4.Disconnect the other end of the jumper cable from the red, positive (+) jumper terminal of your vehicle (1).
Push-starting Vehicles equipped with automatic transmission cannot be push-started. Follow the directions in this chapter for jump-starting.
WARNING
Never tow a vehicle to start it because the sudden surge for- ward when the engine starts could cause a collision with the tow vehicle.
6-8
3.If engine coolant is running out under the vehicle or steam is com- ing out from the hood, stop the engine. Do not open the hood until the coolant has stopped running or the steaming has stopped. If there is no visible loss of engine coolant and no steam, leave the engine running and check to be sure the engine cooling fan is operating. If the fan is not running, turn the engine off.
IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS
ODH063006
If your temperature gauge indicates
overheating, you experience a loss
of power, or hear loud pinging or
knocking, the engine may be over-
heating. If this happens, you should:
1.Pull off the road and stop as soon
as it is safe to do so.
2.Place the shift lever in P (Park, for automatic transmission vehicle) and set the parking brake. If the air conditioning is ON, turn it OFF.
WARNING
While the engine is running, keep hands, clothing and tools away from the mov- ing parts such as the cooling fan and drive belt to prevent seri- ous injury.
4.Check for coolant leaking from the radiator, hoses or under the vehi- cle. (If the air conditioning had been in use, it is normal for cold water to be draining from it when you stop.)
5.If engine coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately and we recommend that you call an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
6-9
6.If you cannot find the cause of the overheating, wait until the engine temperature has returned to nor- mal. Then, if coolant has been lost, carefully add coolant to the reser- voir to bring the fluid level in the reservoir up to the halfway mark.
7.Proceed with caution, keeping alert for further signs of overheat- ing. If overheating happens again, we recommend that you call an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
CAUTION
• Serious loss of coolant indi- cates a leak in the cooling system and we recommend the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
• When the engine overheats from low engine coolant, sud- denly adding engine coolant may cause cracks in the engine. To prevent damage, add engine coolant slowly in small quantities.
What to do in an emergency
WARNING
causing
NEVER remove the radiator cap or the drain plug while the engine and radiator are hot. Hot coolant and steam may blow out under pressure, serious injury. Turn the engine off and wait until the engine cools down. Use extreme care when remov- ing the radiator cap. Wrap a thick towel around it, and turn it counterclockwise slowly to the first stop. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system. When you are sure all the pressure has been released, press down on the cap, using a thick towel, and continue turning counterclock- wise to remove it.

What to do in an emergency
Tire pressure monitoring sys- tem
WARNING
Over-inflation or under-inflation can reduce tire life, adversely affect vehicle handling, and lead to sudden tire failure that may cause loss of vehicle con- trol resulting in an accident.
Each tire, including the spare (if pro- vided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehi- cle manufacturer on the vehicle plac- ard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pres- sure label, you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
6-12
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the low tire pres- sure telltale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a signifi- cantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle’s handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire mainte- nance, and it is the driver’s responsi- bility to maintain correct tire pres- sure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumina- tion of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when the system is not operating properly. The TPMS mal- function indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximate- ly one minute and then remain con- tinuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehi- cle start-ups as long as the malfunc- tion exists. When the malfunction indicator is illuminated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended. TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alter- nate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from function- ing properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the replace- ment or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to func- tion properly.
✽✽ NOTICE If any of the below happens, we rec- ommend that the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. 1.The low tire pressure telltale/ TPMS malfunction indicator does not illuminate for 3 seconds when Engine Start/Stop button is turned to the ON or engine is running.
2.The TPMS malfunction indicator remains illuminated after blinking for approximately 1 minute.
3.The Low tire pressure position
telltale remains illuminated.
Low tire pressure telltale
Low tire pres- sure position telltale and tire pressure telltale
ODH043232L
When the tire pressure monitoring system warning indicators are illumi- nated and warning message dis- played on the cluster LCD display, one or more of your tires is signifi- cantly under-inflated. The low tire pressure position telltale light will indicate which tire is significantly under-inflated by illuminating the cor- responding position light.
If either telltale illuminates, immedi-
ately reduce your speed, avoid hard
cornering and anticipate increased
stopping distances. You should stop
and check your tires as soon as pos-
sible. Inflate the tires to the proper
pressure as indicated on the vehi-
cle’s placard or tire inflation pressure
label located on the driver’s side cen-
ter pillar outer panel. If you cannot
reach a service station or if the tire
cannot hold the newly added air,
replace the low pressure tire with a
spare tire.
If you drive the vehicle for about 10
minutes at speeds above 25 km/h
after replacing the low pressure tire
with the spare tire, the below will
happen:

6-13
WARNING
Low pressure damage Significantly low tire pressure makes the vehicle unstable and can contribute to loss of vehicle control and increased braking distances. Continued driving on low pres- sure tires can cause the tires to overheat and fail.
TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) malfunction indicator
The TPMS malfunction indicator will illuminate after it blinks for approxi- mately one minute when there is a problem with the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. We recommend that the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
✽ NOTICE If there is a malfunction with the TPMS, the low tire pressure position telltale will not be displayed even though the vehicle has an under- inflated tire.
What to do in an emergency
✽ NOTICE The spare tire is not equipped with a tire pressure sensor.
CAUTION
In winter or cold weather, the low tire pressure telltale may illuminate if the tire pressure was adjusted to the recom- mended tire inflation pressure in warm weather. It does not mean your TPMS is malfunc- tioning because the decreased temperature leads to a lowering of tire pressure. When you drive your vehicle from a warm area to a cold area or from a cold area to a warm area, or the outside temperature is higher or lower, you should check the tire inflation pressure and adjust the tires to the rec- ommended tire inflation pres- sure.

Changing a tire with TPMS If you have a flat tire, the low Tire Pressure and Position telltales will come on. We recommend that the system be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
CAUTION
NEVER use a puncture-repair- ing agent to repair and/or inflate a low pressure tire. The tire sealant can damage the tire pressure sensor. If used, you will have to replace the tire pressure sensor.
Each wheel is equipped with a tire pressure sensor mounted inside the tire behind the valve stem. You must use TPMS specific wheels. It is rec- ommended that you have your tires serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

with the spare tire, the below will
happen:
• The TPMS malfunction indicator
may blink for approximately 1
minute and then remain continu-
ously

illuminated because
You may not be able identify a low
tire by simply looking at it. Always
use a good quality tire pressure
gauge to measure the tire's inflation
pressure. Please note that a tire that
is hot (from being driven) will have a
higher pressure measurement than a
tire that is cold (from sitting station-
ary for at least 3 hours and driven
less than 1.6 km (1 mile) during that
3 hour period).
Allow the tire to cool before measur-
ing the inflation pressure. Always be
sure the tire is cold before inflating to
the recommended pressure.
A cold tire means the vehicle has
been sitting for 3 hours and driven for
less than 1.6 km (1 mile) in that 3
hour period.
WARNING
TPMS • The TPMS cannot alert you to severe and sudden tire dam- age caused by external fac- tors such as nails or road debris.
• If you feel any vehicle instabil- ity, immediately take your foot off the accelerator, apply the brakes gradually and with light force, and slowly move to a safe position off the road.

remove any lug nuts until the tire
has been raised off of the ground.
ODH063012
8.Place the jack at the designated
jacking position under the frame
closest to the tire you are chang-
ing. The jacking positions are
plates welded to the frame with two
tabs and a raised dot. Never jack
any other position or part of the
vehicle. It may damage to the side
seal molding.
ODH063013
9.Insert the jack handle into the jack
and turn it clockwise, raising the
vehicle until the tire clears the
ground. Make sure the vehicle is
stable on the jack.
10. Loosen the lug nuts with the wheel lug nut wrench and remove them with your fingers. Remove the wheel from the studs and lay it flat on the ground out of the way. Remove any dirt or debris from the studs, mount- ing surfaces, and wheel.
11. Install the spare tire onto the
studs of the hub.
12. Tighten the lug nuts with your fin- gers onto the studs with the smaller end of the lug nuts clos- est to the wheel.
13. Lower the vehicle to the ground by turning the jack handle coun- terclockwise.
6-21
✽ NOTICE Check the tire pressure as soon as possible after installing a spare tire. Adjust it to the recommended pres- sure.
If you have a tire gauge, check the tire pressure (see “Tires and Wheels” in chapter 8 for tire pressure instruc- tions.). If the pressure is lower or higher than recommended, drive slowly to the nearest service station and adjust it to the recommended pressure. Always reinstall the valve cap after checking or adjusting tire pressure. If the cap is not replaced, air may leak from the tire. If you lose a valve cap, buy another and install it as soon as possible. After changing tires, secure the flat tire and return the jack and tools to their proper stor- age locations.
What to do in an emergency
ODH063014
14. Use the wheel lug nut wrench to
tighten the lug nuts in the order
shown. Double-check each lug
nut until they are tight. After
changing tires, we recommend
that an authorized HYUNDAI
dealer tighten the lug nuts to their
proper torque as soon as possi-
ble. The wheel lug nut should
be tightened to 9~11 kg.m
(65~79 lb.ft).
6-22
Use of compact spare tires (if equipped) Compact spare tires are designed for emergency use only. Drive carefully on the compact spare tire and always follow the safety precautions.
CAUTION
Your vehicle has metric threads on the studs and lug nuts. Make certain during tire changing that the same nuts that were removed are reinstalled. If you have to replace your lug nuts make sure they have metric threads to avoid damaging the studs and ensure the wheel is properly secured to the hub. We recommend that you consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for assistance.
If any of the equipment such as the jack, lug nuts, studs, or other equip- ment is damaged or in poor condi- tion, do not attempt to change the tire and call for assistance.
WARNING
To prevent compact spare tire failure and loss of control pos- sibly resulting in an accident: • Use the compact spare tire
only in an emergency.
• NEVER operate your vehicle
over 80 km/h (50 mph).
• Do not exceed the vehicle’s maximum load rating or the load carrying capacity shown on the sidewall of the com- pact spare tire.
• Do not use the compact spare tire continuously. Repair or replace the original tire as soon as possible to avoid fail- ure of the compact spare tire. • On AWD vehicles, do not use the compact spare tire contin- uously. It may damage to the AWD driving system or the differen- tial. Temporarily use the com- pact spare tire for emergency only.
6-23
What to do in an emergency
When driving with the compact spare tire mounted to your vehicle: • Check
tire pressure after installing the compact spare tire. The compact spare tire should be inflated to 420 kPa (60 psi).
the
• Do not take this vehicle through an automatic car wash while the com- pact spare tire is installed.
• Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle because this tire has been designed especially for your vehicle.
• The compact spare tire’s tread life is shorter than a regular tire. Inspect your compact spare tire regularly and replace worn com- pact spare tires with the same size and design, mounted on the same wheel.
• Do not use more than one compact
spare tire at a time.
• Do not tow a trailer while the com-
pact spare tire is installed.
6-24
✽ NOTICE
When the original tire and wheel are
repaired and reinstalled on the vehi-
cle, the lug nut torque must be set
correctly. The correct lug nut tight-
ening torque is 9-11 kg.m (65-79
lb.ft).
CAUTION
To prevent damaging the com- pact spare tire and your vehicle: • Drive slowly enough for the road conditions to avoid all hazards, such as a potholes or debris.
• Avoid driving over obstacles. The compact spare tire diame- ter is smaller than the diame- ter of a conventional tire and reduces the ground clearance approximately 25 mm (1 inch). • Do not use tire chains on the compact spare tire. Because of the smaller size, a tire chain will not fit properly.
• Do not use the compact spare tire on any other wheels, nor should standard tires, snow tires, wheel covers or trim rings be used with the com- pact spare wheel.

When towing the vehicle by flatbed
equipment, secure wheels by using
chocks and tie-down straps (or soft
belts).
Do not place straps over body panels
or through the wheels.
If emergency towing is necessary, we recommend having it done by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a commercial service. Proper lifting and towing procedures are necessary to prevent damage to the vehicle. The use of wheel dollies or flatbed is recommended.
tow-truck
CAUTION
Do not lift the vehicle by the tow fitting or body and chassis parts. Otherwise the vehicle may be damaged.
On AWD vehicles, your vehicle must be towed with a wheel lift and dollies or flatbed equipment with all the wheels off the ground.
CAUTION
The AWD vehicle should never be towed with the wheels on the ground. This can cause serious damage to the transmission or the AWD system.
On 2WD vehicles, it is acceptable to tow the vehicle with the front wheels on the ground (without dollies) and the rear wheels off the ground. If any of the loaded wheels or sus- pension components are damaged or the vehicle is being towed with the rear wheels on the ground, use a towing dolly under the rear wheels. When being towed by a commercial tow truck and wheel dollies are not used, the rear of the vehicle should always be lifted, not the front.

What to do in an emergency
WARNING
If equipped with rollover sensor If your vehicle is equipped with side and curtain air bag, set the Engine Start/Stop button to OFF or ACC position when the vehi- cle is being towed. The side and curtain air bag may deploy when the ignition is ON, and the rollover sensor detects the situation as a rollover.
6-28
When towing your vehicle in an emergency without wheel dollies: 1.Set the Engine Start/Stop button in
the ACC position.
2.Place the shift lever in N (Neutral). 3.Release the parking brake.
ODH063021
CAUTION
Failure to place the shift lever in N (Neutral) may cause internal damage to the transmission.

mend you have it done by an author-
ized HYUNDAI dealer or a commer-
cial tow truck service.
6-29
What to do in an emergency
If towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle may be temporarily towed using a cable or chain secured to the emergency tow- ing hook at the front (or rear) of the vehicle. Use extreme caution when towing the vehicle with a cable or chain. A driver must be in the vehicle to steer it and operate the brakes. Towing in this manner may be done only on hard-surfaced roads for a short distance and at low speeds. Also, the wheels, axles, power train, steering and brakes must all be in good condition.
6-30
Always follow these emergency tow- ing precautions: • Place the Engine Start/Stop button in the ACC position so the steering wheel is not locked.
• Place the shift lever in N (Neutral). • Release the parking brake. • Depress the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will have reduced braking perform- ance.
• More steering effort will be required because the power steer- ing system will be disabled.
• Use a vehicle heavier than your
own to tow your vehicle.
• The drivers of both vehicles should communicate with each other fre- quently.
• Before emergency towing, check that the hook is not broken or dam- aged.
• Fasten the towing cable or chain
securely to the hook.
• Do not jerk the hook. Apply steady
and even force.
ODH063025
• Use a towing cable or chain less
than 5 m (16 feet) long. Attach a
white or red cloth (about 30 cm (12
inches) wide) in the middle of the
cable or chain for easy visibility.
• Drive carefully so the towing cable or chain remains tight during tow- ing.
• Before towing, check the automat- ic transmission for fluid leaks under your vehicle. If the automatic trans- mission fluid is leaking, flatbed equipment or a towing dolly must be used.
CAUTION
To avoid damage to your vehicle and vehicle components when towing: • Always pull straight ahead when using the towing hooks. Do not pull from the side or at a vertical angle.
• Do not use the towing hooks to pull a vehicle out of mud, sand or other conditions from which the vehicle cannot be driven out under its own power.
• Limit the vehicle speed to 15 km/h (10 mph) and drive less than 1.5 km (1 mile) when towing to avoid serious dam- age to the automatic trans- mission.

Tire pressure gauge (if equipped) Tires normally lose some air in day- to-day use, and you may have to add a air periodically and usually it is not a sign of a leaking tire, but of normal wear. Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold because tire pressure increases with tempera- ture.
To check the tire pressure, take the following steps: 1.Unscrew the inflation valve cap that is located on the rim of the tire. 2.Press and hold the gauge against the tire valve. Some air will leak as you begin and more will leak if you don't press the gauge in firmly.
3.A firm non-leaking push will acti-
vate the gauge.
4.Read the tire pressure on the gauge to see whether the tire pres- sure is low or high.
5.Adjust the tire pressure to the specified pressure. Refer to “Tires and Wheels” in chapter 8.
6.Reinstall the inflation valve cap.

WARNING
Maintenance work • Performing maintenance work on a vehicle can be danger- ous. You can be seriously injured while performing some maintenance proce- dures. If you lack sufficient knowledge and experience or the proper tools and equip- ment to do the work, we rec- ommend that the system be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
• Working under the hood with the engine running is danger- ous. It becomes even more dangerous when you wear jewelry or loose clothing.
(Continued)
7-6
(Continued) • Do not drive long time with the engine cover (if equipped) removed.
• When checking the engine room, do not go near fire. Fuel, washer fluid, etc. are flamma- ble oils that may cause fire.
• Before touching the battery, ignition cables and electrical wiring, you should disconnect the battery "-" terminal. You may get an electric shock from the electric current.
• When you remove the interior trim cover with a flat head (-) driver, be careful not to dam- age the cover.
• Be careful when you replace and clean bulbs to avoid burns or electrical shock.
(Continued)
These can become entangled in moving parts and result in injury. Therefore, if you must run the engine while working under the hood, make certain that you remove all jewelry (especially rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces) and all neckties, scarves, and sim- ilar loose clothing before get- ting near the engine or cool- ing fans.
CAUTION
• Do not put heavy objects or apply excessive force on top of the engine cover (if equipped) or fuel related parts.
• When you inspect the fuel system (fuel lines and fuel injection devices), we recom- mend that you contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

OWNER MAINTENANCE The following lists are vehicle checks and inspections that should be per- formed at the frequencies indicated to help ensure safe, dependable operation of your vehicle. If you have any question, we recom- mend that you consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. These Owner Maintenance Checks are generally not covered by war- ranties and you may be charged for labor, parts and lubricants used.
Owner maintenance schedule When you stop for fuel: • Check the engine oil level. • Check coolant level in coolant
reservoir.
• Check the windshield washer fluid
level.
• Look for low or under-inflated tires.
WARNING
Be careful when checking your engine coolant level when the engine is hot. Scalding hot coolant and steam may blow out under pressure. This could cause burns or other serious injury.
While operating your vehicle: • Note any changes in the sound of the exhaust or any smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.
• Check for vibrations in the steering wheel. Notice any increased steer- ing effort or looseness in the steer- ing wheel, or change in its straight- ahead position.
• Notice if your vehicle constantly turns slightly or “pulls” to one side when traveling on smooth, level road.
• When stopping, listen and check for unusual sounds, pulling to one side, increased brake pedal travel or “hard-to-push” brake pedal.
• If any slipping or changes in the operation of your transmission occurs, check the transmission fluid level.
• Check automatic transmission P
(Park) function.
• Check parking brake. • Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle (water dripping from the air conditioning system during or after use is normal).
