Post #1 post 30th April 2011 - 02:14 AM
Am in the process of building an EH wagon, and am looking for anyone who has done any V8 conversion to an EH or similar (maybe HR etc)

I am looking at either a LS1 or small block chev fitment, and am trying to find what dramas people have specifically come up against with doing this to an EH really. Also, help on QLD legislation etc for what specifics are required for brake upgrades etc.

I am not too sure anyone here will be able to help me or not, and have this same post on a few other forums etc, but trying all areas to find the info before i start ripping everything out.

any help and links are appreciated.

cheers

will not be easy to get this through transport these days as they have clamped down a bit on it. pretty sure 304 cubes is the limit.

you will need disc front end, some people will use HR front end (like hensteeth because of this) some have started grafting torana gear on if I am not mistaken... somebody will be able to verify this.

I would check with QLD transport on your chances of getting this passed before committing to it.

yeah cheers. I have already fitted the HR disc front end, and was hoping that'd be enough, and wouldn't need to change it. original plan was for a blown 202, but changed my mind. will look into the details with transport dept

righto you can put a ls1 in it legaly but not a 350 also you will need a rack and pinion steering.. give rods racks a ring and he will tell you also as you already have a ball joint front you can change it to hq by using hq stub axles

now with a gen 3 its a big job to fit but it can be done the radiator has to go under the support panel and you will have to have 4 wheel disc brakes also the diff has to be a 9 inch or similar a v8 bw diff will do but 9 inch is recommended also the fuel tank has to be updated and the transmission tunnel must be changed as well as you column and theres a million other things that need to be done

now if you go a smaller chev like a 327 thats legal and you will need a sump to fit and a rack and pinion setup as well also if your body is a manual floor the transmission tunnel will have to changed to fit any style off box also to be legal the diff has to be changed also in both you will need a chassis kit

now whats your budget to have the job done??

922:EJ_PICS.jpg] At the end of the day as long as its a small block the sky is the limit. No cop or QT officer is going to do a capacity check....."Of course its a 283 Sir!!!"
Do yourself a favour rack at the back of the cross member, spend some money on decent front disks, use a corvette booster the fit is very neat, and stay away from Hadfield sub-frame kits, they are very , very agricultural.

From experience-
A few years back a mate and I built a hr with a 350. Car was a factory 3 speed floor manual. Used a 350 from a hq stato, disc front out of a hg and steering rack from a commodore. The chev headers had to be custom made and went through the guards. I remember huge hassles with the chev engine and the steering box etc... And I remember knowing that it would've been easier to run the Holden 5l. The car ran a Salisbury diff and custom shaft.
Long story short it was a pain in the ass, but was worth it. The car was sold just before completion and is now up north with a blower on it I believe.

sweet as. thanks heaps for all the input. unfortunately now my mrs just left me and fucked me over, and my big budget for the build has gone, and all i'm left with is about 7k to play with. so at this point, I am going back to the (almost) original plan of the blown 202 for now. By almost, I mean It's gonna run twin SC14's instead of one if I can get the plumbing done right. If i can get it into the budget will run it on straight gas.

I will keep all this info on board however, so i can keep my plan alive... The bitch just delayed it,she didn't kill it.

I know someone who currently has an EH with an injected 5 litre in it and is now dropping an LS1 into it. Qld transport have advised him of what to do concerning the new laws that will be coming into effect to make it all legal. He is coming round tonight to pick up my engine crane to go and pick up his LS1. PM me for his contact details if ya want..

There is a guy here in morayfield with a wb ute running twin sc14s on a 202 with a yella terra 12port head, lumpy cam and a decomp plate. Runs twin gas mixers on a twin throttle body plenum that has a Holley base, so the car runs a redline 4bbl Holley manifold. He just has one mounted off each side, and has mounted pulleys and a tensioner to run the whole show off a single serpentine belt. Thing sounds crazy.
