Ok so I wanna get 33s on my ln106 4x4 dualcab. I believe it has a 1.5-2 inch lift. Wondering what trouble I'll have with the 33s or will I need a body lift?

yes you will need a body lift to get it to flex or at least 3inch suspension lift or use a hammer on the parts that hit depends if its a pig or not

my mate done that but he was to lazy to use the hammer he just went full lock a few times. i thought it was pretty funny

Is that a serious comment...???

Op, I cant see any reason why 33's wouldn't fit on your hilux as it is.
But if they are rubbing on your guards, a 2" body lift will be your quickest, easiest and cheapest fix.

2" springs with 2" extended shackles and it'll be right

2 inch is enough but you will scrub a lot, and as said above, 2 inch body lift is your easier and cheaper option for that extra clearance

Yeah how will the body lift get it to flex exactly ?

i have standard suspension and 2 inch cab lift and they scrub.. nothing too bad but its hits the guard when flexing.

hiluxboi_chrisso
Post #9

I don't think he's saying it will make it flex, just it will let it flex without scrubbing??

ok guys ill just chuck in a 2inch body lift to be sure. is it difficult to get the bullbar to sit flush with the body? and how hard is the shifter and fuel tube extension?

2" springs with 2" shackles way easier than 2" body lift

Umm... 2inch extended shackles will only give you half that (1 inch in lift) due to shackle angles, therefore you can fit 33s ok with just an inch of lift, wich I don't doubt at all, I got sagged out 2'' springs & my 33s fit good scrub abit on full lock with abit of flex thumbsup.gif

2inch spring n move diff forward.

set it up right the first time stupid or your catch the dodgeys go 2 inch spings then shackels and leave a body to last, and put tires on,

right in fairness no body has mentioned to you about tyre width .... I have 33 11.5 bfg and with 2 inch lift they do scrub when on full lock going over a kerb ! (rear of the wheel will hit just infront of the door) there are a number of solutions all with downsides
body lift cheap initially but bumpers wont meet hoses need lengthening
move diff forward (how new springs with double mounts .... or drill original ones .... castor angles are way out of wack then and a whole heap of other bits need replacig / modding)
winch lift if you have it will be drivable but not offroad
there is one more option which also has its down side and that is tyre width ... you can get bfg 33 10.5 r 15 which will not scrub there is only one other tyre manufacturer I know off that makes this size and its yokohama meaning your buggered for spares they are always special order .... lol
so .... 2 inch spring and 2 of shakle or body are gonna be the cheapest most useable ..... well thats my thoughts as Im gettin the shakles soon enough wink.gif

Cheers guys! What if I run 32s?

philmoon
Post #18

32 are still 11.5 and it seems to be more the width that is the problem
if you drop 1 inch in tyre you only gain half an inch extra clearance on top ( the other half is below the axle) if you want to go off road look for big lift or maybe a metric tyre size tall and skinny (not sure what size it would be and once you start deviating form the norm the prices go sky high)
if you can live with them on the road 33s will fit ....
with some small probs my hilux is an 86 which came out with 29 9.5 r 15 and so my speedo is 30% out
the original rims where only a 6jj rim meaning no way could I have got these tyres on .... you need a 8j tim but preferably a 8jj (8.5 inch) wide

33 inch tyres are actually illegal on a hilux ... buggest legal tyre is a 31 10r 15 .. anyone consider this ? and as from the end of this month things are getting much harder and more stringent the entire modification scheme including lift kits, body lifts etc (general mods to cars too) is all about to change .. so yeah mite want to reconsider if its more a street than off road vehicle ...

philmoon
Post #20

hmmn for what reason are 33s illegal on hilux ?
hilux came out with a range of different size tyres the biggest being 31 ... there by whats new rules o larger than stock ?

Can anyone shed some light on the performance differences between 31s 32s and 33s go offroad?

Also this will probably open a can of worms but tyre opinions. I'm between maxis bighorns and Mtrs with Kevlar?

Sorry I'm new to the offroad scene

The difference between 31"s to 33"s is just a proportionate gain in performance as you increase tyre size.. simple really.

Regarding the bighorns and MTR's thats a chalk and cheese comparison that i can honestly say iv never seen before, bighorns being the cheap and weak, though widely owned and available mud tyre option and the kevlar MTR being at the top of the mud terrain food chain. Strong as #*^% (heavy as shit too, read wayy heavier than my spare trepadore thats on a steel wheel, and the MTR is on an alloy!) stupidly aggressive, very advanced design and great on road manners although very expensive and im pretty sure there's none in Aust right now, or may come in on the 25th of this month, very hard to get a set.

get BFG i have had 6 sets in total now and while pricey they are by far the best for lasting maximum time .... you will replace the front left on the maxis within 12 months garanteed !!! have had these and they are soft as shit (o sof i even got a 10mm bolt though the tred on the motorway one day old have pic)
the BFG are not heavier than the maxis and they are real good on road too (muds or the AT in my eyes the AT is one of the most aggresive long lasting AT on the market) the only reason to get muds is honestly if you are gonna go in lots of mud (qld the AT will do in 90% of cases )
and size wise well as most people run 33 off road if you are in some one elsestracks (up hill or mud pit ) your diff will drag along the undug terrain and you will need alot more power / speed to overcome friction ...
flip side is what size motor do you have as less than v6 and your gonna feel it with 33's as bigger wheel meas slower acceleration more top speed my speedo reads 30% out with 4 inch oversize thats not to say i can go 30% faster lol but i have 5L V8 lol so accel is mad. but when had my 22r (rebored to 2.6L ) with 31 it was fine with the mickey thompson 33' was sllllllllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwww so ..... again more choices lol

philmoon
Post #24

oops the BFG's perform as good as the maxis . actually better
ad the BFG A/t are top notch on gravel / dirt / rock (landcrusier park you would be better on A/t than muds .... unless rained lol but well some of the stuff at landcruiser in the rain would be waaaay to scary lol)

Assuming the BFGs you have owned are not the KM2s as they just haven't been around that long and theres no way you have used 6 sets of them. You cant buy the old pattern anymore AFAIK so thats not really relevant anymore as hes looking to buy new tyres, i agree that the old style KM was a very long lasting composition, ours must have around 80K+ on them with another 20 in them, but weak sidewalls and a relatively closed tread design when compared to the latest generation of muddies puts them out of contention.

nah not km2 lol good point

umm for starters The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by more than +15mm or -26mm than the largest optional manufactureres tyre and only 1.5 times wider than the largest manufacturers optional tyre ... also if it is a independant front suspension hilux you can only vary the track by a maximum of 26mm
also where they will get you is read your tyre placard and see what is the largest tyre specified there.
The tyre and rim must not foul wheel arches or suspension components under any conditions. Steering limit stops must not be adjusted
to reduce the turning circle in order to allow the fitting of the alternative rims and tyres.

hmmn I see what you are on about .....
personal opinion is maybe these tyre regs are aimed at the people running 22 inch rims on there Chev dunnidores lol (no offence intended if you have oe but holdens with chev badges suck !!)

do you know how hard it is to hold a ciggy, drink coffee and steer without powersteering lol

Wow i must have jinxed it, we blew a BFG today on the highway, time for new rubber for the 105.

Now the task of finding MTRs or KM2s... fun times.

I agree simply because they last forever! biggrin.gif My first set of 33s were a set of BFG KM2s which I was at very least the 4th owner of, they'd been on a patrol, mavrick & atleast 2 other vechiles (I bought them off a mate, who bought them off another mate, who bought them off a fella who'd bought them second hand, lol) paid $150 for the 4 on rims & while they were getting bald & I killed 2 of them with a bent tie rod on my second trip with them they were still a resonable tyre, I still have 2 of them for spares wink.gif

In saying that, after writting off my front 2 tyres I bought a set of 33x12.5r15 buckshots & have to say they've preformed ALOT better than expected for a cheap tyre, had them for nearly 12 months & they are wearing pretty well for a soft tyre & I've only been bogged once since I bought them, can tractor through most deep mud in 2wd really can't fault them thumbsup.gif
