HI guys

Im considering buying an old 74 land rover troop carrier and was wondering if ne one knew the laws about haing ppl riding in the back?

Im sure the army troop carriers dont have seat belts and i was wondering if i need to install them or if i just cant have passengers in there?

You will need proper restraints for any passengers you carry or else you and the passengers with no seatbelts will be fined, and in the event you're in an accident it will be messy.

If the passengers are under 18, the driver will be fined as well smile.gif

A lot off the older troop cariers didn't have seat belts fitted to the rear and were plated to carry upto 11,rule of thumb if it wasn't fitted when produced you dont need them. But if at some stage someone had fitted seat belts you can't remove them.

i have an old troopie rover. i think the rule is what 69stang said, if it wasnt originally fitted you dont need them. however if you are a p plater you need seatbelts for you and your passengers

You'll also find that the Army no longer transports troops in vehicles without seatbelts whilst on the road. Eg Land Rover - Mogs - Macks, beacuse its too dangerous.

It all boils down to this.

It was not fitted with them, So you DO NOT LEGALLY need to FIT (and make that word very clear) to the car.

But, As stated, If you are on your P's Both you and your passengers NEED seatbelts on.

So, If you were by yourself, And they tried to fine you for not having seatbelts in the back, You would win in court.

But, if you were carring passengers on a public road without seatbelts, Both you and your passengers would be fined.

And obviously, No matter where you are, If you have 7 or 8 people mucking about in the back being silly while driving, Your going to become popular by the police for the wrong reasons.

damn staight kids and school holidays sheesh

old cars are allowed to have what they had from factory
so if they came without everse lights or with amber ones etc its allowed
same goes with seat belts etc

Under 16 actually wink.gif

Passengers 16 and over are liable for the fine if they don't wear their seatbelt.

But the question's already been answered..
