Hey, a mate of mine has a gq ute with leaf springs, He is interested in doing a cab swap with a gq wagon so he can have the luxury of coils. So I want to know if a gq ute and gq wagon chassis are the same and will the ute cab just bolt straight onto the wagon chassis, assuming the chassis are the same the ute cab should just bolt right on?
Thanks

u may find the same issue i had when i did a single to dual cab swap on a hilux. the ute can may be missing all the rear mounts for the body of the wagon. chassis is probably the same but just missing mounts.

The CENTRE rear cab mounts ARENT on the wagon chassis
No biggy as most who do body lifts , dont reuse these mounts anyway
The wagon chassis WONT have the tray mounting brackets that the ute chassis has
These can just be removed and rewelded
I think there is some clearance issues between the leafy cabs and the front coil suspension

Patrol 4x4.com , will have more info on that problem

hi mate, i used to fit genuine ute trays to alot of patrols, with the new models, i know that the mounting points of a coil spring are further in than the leafs, we used to have to offset the mounts to get them to fit,.
So maybe same applies to the older models,
Could be just something you should check aswell.

why not just strip the suspension and mounting points off both and runt the wagons coil setup on the ute?
Seems like cutting and re-welding a few points for trailing arms and spring saddles would be simpler and easier than doing a whole cab swap...?

Nah cab swaps pissa piss
Rear tray chassis mounts, you could lift tray or lower at that time
Only 12 bolts holding a wagon body on
Only 6 bolts ,plus the two brackets i mentioned holding the ute cab on

ummm plus all the fitting and fuel lines and brake lines and electrics and so on? and the pain in the arse of having to move them?
I know there are only a few bolts between cab and chassis, its all the other shit that adds up. steering linkages etc etc...
Seriously, a suspension swap would take less time and heed a better result, as youd have the opportunity to brace and strengthen anything. Also, id expect that the suspension and such isnt going to stay stock, so youll have half the stuff pulled off anyway - shocks, springs, panhard rods, trailing arms etc would all be pulled apart anyway.

Disconnect the booster, yes
Disconnect the clutch line ,yes
Disconnect the steering shaft at the box ,yes

Wiring, depends
Then of for a mod plate, reboddy

But i do understand the suspension swap, especially IF your modding or replacing stuff
Dont know IF the bare chassis are identical, most go the body swap

a cab swap will be ten times easier than change the suspension.
i no some one that done it to a rodeo it took them two days one day to strip the old cab and one day to put the new cab on and drive it away.
change the suspension is one big job

It's only rear suspension being swapped... Seems like less of a job and much less hassle but ok.

The ute cab is a direct bolt on to the wagon chassis. Nothing needs to be cut or moved just unbolt lift off and bolt back on i have done this with a GQ before and now ive owned 5 gq's and it is easy only hard thing is lifting thecab unless your lucky and have the use of machinery to do it. BUT ZYOU WILL HAVE TO GET WAGON FRONT GUARDS THEY ARE SPACED DIFFERANTLY THE LEAF SPRUNG FRONT DIFF ID FURTHER TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE CHASSIS

IT IA A BOLT OFF BOLT ON JOB NO CUTTING OR MOVING THINGS

So the leafy cab doesnt need to be notched to go on a coil chassis ???

you cant legally put a GQ body onto a GU chasis, well you can but it is THE BIGGEST FUCK AROUND. need engineer reports, documentation from nissan saying it is safe to put that body on that chasis etc.

a work mate of mine has just been through this and ended up saying fuck it and turned it into a comp truck.

they did the same thing 3 years ago but DOT has since changed laws to make it hard, instead of getting the vehicles off the road they are just making it that hard so you cant get them on the road to start with.
