Windshield wipers Switching the windshield wipers on/ off G WARNING The windshield will not longer be wiped properly if the wiper blades are worn. This could prevent you from observing the traffic
conditions, thereby causing an accident. Replace the wiper blades twice a year, ideally in spring and fall.
! Do not operate the windshield wipers when the windshield is dry, as this could damage the wiper blades. Moreover, dust that has collected on the windshield can scratch the glass if wiping takes place when the windshield is dry. If it is necessary to switch on the windshield wipers in dry weather conditions, always use washer fluid when operating the windshield wipers.
! If the windshield wipers leave smears on the windshield after the vehicle has been washed in an automatic car wash, wax or other residues may be the reason for this. Clean the windshield using washer fluid after washing the vehicle in an automatic car wash.
! Intermittent wiping with rain sensor: due
to optical influences and the windshield becoming dirty in dry weather conditions, the windshield wipers may be activated inadvertently. This could then damage the windshield wiper blades or scratch the windshield. For this reason, you should always switch off the windshield wipers in dry weather.

corresponding position.
In the Ä or Å position, the appropriate wiping frequency is set automatically according to the intensity of the rain. In the Å position, the rain sensor is more sensitive than in the Ä position, causing the windshield wipers to wipe more frequently.
Replacing the wiper blades Important safety notes G WARNING For safety reasons, switch off the windshield wipers and remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock before changing the wiper blades (vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: make sure that the on-board electronics are in state 0). Otherwise, the wiper motor could be switched on suddenly and cause injury.
! Never open the hood if a windshield wiper
arm has been folded away from the windshield. Never fold a windshield wiper arm without a wiper blade back onto the windshield. Hold the windshield wiper arm firmly when you change the wiper blade. If you release the windshield wiper arm without a wiper blade and it falls onto the windshield, the windshield may be damaged by the force of the impact. Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the wiper blades changed at a qualified specialist workshop.

make sure that you touch only the wiper arm of the wiper.
Replacing the wiper blades Removing the wiper blades X Remove the SmartKey from the ignition
lock or turn it to position 0 (KEYLESS-GO).
X Fold the wiper arm away from the
windshield until it engages.
X Firmly press release knob : and pull the wiper blade upwards from the wiper arm in the direction of the arrow.
Installing the wiper blades X Position the new wiper blade in the retainer on the wiper arm and slide it into place in the opposite direction to the arrow. The wiper blade audibly engages.
X Make sure that wiper blade is seated
correctly.
X Fold the wiper arm back onto the
windshield.

136 Overview of climate control systems
i Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period
during warm weather, e.g. using the convenience opening feature (Y page 86). This will speed up the cooling process and the desired vehicle interior temperature will be reached more quickly.
i The integrated filter can filter out most
particles of dust, and completely filters out pollen. A clogged filter reduces the amount of air supplied to the vehicle interior. For this reason, you should always observe the interval for replacing the filter, which is specified in the Maintenance Booklet. Since the replacement interval depends on environmental conditions, e.g. heavy air pollution, the interval may be shorter than stated in the Maintenance Booklet. i It is possible that the residual heat
function may be activated automatically an hour after the SmartKey is removed. The vehicle is then ventilated for 30 minutes to dry the air-conditioning system.

Overview of climate control systems Important safety notes G WARNING Observe the settings recommended on the following pages. The windows could otherwise fog up. This could prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident. G WARNING Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled replacement interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior and the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others. Have a clogged filter replaced as soon as possible at a qualified specialist workshop.
Climate control regulates the temperature and the humidity in the vehicle interior and filters undesirable substances out of the air. Climate control is only operational when the engine is running. The system only works optimally when the side windows and the roof are closed. The residual heat function can only be activated or deactivated with the ignition switched off (Y page 145).

Information about using 3-zone automatic climate control The following contains instructions and recommendations to enable you to get the most out of your automatic climate control. RActivate climate control using the à and ¿ buttons. The indicator lamps above the à and ¿ buttons light up.
RIn automatic mode, you can also use the
ñ button to set a climate mode (FOCUS/MEDIUM/DIFFUSE). The MEDIUM level is recommended.
RSet the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †). ROnly use the "defrosting" function briefly
until the windshield is clear again.
ROnly use "air-recirculation" mode briefly, e.g. if there are unpleasant outside odors or when in a tunnel. The windows could otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn into the vehicle in air-recirculation mode.
RUse the ZONE function to adopt the
temperature settings on the driver's side for the front-passenger side and the rear compartment as well. The indicator lamp above the á button goes out.
RUse the residual heat function if you want
to heat or ventilate the vehicle interior when the ignition is switched off. The "residual heat" function can only be activated or deactivated with the ignition switched off.

Activating/deactivating cooling with air dehumidification Points to observe before use G WARNING If you switch off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions, thereby causing an accident.
The cooling with air dehumidification function is only available when the engine is running. The air inside the vehicle is cooled and dehumidified according to the temperature selected. Condensation may drip from the underside of the vehicle when it is in cooling mode. This is normal and not a sign that there is a malfunction.

i The cooling with air dehumidification function uses refrigerant R134a. This coolant does not contain chlorofluorocarbons, and therefore does not damage the ozone layer.
Activating/deactivating X To activate: press the ¿ button.

The indicator lamp above the ¿ button goes out. The cooling with air dehumidification function has a delayed switch-off feature.
Problems with the cooling with air dehumidification function When you press the ¿ button, the indicator lamp in the button flashes three times or remains off. You can no longer switch on the cooling with air dehumidification function. X Visit a qualified specialist workshop.
Setting climate control to automatic G WARNING If you switch off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.
In automatic mode, the set temperature is maintained automatically at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air distribution. Automatic mode will achieve optimal operation if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated. If desired, cooling with air dehumidification can be deactivated.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.
X Set the desired temperature. X To activate: press the à button.
The indicator lamp above the à button lights up. Automatic air distribution and airflow are activated.
i 3-zone automatic climate control: when
automatic mode is activated, you can select a climate mode setting (Y page 141).
X To deactivate: press the air distribution
button. Dual-zone automatic climate control: press button F(Y page 137). 3-zone automatic climate control: press button I(Y page 139). The indicator lamp above the à button goes out.

Adjusting the climate mode settings You can select the following climate mode settings in automatic mode: FOCUS

Defrosting the windshield You can use this function to defrost the windshield or to defrost the inside of the windshield and the side windows. Switch off the "defrosting" function as soon as the windshield is clear again. X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the ¬ button.
The indicator lamp above the ¬ button lights up. The climate control system switches to the following functions: Rheating with dehumidification on Rhigh airflow (depending on the outside

Rear window defroster Activating/deactivating G WARNING Clear all windows of ice or snow before setting off. Otherwise, impaired visibility could endanger you and others.
The rear window defroster has a high current draw. You should therefore switch it off as soon as the rear window is clear. Otherwise, the rear window defroster switches off automatically after several minutes. If the battery voltage is too low, the rear window defroster may switch off. X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.
X Press the ¤ button.
The indicator lamp above the ¤ button lights up or goes out.
Problems with the rear window defroster The rear window defroster has deactivated prematurely or cannot be activated. X Switch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. reading lamps or interior lighting. When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear window defroster is activated again automatically.
Activating/deactivating air- recirculation mode G WARNING At low outside temperatures, only switch over to air-recirculation mode for brief periods.

Otherwise, the windows could fog up, thus impairing visibility and endangering yourself and others. This may prevent you from observing the traffic conditions and thereby cause an accident.
You can deactivate the flow of fresh air if unpleasant odors are entering the vehicle from outside. The air already inside the vehicle will then be recirculated. The operation of air-recirculation mode is the same for all control panels. X Turn the SmartKey to position 2 in the
ignition lock.
X To activate: press the g button.
The indicator lamp above the g button lights up.
i In the event of high pollution levels1 or at
high outside temperatures, air- recirculation mode is automatically activated. When air-recirculation mode is activated automatically, the indicator lamp above the g button does not light up. Outside air is added after about 30 minutes.
X To deactivate: press the g button.
The indicator lamp above the g button goes out.
i Air-recirculation mode deactivates
automatically: Rafter approximately five minutes at
outside temperatures below approximately 41 ‡ (5 †)
Rafter approximately five minutes if cooling with air dehumidification is deactivated
Rafter approximately 30 minutes at
outside temperatures above approximately 41 ‡ (5 †)
Activating/deactivating the residual heat function The residual heat function is only available in vehicles for Canada with automatic climate control. It is possible to make use of the residual heat of the engine to continue heating the stationary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after the engine has been switched off. The heating time depends on the temperature that has been set. Coupe: the residual heat function only works optimally if the side windows and panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel are closed. Cabriolet: the residual heat function only works optimally if the soft top is closed. X To activate: press the Ì button.
The indicator lamp above the Ì button lights up.
i The blower will run at a low speed
regardless of the airflow setting.
i If you activate the residual heat function at high temperatures, only the ventilation will be activated. The blower runs at medium speed.
X To deactivate: press the Ì button.
The indicator lamp above the Ì button goes out.
i It is possible that the residual heat
function may be activated automatically an hour after the SmartKey is removed. The vehicle is then ventilated for 30 minutes to dry the air-conditioning system.

Setting the air vents Important safety notes G WARNING Very hot or very cold air can flow from the air vents. This could cause burns or frostbite to bare skin in the immediate vicinity of the vents. Keep bare skin away from these air vents. If necessary, direct the airflow away to a different area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh air through the air vents into the vehicle interior, please observe the following notes: Rkeep the air inlet between the windshield and the hood free of blockages, such as ice, snow or leaves.
Rnever cover the air vents or air intake grilles
in the vehicle interior.
Setting the center air vents
: Center air vent, left ; Center air vent, right = Center vent thumbwheel, right ? Center vent thumbwheel, left X To open/close: turn thumbwheels =
and ? up or down.
Setting the side air vents
X To open/close: turn thumbwheel = up or
down.
i Side window defroster vent : is only
open when side air vent ; is open.
Setting the glove box air vent ! Close the air vent when heating the
vehicle. At high outside temperatures, open the air vent and activate the "cooling with air dehumidification" function. Otherwise, temperature-sensitive items stored in the glove box could be damaged.
: Air vent thumbwheel ; Air vent When automatic climate control is activated, the glove box can be ventilated, for instance to cool its contents. The level of airflow depends on the airflow and air distribution settings.
X To open/close: turn thumbwheel :
clockwise or counter-clockwise.

AIRSCARF, setting the vents G WARNING When operating the climate control, the air that enters the passenger compartment through the air vents can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set temperature). This could cause burns or frostbite to unprotected skin in the immediate area of the air vents. Always keep sufficient distance between unprotected parts of the body and the air vents. If necessary, use the air distribution adjustment to direct the air to air vents in the vehicle interior that are not in the immediate area of unprotected skin.

Breaking-in notes Important safety notes New and replaced brake pads and discs only reach their optimum braking effect after several hundred kilometers of driving. Compensate for this by applying greater force to the brake pedal.
The first 1,000 miles (1,500 km) The more you look after the engine when it is new, the more satisfied you will be with its performance in the future. RYou should therefore drive at varying vehicle and engine speeds for the first 1,000 miles (1,500 km).

! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use the engine's full performance until it has reached operating temperature. Only shift the automatic transmission to the desired drive position when the vehicle is stationary. Where possible, avoid spinning the drive wheels when pulling away on slippery roads. objects, e.g. metal cases. This can affect the functionality of KEYLESS-GO.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with a SmartKey featuring an integrated KEYLESS- GO start function and a detachable Start/ Stop button. The Start/Stop button must be inserted into the ignition lock and the SmartKey must be in the vehicle. Pressing the Start/Stop button several times in succession corresponds to the different SmartKey positions in the ignition lock. This is only the case if you are not depressing the brake pedal. If you depress the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button, the engine starts immediately. The Start/Stop button can be removed from the ignition lock. Then, you can insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock. i You do not have to remove the Start/Stop
button from the ignition lock when you leave the vehicle. You should, however, always take the SmartKey with you when leaving the vehicle. As long as the SmartKey is in the vehicle: Rthe vehicle can be started using the
Start/Stop button and
Relectrically powered equipment can be
operated.

Starting procedure with the SmartKey i To start the engine using the SmartKey instead of KEYLESS-GO, pull the Start/ Stop button out of the ignition lock.
X Turn the SmartKey in the ignition lock to position 3 (Y page 151) and release it as soon as the engine is running.
Using KEYLESS-GO to start the engine G WARNING As long as the SmartKey is in your vehicle, the vehicle can be started. Therefore, never leave children unattended in the vehicle, as they could otherwise accidentally start the engine. When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
i The Start/Stop button can be used to
start the vehicle without inserting the SmartKey into the ignition lock. The Start/ Stop button must be inserted into the ignition lock and the SmartKey must be in the vehicle.
X Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.

once. The engine starts.
Pulling away Automatic transmission G WARNING If the engine speed is above the idling speed and you engage transmission position D or R, the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There is a risk of an accident.

When engaging transmission position D or R, always firmly depress the brake pedal and do not simultaneously accelerate.
! If a warning tone sounds and the Release Park. Brake message appears in the multifunction display, the parking brake is still applied. Release the parking brake.

speeds after a cold start. This helps the catalytic converter to reach its operating temperature more quickly.
Hill start assist G WARNING After a short time, hill start assist will no longer brake your vehicle and it could roll away. There is a risk of an accident and injury. Therefore, quickly move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal. Never leave the vehicle when it is held by hill start assist.
Hill start assist helps you when pulling away forwards or in reverse on an uphill gradient.

It holds the vehicle for a short time after you have removed your foot from the brake pedal. This gives you enough time to move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal and to depress it before the vehicle begins to roll. X Take your foot off the brake pedal.
The vehicle is then held for about a second.
X Pull away. Hill start assist will not function if: Ryou are pulling away on a level road or on
a downhill gradient.

ECO start/stop function Important safety notes G WARNING If the engine is switched off automatically and you exit the vehicle, the engine is restarted automatically. The vehicle may begin moving. There is a risk of accident and injury. If you wish to exit the vehicle, always turn off the ignition and secure the vehicle against rolling away.
General notes When the green ¤ symbol is shown in the multifunction display, the ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically when the vehicle stops moving. The engine starts automatically when the driver wants to pull away again. The ECO start/stop function thereby helps you to reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of your vehicle. Every time you switch on the engine using the SmartKey or the Start/Stop button, the ECO start/stop function is activated. If the ECO start/stop function has been manually deactivated (Y page 155) or a
malfunction has caused the system to be deactivated, the ¤ symbol is not displayed.
Automatic engine switch-off Method of operation The ECO start/stop function is operational and the ¤ symbol is displayed in green in the multifunction display, if: Rthe indicator lamp in the ECO button is lit
green.
Rthe vehicle is stationary. Rthe outside temperature is within the
comfort range.
Rthe engine is at normal operating
temperature.
Rthe set temperature for the vehicle interior
has been reached.
Rthe battery is sufficiently charged. Rthe system detects that the windshield is not fogged up when the air-conditioning system is switched on.
Rthe hood is closed. Rthe driver's door is closed and the driver's
seat belt is fastened.
If conditions for automatic engine switch-off have not been fulfilled, the ¤ symbol will be shown in yellow. i All of the vehicle's systems remain active
when the engine has been stopped automatically.
i The engine can be switched off
automatically a maximum of four times (first stop and three subsequent stops) in succession. The ¤ symbol is shown in yellow in the multifunction display after the engine has been started automatically for the fourth time. The automatic engine switch-off is available once again when the ¤ symbol is shown in green in the multifunction display.
i During automatic engine switch-off, the climate control system only operates at a
reduced capacity. If you require full climate control capacity, the ECO start/stop function can be deactivated by pressing the ECO button (Y page 155).
Vehicles with automatic transmission The ECO start/stop function switches the engine off automatically if you: Rbrake the vehicle to a standstill in transmission position D or N and
Ryou depress the brake pedal. i You can still activate the HOLD function when the vehicle is stationary, even if the engine has been switched off automatically. It is then not necessary to continue applying the brakes during the automatic stop phase. When you depress the accelerator pedal, the engine starts automatically and the braking effect of the HOLD function is deactivated. Depress the accelerator pedal carefully, as the engine must be started first.
i If you shift the transmission from R to D,
the ECO start/stop function is available again once the ¤ symbol reappears in green in the multifunction display.
Automatic engine start General notes The engine starts automatically if: Ryou switch off the ECO start/stop function
by pressing the ECO button. Ryou engage reverse gear R. Rthe vehicle starts to roll. Rthe brake system requires this. Rthe temperature in the vehicle interior
deviates from the set range.
Rthe system detects moisture on the windshield when the air-conditioning system is switched on.
Rthe charge level of the battery is too low. Ryou unfasten your seat belt or open the
driver's door.

Problems with the engine Problem The engine does not start. The starter motor can be heard.
Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions RThere is a malfunction in the engine electronics. RThere is a malfunction in the fuel supply. X Before attempting to start the engine again, turn the SmartKey in the ignition back to position 0 or press the Start/Stop button repeatedly until all indicator lamps in the instrument cluster go out.
The engine does not start. You cannot hear the starter motor.
The engine is not running smoothly and is misfiring.
The coolant temperature gauge shows a value above 248 ‡ (120 †).
X Try to start the engine again (Y page 152). Avoid excessively
long and frequent attempts to start the engine as these will drain the battery.
If the engine does not start after several attempts: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or discharged. X Jump-start the vehicle (Y page 313). If the engine does not start despite attempts to jump-start it: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The starter motor was exposed to a thermal load that was too high. X Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two
minutes.
X Try to start the engine again. If the engine still does not start: X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. There is a malfunction in the engine electronics or in a mechanical component of the engine management system. X Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly. X Have the cause rectified immediately at a qualified specialist
workshop. Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter and damage it.
The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently. X Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant
to cool down.
X Check the coolant level (Y page 296). Observe the warning
notes as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
