So my mate has broken his immobilizer button on the key, the car is a 96 camry, its the stock immobilizer, he cant use the car cos he cant get into it and even if he could he couldnt start it, he looked into it via toyota, it was going to cost over a grand to fix, so im just seeing, is there any other alternate methods to solving this problem? thanks.

what? no way...surely.

break the immobiliser plastic case open, making sure you don't harm the electric part, push button. if the button is part is broken, get a paperclip or metal pin and touch 2 contacts together. drive to toyota and pick up new immobiliser button, do the 'trick' to get the new one working and Happy Days!!

The immobilizer does not require power as it is a tuned "coil" inside the key, specific to a control box located under the dash with sends an "OK" signal to the ecu to allow the car to start.

If the standard remote central locking is broken then you can use the key to open the door and start the car
If the aftermarket remote central locking / immobilizer is broken then you are up shit creek, may have to visit autobarn for a new one & get them to tell you how to set it to the car.

When i did my 1mz engine conversion in my mr2 i had to get the immobilizer box, ignition barrel and key (all matching) and have them permenantly wired in my boot in order for the ecu to run. I did away with this when i got an aftermarket ecu but still have the bits and pieces if you need it.
