Safety Seat belts


Problem


ü After starting the engine, the red seat belt warning lamp lights up for 6 seconds.


ü After starting the engine, the red seat belt warning lamp lights up. In addition, a warning tone sounds for up to six seconds.


ü The red seat belt warning lamp lights up after the engine starts, as soon as the driver's or the front-passenger door is closed.


Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The seat belt warning lamp reminds the driver and front passenger to fasten their seat belts. X Fasten your seat belt (Y page 55).


The driver's seat belt is not fastened. X Fasten your seat belt (Y page 55).


The warning tone ceases.

The warning lamp goes out.


There are objects on the front-passenger seat. X Remove the objects from the front-passenger seat and stow

Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions There is not enough brake fluid in the brake fluid reservoir. G WARNING The braking effect may be impaired. There is a risk of an accident. X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying attention to road and traffic conditions. Do not continue driving under any circumstances.


X Secure the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 167). X Do not add brake fluid. Adding more will not remedy the


malfunction.


X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction


display.


ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) is deactivated due to a malfunction. BAS (Brake Assist), BAS PLUS, ESP® (Electronic Stability Program), PRE-SAFE®, PRE-SAFE® Brake, the HOLD function and hill start assist are therefore also deactivated, for example. ATTENTION ASSIST is deactivated. G WARNING The brake system continues to function normally, but without the functions listed above. The wheels could therefore lock if you brake hard, for example. The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely affected. The braking distance in an emergency braking situation can increase. If ESP® is not operational, ESP® is unable to stabilize the vehicle. There is an increased risk of skidding and an accident. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction


display.


X Drive on carefully. X Visit a qualified specialist workshop. If the ABS control unit is faulty, there is also a possibility that other systems, such as the navigation system or the automatic transmission, will not be available.

Engine Problem


The yellow Check Engine warning lamp lights up while the engine is running.


The yellow reserve fuel warning lamp lights up while the engine is running.


The yellow reserve fuel warning lamp flashes while the vehicle is in motion. In addition, the ; Check Engine warning lamp may light up.


The red coolant warning lamp lights up while the engine is running and the coolant temperature gauge is at the start of the scale.


Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions There may be a malfunction, for example: Rin the engine management Rin the fuel injection system Rin the exhaust system Rin the ignition system Rin the fuel system The emission limit values may be exceeded and the engine may be running in emergency mode. X Have the vehicle checked as soon as possible at a qualified


specialist workshop.


i In some states, you must immediately visit a qualified


specialist workshop as soon as the yellow Check Engine warning lamp lights up. This is due to the legal requirements in effect in these states. If in doubt, check whether such legal regulations apply in the state in which you are currently driving.


The fuel level has dropped into the reserve range. X Refuel at the nearest gas station.

The red coolant warning lamp comes on while the engine is running.


Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The coolant level is too low. If the coolant level is correct, the airflow to the engine radiator may be blocked or the electric engine radiator fan may be malfunctioning. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction


display.


X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely and switch off the engine,


paying attention to road and traffic conditions.


X Secure the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 167). X Leave the vehicle and keep a safe distance from the vehicle until


the engine has cooled down.


X Check the coolant level and add coolant, observing the warning


notes (Y page 296).


X If you need to add coolant more often than usual, have the


engine coolant system checked.


The red coolant warning lamp comes on while the engine is running. A warning tone also sounds.


X Make sure that the air supply to the engine radiator is not


blocked, e.g. by snow, slush or ice.


X Do not start the engine again until the coolant temperature is under 248 ‡ (120 †). Otherwise, the engine could be damaged.


X Drive to the nearest qualified specialist workshop. X Avoid subjecting the engine to heavy loads, e.g. driving in


mountainous terrain, and stop-and-go traffic.


The coolant temperature has exceeded 248 ‡ (120 †). The airflow to the engine radiator may be blocked or the coolant level may be too low. G WARNING The engine is not being cooled sufficiently and may be damaged. Do not drive when your engine is overheated. This can cause some fluids which may have leaked into the engine compartment to catch fire. Steam from the overheated engine can also cause serious burns which can occur just by opening the hood. There is a risk of injury. X Observe the additional display messages in the multifunction


display.


X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely and switch off the engine,


paying attention to road and traffic conditions.


X Secure the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 167).

Tires Problem


USA only: The yellow tire pressure monitor warning lamp (pressure loss/ malfunction) is lit. Canada only: The yellow tire pressure monitor warning lamp (pressure loss) is lit.


USA only: The yellow tire pressure monitor warning lamp (pressure loss/ malfunction) flashes for approximately one minute and then remains lit.


Possible causes/consequences and M Solutions The tire pressure monitor has detected a loss of pressure in at least one of the tires. G WARNING With tire pressures which are too low, there is a risk of the following hazards: Rthey may burst, especially as the load and vehicle speed


increase.


Rthey may wear excessively and/or unevenly, which may greatly


impair tire traction.


Rthe driving characteristics, as well as steering and braking, may


be greatly impaired. There is a risk of an accident.


X Stop the vehicle without making any sudden steering or braking maneuvers. Pay attention to the traffic conditions as you do so.

Stowage areas Loading guidelines G WARNING Always fasten items being carried as securely as possible. Use cargo tie-down rings and fastening materials appropriate for the weight and size of the load. In an accident, during hard braking or sudden maneuvers, loose items will be thrown around inside the vehicle. This can cause injury to vehicle occupants unless the items are securely fastened in the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury during a collision or sudden maneuver, exercise care when transporting cargo. Do not pile luggage or cargo higher than the seat backrests. The trunk is the preferred place to carry objects. Never drive a vehicle with the trunk open. Deadly carbon monoxide (CO) gases may enter vehicle interior resulting in unconsciousness and death.


The handling characteristics of a laden vehicle are dependent on the distribution of the load within the vehicle. For this reason, you should observe the following notes when transporting a load: Rwhen transporting a load, never exceed the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight

Stowage nets G WARNING Parcel nets are intended for storing light- weight items only, such as road maps, mail, etc. Heavy objects, objects with sharp edges, or fragile objects may not be transported in the parcel nets. In an accident, during hard braking, or sudden maneuvers, they could be thrown around inside the vehicle and cause injury to vehicle occupants. Parcel nets cannot protect transported goods in the event of an accident.

Parcel nets are located in the front-passenger footwell and on the left-hand side of the trunk (Coupe) or left and right-hand sides of the trunk (Cabriolet).


The left-hand and right-hand rear seat backrests can be folded down separately to increase the trunk capacity.


Folding the seat backrest forward


Through-loading facility in the rear compartment G WARNING Do not transport any unsecured items in the through-loading area.

Through-loading facility in the rear bench seat (Coupe) Important safety notes G WARNING When expanding the cargo volume, always fold the seat backrests fully forward. Unless you are transporting cargo, the seat backrests must remain properly locked in the upright position. In an accident, during hard braking or sudden maneuvers, loose items will be thrown around inside the vehicle. This can cause injury to vehicle occupants unless the items are securely fastened in the vehicle. Always use the cargo tie-down rings.


i Vehicles with memory function: when you


fold one or both parts of the rear seat backrest forwards, the respective front seat moves forward slightly, when necessary, in order to avoid contact. X Vehicles without memory function: if necessary, move the driver's or front- passenger seat forwards.


X Open the trunk. X Pull right-hand or left-hand rear seat


backrest release handle :. The corresponding rear seat backrest is released.


X Fold rear seat backrest ; forwards. X Move the driver's or front-passenger seat


back if necessary.


Folding the seat backrest back G WARNING Always lock the seat backrest in its upright position when the rear seat bench is occupied, or the extended cargo volume is not in use. Check for secure locking by pushing and pulling on the seat backrest. In an accident, during hard braking or sudden maneuvers, loose items will be thrown around inside the vehicle. This can cause injury to vehicle occupants unless the items are securely fastened in the vehicle. To help avoid personal injury during a collision or sudden maneuver, exercise care when transporting cargo.


! Make sure that the seat belt does not


become trapped when folding the rear seat backrest back. Otherwise, it could be damaged.

Bag hook ! The bag hook can bear a maximum load of 6.6lbs (3kg) and should not be used to secure a load.

Stowage well under the trunk floor ! Unhook the handle before again before closing the trunk lid and clip it in securely to prevent the handle flap from protruding. Otherwise, you could damage the handle.

Roof carrier (Coupe) Important safety notes G WARNING Only use roof racks approved by Mercedes- Benz for your vehicle model to avoid damage to the vehicle. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. Otherwise, an improperly attached roof rack system or its load could become detached from the vehicle. Do not exceed the maximum roof load of 220 lb (100 kg). Take into consideration that when the roof rack is loaded, the handling characteristics are different from those when operating the vehicle without the roof rack loaded.


! Mercedes-Benz recommends that you


only use roof carriers that have been tested and approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This helps to prevent damage to the vehicle. Position the load on the roof rack in such a way that the vehicle will not sustain damage even when it is in motion. Depending on the vehicle equipment, ensure that when the roof carrier is installed you can: Ropen the panorama roof with power tilt/

Liquids spilled on vehicle equipment may cause damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. When not in use, keep the cup holder closed. An open cup holder may cause injury to you or others when contacted during braking, vehicle maneuvers, or in an accident. Keep in mind that objects placed in the cup holder may come loose during braking, vehicle maneuvers, or in an accident and be thrown around in the vehicle interior. Objects thrown around in the vehicle interior may cause an accident and/or serious personal injury.

Sun visors Overview G WARNING Do not use the vanity mirror while driving. Keep the vanity mirrors in the sun visors closed while the vehicle is in motion. Reflected glare can endanger you and others.

Rear window roller sunblind (Coupe) Important safety notes G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, even if they are secured in a child restraint system, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. A child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury. The children could: Rinjure themselves on parts of the vehicle Rbe seriously or fatally injured through


excessive exposure to extreme heat or cold Rinjure themselves or cause an accident with


vehicle equipment that can be operated even if the SmartKey is removed from the ignition lock or removed from the vehicle, such as seat adjustment, steering wheel adjustment, or the memory function


If children open a door, they could injure other persons or get out of the vehicle and injure themselves or be injured by following traffic. Do not expose the child restraint system to direct sunlight. The child restraint system's metal parts, for example, could become very hot, and the child could be burned on these parts. G WARNING When adjusting a roller sunblind, the roller blind moves up or down. You might become trapped in the process. In the event of danger, briefly press the button for the roller sunblind to change the roller blind's direction of movement.


Extending/retracting the roller sunblind ! Make sure that the roller sunblind can


move freely. Otherwise, the roller sunblind or other objects could be damaged.

Cigarette lighter G WARNING When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. A child's unsupervised access to a vehicle could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury. If children open a door, they could injure other persons or get out of the vehicle and injure themselves or be injured by following traffic. Do not expose the child restraint system to direct sunlight. The child restraint system's metal parts, for example, could become very hot, and the child could be burned on these parts. G WARNING Never touch the heating element or sides of the lighter; they are extremely hot. Hold the knob only. Make sure any children traveling with you do not injure themselves or start a fire with the hot cigarette lighter.

The sockets can be used for accessories with a maximum draw of 180 W (15 A). Accessories include such items as lamps or chargers for mobile phones. If you use the sockets for long periods when the engine is switched off, the battery may discharge. i An emergency cut-out ensures that the on-board voltage does not drop too low. If the on-board voltage is too low, the power to the sockets is automatically cut. This ensures that there is sufficient power to start the engine.

Rvehicle identification number Rinformation on serious accidents Shortly after the emergency call has been initiated, a voice connection is automatically established between the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center and the vehicle occupants. If the vehicle occupants respond, the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center attempts to get more information on the emergency. i If there is no response from the vehicle occupants, an ambulance is immediately sent to the vehicle.


Making an emergency call G WARNING If you feel at any way in jeopardy when in the vehicle (e.g. smoke or fire in the vehicle, vehicle in a dangerous road location), please do not wait for voice contact after you have pressed the SOS button. Carefully leave the vehicle and move to a safe location. The Response Center will automatically contact local emergency officials with the vehicle's approximate location if they receive an automatic SOS signal and cannot make voice contact with the vehicle occupants.
