2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 17 ECHO_U Hood SU12016 SU12017 SU12018 2. In front of the vehicle, pull up the the lever and lift auxiliary catch hood. To open the hood: 1. Pull the hood lock release lever. The hood will spring up slightly. CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the hood is closed and securely locked. Other- wise, the hood may open unexpected- ly while driving and an accident may occur. 3. Hold the hood open by inserting the support rod into the slot. Before closing the hood, check to see that you have not forgotten any tools, rags, etc. and return the support rod to its clip- this prevents rattles. Then lower the hood make sure it locks into place. If neces- sary, press down gently on the front edge to lock it. CAUTION After inserting the support rod into the slot, make sure the rod supports the hood security from falling down on to your head or body. 18 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) ECHO_U Theft deterrent system SU12028 SU12020 To deter the vehicle theft, the system is designed to give an alarm if any of the doors, trunk or hood is forcibly un- locked or the battery terminal is discon- nected and then reconnected when the vehicle is locked. The alarm blows the horn intermittently and flashes the headlights and tail lights. SETTING THE SYSTEM 1. Turn the ignition key position and remove it. to the “LOCK” The indicator light will start flashing every 1 second when the key is removed from the ignition switch. 2. Have all passengers get out of the vehicle. 3. Close and lock all the doors, trunk and hood. The indicator light will come on when all the doors, trunk and hood are closed and locked. The system will automatically be set after 30 seconds. When the system is set, the indicator light will start flashing again. 4. After making sure light starts flashing, you may leave the ve- hicle. indicator the Never leave anyone in the vehicle when you set the system, because unlocking from the inside will activate the system. WHEN THE SYSTEM IS SET Activating the system The system will give the alarm under the following conditions: (cid:1) If any of the doors is unlocked or if the trunk or hood is forcibly opened without the key (cid:1) If the battery terminal is disconnected and then reconnected The indicator light will come on when the system is activating. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 19 ECHO_U If any of the doors are unlocked without the key and the key is not in the ignition switch, all the doors will be automatically locked again. After one minute, the alarm will automati- cally stop and the indicator light will starts flashing again. Reactivating the alarm Once set, the system automatically resets the alarm after the alarm stops. The alarm will activate again under the circumstances same in “Activating the system”. Stopping the alarm The alarm will be stopped by the following three ways: (cid:1) Turn the ignition key from the “LOCK” described to “ON” position. (cid:1) Unlock any of the doors with the key. (cid:1) Open the trunk with the key. the CANCELLING THE SYSTEM The system will be cancelled by above mentioned 3 ways. To remove the fuel tank cap, turn the cap slowly counterclockwise, then pause slightly before removing it. Front seats— —Seat adjustment precautions Adjust the driver’s seat so that the foot pedals, steering wheel and instrument panel controls are within easy reach of the driver. CAUTION CAUTION (cid:1) Do not drive the vehicle unless the occupants are properly seated. Do top of a not allow sitting on folded- down seatback, or the luggage compartment. (cid:1) After adjusting the seat position, try sliding it forward and backward to make sure it is locked in posi- tion. (cid:1) After adjusting the seatback, exert body pressure to make sure it is locked in position. 24 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) (cid:1) Do not put objects under the seats except putting in the auxiliary box. The objects may interfere with the seat- lock mechanism or unexpect- edly push up the seat position ad- justing lever; the seat may suddenly move, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. (cid:1) While adjusting the seat, do not put your hands under the seat or near the moving parts. You may catch and injure your hands or fingers. —Adjusting front seats SU13001 ECHO_U 1. SEAT POSITION ADJUSTING LEVER Pull the lever up. Then slide the seat to the desired position with slight body pressure and release the lever. 2. CAUTION To reduce the risk of sliding under the lap belt during a collision, avoid reclining the seatback any more than needed. The seat belts provide maxi- mum protection in a frontal or rear collision when the driver and the pas- senger are sitting up straight and well back If you are reclined, the lap belt may slide past your hips and apply restraint forces directly to the abdomen. Therefore, in the event of a frontal collision, the risk of personal injury may increase with increasing recline of the seat- back. in the seats. —Moving passenger’s seat for rear seat entry (2- door models) SY13002b For easy access to the rear seat, do this. 1. Lift the seatback angle adjusting lever the seat- the pedal behind or press back. The seat will slide forward. 2. Move the seat to the front- most posi- tion. After passengers are in, lift up the seat- back and return the seat until it locks. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 25 ECHO_U Fold- down rear seat CAUTION (cid:1) After putting back try pushing the seat forward and rear- ward to make sure it is secured in place. the seat, (cid:1) Never allow anyone to rest their foot on the release pedal while the vehicle is moving. SU13003 SU13004 (A) FOLDING DOWN REAR SEAT 1. Pull up the seatback security lock lever 1 to the unlock position. 2. Pull up the lock release button 2. 3. Fold down the seatback. Each seatback may be folded separately. This will enlarge the trunk as far as the seatbacks. See ”Luggage stowage precau- tions” in Section 2 for precautions to ob- serve for loading luggage. NOTICE Make sure the luggage loaded in the enlarged trunk will not damage the webbing of the rear center seat belt when the left seatback is folded down. 26 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) ECHO_U CAUTION When returning the seatback to the upright position: (cid:1) Make sure the seat belts are not twisted or caught in the seatback and are arranged the proper position and are ready to use. in (cid:1) Make sure the seatback is securely locked by pushing forward and rear- ward on the top of the seatback. Failure to do so will prevent seat belt from operating properly. CAUTION Disconnect the rear center seat belt only under the above mentioned cir- cumstances; do not disconnect it in other circumstances. SU13005 (B) PREVENTING DAMAGE TO REAR CENTER SEAT BELT WEBBING in loaded luggage When folding down the left seatback, if the the enlarged trunk will damage the webbing of the rear center seat belt, disconnect the rear center seat belt to prevent damage. Insert the key into the hole (light gray) on the buckle to release tab 1 (light gray), and allow the belt to retract. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 27 ECHO_U SU13006 (C) BEFORE RETURNING REAR SEAT Before returning the seatback to the upright position, make sure to correctly connect the center seat belt for ready use. Insert tab 1 (light gray) into the buckle with light gray buckle- release button. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. CAUTION (cid:1) Be careful not to mix up the proper match of tab and buckle. Do not insert tab 1 (light gray) into other buckle than the one with light gray buckle release button. (See ”Seat belts” in this Section for proper matching of the buckles and tabs.) (cid:1) After inserting the tab, make sure the tab and buckle are locked. (cid:1) Do not insert coins, clips, etc. in the buckle as this may prevent you from properly latching the tab and buckle. (cid:1) Make sure the belt is not twisted or caught in the seatback and that it is arranged in the proper position for ready use. (cid:1) If the seat belt does not function normally, immediately contact your Toyota dealer. 28 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) Head restraints SY13011 Front seat SU13007 Rear seat For your safety and comfort, adjust the head restraint before driving. To raise: Pull it up. To lower: Push it down while pressing the lock release button. The head restraint is most effective when it is close to your head. Therefore, using a cushion on the seatback is not recom- mended. CAUTION (cid:1) Adjust the center of the head re- straint so that it is closest to the top of your ears. (cid:1) After adjusting the head restraint, make sure it is locked in position. the head re- (cid:1) Do not drive with straints removed. ECHO_U Seat belts— —Seat belt precautions Toyota strongly urges that the driver and passengers in the vehicle be properly re- strained at all times with the seat belts provided. Failure to do so could increase the chance of injury and/or the severity of injury in accidents. Child. Use a child restraint system ap- propriate for the child until the child be- comes large enough to properly wear the vehicle’s seat belts. See ”Child restraint” for details. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. If a child must sit in the front seat, the seat belts should be worn properly. If an accident occurs and the seat belts are not worn properly, the force of the rapid infla- tion of the airbag may cause death or serious injury to the child. Do not allow the child to stand up or kneel on either rear or front seats. An unrestrained child could suffer serious in- jury or death during emergency braking or a collision. Also, do not let the child sit on your lap. It does not provide sufficient restraint. Pregnant woman. Toyota recommends the use of a seat belt. The entire assembly should be replaced even if damage is not obvious. —Front and rear seat belts SY13014a Adjust the seat as needed (front seats only) and sit up straight and well back in the seat. To fasten your belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the tab into the buckle. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. The seat belt length automatically adjusts to your size and the seat position. The retractor will lock the belt during a sudden stop or on impact. It also may lock if you lean forward too quickly. A slow, easy motion will allow the belt to extend, and you can move around freely. (cid:1) Use the belt for only one person at a time. Do not use a single belt for two or more people—even children. (cid:1) Avoid reclining the seatbacks too much. The seat belts provide maxi- mum protection when the seatbacks are in the upright position. (Refer to the seat adjustment instructions.) (cid:1) Be careful not to damage the belt webbing or hardware. Take care that they do not get caught or pinched in the seat or doors. (cid:1) Inspect the belt system periodically. Check for cuts, fraying, and loose parts. Damaged parts should be re- placed. Do not disassemble or modify the system. (cid:1) Keep the belts clean and dry. If they need cleaning, use a mild soap solution or lukewarm water. Never use bleach, dye, or abrasive clean- ers—they may severely weaken the belts. (See ”Cleaning the interior” in Section 5.) 30 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) ECHO_U SY13015 Seat belts with an adjustable shoulder anchor— Adjust the shoulder anchor position to your size. To raise: Slide the anchor up. To lower: Push in the lock release button and slide the anchor down. After adjustment make sure the anchor is locked in position. CAUTION Always make sure the shoulder belt is positioned across the center of your shoulder. The belt should be kept away from your neck, but not falling off your shoulder. Failure to do so could reduce the amount of protection in an accident and cause serious injures in a collision. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 31 If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. You will then be able to smoothly pull the belt out of the retractor. When a passenger’s shoulder belt is com- pletely extended and retracted even slightly, the belt is locked in that position and cannot be extended. This fea- ture is used to hold the child restraint system securely. (For details, see ”Child restraint” in this Section.) To free the belt again, fully retract the belt and then pull the belt out once more. then is CAUTION (cid:1) After inserting the tab, make sure the tab and buckle are locked and that the belt is not twisted. (cid:1) Do not insert coins, clips, etc. in the buckle as this may prevent you from properly latching the tab and buckle. (cid:1) If the seat belt does not function normally, immediately contact your Toyota dealer. Do not use the seat until the seat belt is fixed. It cannot protect an adult occupant or your child from injury. ECHO_U CAUTION Take up slack Too high SY13016 lap (cid:1) High- positioned belts and loose- fitting belts both could in- crease the chance of injury due to sliding under the lap belt during an accident or other unintended result. Keep the lap belt as low on your hips as possible. Keep as low on hips as possible (cid:1) For your safety, do not place the shoulder belt under your arm. the lap and the position of Adjust shoulder belts. If the belt does not retract smoothly, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it re- tracts. The buckle 1 should be separated only when folded down, if the luggage loaded in the en- larged trunk will damage the webbing of the rear center seat belt. ECHO_U from your Toyota dealer —Seat belt extender If your seat belt cannot be fastened se- curely because it is not long enough, a personalized seat belt extender is avail- able free of charge. Please contact your local Toyota dealer so that the dealer can order the proper re- quired length for the extender. Bring the heaviest coat you expect to wear for prop- er measurement and selection of length. Additional ordering information is available at your Toyota dealer. CAUTION When using the seat belt extender, observe the following. Failure to fol- low these instructions could result in less effectiveness of the seat belt re- straint system in case of vehicle acci- dent, increasing the chance of per- sonal injury. (cid:1) Never use the seat belt extender if you can fasten the seat belt without it. SU13014 CAUTION Do not use the rear center seat belt with either buckle released. Fastening only the shoulder belt or lap belt may cause severe personal injury in case of sudden braking or a collision. 34 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) ECHO_U CAUTION (cid:1) After inserting the tab, make sure the tab and buckle are locked and that the seat belt extender is not twisted. (cid:1) Do not insert coins, clips, etc. in the buckle as this may prevent you from properly latching the tab and buckle. (cid:1) If the seat belt does not function normally, immediately contact your Toyota dealer. —Front seat belt pretensioners SY13021a The driver and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioners are designed to be activated in response to a severe fron- tal impact. When the airbag sensor detects the shock of a severe frontal impact, the front seat belt is quickly drawn back in by the re- tractor so that the belt snugly restrains the front seat occupants. The seat belt pretensioners are activated even with no passenger in the front seat. Collosions occurring at certain speeds and angles may cause the seat belt preten- sioners and SRS airbags not to operate all together. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 35 SU13015 To connect the extender to the seat belt, insert the tab into the seat belt buckle so that the ”PRESS” signs on the buckle- release buttons of the ex- tender and the seat belt are both facing outward as shown. You will hear a click when the tab locks into the buckle. When releasing the seat belt, press on the buckle- release button on the extender, not on the seat belt. This helps prevent damage to the vehicle interior and extend- er itself. This gas is harmless and does not indicate that a fire is occur- ring. Once the seat belt pretensioner has been activated, the seat belt retractor remains locked. CAUTION Do not modify, remove, strike or open the front seat belt pretensioner as- semblies, airbag sensor or surround- ing area or wiring. Doing any of these may cause sudden operation of the front seat belt pretensioners or disable the system, which could re- sult in serious injury. (cid:1) Installation of electronic items such as a mobile two-way radio, cassette tape player or compact disc player (cid:1) Repairs on or near the front seat belt retractor assemblies (cid:1) Modification of the suspension sys- tem (cid:1) Modification of the front end struc- ture (cid:1) Attachment of a grille guard (bull bar, kangaroo bar, etc.), snowplow, winches or any other equipment to the front end (cid:1) Repairs made on or near the front fenders, front end structure or con- sole (cid:1) If either front seat belt does not retract or can not be pulled out due to a malfunction or activation of the preten- sioner. (cid:1) The front seat belt pretensioner assem- bly or surrounding area has been dam- aged. (cid:1) The front part of the vehicle (shaded in the illustration) was involved in an accident that did not cause the seat belt pretensioners to operate. (cid:1) The front seat belt pretensioner assem- bly is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged. (cid:1) The light comes on or flashes while driving. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 37 ECHO_U CAUTION A driver or front passenger too close to the steering wheel or dashboard during airbag deployment can be killed or seriously injured. Toyota strongly recommends that: (cid:1) The driver sit as far back as pos- sible from the steering wheel while still maintaining control of the ve- hicle. (cid:1) The front passenger sit as far back as possible from the dashboard. (cid:1) All vehicle occupants be properly restrained using the available seat belts. SRS driver and front passenger airbags SY13024 The SRS (Supplemental Restraint Sys- tem) airbags are designed to provide further protection for the driver and front passenger when added to the pri- mary protection provided by the seat belts. In response to a severe frontal impact, the SRS airbags work together with the seat belts to help prevent or reduce injury by inflating, in order to decrease the likeli- hood of the driver’s or front passenger’s head or chest directly hitting the steering wheel or dashboard. The passenger airbag is activated even with no passenger in the front seat. Be sure to wear your seat belt. 38 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) SU13017 This indicator comes on when the igni- tion key is turned to the ”ON” position. It goes off after about 6 seconds. SU13022 Collision from the rear Collision from the side Vehicle rollover The SRS airbags are not designed to inflate if the vehicle is subjected to a side or rear impact, if it rolls over, or if it is involved in a low- speed frontal collision. 2000 ECHO (OM52411U) 39 SU13021 The SRS airbag system is designed to activate in response to a severe frontal impact within the shaded area between the arrows in the illustration. There may be the case that the SRS air- bags will not activate with such an impact in which the occupant wearing the seat belt correctly would not get serious injury. The SRS airbags will deploy if the severi- ty of the impact is above the designed threshold level, comparable to an approxi- mate 25 km/h (15 mph) collision when impacting straight into a fixed barrier that does not move or deform. If the severity of the impact is below the above threshold the SRS airbags may not deploy. level, Hitting a curb, edge of pavement or hard material Falling into or jumping over a deep hole SU13023 Landing hard or vehicle falling The SRS airbags may deploy if a seri- ous impact occurs to the underside of your vehicle. Some examples are shown in the illustration. ECHO_U In a severe frontal impact, sensors detect deceleration and the system triggers the airbag inflators. Then a chemical reaction in the inflators momentarily fills the air- bags with non- toxic gas to help restrain the forward motion of the occupants. When the airbags inflate, they produce a fairly loud noise and release some smoke and residue along with non- toxic gas. This does not indicate a fire. This gas is nor- mally harmless, however, for those who have delicate skin, it may cause minor skin irritation. Be sure to wash off any residue as soon as possible to prevent minor skin irritation. Deployment of the airbags happens in a fraction of a second, so the airbags must inflate with considerable force. While the system is designed to reduce serious inju- ries, it may also cause minor burns or abrasions and swellings. Parts of the airbag module (steering wheel hub, dashboard) may be hot for several minutes, but the airbags themselves will not be hot. The airbags are designed to inflate only once. SU13024 The SRS airbag system mainly consists of the following components and their loca- tions are shown in the illustration. 1. SRS warning light 2. Airbag module for driver (airbag and inflator) 3. Airbag module for passenger (airbag and inflator) 4. Airbag sensor assembly 5. ECHO_U CAUTION (cid:1) The SRS airbag system is designed only as a supplement to the prima- ry protection of the driver side and front passenger side seat belt sys- tems. The front seat occupants can be killed or seriously injured by an inflating airbag if they do not wear the available seat belts. During sud- den braking just before a collision, an unrestrained driver or front pas- senger can move forward into direct contact with or close proximity to the airbag which may then deploy during the collision. To obtain maxi- mum protection in an accident, the driver and all passengers in the ve- hicle must wear their seat belts. Wearing a seat belt during an acci- dent reduces the chances of death or serious injuries or being thrown out of the vehicle. For instructions and precautions concerning the seat belt system, see ”Seat belts” in this Section. (cid:1) Improperly seated and/or restrained infants and children can be killed or seriously injured by a deploying airbag. An infant or child who is too small to use a seat belt should be properly secured using a child restraint system. The laws of all fifty states in the U.S.A. and Canada now require the use of a child restraint system. Your vehicle conforms to SAE J1819. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, the child should sit in the rear seat and must be restrained using the vehicle’s seat belt. See ”Seat belts” for details. CAUTION (cid:1) For effective protection in automo- bile accidents and sudden stops, children must be properly re- strained using a seat belt or child restraint system depending on the age and size of the child. Holding a child in your arms is not a sub- stitute for a child restraint system. In an accident, the child can be crushed against the windshield, or between you and the vehicle’s inte- rior. (cid:1) Toyota strongly urges use of a proper child restraint system which conforms to the size of the child, and is put on the rear seat. To provide proper restraint, use a child restraint system following the manufactur- er’s instructions about the appropriate age and size of the child for the child restraint system. Install the child restraint system correctly following the instructions provided by its manufacturer of the system. The child restraint system should be installed on the rear seat. Be careful when judging the size or dis- tance of any object seen in the outside rear view mirror on the passenger’s side. It is a convex mirror with a curved sur- face. Any object seen in a convex mirror will look smaller and farther away than when seen in a flat mirror. CAUTION (cid:1) Do not adjust the steering wheel while the vehicle is moving. NOTICE If ice should jam the mirror, do not operate the control or scrape the mir- ror face. Use a spray de-icer to free the mirror. Adjust the mirror so you can just see the rear of your vehicle in the mirror. To reduce glare from the headlights of the vehicle behind you during night driving, operate the lever on the lower edge of the mirror.
