Fuel Consumption - 1988 hj75 ute

thinkin bout buying a 1988 diesel hj75 landcruiser ute anyone owned one what are they like on fuel ?

Hi skidin. I drive a 88 hj75 240,000klms. I have had it for 15 years. It has been a great reliable ute. In recent months I have been considering getting something newer in the 4 cylinder range. I spend a bit of time in a 3l deisel hilux, and found it pulls better loaded or unloaded than the cruiser, hills too. I can't justify having to save for months, to pay twice as much for diesel than I need to, and its only getting worse, just to go for a weekend away.

The other point to consider is the motor. At this age, you could get a good run out of it, or it could cost $6000 + for a rebuild. I think they get a bit unpredictable. My brother bought one the same in good nick. 290,000klm on it. We took it to frazer, started developing a knock. Made it home, but did a piston. $6500 for a rebuild. And the ute is probably only worth $4000 now.

Diesel is still cheaper than regular gas - so go for it.

i own a 85 hj75 with a turbo fitted, only have a small tank of 45L so only get 250-300kms which is about 15-18L/100kms. Pretty thirsty if i take her 4bing tho. But plenty of torque and grunt which has got me a few places i wouldnt hav expectd her to go. If your looking for economical diesel an 88 is prob not your best choice, but it is a good round truck and I dont mind paying a bit extra on fuel seeing as how they are value for money truck. And if you do any towing they do it with ease, rather then a 4cly diesel. my 2 cents

Most 3L Hilux i've driven wouldn't pull the skin off a custard?......change the oil and filter every 5000km in a 6cyl diesel Landcruiser and you'll see the best part of 500,000km trouble free. Injectors and pumps can get tired by 200k, maybe why yours is a bit slow and thirsty cruiserhand???

wtf 45L tank? Big dent??? lol Turbo diesel FTW

ive got an 80 series with 478000 on the clock and i service it every 5k, the things weapon 1hz diesel, i get around 13l per 100ks and about 15 when flogging it, i think its resionable on fuel for a big diesel non turbo, if i were you mate id go a 1990 onwards cruiser ute with the 1hz in it, or 1hde the turbo version, either way there reliable and a hell of alot of run to drive

iv got a 2h diesel 75 series and at about $1.50 a litre i get 500 ks to $100 (70 litre tank) Has done 440 thousand but engines still solid

I'm surprised how bad they are. I get 15L/100km out of my TD 6.5L V8 and that's city driving. I'll never complain again lol.

Diesel FTW! Ive got an 05 Rodeo TD 3.0l cab chassis and i get about 8.5ltr to 100km
