wash your car frequently. Dirt is abrasive and can scratch the paint if it is not removed. Air pollution or acid rain may damage the paint and trim through chemical action if pollutants are allowed to remain in contact with the surface. If you live near the ocean or in an area where road salts or dust control chemicals are used, you should pay particular attention to the underside of the car. Start by rinsing the car to remove dust and loose dirt. In winter, or if you have driven through mud or muddy water, be sure to thor- oughly clean the underside as well. Use a hard direct stream of water to remove accumulations of mud or corrosive materials. High pressure car washes may cause water to enter your vehicle. Use a good quality car-washing solu- tion and follow the manufacturer's directions on the package. These are available at your Hyundai dealer or auto parts outlet. Don't use strong household detergents, gasoline, strong solvents or abrasive cleaning powders as these may damage the finish. Use a clean sponge or cloth, rinse it frequently and don't damage the finish by rubbing too hard. For stubborn spots, dampen them frequently and remove them a little at a time.


4 CORROSION PREVENTION AND APPEARANCE CARE


To clean whitewall tires, use a stiff brush or soapy steel-wool scouring pad. To clean plastic wheel covers, use a clean sponge or soft cloth and water.


To clean cast aluminum alloy wheels, use a mild soap or neutral detergent. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Protect the bare-metal surfaces by cleaning, polishing and waxing. Because alumi- num is subject to corrosion, be sure to give aluminum alloy wheels special attention in win- ter. If you drive on salted roads, clean the wheels thoroughly afterwards.


After washing, be sure to rinse thoroughly. If soapy water dries on the finish, streaking will result.


When the weather is warm and the humidity low, you may find it necessary to rinse each section immediately after washing to avoid streaking.


After rinsing, dry the car using a damp chamois or soft, absorbent cloth. The reason for drying the car is to remove water from the car so it will dry without water spots. Don't rub, this can damage the finish.


CAUTION:


If you find any nicks or scratches in the paint, use touch-up paint to cover them to prevent corrosion. To protect the paintwork of the car against corrosion, you must clean your Hyundai (at least once a month). Give special attention to the removal of salt, mud and other sub- stances on the underside of the splashboards of the car. Make sure that the outlets and the underside of the doors are open. Paint damage can be caused by small accumulation of tar, industrial precipitation, tree resin, insects and bird droppings, when not removed immediately. If water alone is not strong enough to remove the accumulated dirt, use a mild car washing solu- tion. Be sure to rinse the surface after washing to remove the solution. Never allow the solution to dry on the painted surfaces.

CLEANING THE INTERIOR

To clean the vinyl upholstery, first remove loose dirt and dust with a vacuum cleaner. Then apply a solution of mild soap or detergent and water using a clean sponge or soft cloth. Allow this to stay on the surface to loosen the dirt, then wipe with a clean damp sponge or cloth. If all the dirt stains are not removed, repeat this procedure until the upholstery is clean. Do not use gaso- line, solvent, paint thinner or other strong clean- ers.

Special precautions must be observed to pre- serve the appearance of the bumpers on your Hyundai. They are:


o Be careful not to spill battery electrolyte or hydraulic brake fluid on the bumpers. If you do, wash it off immediately with clear water. o Be gentle when cleaning the bumper sur- faces. They are made of soft plastic and the surface can be damaged if mistreated. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Use warm water and mild soap or car-washing solution.


o Do not expose the bumpers to high tem- peratures. For example, if you have your car repainted, do not leave the bumpers on the car if the car is going to be placed in a high- temperature paint booth.


Don’t use gasoline, strong solvents or corro- sive cleaning agents. These can damage the finish of the car. To remove road tar, use turpentine on a clean, soft cloth or commercially available bug and tar remover. Be gentle. To remove dead insects or tree sap, use warm water and mild soap or car-washing solution. Soak the spot and rub gently. If the paint has lost its luster, use a commercial car-cleaning polish.

Always wash and dry the car before polishing or waxing or using a combination cleaner and wax. Use a good quality commercial product and follow the manufacturer’s directions on the container. Polish and wax the bright trim pieces as well as the paint.

E040B01A-AAT To Clean the Leather Upholstery (If Installed)


In the normal course of use, leather upholstered surfaces will, like any material, pick-up dust and dirt. This dust and dirt must be cleaned off or it may work into the surface of the leather, causing damage.


Fine leather needs care, and should be cleaned when necessary. Washing leather thoroughly with soap and water will keep your leather lustrous, beautiful and ensure you have many years of wear. Take a piece of cheese cloth and using any mild soap and lukewarm water, work up a good lather. Thoroughly wash the leather. Wipe clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry with soft cloth. Do this as often as the leather becomes soiled.


During tanning operations, sufficient oils are incorporated through processing that none need be applied during the life of the leather. Oil applied to the finished surface will in no way help the leather and may do more harm than good. Varnishes and furniture polishes should never be used under any conditions.

Use a foam-type carpet cleaner. Cleaners of this type are available in aerosol cans in liquid form or powder. Read the instructions and follow them exactly. Using a vacuum cleaner with the appropriate attachment, remove as much dirt from the carpets as possible. Apply the foam following the manufacturer’s direc- tions, then rub in overlapping circles. Do not add water. These cleaners work best when the carpet is kept as dry as possible.

To clean the seat belts, use a cloth or sponge with mild soap or detergent and warm water. Do not use strong detergents, dye, bleach or abra- sive materials on the seat belts as this may weaken the fabric. While cleaning the belts, inspect them for ex- cessive wear, cuts, fraying or other signs of damage and replace them if necessary.

To ensure that you receive the greatest number of miles of satisfying operation from your Hyundai, certain maintenance procedures must be per- formed. Although careful design and engineer- ing have reduced these to a minimum, those that are required are of the utmost importance. It is your responsibility to have these mainte- nance procedures performed to comply with the terms of the warranties covering your new Hyundai. The Owner's Handbook supplied with your new vehicle provides further information about these warranties.

The maintenance required for your Hyundai can be divided into three main areas:


o Specified scheduled procedures o General checks o Do-it-yourself maintenance


These are the procedures such as inspections, adjustments and replacements that are listed in the maintenance charts starting on page 5-4. These procedures must be performed at the intervals shown in the maintenance schedule to assure that your warranty remains in effect. Although it is strongly recommended that they be performed by the trained technicians at your Hyundai dealer, these procedures may be per- formed at any qualified service facility. It is suggested that genuine Hyundai service parts be used for any required repairs or re- placements. Other parts of equivalent quality such as engine oil, engine coolant, manual or auto transaxle oil, brake fluid and so on which are not supplied by Hyundai Motor Company or its distributor may be used without affecting your warranty coverage but you should always be sure these are equivalent to the quality of the original Hyundai parts. Your Owner's Hand- book provides further information about your warranty coverage.
