(a) Brake System Warning Light This light comes on in the following cases when the ignition key is in the “ON” posi- tion. (cid:1) When the parking brake is applied... (cid:1) When the brake fluid level is low...

CAUTION

It is dangerous to continue driving normally when the brake fluid level is low.

Have your vehicle checked at your Toyota dealer in the following cases: The light does not come on even if the parking brake is applied when the ignition key is in the “ON” position.

CAUTION

If the light does not turn off even after the parking brake is released while the engine is running, immedi- ately stop your vehicle at a safe place and contact your Toyota dealer. In this case, the brakes may not work properly and your stopping distance will become longer. Depress the brake pedal firmly and bring the vehicle to an immediate stop.

Once the ignition key is turned to “ON” or “START”, the reminder light comes on if a passenger sits in the front passenger seat and does not fasten the seat belt. Unless the belt, the light stays on. If front passenger seat, depending on its weight and how it is placed on the seat, built–in sensors in the seat cushion may detect the pressure, causing the reminder light to come on. (d) Discharge Warning Light This light warns that the battery is being discharged. If it comes on while you are driving, there is a problem somewhere in the charging system. The engine ignition will continue to oper- the battery ate, however, until is dis- charged. Turn off the air conditioning, blower, radio, etc., and drive directly to the nearest Toyota dealer or repair shop.

NOTICE

This light reminds you to buckle up the front passenger’s seat belt.

(e) Malfunction Indicator Lamp This lamp comes on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position and goes off after the engine starts. This means that the warning light system is operating properly. If the lamp remains on, first check the followings. (cid:1) Empty fuel tank

If the fuel tank is empty, refuel immedi- ately.

(cid:1) Loose fuel tank cap

If the fuel tank cap is loose, securely tighten it.

These cases are temporary malfunctions. The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after taking several driving trips. If the lamp will not go off even after the several trips...

If the fuel tank is not empty or the fuel tank cap is not loose... (cid:1) There is a problem somewhere in the engine, emission control system, auto- matic transmission electrical system or warning light system itself.

Contact your Toyota dealer as soon as possible to service the vehicle. 90

Emissions Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) programs Your vehicle may not pass a state emis- sion inspection if the malfunction indicator lamp remains on. Contact your Toyota dealer to check your vehicle’s emission control system and OBD (On–Board Diag- nostics) system before taking your vehicle for the inspection. For details, see “Emissions inspection and maintenance (I/M) programs” in Section 6. (f) Low Fuel Level Warning Light This light comes on when the fuel level in the tank becomes nearly empty. Fill up the tank as soon as possible. On inclines or curves, due to the move- ment of fuel in the tank, the low fuel level warning light may come on earlier than usual. (g) Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning

This light warns that the engine oil pres- sure is too low. If it flickers or stays on while you are driving, pull off the road to a safe place and stop the engine immediately. Call a Toyota dealer or qualified repair shop for assistance.

This means the system of the air- bags and front seat belt pretensioners are operating properly. The light operates to warn that the engine is almost overheating. The light will come on when the ignition key is turned to the “ON” position. After a few seconds, the light will go off. If it flashes while you are driving, stop the vehicle and check your engine. For de- tailed instructions, see “If your vehicle overheats” in Section 4.

Continued driving with the light on could result in engine overheating.

(m) Key Reminder Buzzer This buzzer reminds you to remove the key when you open the driver’s door with the ignition key in the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.

“START”—Starter motor on. The key will return to the “ON” position when released. For starting tips, see Section 3. “ON”—Engine on and all accessories on. This is the normal driving position. “ACC”—Accessories such as the radio operate, but the engine is off. the “ACC” or If you “LOCK” position and open the driver’s door, a buzzer will remind you to remove the key.

“LOCK”—Engine is off and the steering wheel is locked. The key can be re- moved only at this position. You must push in the key to turn the key from “ACC” to the “LOCK” position. On vehicles with an automatic transmission, the selector lever must be put in the “P” position before pushing the key. When starting the engine, the key may seem stuck at the “LOCK” position. To free it, first be sure the key is pushed all the way in, and then rock the steering wheel slightly while turning the key gently.

CAUTION

For manual transmission: Never remove the key when the ve- hicle is moving, as this will lock the steering wheel and result in loss of steering control.

NOTICE

Do not leave the key in the “ON” position if the engine is not running. The battery will discharge and the ignition could be damaged.

(b) Overdrive switch You can select either third gear(with over- drive off) or forth gear (with overdrive on) by pushing this switch. To turn the overdrive off, push the switch. The “O/D OFF” indicator light should come on. To turn the overdrive again, push the switch again. The “O/D OFF” indicator light should go off. Always drive your vehicle with the over- drive on fuel economy and quieter driving. If the engine is turned off when the over- drive is off and restarted, the overdrive will automatically be on.

(e) Using “2” and “L” positions The “2” and “L” positions are used for strong engine braking as described pre- viously. With the selector lever in “2” or “L”, you can start the vehicle in motion as with the lever in “D”. With the selector lever in “2”, the vehicle will start in first gear and automatically shift to second gear. With the selector lever in “L”, the trans- mission is engaged in first gear.

NOTICE

Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake to hold the vehicle on an upgrade. Do not attempt to hold the vehicle using the accelerator ped- al, as this can cause the transmission to overheat.

Downshift to the appropriate gear if accel- eration is needed when you are cruising below the above downshifting speeds. Upshifting too too soon or downshifting late will cause lugging, and possibly ping- ing. Regularly revving the engine to maxi- mum speed in each gear will cause ex- cessive engine wear and high fuel consumption. To release: Pull up the lever slightly (1), press the thumb button (2), and lower (3). Using your audio system— —Some basics This section describes some of the basic features on Toyota audio systems. Some information may not pertain to your sys- tem. Your audio system works when the ignition key is in the “ACC” or “ON” position. TURNING THE SYSTEM ON AND OFF Push “PWR/VOL” or “PWR·VOL” to turn the audio system on and off. Push “AM”, “FM1·2”, “FM”, “FM1”, “FM2”, “TAPE”, “DISC”, “LOAD” or “AUX” to turn on function without pushing “PWR/ VOL” or “PWR·VOL”. To turn on the cas- sette or compact disc player, a cassette or compact disc must be loaded in the player. You can turn on each player by inserting a cassette tape or compact disc. You can turn off each player by ejecting the cassette tape or compact disc. YOUR RADIO ANTENNA To lower a manual antenna, carefully push it down.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the antenna, make sure it is retracted before driv- ing your Toyota through an automatic car wash.

YOUR CASSETTE PLAYER When you insert a cassette, the exposed tape should face to the right.

NOTICE

Do not oil any part of the player and do not insert anything other than cas- sette tapes into the slot, or the tape player may be damaged.

YOUR COMPACT DISC PLAYER When you insert a disc, gently push it in with the label side up. (The player will automatically eject a disc if the label side is down.) The player will play from track 1 through the end of the disc. Then it will play from track 1 again.

NOTICE

Never try to disassemble or oil any part of the compact disc player. Do not insert anything other than com- pact discs into the slot.

The player is intended for use with 12 cm (4.7 in.) discs only.

Tone How good an audio program sounds to you is largely determined by the mix of the treble, midrange, and bass levels. In fact, different kinds of music and vocal programs usually sound better with differ- ent mixes of treble, midrange and bass. Balance A good balance of the left and right stereo channels and of the front and rear sound levels is also important. Keep in mind that if you are listening to a stereo recording or broadcast, changing the right/left balance will increase the vol- ume of one group of sounds while de- creasing the volume of another.

RADIO RECEPTION Usually, a problem with radio reception does not mean there is a problem with your radio—it is just the normal result of conditions outside the vehicle. For example, nearby buildings and terrain can interfere with FM reception. Power lines or telephone wires can interfere with AM signals. And of course, radio signals have a limited range, and the farther you are from a station, the weaker its signal will be. In addition, reception conditions change constantly as your vehicle moves.

Here are some common reception prob- lems that probably do not indicate a prob- lem with your radio: FM Fading and drifting stations—Generally, the effective range of FM is about 40 km (25
miles). Once outside this range, you may notice fading and drifting, which increase with the distance from the radio transmit- ter. They are often accompanied by distor- tion. Multi–path—FM reflective, making it possible for two signals to reach your antenna at the same time. If this happens, the signals will cancel each oth- er out, causing a momentary flutter or loss of reception.
