When you go to your Saturn retailer for your service needs, you will know that Saturn-trained and supported service technicians will perform the work using genuine Saturn parts. If you want to get service information, see Service Publications Ordering Information on page 7-9. Owner Checks and Services on page 6-10 tells you what should be checked, when to check it and what you can easily do to help keep your vehicle in good condition. The proper replacement parts, ﬂuids and lubricants to use are listed in Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-14 and Normal Maintenance Replacement Parts on page 6-16. When your vehicle is serviced, make sure these are used. All parts should be replaced and all necessary repairs done before you or anyone else drives the vehicle. We recommend the use of genuine Saturn parts. 6-3 Scheduled Maintenance When the CHANGE OIL SOON light comes on, it means that service is required for your vehicle. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are driving under the best conditions, the engine oil life system may not indicate that vehicle service is necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and ﬁlter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset. Your Saturn retailer has Saturn-trained service technicians who will perform this work using genuine Saturn parts and reset the system. If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally, you must service your vehicle within 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your last service. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever the oil is changed. See Engine Oil on page 5-15 for information on the Engine Oil Life System and resetting the system. When the CHANGE OIL SOON light appears, certain services, checks and inspections are required. Required services are described in the following for “Maintenance I” and “Maintenance II.” Generally, it is recommended that your ﬁrst service be Maintenance I, your second service be Maintenance II and that you alternate Maintenance I and Maintenance II thereafter. However, in some cases, Maintenance II may be required more often. Maintenance I — Use Maintenance I if the CHANGE OIL SOON light comes on within ten months since vehicle was purchased or Maintenance II was performed. Maintenance II — Use Maintenance II if the previous service performed was Maintenance I. Always use Maintenance II whenever the light comes on ten months or more since the last service or if the light has not come on at all for one year. 6-4 Scheduled Maintenance Service Maintenance I Maintenance II Change engine oil and ﬁlter. An Emission Control Service. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 6-8 Maintenance Footnotes † The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the California Air Resources Board has determined that the failure to perform this maintenance item will not nullify the emission warranty or limit recall liability prior to the completion of the vehicle’s useful life. We, however, urge that all recommended maintenance services be performed at the indicated intervals and the maintenance be recorded. (a) Visually inspect brake lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chaﬁng, etc. Inspect disc brake pads for wear and rotors for surface condition. Inspect drum brake linings for wear or cracks. Inspect other brake parts, including drums, wheel cylinders, calipers, parking brake, etc. (b) Visually inspect front and rear suspension and steering system for damaged, loose or missing parts or signs of wear. (c) Visually inspect hoses and have them replaced if they are cracked, swollen or deteriorated. Inspect all pipes, ﬁttings and clamps; replace with genuine Saturn parts as needed. To help ensure proper operation, a pressure test of the cooling system and pressure cap and cleaning the outside of the radiator and air conditioning condenser is recommended at least once a year. (d) Visually inspect wiper blades for wear or cracking. Replace blade inserts that appear worn or damaged or that streak or miss areas of the windshield. (e) Make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. Have any torn or frayed safety belts replaced. Also look for any opened or broken airbag coverings, and have them repaired or replaced. (The airbag system does not need regular maintenance.) (f) Lubricate all key lock cylinders, door hinges and latches, hood hinges and latches, glove box hinges, sunroof (if equipped) and any folding seat hardware. More frequent lubrication may be required when exposed to a corrosive environment. Applying silicone grease on weatherstrips with a clean cloth will make them last longer, seal better and not stick or squeak. (g) Check system for interference or binding and for damaged or missing parts. Replace parts as needed. Replace any components that have high effort or excessive wear. 6-9 (h) Severe service is when the vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these conditions: (n) Severe service is when the vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these conditions: − In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90°F (32°C) or higher. − In hilly or mountainous terrain. − When doing frequent trailer towing. − Uses such as found in taxi, police or delivery service. (i) Drain, ﬂush and reﬁll cooling system. See Engine Coolant on page 5-28 for what to use. Inspect hoses. Clean radiator, condenser, pressure cap and ﬁller neck. Pressure test the cooling system and pressure cap. (j) A ﬂuid loss in any vehicle system could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected and repaired and the ﬂuid level checked. Add ﬂuid if needed. (k) Or every 12 months, whichever occurs ﬁrst. If you drive regularly under dusty conditions, the ﬁlter may require replacement more often. (m) Change the ﬂuid the ﬁrst time the vehicle is serviced after 100,000 miles (166 000 km) and when the vehicle is serviced after each subsequent 50,000 miles (83 000 km). − In very high temperatures — over 110°F (43°C). − In very low temperatures — under -20°F (-29°C). − When doing frequent trailer towing. Owner Checks and Services These owner checks and services should be performed at the intervals speciﬁed to help ensure the safety, dependability and emission control performance of your vehicle. Your Saturn retailer can assist you with these checks and services. Be sure any necessary repairs are completed at once. Whenever any ﬂuids or lubricants are added to your vehicle, make sure they are the proper ones, as shown in Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 6-14. At Each Fuel Fill It is important to perform these underhood checks at each fuel ﬁll. Engine Oil Level Check Check the engine oil level and add the proper oil if necessary. See Engine Oil on page 5-15 for further details. 6-10 It is important to check your oil regularly Notice: and keep it at the proper level. Failure to keep your engine oil at the proper level can cause damage to your engine not covered by your warranty. Engine Coolant Level Check Check the engine coolant level and add DEX-COOL® coolant mixture if necessary. See Engine Coolant on page 5-28 for further details. Windshield Washer Fluid Level Check Check the windshield washer ﬂuid level in the windshield washer tank and add the proper ﬂuid if necessary. At Least Once a Month Tire Inﬂation Check Visually inspect your tires and make sure tires are inﬂated to the correct pressures. Do not forget to check your spare tire. See Tires on page 5-62 for further details. Check to make sure the spare tire is stored securely. Push, pull and then try to turn the spare tire. If it moves, tighten it. See Changing a Flat Tire on page 5-78. At Least Once a Year Starter Switch Check {CAUTION: When you are doing this inspection, the vehicle could move suddenly. If the vehicle moves, you or others could be injured. 1. Before you start, be sure you have enough room around the vehicle. 2. Firmly apply both the parking brake and the regular brake. See Parking Brake on page 2-23 if necessary. Do not use the accelerator pedal, and be ready to turn off the engine immediately if it starts. 3. On automatic transaxle vehicles, try to start the engine in each gear. The starter should work only in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N). If the starter works in any other position, contact your Saturn retailer for service. 6-11 On manual transaxle vehicles, put the shift lever in NEUTRAL, push the clutch pedal down halfway and try to start the engine. The starter should work only when the clutch pedal is pushed down all the way to the ﬂoor. If the starter works when the clutch is not pushed all the way down, contact your Saturn retailer for service. Automatic Transaxle Shift Lock Control System Check {CAUTION: When you are doing this inspection, the vehicle could move suddenly. If the vehicle moves, you or others could be injured. 1. Before you start, be sure you have enough room around the vehicle. It should be parked on a level surface. 2. Firmly apply the parking brake. See Parking Brake on page 2-23 if necessary. Be ready to apply the regular brake immediately if the vehicle begins to move. 3. With the engine off, turn the ignition to RUN, but do not start the engine. Without applying the regular brake, try to move the shift lever out of PARK (P) with normal effort. If the shift lever moves out of PARK (P), contact your Saturn retailer for service. Ignition Transaxle Lock Check While parked, and with the parking brake set, try to turn the ignition to LOCK in each shift lever position. (cid:127) With an automatic transaxle, the ignition should turn to LOCK only when the shift lever is in PARK (P). The key should come out only in LOCK. (cid:127) With a manual transaxle, the key should come out only in LOCK. Contact your Saturn retailer if service is required. 6-12 To check the PARK (P) mechanism’s holding ability: With the engine running, shift to PARK (P). Then release the parking brake followed by the regular brake. Contact your Saturn retailer if service is required. Underbody Flushing Service At least every spring, use plain water to ﬂush any corrosive materials from the underbody. Take care to clean thoroughly any areas where mud and other debris can collect. Parking Brake and Automatic Transaxle Park (P) Mechanism Check {CAUTION: When you are doing this check, your vehicle could begin to move. You or others could be injured and property could be damaged. Make sure there is room in front of your vehicle in case it begins to roll. Be ready to apply the regular brake at once should the vehicle begin to move. Park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing downhill. Keeping your foot on the regular brake, set the parking brake. To check the parking brake’s holding ability: With the engine running and transaxle in NEUTRAL (N), slowly remove foot pressure from the regular brake pedal. Do this until the vehicle is held by the parking brake only. 6-13 (cid:127) (cid:127) Recommended Fluids and Lubricants Fluids and lubricants identiﬁed below by name, part number or speciﬁcation may be obtained from your retailer. Canadian owners refer to your Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet, located in the front cover pocket of your owner’s handbook, for information on the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan (CAMVAP). The BBB Auto Line Program is an out-of-court program administered by the Council of Better Business Bureaus to settle automotive disputes regarding vehicle repairs or the interpretation of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This program is available at no cost to you, our customer. We ask that you not resort to BBB Auto Line until after Saturn and its retailers have been given the opportunity to satisfy your vehicle concerns. However, U.S. residents may ﬁle a claim at any time by contacting your local Better Business Bureau at 1-800-955-5100. Although you may be required to resort to this informal dispute resolution program prior to ﬁling a court action, use of the program is free of charge and your case will generally be heard within 40 days. To register your vehicle, visit www.MyGMLink.com (United States) or My GM Canada within www.gmcanada.com (Canada). 7-4 (cid:127) GM Mobility Program for Persons with Disabilities This program, available to qualiﬁed applicants, can reimburse you up to $1,000 toward eligible aftermarket driver or passenger adaptive equipment you may require for your vehicle (hand controls, wheelchair/ scooter lifts, etc.). This program can also provide you with free resource information, such as area driver assessment centers and mobility equipment installers. The offer is available for a limited period of time from the date of vehicle purchase/lease. For more details, or to determine your vehicle’s eligibility, see your Saturn retailer or call the Saturn Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-553-6000. TTY users in Canada may call 1-800-263-3830. 7-5 Roadside Assistance Program For vehicles purchased in the U.S. call 1-800-553-6000 (TTY: 1-800-833-6000). For vehicles purchased in Canada call 1-800-268-6800. As the proud owner of a new Saturn vehicle, you are automatically enrolled in the Saturn Roadside Assistance Program. This value-added service is intended to provide you with peace of mind as you drive in the city or travel the open road. Saturn’s Roadside Assistance toll-free number is staffed by courteous and capable Roadside Assistance Representatives who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We will provide the following services during the Bumper-to-Bumper warranty period at no expense to you: Fuel Delivery: Delivery of enough fuel ($5 maximum) for the customer to get to the nearest service station. Lock-out Service (identiﬁcation required): Replacement keys or locksmith service will be covered at no charge if you are unable to gain entry into your vehicle. Delivery of the replacement key will be covered within 10 miles (16 km). (cid:127) Emergency Tow: Tow to the nearest Saturn retailer for warranty service or in the event of a vehicle-disabling accident. Assistance provided when the vehicle is mired in sand, mud, or snow. Flat Tire Change: Installation of a spare tire will be covered at no charge. (The customer is responsible for the repair or replacement of the tire if not covered by a warrantable failure.) Jump Start: No-start occurrences which require a battery jump start will be covered at no charge. (cid:127) Saturn Retailer Locator Service In many instances, mechanical failures are covered under Saturn’s Bumper-to-Bumper warranty. However, when other services are utilized, our Roadside Assistance Representatives will explain any payment obligations you might incur. Vehicle Data Collection and Event Data Recorders Your vehicle, like other modern motor vehicles, has a number of sophisticated computer systems that monitor and control several aspects of the vehicle’s performance. Your vehicle uses on-board vehicle computers to monitor emission control components to optimize fuel economy, to monitor conditions for air bag deployment and, if so equipped, to provide anti-lock braking and to help the driver control the vehicle in difficult driving situations. Some information may be stored during regular operations to facilitate repair of detected malfunctions; other information is stored only in a crash or near crash event by computer systems commonly called event data recorders (EDR). In a crash or near crash event, computer systems, such as the Air Bag Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) in your vehicle may record information about the condition of the vehicle and how it was operated, such as engine speed, brake applications, throttle position, vehicle speed, safety belt usage, air bag readiness, air bag performance data, and the severity of a collision. This information has been used to improve vehicle crash performance and may be used to improve crash performance of future vehicles and driving safety. Unlike the data recorders on many airplanes, these on-board systems do not record sounds, such as conversation of vehicle occupants. 7-7 To read this information, special equipment is needed and access to the vehicle or the SDM is required. GM will not access information about a crash event or share it with others other than (cid:127) with the consent of the vehicle owner or, if the vehicle is leased, with the consent of the lessee, in response to an official request of police or similar government office, as part of GM’s defense of litigation through the discovery process, or as required by law. In addition, once GM collects or receives data, GM may use the data for GM research needs, (cid:127) make it available for research where appropriate conﬁdentiality is to be maintained and need is shown, or share summary data which is not tied to a speciﬁc vehicle with non-GM organizations for research purposes. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it ﬁnds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign.
