So I'm sitting here thinking about my 32, and Driftlab has made the good point that it's so much easier using it as a track car (thanks for putting that in my head Davey tongue.gif )

Anyway, I know the logical choice would be some sort of Commo/Falcon V8 or a 4WD...but I don't want any of them if I was going to have a daily tow car.

What else would that leave? I was maybe thinking a JZX100 Chaser, but I wanted opinons first.

I'd also prefer manual even though I know it's easier with an Auto.

Thoughts/suggestions?

Toyota Aristo

You are going to have to find something that has the correct towing capacity before just doing it. You may not think about it but if something does happen and you have the wrong one you will be up for a lot of money cuz insurance will not cover anything.

I've seen what can happen from a car dragging to much weight...it's nasty.

as far as tow cars go usually u cant go past landcruisers or patrols, especially in turbo diesel.

Just dont ever buy a range rover. EVER! they towing capacity is bull shit and will cost u big $$$.

I'm no Toyota expert but I don't think the Aristo or Chaser can pull 2+ tons. Don't forget a typical car trailer weighs AT LEAST 500kg, and add in the weight of tyres, fuel, tools etc, and allow some margin so you aren't pulling in the vehicles limit.

Cheers

A JZX100 Chaser only has a tow capacity of 750kg. There would be no way id be towing a trailer and vehicle with anything less than a landcruiser or patrol.
My 80 series cruiser tows a car trailer and car well, but if your towing every weekend remember all the wear on components brakes, clutch etc little jap imports are made to have 2t of trailer pushing them from behind when you brake, even with trailer brakes its still fucking heavy.

Dont just think any car will tow a car trailer and car. Make sure your tow vehicle manufacturer actually specifys that it can tow 2t+.

Oh trust me I wouldn't get any car to do it, I've seen the nasty shit that can happen without the right car so that's why I'm asking haha.

I thought the only decent cars would be a Patrol or Landcruiser, I just don't want to buy a 4WD for just towing. Because I don't want a 4WD tongue.gif

buy a cheap and nasty 80 series or patrol of the same era, cant go wrong. I wouldnt recommend towing a car trailer and car with anything other than a large 4wd.

towed cars on trailers with, VP V6supercharged (auto), XD 250xflow (manual), XD 351c (auto), EF 6cyl (auto), VS SS (manual), TE cortina 250xflow (manual)

none are 4wd, and all did a good job cept for the VS SS, it had been worked a fair bit so it lost most of its low end torque
you dont need a big gay 4wd to tow, but yes you do need the right sort of car.

anything with a good diesel engine.

just go like a hilux/triton/navara/bravo workmate, they'll be cheap and should tow it pretty easily

Just do what we did, buy a tow truck for 12 grand.

Drive on car license, diesel, and never been pulled over. And make money on side.

With good electric trailer brakes, good condition brakes on the commo and some proper fscking rear suspension youll be fine mate.

Jish, if its only a tow hack get a bunky old landcruiser, 60 or 80 series. Dont splurge on it but make the fuck sure youve either got some stiff towing springs in the back or look into polyair/firestone load assist airbags which can be had for about $400 a set for a universal fit.

A proper rated hitch is essential as well. None of this poofter towing tongue bar shit on your mums ae92 rolla for draggi g some mulch around, get some hayman reece hitch up ya.

Nothing shits me more than grey nomads cruising round with thier big caravans and stock suspension. Its just not up to the task and is flat out dangerous. Try an emergency stop and/or emergency swervi g at 90kmh with your car scraping on the back and the front pointing to the sky. The airbags are a good solution for someone who uses thier tow car as a daily as you leave them at 5 or so psi and pump them up when you put load on the rear.

Hope thats not too much.

Tl;dr - 60 or 80 series landcruiser, diesel preferably. Torque is good. Proper rear suspension. Proper hayman reece or even a treg type hitch.
