Air is discharged through the face level vents. If the "MAX A/C" mode is selected, the A/C will turn on automatically and "Recirculation" mode will be activated.

Mode selection The mode selection knob controls the direction of the air flow through the venti- lation system. Air can be directed to the floor, dash- board outlets, or windshield. Five sym- bols are used to represent Face, Bi- Level, Floor, Floor-Defrost and Defrost air position. The MAX A/C mode is used to cool the inside of the vehicle faster. The "OFF" mode is used to turn the blower fan off.

Face-Level (B, D)

Air flow is directed toward the upper body and face. Additionally, each outlet can be controlled to direct the air discharged from the outlet.

Bi-Level (B, D, C, E)

Air flow is discharged towards the face and floor.

Instrument panel vents If air flow control is not satisfactory, check the instrument panel vents. The outlet port can be opened or closed separately using the horizontal thumbwheel. To close the vent, rotate it left to the maxi- mum position. To open the vent, rotate it right to the desired position. Also, you can adjust the direction of air delivery from these vents using the vent control lever as shown.

Temperature control The temperature control knob allows you to control the temperature of the air flow- ing from the ventilation system. To change the air temperature in the pas- senger compartment, turn the knob to the right position for warm and hot air or left position for cooler air.

Air intake control This is used to select outside (fresh) air position or recirculated air position. To change the air intake control position, push the control button.

✽✽ NOTICE It should be noted that prolonged oper- ation of the heating in recirculated air position will cause fogging of the wind- shield and side windows and the air within the passenger compartment will become stale. In addition, prolonged use of the air conditioning with the recirculated air position selected, will result in excessive- ly dry air in the passenger compart- ment.

• Continued climate control system operation in the recirculated air position may allow humidity to increase inside vehicle which may fog the glass and obscure visibility.

The indicator light on the button is illuminated when the recirculated air position is selected. With the recirculated air position selected, air from passenger compartment will be drawn through the heating system and heated or cooled according to the function selected.

Outside (fresh) air position

The indicator light on the button is not illuminated when the outside (fresh) air position is selected. With the outside (fresh) air position selected, air enters the vehicle from outside and is heated or cooled accord- ing to the function selected.

Air conditioning sys- tem operation may cause engine over- heating. Continue to use the blower fan but turn the air conditioning sys- tem off if the temperature gauge indi- cates engine overheating.

• When opening the windows in humid weather air conditioning may create water droplets inside the vehicle. Since excessive water droplets may cause damage to electrical equipment, air conditioning should only be run with the windows closed.

Operation Tips (cid:129) To keep dust or unpleasant fumes from entering the car through the ventilation system, temporarily set the air intake control to the recirculated air position. Be sure to return the control to the fresh air position when the irritation has passed to keep fresh air in the vehicle. This will help keep the driver alert and comfortable.

(cid:129) Air for the heating/cooling system is drawn in through the grilles just ahead of the windshield. Care should be taken that these are not blocked by leaves, snow, ice or other obstructions. (cid:129) To prevent interior fog on the wind- shield, set the air intake control to the fresh air position and fan speed to the desired position, turn on the air condi- tioning system, and adjust temperature control to desired temperature.

Air conditioning system operation tips (cid:129) If the vehicle has been parked in direct sunlight during hot weather, open the windows for a short time to let the hot air inside the vehicle escape.

(cid:129) To help reduce moisture inside of win- dows on rainy or humid days, decrease the humidity inside the vehicle by oper- ating the air conditioning system.

(cid:129) During air conditioning system opera- tion, you may occasionally notice a slight change in engine speed as the air conditioning compressor cycles. This is a normal system operation characteristic.

(cid:129) Use the air conditioning system every month if only for a few minutes to ensure maximum system perform- ance.

(cid:129) When using the air conditioning sys- tem, you may notice clear water drip- ping (or even puddling) on the ground under the passenger side of the vehi- cle. This is a normal system operation characteristic.

(cid:129) Operating the air conditioning system in the recirculated air position does provide maximum cooling, however, continual operation in this mode may cause the air inside the vehicle to become stale.

Climate control air filter (if equipped) The climate control air filter installed behind the glove box filters the dust or other pollutants that come into the vehi- cle from the outside through the heating and air conditioning system. If dust or other pollutants accumulate in the filter over a period of time, the air flow from the air vents may decrease, resulting in moisture accumulation on the inside of the windshield even when the outside (fresh) air position is selected. If this hap- pens, have the climate control air filter replaced by an authorized Hyundai deal- er.

(cid:129) Replace the filter every 10,000
miles (15,000 km) or once a year. If the car is being driven in severe conditions such as dusty, rough roads,more frequent climate con- trol air filter inspections and changes are required.

Checking the amount of air con- ditioner refrigerant and compres- sor lubricant When the amount of refrigerant is low, the performance of the air conditioning is reduced. Overfilling also has a bad influ- ence on the air conditioning system. Therefore, if abnormal operation is found, have the system inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

CAUTION

The air conditioning system should be serviced by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Improper service may cause serious injury to the per- son performing the service.

✽✽ NOTICE When the performance of the air condi- tioning system is reduced it is important that the correct type and amount of oil and refrigerant is used. Otherwise, dam- age to the compressor and abnormal system operation may occur.

desired temperature. If the temperature is set to the lowest setting LO, the air conditioning system will operate continuously.

3. To turn the automatic operation off, press any button except temperature control button. If you press the mode selection button, air-conditioning but- ton, defrost button, air intake control button or fan speed button, the select- ed function will be controlled manually while other functions operate automat- ically.

Regardless of the temperature setting, when using automatic operation, the air conditioning system can automatically turn on to decrease the humidity inside the vehicle, even if the temperature is set to warm.

Automatic heating and air condi- tioning The automatic climate control system is controlled by simply setting the desired temperature. The Full Automatic Temperature Control (FATC) system automatically controls the heating and cooling system as follows;

Manual heating and air condition- ing The heating and cooling system can be controlled manually as well by pushing buttons other than the AUTO button. In this case, the system works sequentially according to the order of buttons select- ed. When set to the lowest temperature set- ting, the air conditioning will operate con- tinuously.

Temperature conversion If the battery has been discharged or dis- connected, the temperature mode dis- play will reset to Fahrenheit. This is normal condition. You can switch the between Fahrenheit to Centigrade as follows; While depressing the AUTO button, depress the OFF button for 3 seconds or more. Exhaust gas cutoff mode : Air enters the vehicle from the outside. But if exhaust gas enters the vehicle from the outside, the exhaust gas cutoff mode is automatically converted from the out- side air position to the recirculated air position to prevent exhaust gas from entering the vehicle.

✽✽ NOTICE It should be noted that prolonged oper- ation of the heating system in recircula- tion mode will give rise to misting of the windshield and side windows and the air within the passenger compartment will become stale. In addition, prolonged use of the air conditioning with the recircu- lation mode selected may result in the air within the passenger compartment becoming excessively dry.

Air quality control (if equipped) The air inflow from outside vehicle can be automatically controlled. Press the button to activate the air quality control system. When using AQS mode, AQS(Air Quality Control System) automatically senses outdoor air pollutants and minimizes them from entering the vehicle, however, unpleasant or foul odors that might be present may still be noticeable within the vehicle.

Cigarette lighter For the cigarette lighter to work, the igni- tion switch, must be in the ACC position or the ON position. To use the cigarette lighter, push it all the way into its socket. When the element has heated, the lighter will pop out to the "ready" position. Do not hold the cigarette lighter pressed in. This can damage the heating element and create a fire hazard. If it is necessary to replace the cigarette lighter, use only a genuine Hyundai replacement or its approved equivalent.

Adjust the sunvisor extension panel for- ward or backward (4) (if equipped).

How car audio works AM and FM radio signals are broadcast from transmitter towers located around your city.They are intercepted by the radio anten- na on your car. This signal is then received by the radio and sent to your car speakers. When a strong radio signal has reached your vehicle, the precise engineering of your audio system ensures the best pos- sible quality reproduction. However, in some cases the signal coming to your vehicle may not be strong and clear. This can be due to factors such as the dis- tance from the radio station, closeness of other strong radio stations or the pres- ence of buildings, bridges or other large obstructions in the area.

AM broadcasts can be received at greater distances than FM broadcasts. This is because AM radio waves are transmitted at low frequencies. These long, low frequency radio waves can fol- low the curvature of the earth rather than travelling straight out into the atmos- phere. In addition, they curve around obstructions so that they can provide bet- ter signal coverage.

FM broadcasts are transmitted at high frequencies and do not bend to follow the earth's surface. Because of this, FM broadcasts generally begin to fade at short distances from the station. Also, FM signals are easily affected by build- ings, mountains, or other obstructions. This can be caused by a direct and reflect- ed signal from the same station, or by signals from two stations with close frequencies. If this occurs, select another station until the condition has passed.

Using a cellular phone or a two- way radio When a cellular phone is used inside the vehicle, noise may be produced from the audio equipment. This does not mean that something is wrong with the audio equipment. In such a case, use the cellu- lar phone at a place as far as possible from the audio equipment.

CAUTION

When using a communication sys- tem such a cellular phone or a radio set inside the vehicle, a separate external antenna must be fitted. When a cellular phone or a radio set is used with an internal antenna alone,it may interfere with the vehi- cle's electrical system and adverse- ly affect safe operation of the vehi- cle.

Care of cassette tapes (if equipped) (cid:129) Because the thickness of a cassette tape with the total playback time of over 60 minutes (C-60) are too thin, we suggest that you do not use any of them to avoid having tapes being tan- gled.
