Setting daytime running lamp mode (USA only)

The selection marker is on the current setting.

This function is not available in countries where the daytime running lamp mode is mandatory and therefore in a constant mode.

With daytime running lamp mode activated and the exterior lamp switch in position M or U the low beam headlamps are switched on when the engine is running. In low ambient light conditions the following lamps will switch on additionally: 앫 Parking lamps 앫 Tail lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps

For more information on the daytime run- ning lamp mode, see “Lighting” (컄 page 131).

If you turn the exterior lamp switch to another position, the corresponding lamp(s) will switch on. For safety reasons, resetting the Lighting submenu to factory settings (컄 page 153) while driving will not deactivate the daytime running lamp mode. The following message appears in the multifunction display: Lighting – Cannot be completely reset to factory settings while driving.

Setting locator lighting With the locator lighting feature activated and the exterior lamp switch in position U, the following lamps will switch on during darkness when the vehi- cle is unlocked with the SmartKey: 앫 Parking lamps 앫 Tail lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps 앫 Front fog lamps The locator lighting switches off when the driver’s door is opened. If you do not open a door after unlocking the vehicle with the SmartKey, the lamps will switch off automatically after approxi- mately 40 seconds. To activate locator lighting: 왘 Make sure the function surround light-

ing is set to on, see (컄 page 161).

Setting night security illumination (Headlamps delayed shut-off) Use this function to set whether you would like the exterior lamps to illuminate during darkness after exiting the vehicle and all doors closed. With the delayed shut-off feature activated and the exterior lamp switch in position U before the engine is turned off, the following lamps will switch on for 15 seconds when the engine is turned off: 앫 Parking lamps 앫 Tail lamps 앫 License plate lamps 앫 Side marker lamps 앫 Front fog lamps If after turning off the engine you do not open a door or do not close an opened door, the lamps will automatically switch off after 60 seconds.

You can reactivate this function within ten minutes by opening a door.

You can temporarily deactivate the de- layed shut-off feature: 왘 Before leaving the vehicle, turn the

SmartKey in the starter switch to position 0.

왘 Then turn it to position 2 and back

to 0. The delayed shut-off feature is deactivated. It will reactivate as soon as you reinsert the SmartKey in the starter switch.

the headlamps delayed shut-off feature on or off.

Setting interior lighting delayed shut-off Use this function to set whether you would like the interior lighting to remain lit during darkness after you have removed the SmartKey from the starter switch. If acti- vated it remains lit for 10 seconds. 왘 Move the selection marker with

Warning!

A driver’s attention to the road must always be his/her primary focus when driving. For your safety and the safety of others, we recommend that you pull over to a safe location and stop before placing or taking a telephone call. If you choose to use the telephone while driving, please use the hands-free device and only use the tele- phone when weather, road and traffic conditions permit.

Some jurisdictions prohibit the driver from using a cellular telephone while driving a vehicle.

Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 mph (approximately 50 km/h), your vehicle is covering a distance of 44 feet (approximately 14 m) every second.

Never operate radio transmitters equipped with a built-in or attached antenna (i.e. with- out being connected to an external antenna) from inside the vehicle while the engine is running. Doing so could lead to a malfunc- tion of the vehicle’s electronic system, possibly resulting in an accident and /or personal injury.

You can use the functions in the TEL menu to operate your telephone, provided it is connected to a hands-free system and switched on. 왘 Switch on the telephone and Audio or

COMAND*.

왘 Press button ÿ or è on the steering wheel repeatedly until the message TEL appears in the multifunction display.

Which messages will appear in the multifunction display depends on whether your telephone is switched on or off: 앫 If the telephone is off, the message TEL OFF appears in the multifunction display.

앫 If the telephone is on:

The telephone will then search for a network. During this time the multi- function display is empty. As soon as the telephone has found a network, the message READY appears in the multifunction display.

This standby message indicates that your telephone is ready for use and you can operate it using the control system.

Answering a call When your telephone is ready to receive calls, you can answer a call at any time. In the multifunction display you will then see the message:

왘 Press button s.

You have answered the call. The duration of the call appears in the multifunction display.

If you do not wish to accept a call, press button t.

You have ended the call. The standby message appears in the multifunction display.

Dialing a number from the phone book If your telephone is ready to receive calls, you may select and dial a number from the phone book at any time. 왘 Press button ÿ or è repeatedly until the message TEL appears in the multifunction display.

The control system reads the phone book which is stored in the telephone. This may take several minutes. The message Please wait appears in the multifunction display. When the message Please wait disappears, the phone book has been loaded.

왘 Press button j or k repeatedly until the desired name appears in the multifunction display. The stored names are displayed in ascending or descending alphabetical order.

If you press and hold button j or k for longer than one second, the system scrolls rapidly through the list of names until you release the button again. Cancel the quick search mode by pressing t.

For more information on driving with an automatic transmission see “Automatic transmission” (컄 page 48). Your vehicle’s transmission adapts its gear shifting process to your individual driving style by continually adjusting the shift points up or down. These shift point adjust- ments are performed based on current operating and driving conditions. If the operating conditions change, the automatic transmission reacts by adjusting its shift program.

An additional indication of the current gear selector lever position can be found on the cover of the shifting-gate. The indicators come on when you activate a switch (e.g. unlocking the vehicle or opening a door) and go out after approxi- mately 15 minutes.

Warning!

It is dangerous to shift the gear selector lever out of P or N if the engine speed is higher than idle speed. If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or reverse. You could lose control of the vehicle and hit someone or something. Only shift into gear when the engine is idling normally and when your right foot is firmly on the brake pedal.

Gear selector lever position when the vehicle is parked. Place gear selector lever in position P only when vehicle is stopped. The park position is not intended to serve as a brake when the vehicle is parked. Rather, the driver should always set the parking brake in addition to placing the gear selector lever in position P to secure the vehicle.

Effect The SmartKey can only be removed from the starter switch with the gear selector lever in position P. With the SmartKey removed, the gear selector lever is locked in position P. If the vehicle’s electrical system is malfunctioning, the gear selector lever could remain locked in position P (컄 page 406). í Reverse gear

Place gear selector lever in position R only when vehicle is stopped.

Effect

ë Neutral

No power is transmitted from the engine to the drive axle. When the brakes are released, the vehicle can be moved freely (pushed or towed). To avoid damage to the trans- mission, never engage N while driving. If the ESP® is deactivated or malfunctioning: Move gear selector lever to N only if the vehicle is in danger of skidding, e.g. on icy roads.

ê Drive

The transmission shifts automatically. All forward gears are available.

! Coasting the vehicle, or driving for any other reason with gear selector lever in N can result in transmission damage that is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty.

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat- tended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Children could move the gear selector lever from position P, which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.

Getting out of your vehicle with the gear selector lever not fully engaged in position P is dangerous. Also, position P alone is not intended to or capable of preventing your vehicle from moving, possibly hitting people or objects.

Always set the parking brake in addition to shifting to position P (컄 page 57). When parked on an incline, turn the front wheels towards the road curb.

Do not park this vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as grass, hay or leaves can come into contact with the hot exhaust system, as these materials could be ignited and cause a vehicle fire.

Stopping When you stop briefly, e.g. at traffic lights: 왘 Leave the transmission in gear. 왘 Hold the vehicle with the brake. When you stop longer with the engine idling and/or on a hill: 왘 Set the parking brake. 왘 Move the gear selector lever to

Gear ranges

With the gear selector lever in position D and driving in the automatic shift program C or S (컄 page 176), you can select a gear range for the automatic transmission to operate within: Gear selector lever (컄 page 177): You can limit the gear range by pressing the gear selector lever to the left (D-), and reverse the gear range limit by pressing the gear selector lever to the right (D+). Steering wheel gearshift control (CLK 500) (컄 page 178): You can limit the gear range by pressing the respective downshift button on the steering wheel gearshift control, and reverse the gear range limit by pressing the respective upshift button on the steering wheel gearshift control.

Gear selector lever one-touch gearshifting

Even with an automatic transmission, you can change the gears manually and limit or extend the gear range for automatic shifting with the gear selector lever in position D and driving in the automatic program mode C or S.

Shift into reverse gear R or parking position P only when the vehicle is stopped. Avoid spinning of a drive wheel for an extended period when driving off on slippery road surfaces. Downshifting

Warning!

On slippery road surfaces, never downshift in order to obtain braking action. This could result in drive wheel slip and reduced vehicle control. Your vehicle’s ABS will not prevent this type of loss of control.

왘 Briefly press the gear selector lever to

the left in the D- direction.

The transmission will shift from the current gear to the next lower gear as permitted by the shift program. This action simulta- neously limits the gear range of the transmission (컄 page 175).

To avoid overrevving the engine when the gear selector lever is moved to the D- direction, the transmission will not shift to a lower gear if the engine’s max. speed would be exceeded.

The transmission will shift from the current gear range directly to gear range D.

in the D- direction.

The transmission will automatically select the gear range suited for optimal acceleration and deceleration. This may involve shifting down one or more gears.

Steering wheel gearshift control one-touch gearshifting (CLK 500)

The steering wheel gearshift control pro- vides an alternative method for changing the gears manually and limiting or extend- ing the gear range for automatic shifting with the gear selector lever in position D and driving in the automatic program mode C or S.

To avoid overrevving the engine when downshifting with steering wheel gearshift buttons, the transmission will not shift to a lower gear if the engine’s max. speed would be exceeded.

You cannot shift with the steering wheel gearshift buttons when the gear selector lever is in position P, N or R. The last selected automatic program mode (C or S) is switched on when the engine is restarted.

Downshifting

Warning!

On slippery road surfaces, never downshift in order to obtain braking action. This could result in drive wheel slip and reduced vehicle control. Your vehicle’s ABS will not prevent this type of loss of control.

왘 Briefly press the inside 1 of one of the

buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

The transmission will shift to the next lower gear as permitted by the shift program. This action simultaneously limits the gear range of the transmission (컄 page 175).

Upshifting 왘 Briefly press the outside 2 of one of the buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

The transmission will shift to the next higher gear as permitted by the shift program.This action simultaneously extends the gear range of the transmis- sion.

Canceling gear range limit 왘 Press and hold the outside 2 of one of the buttons on the back of the steering wheel until D reappears in the multi- function display.

The transmission will shift from the current gear range directly to gear range D.

Shifting into optimal gear range 왘 Press and hold the inside 1 of one of the buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

The transmission will automatically select the gear range suited for optimal acceleration and deceleration. This may involve shifting down one or more gears.

Emergency operation (Limp-Home Mode)

If vehicle acceleration becomes less re- sponsive, sluggish, or the transmission no longer shifts, the transmission is most like- ly operating in limp-home (emergency op- eration) mode. In this mode only second gear and reverse gear can be selected. 왘 Stop the vehicle. 왘 Move gear selector lever to P. 왘 Turn off the engine. 왘 Wait at least ten seconds before

restarting.

왘 Restart the engine. 왘 Move gear selector lever to position D

(for second gear) or R.

왘 Have the transmission checked at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center as soon as possible.

Interior rear view mirror, antiglare position

1 Lever 왘 Tilt the mirror to the antiglare position by moving lever 1 towards the wind- shield. The interior rear view mirror is dimmed.

Auto-dimming rear view mirrors* The reflection brightness of the exterior rear view mirror on the driver’s side and the interior rear view mirror will respond automatically to glare when 앫 the ignition is switched on (컄 page 36),

and

앫 incoming light from headlamps falls on

the sensor in the interior rear view mirror.

The rear view mirror will not react if 앫 reverse gear R is engaged 앫 the interior lighting is turned on

Warning!

The auto-dimming function does not react if incoming light is not aimed directly at sen- sors in the interior rear view mirror.

The interior rear view mirror and the exterior rear view mirror on the driver’s side do not react, for example, if the rear window sun shade* is in raised position.

Glare can endanger you and others.

Warning!

In case of an accident, liquid electrolyte may escape from the mirror housing if the mirror glass breaks.

Electrolyte has an irritating effect. Do not allow the liquid to come into contact with eyes, skin, clothing, or respiratory system. In case it does, immediately flush affected area with water, and seek medical help if necessary.

Electrolyte drops coming into contact with the vehicle paint finish can be completely removed only while in the liquid state and by applying plenty of water.

Warning!

Exercise care when using the passen- ger-side exterior rear view mirror. The mirror surface is convex (outwardly curved surface for a wider field of view). Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Check your interior rear view mirror or glance over your shoulder before changing lanes.

Sun visors

The sun visors protect you from sun glare while driving.

Warning!

Do not use the vanity mirror while driving.

Keep the mirrors in the sun visors closed while vehicle is in motion. Reflected glare can endanger you and others.

When operating the rear window sunshade, make sure there is no danger of anyone be- ing harmed by the raising or lowering procedure.

The raising or lowering procedure can be immediately halted by briefly pressing the switch 1. Briefly press switch 1 again to raise or low- er the rear window sunshade completely.

Warning!

When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO* from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat- tended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Unsupervised use of vehi- cle equipment may cause an accident and/or serious personal injury.

Rear window defroster

The rear window defroster uses a large amount of power. To keep the battery drain to a minimum, switch off the defroster as soon as the rear window is clear. The defroster is automatically deactivated after approximately 6 to 17 minutes of operation depending on the outside temperature.

Activating 왘 Press button F or 1 in the

climate control panel (컄 page 197) or automatic climate control panel (컄 page 197). The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

Deactivating 왘 Press button F or 1 again.

The indicator lamp on the button goes out.

Warning!

Any accumulation of snow and ice should be removed from the rear window before driving. Visibility could otherwise be impaired, endangering you and others.

If the rear window defroster switches off too soon and the indicator lamp starts flashing, this means that too many electrical consumers are operating simultaneously and there is insufficient voltage in the battery. The system responds automatically by deactivating the rear window defroster. As soon as the battery has sufficient voltage, the rear window defroster automatically switches on again.

The climate control is operational when- ever the engine is running. You can oper- ate the climate control system in either the automatic or manual mode. The system cools or heats the interior depending on the selected interior temperature and the current outside temperature.

Nearly all dust particles, pollutants and odors are filtered out before outside air en- ters the passenger compartment through the air distribution system. The air conditioning will not engage (no cooling) if the A/C mode is deactivated (컄 page 194).

Follow the recommended settings for heat- ing and cooling given on the following pag- es. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.

When operating the climate control, the air that enters the passenger compartment through the air vents can be very hot or very cold (depending on the set temperature). This may cause burns or frostbite on unpro- tected skin in the immediate area of the air vents. Always keep sufficient distance be- tween unprotected parts of the body and the air vents. If necessary, use the air distribu- tion control (컄 page 187) to direct the air to air vents in the vehicle interior that are not in the immediate area of unprotected skin.

Severe conditions (e.g. strong air pollution) may require replacement of the filter before its scheduled interval. A clogged filter will reduce the air volume to the interior. If the vehicle interior is hot, ventilate the interior before driving off, see “Summer opening feature” (컄 page 249). The climate control will then adjust the interior temperature to the set value much faster. Keep the air intake grille in front of the windshield free of snow and debris. Do not obstruct air flow by placing objects on the air flow-through exhaust slots below the rear window.

When the climate control is switched off, the outside air supply and circulation are also switched off. Only choose this setting for a short time. Otherwise the windows could fog up, impairing visibility and endangering you and others.

When operating the climate control system in automatic mode, you will only rarely need to adjust the tempera- ture, air volume and air distribution. In automatic mode, the dehumidify function is switched on when the sys- tem is cooling. If necessary, this func- tion can be switched off by pushing the 2 button.

Activating 왘 Press button U (컄 page 187) while

the engine is running. The indicator lamp on the button comes on. The air volume and air distri- bution are adjusted automatically.

Setting the temperature

Use temperature controls 2 and 3 (컄 page 187) to separately adjust the air temperature on each side of the passenger compartment. You should raise or lower the temperature setting in small incre- ments, preferably starting at 72°F (22°C). The climate control will adjust to the set temperature as fast as possible.

Increasing 왘 Turn temperature control 2

and/or 3 (컄 page 187) slightly clock- wise. The climate control system will corre- spondingly adjust the interior air tem- perature.

If you turn the temperature control fully clockwise for one side of the vehicle, you are increasing the temperature for the other side of the vehicle as well.

Decreasing 왘 Turn temperature control 2

and/or 3 (컄 page 187) slightly coun- terclockwise. The climate control system will corre- spondingly adjust the interior air tem- perature.

If you turn the temperature control fully counterclockwise for one side of the vehicle, you are decreasing the temper- ature for the other side of the vehicle as well.

Adjusting air distribution

Use air distribution control 4 (컄 page 187) to adjust the air distribution. The following symbols are located on the controls:

If the automatic mode of the climate con- trol is switched off: 왘 Turn air distribution control 4 to a or Y (컄 page 187).

Switch to air recirculation mode to prevent unpleasant odors from entering the vehicle from the outside (e.g. before driving through a tunnel). This setting cuts off the intake of outside air and recirculates the air in the passenger compartment.

Warning!

Fogged windows impair visibility, endanger- ing you and others. If the windows begin to fog on the inside, switching off the air recirculation mode immediately should clear interior window fogging. If interior window fogging persists, make sure the air conditioning (컄 page 194) is activated, or press button P or 0.

Activating 왘 Press button , (컄 page 187). The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

The air recirculation mode is activated automatically at high outside tempera- tures. The indicator lamp on button , is not lit when the air recirculation mode is automatically switched on. A quantity of outside air is added after approximately 30 minutes.

Never operate the side windows and the tilt/sliding sunroof* if there is the possibility of anyone being harmed by the closing procedure.

In the event that the procedure causes potential danger, the closing of the side windows can be immediately halted by releasing the , button or by pressing or pulling the respective window switch. The closing of the tilt/sliding sunroof* can be immediately halted by releasing the , button or by moving the tilt/sliding sunroof* switch in the overhead control panel in any direction.

A side window or tilt/sliding sunroof* that was moved will remain in its cur- rent position if button , is used to re-open the remaining side windows or tilt/sliding sunroof*.

Air conditioning

The cooling function, is only operational when the engine is running, cools the vehi- cle interior down to the selected tempera- ture. The cooling function also dehumidifies the air in the vehicle interior, thus preventing the windows from fogging up.

Condensation may drip out from under- neath the vehicle. This is normal and not an indication of a malfunction.

Warning!

If you turn off the cooling function, the vehicle will not be cooled when weather conditions are warm. The windows can fog up more quickly. Window fogging may impair visibility and endanger you and others.

Deactivating It is possible to deactivate the air condi- tioning (cooling) function of the climate control system. The air in the vehicle will then no longer be cooled or dehumidified. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 187).

The indicator lamp on the button goes out. The cooling function switches off after a short delay.

Activating Moist air can fog up the windows. You can dehumidify the air with the air condition- ing. 왘 Press button 2 (컄 page 187) again.

The indicator lamp on the button comes on.

The air conditioning uses the refrigerant R134a. This refrigerant is free of CFCs which are harmful to the ozone layer.

If the air conditioning cannot be turned on again, this indicates that the air conditioning is losing refrigerant. The compressor has turned itself off. Have the air conditioning checked at the nearest authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

The air vents for the rear passenger compartment are located in the rear center console.

Rear passenger compartment adjustable air vents

The air conditioning for the rear passenger compartment is controlled via the climate control panel (컄 page 187).

The temperature at the center air vents for the rear passenger compartment 2 and 3 (컄 page 195) is the same as at the dashboard center air vents.
