hey guys got my hand hand on a vs commo for a few hundred off a mate in mint condition. v6 ecotec.
goes good. thumbsup.gif turbo 700 (i think?)
looking to some engine work. later on after i finish my 304 build.
its a auto (i enjoy driving manuals but meh) anyways when i drive a auto, i manuly shift thrugh the gears instead of putting it in Drive and going. so im looking into a stage 2 shift kit. i dont know alot about auto's so you'll have to help me out.
now, is stage 2 involving modifying the solenoid? and or the valve body?
what has to be done?

thanks alot.
ben.

I think stage 1,2,3 and all that shit is from playing to much Need for Speed personally.

If you have a shift kit installed on your auto, you need to upgrade nearly everything at the same time so that it wont break from being smashed in and out of gear.

I got it done to my car and had the valves, bands and stally all moddified. You need to get a larger oil cooler because they get hotter once they are modded.

you can buy complete shift kits to replace all the stuff in your box.

Depends, on what shifter you want to run, I went full manualised on my T350 and the shifter was good, but I have driven others with crap shifters and its gets annoying... but I think the difference between 2 & 3 is not much... its 2 auto with a manual shift option or 3 with the fully manual shift option no auto changes...

^^^good advice from garfield. One thing i would add is to make sure you get billet servos put in rather than corvette servos. The billets are stronger and lighter and have been proven to perform better.

No, Stage 1,2,3 does not come from CPU Games... It comes from auto trans reconditioners.

To Break it down and make it simple:

Stage 1 = Smoother/quicker shifting with greater line pressure
Stage 2 = Modified valve body (usually fully manualised) increased line pressure, new bands/clutches
Stage 3 = Doesn't so much "shift" more like "bangs" into gear, really only for track use

they did a corvette servo, custom made stage 2 shift kit with re-tensioned springs, kevlar band, 3-4 Zpack new AC Delco converter,
for $1800
the shop is called BOXSTOP AUTOMATICS 38082633 talk 2 chris

cheers man, but I've had a box built already..

got custom sun gear, hardened Nissan Patrol planetary and ring gears, kev bands, custom 3g stally and valve body, remote oil cooler... full shift kit

i never asked for any particular stage though, just to have a manual shift kit

It will vary slightly from shop to shop but everytime I have enquired (3 times, went for the next stage each time) they have all know what I was on about. Originally they were the ones that used the "stage lingo" to simplify what work was being done to the box.

I couldn't get a sun gear for the planetary gears that would fit the shaft inside the box so I had to have one machined to fit. Nothing to exciting really, just made the price a bit steeper

there are no parts readily available to make the box so they had to make a few bits to suit.

true shit! give ya credit there my apologies i thought the word CUSTOM was gettin thrown around wildly like it normally is. wat type of car mate?

mechanic-man
Post #16

ok did some more research:

Stage 1: is a transmodule, later shifts basicly.
Stage 2: solenoid, bands, valve body, servo few others, can manuly shift, kicks harder into gear.
Stage 3: fully manulised, no auto shifts.

looking into some kits by a company called TransGo.
i think the T700 is called a 4L60E in the states. anyone used transgo before?

LOWGM
Post #17

shop that done mine advised away from it, very pricey and can get same results from other mods for cheaper. yeah mate 4l60e

sorry... a remote oil cooler is seperate from the box, mounted in a "remote" part of the car comparitivly... a front mounted oil cooler for the transmission

They 4L60E is the electronic version found in VR onwards, before that (VN-VP) is the 4L60, have also seen it called a 700R4.

I have a Transgo stage 2/3 reprogramming kit for a 4L60 on ebay atm with corvette servos and a 1/2 inch boost valve if anyones interested... It's a great kit, comes with new springs, valves, and even a clutch spring pack..

so thats they've been marketed like that since the 60's or whatever? Never realised Trans-go did a need for speed based shift kit back in the 70's for my HQ.

yeah well the whole stage thing get thrown about a bit willy nilly as well around here with your stage 3 shift kits and stage 2 turbo kits and stage 4 Nos kits...

I see now that this does apply to transmission now.. but still

summoner
Post #22

agreed it does get thrown around a fair bit

stage 1 - firmer shifts
stage 2 - more manual shifting and holds gear selected but can also be left in D with firmer shifts
stage 3 - complete manual shifting

Ok, spoke to a trans builder today. RVO automatics.
he was very helpful and gave me alot of advice etc etc.
he said deffently a 3,000 converter. and all there servo's, solenoids etc are all manufactured by them. i told him what i'd like it to do and he said to easy. no issuse. he said stock engine it can churp/wheel spin into 2nd. alot better with mods.

so all that for $2,000.

now, is the v6 TH700 the same as the v8 5.0L TH700? <-both vs commo.
if they are the same, can they be swapped?

because im building a quick N/A streeter 304 stroker. now, if the gearboxes can be changed i will get the v6 box built then swap it over to the 304 when its finished (want to put it into a vs ss or even clubsport) and put the stock v8 box behind the v6 and sell it. but if they cant be swapped, i will build the v6 one myself and buy a v8 box and take it to be built.

thoughts..?

ok the trans bolt patterns are different.
so i've got my hands on a stage 2 B&M shift kit. so that will be put in soon.

is there some aftermarket shifters for the vs commo's? other than those B&M ones? something that dosent stand out so much. just its jumps gears when u shift manuly and yeah, pain in the ass.
any one modded there's? pics would be great.

what do you mean by that? is it missing a gear like 1st to 3rd? If thats the case and you've had your shift kit installed it's been done wrong somehow. You should be able to just use your normal gear stick if you want it to not stand out. Unless you want the ratchet shift?

just thought id quote this from the justcommodore forums, might be handy for those who havnt read it.

dunno how accurate it is, but ive been researching alot about shift kkits lately and it seems pretty spot on

QUOTE
Automatic Transmission:

Shift Kit:

An Automatic Transmission Shift Kit is a modified valve body that is housed inside the transmission of your Commodore. The shift kit is a hydraulic product that improves your shifting by making the transmission shift much harder and quicker, therefore improving the performance of your car.
There are many different automatic transmission shift kits available on the market. Automatic transmission shift kits are normally separated into stages. Listed below is a list of the different available shift kits and what they include/involve.

Stage 0.5 Shift Kit:
What it involves - A Stage 0.5 shift kit involves a pressure control modification and the installation of a resistor in the path of the signal of the pressure control switch.
Price - $100 to $150 fully installed

Stage 1 Shift Kit:
What it involves – A Stage 1 Shift Kit involves an adjustment in the line pressure and the installation of a boost valve.
Price - $150 to $250 fully installed

Stage 1.5 Shift Kit:
What it involves – A Stage 1.5 Shift Kit involves the installation of a boost valve and boost valve spring, the installation of a drilled valve body plate, the installation of a line pressure spring and accumulator spring upgrades.
Price - $250 to $350 fully installed

Stage 2 Shift Kit:
What it involves – A Stage 2 Shift Kit involves the installation of a new boost valve and boost valve spring, the installation of a new drilled valve body plate, the installation of a new line pressure spring, the installation of new accumulator springs, the installation of a new 1-2 Shift valve, the installation of a new actuator valve spring, the installation of a new cut back valve spring, and many more small modifications to help improve performance of the transmission.
Price - $400 to $700 fully installed

Performance Shift Module:

What does it do - A performance shift module is a module which connects to your cars transmission control module and changes the way that your transmission shifts between gears. There are two different types of performance shift modules available on the market for VR and VS commodores; they are single and two stage modules. A single stage module is controlled by a switch in the cars cabin, when this switch is engaged; the transmission shifts are firmer than when the switch is disengaged. A two stage module much like a single stage module is controlled by a switch in the cabin, however a two stage module has two different firmness settings. The firmness of the shifts in the single and two stage modules are adjustable and can be adjusted to suit your driving style or needs and when the switch is disengaged, the transmission shifts as if the module was never installed.

How does it work – The performance shift module alters the signal that the transmission control unit sends to the transmission to control the transmission line pressure, therefore altering the line pressure. By increasing your transmission line pressure, the transmission shifts harder between gears, reducing the heat generated from the clutches and bands in the transmission and increasing transmission lift. As well as reducing heat in the transmission and increasing transmission lift, the shift module reduces transmission wear.

Performance Shift Module

Average Prices for Performance Shift Modules:

Single Stage Performance Shift Module:
Price – Approximately $80

Two Stage Performance Shift Module:
Price – Approximately $120

thanks for that ragrim.

nah the kit isnt in it yet, but when i shift manualy (i dont chnage gears hard i.e hit the shifter) but it will sometimes skip from 1st to 3rd and i've just tapped it to go into 2nd.
i was thinking of extending the shifter height. i also want to change the trigger on the shifter (that shits me lol) just wondering if anyone has done it?
